Benfica striker Miklos Feher suffered a heart attack and died during a Portuguese SuperLiga clash at Vitoria Guimaraes on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Hungarian international - who was capped 18 times - collapsed shortly after being yellow carded in stoppage time. He leaned forward with his hands on his thighs before suddenly falling backward.
Feher - a second half substitute - was stretchered off the pitch and the game was halted for 15 minutes as team doctors attempted to resuscitate him.
"We tried to do everything we could to save him,'' Dr. Fausto Fernandes said.
Feher was taken to a hospital in Guimaraes by ambulance, where he died later.
