I have spent hours with Microangelo and Res Hacker to modify icons in these files to my liking:

quartz.dll
shell32.dll
mydocs.dll
mycomput.dll
explorer.exe

I've replaced most of the Windows icons with those found in the KDE GUI or ones made by Foood.

Occasionally, I connect from my work machine to my machine at home (both Xp Pro) to transfer files or perform maintenance. I did this the other day and I returned home to find that my computer's icons were all back to Windows default. I think this is because my work computer was using unmodified versions of the listed files and the caching mechanism replaced my home computer's icons.

I had the modified files on my last unattened install CD it wasn't too much trouble to replace the files again.

Surprisingly, when connecting to a machine with standard icons with a machine with modified icons the replacement doesn't happen. Only in the opposite scenario does this occur.

I have since installed my modified files on my work machine but have not connected yet. I'll post back here if I find anything out.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Here are some of the icons if anyone cares.

I must admit I've never encountered this before but that's hardly surprising as
I don't hack program files smile.gif

Seriously, you can change all of the icons etc. by using the appropriate registry
keys. This is what I do using a 'custom.inf' file during the cmdlines.txt portion
of the install. The entries to look for are named "DefaultIcon" with a value of
"filename, resource number".

As far as I can tell from personal experience these changes survive Remote
Desktop connections in both directions.
