Is there a guide to the 150 Mb XP install
I read the article on
http://jdeboeck.msfnhosting.com/running all the remove and drivers batch files and it reduced my clean install to about 450 MB
I read this forum articles by there where no clear guides
Question:
Does anyone got a 150 MB XP SP1 install of what is the smallest install
How did you get such a small install
A there steps what to do how to reduce it even further ?

Use
http://jdeboeck.msfnhosting.com/then Gosh's reducing size of source:
http://gosh.msfnhosting.com/part1.htmIt may have been 450mb because you forgot to remove the optional and components folder that the batch files created (it moves them out rather than delete as a precaution). Or you forgot to remove the LANG folder (but gosh's reducing size of source guide should sort that)

OK thx for the info.
I got a source of around 355 Mb, which is fine
But when I use this source to install a clean version of Windows XP SP1 the windir folder is still 450 MB
is the 150 MB the source dir before installing XP or from what I understood it's the size of the windir after install ?
Or did I get this wrong ?

150-185mb is the size of Windows XP's installation files on the CD.

So the next logical question will be
What is the smallest windir size of the installed windows XP
or
How many optional components can be removed in order to get the smallest installed footprint

Run all of them to get the smallest footprint, but I don't recommend "REMOVE! Windows Management Instrumentation.cmd". But keep in mind that you're permantly removing features to slim it down.

OK, first use jdeboeck's guide to slim it down. Then use gosh's method to slim it down even more.
I got mine to 194 megs and it fits on a mini-CDR!

My WINDOWS folder is about 618 megs!

what you really have to keep in mind, is that the files are compressed on CD.
thats one large compression ratio

also disable the system restore and sfc.. dllcache...
u should gain more...
I think most annoying this is printer drivers... in drivers.cab
delete those junkies...
ramik
Feb 27 2004, 04:09 AM
i followed this, reduced all stuff, removes dllcache, drivers.cab, sfc, and the whole windows xp drive (with 100mb swap file) is about 650 MB..
i don't care about the cd size, i want the smallest installed XP.
can't be done smaller ?? delete some more dll's? system32 without subfilders is more than 250 mb...

well okay jdeboeck's remove files only removes general stuff
so it leaves some files. for example it has files for amd, if u're using intel u can delete those.. there are many other small stuff like this. but u have to dig 'em up yourself..
aside from this there was a guy once in the forum. he had tested the dll's and stuff like that to see which ones he don't need. I cannot recall his name
he had pretty long posts with files.. anyone recall his name?

Yeah I read the whole post but I am not sure that deletiing all the files is the right way.
It much prefer the inf/
http://jdeboeck.msfnhosting.com/ way to remove al the stuff
for 1 it makes sure that everything is removed including the REG s***
2 it makes sure that the stuff is never installed in the first place
One final question.
Does anyone thought about swapping the shell/explorer for a different one to remove IE totaly. ( with a single file of edit in the shell=)
I know one can use litestep but that's a bit drastic for me

idioteque, there's only so far you can slim down XP on a cd without destroying the core OS. I'm sure it took jdeboeck many many hours of testing for stability after removing files from an XP install CD. Plus, I'm guessing most of the 'bloat' in Windows is created during the install process, based on the installation environment (your PC). So, in essence the only way to remove some of those excess files is to delete them manually or use a batch file.
And your second question- you want to totally remove explorer/iexplorer, but Litestep is too drastic for you? Come on...

Ok some questions..
If i remove this stuff is it possible to reinstall them at a later stage when i actually need it ??
Like drivers, will windows ask me for the driver from the xp cd later ?
also, i use Dustbuster XP to remove junk file from my PC. On a default install it removes 880MB of files.. thats something HUGE
I guess you may have some luck too.. try it, and let me know how it goes.

Ya, ok got it workin, my windows folder was 201MB and my DEFAULT C:\ was 675MB but after running DustBusterXP it cleaned junk worth 228MB, thats huge..
Now my c:\ excluding the swap file is only 447MB
YEEHAA ! now thats what i call compression..
But hey, in the process i lost my calc.exe, my soundvol.exe etc etc, and my disk defrag, how do i exclude them from being deleted or, the question now is how do i restore them ??
Now the best way is install some standard apps, like winrar etc small ones, and make a sysprep image of this install..
In the image it'll further shrink to a 50% that'll make the image appsrox 225MB !
Hope this info helps someone..

is it actually possible to add more smaller options in Jdeboeck batch files? And other options like
Stuff like removing Hotfix log file in Windows
Remove Dr watson.
DVD play
And NOT remove msconfig.... ( I don't even know what batch file removes that )

Hi, all. I just bumped into this thread. It must be a very old thread. I bumped into it on Google.
Thought I'd sign in and and update that link for you.
A really nice lady who lives in England gave me a site where I could finish my work on Slimming Down Windows XP.
Here's where you can find my completed guide now. Or you can click on the links in my signature.

150-185mb is the size of Windows XP's installation files on the CD.
If you're talking about with the stock Windows installation the files on the CD will be around 490 MB.

Pretty impressive Martijn...the lowest I got it down to was 150 mb and that was almost perfect.
