That's a REALLY neat and detailed guide. Thank you for doing this.
Now we can re-direct the new-comers who have problems, to this thread.

hu, just a Joke, including Drivers Integration would firstly double the size of the guide (How to fix all the bugs ^^) and secondly it will be changed in next version and you will have to do it again ^^

hmm, also put in links for servicepack 1a

because there are a lot of people with problems with sp2

and there's a big huge memory problem

I have 380mb of memory, so the amount of free space is of the upmost importance...

nLite installed
slipstreamed sp1a
dumped the s*** I didnt want
driver install
120mb in memory when windows boots

nlite installed
slipstreamed sp2
dumped the same s*** I didnt want + no firewall sp2 + security center gone
driver install
160mb in memory when windows boots :|

i'm quite a pro in nLite installs, tweaks and repairing pc's but it seemed all services took a lil more memory, explorer took A LOT more memory

so for people who want to use nlite because in the end the system requirements would be less high... take sp1a + hotfixes instead of sp2

just an idea newwink.gif

DigitalAZ, very thoroughly written, good job!

Fridge, interesting observations there. I haven't directly compared SP1/SP2 installations, but on a recent stripped-down XP-SP2 installation in VPC, I recall the memory usage in TaskManager was under 50mb or so; this was pretty heavily tweaked however, with the majority of unrequired services set to 'Manual'.

I'm sure Jeremy will chime in on this topic too, athough I gather we're not supposed to add post off-topic replies...whoops!

Cheers,
James

Importing Registry Tweaks
There are several methods for importing tweaks into the registry. I choose the following because it takes place during Windows setup thus applying the settings to all users. HKEY_CURRENT_USER Registry tweaks executed after setup apply only to current user. Another user logs in and the registry tweak is not applied.

* Create cmdlines.txt and place it in C:\working\xp_cd\$OEM$\
* Place the following into cmdlines.txt and save the file.
CODE
[COMMANDS]
"REGEDIT /S xp_cd.reg"

* Create xp_cd.reg and place it in C:\working\xp_cd\$OEM$\
* Place the following into xp_cd.reg and save the file.
CODE
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"WallPaper"="C:\\Windows\\Web\\Wallpaper\\Bliss.bmp"

The above code is merely an example. Place the HKCU registry tweaks you desire into this file. cmdlines.txt is automatically ran at the T-12/T-13 minute stage of Windows XP Setup.

I need a couple ?'s answered

First off when you say HKCU tweaks are executed after setup only apply to current user, making another login from a different user default and not "tweaked"

Does this mean HKLM and etc types of tweaks have the same rule?

And also can you only install HKCU tweaks through a cmdline.txt, or i also put in the many different types of tweaks such as HKLM etc and if it is true that HKCU tweaks are all that you can run through cmdlines.txt, will the tweak still work if i change HKLM tweaks to HKCU heading making them applied too HKCU instead of HKLM. Cause i thought HKLM tweaks were applied too all users machine wide, as were HKCU is only applied to the Current logged in user.

Thanks hope it makes sense. Just want to make sure before i am happy with my reg file to be installed with windows.
Fridge-RaideR
@ShakeNotStirr

you could just save ur regfile, and after u add a new user and execute the regfile once smile.gif its just 3sec work

or if u have time to spare:

u c that DigitalAZ puts his tweaks in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ now I'm sure DigitalAZ is een nice guy but indeed, the tweaks only apply to the logged in user which isnt very handy tongue.gif

there is a default tree in the registry which is copied if u make a new user, so if u would tweak the default tree, then every user u add would b tweaked...

now I dont know if all current user tweaks can be set in default.. so u have to check urself if a key exsists in the default tree..which is located, here:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT

give it a shot smile.gif

I hope this helps

[edit]
so

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"WallPaper"="C:\\Windows\\Web\\Wallpaper\\Bliss.bmp"

would be

[HKEY_USER\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
"WallPaper"="C:\\Windows\\Web\\Wallpaper\\Bliss.bmp"

Ok using the steps above if you create another user 54 days after install on your girlfriends birthday while eating a chocolate sundae during the afternoon in China while wearing a baseball cap at 45 degrees angle and hopping on one foot it will apply it to ALL USERS current and future. This step modifies the default user before it is created.
Fridge-RaideR
I just wanted to edit my post, I was surfing the web and noticed u were right, because if u make cmdlines.txt like this, there is no user.. so CURRENTUSER is the default template, I was wrong sorry smile.gif

Heres a great guide on how to apply reg tweaks to every new user by default

http://www.dazdezines.com/simplify-it/Guides/guide1.htm

in short, you load default user\ntuser.dat into regedit, and from there add all the HKCU/HKU tweaks into it (HKU\CUSTOM) and unload, and there you have a custom ntuser.dat! biggrin.gif
Place it in $oem$\$docs\default user and it will be copied to the right place automaticly smile.gif

Maybe should add that to the guide? thumbup.gif
Might already be, havent read it in a while, heh smile.gif

toe cutter, if u saw the posts here...

download the tweak package here:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=27911&st=0

take the onces out that u dont want,

make a file cmdlines.txt, place that in \$OEM$ on ur xpcd

and put this in cdmlines.txt:

[COMMANDS]
"REGEDIT /S regtweaks.reg"

this will make every tweak to the default user as well and is A LOT easier to do then that guide

AND some tweaks cannot be applied in default user, so ur guide wouldnt work, and this guide here will smile.gif

Yepp ive seen it, even read through ALL 98 pages of part 1 smile.gif

And yes again, it might just be easier doing it that way but i think the ntuser way is more professional and easier to handle, all you have to do is edit the default user and if you want to try it out then and there, create a new user account.
Its a matter of preference, thats all smile.gif

HKLM tweaks wouldnt work with the ntuser guide no, but i add them in cmdlines.txt since they are used as default values for new users aswell. (my theory is to add the HKCU tweaks in HKLM, but i havent dared to try it yet heh)

Still, its a matter of preference, i was just pointing out another way to handle the problem smile.gif

pdf file missing some parts (dl'd coupla times in case of bad file/whatnot)

Slipstream clean/gold source to SP1a
If you would prefer to slipstream SP2 then continue to the next section of this guide. This portion covers SP1a
Create your directory structure (I create folders in working as preference)
C:\working\xp_source
C:\working\xp_sp1a
C:\working\xp_cd

xp_source contains a copy of the contents from your Windows XP Professional clean/gold source.
xp_sp1a contains the Service Pack 1a Network Install executable. (xpsp1a_en_x86.exe)
xp_cd contains a copy of the xp_source directory.

1) Copy Contents of Windows CD to C:\working\xp_source (This will be your archive and you will move a copy to C:\working\xp_cd for modifying)

The following files/folders are default for Windows XP (No Service Pack)
