I'm looking for a good Notepad replacement for the new version (2.0). This notepad replacement must be small and must read files with file sizes greater than 32KB. It also must support different languages.
I have found four good Notepad replacement:

Yet another Notepad replacement...QUOTE
What's this?
The original Notepad shipped with Windows is probably the handiest program of all times, small, fast, without frills! Notepad2 tries to follow this principle, it's a small, fast and free text editor with syntax highlighting for HTML and other common languages.
yep, i agree with zbeta
notepad2 is the best IMO

Try this one:
Notepad++QUOTE
Notepad++ is a free source code editor which supports several programming languages running under the M$ Windows environment.
This project, based on Scintilla edit component (a very powerful editor component) and written in C++ with pure win32 api (i.e. without MFC, that ensures the higher execution speed and smaller size of the program), is under the GPL Licence.
This project is mature. However, as you can see it’s a one-man-project, there’re still some bugs and missing features. If you have any question or suggestion about this project, please drop me a mail, I’ll love to hear from you. As well, if you have any feature request, you can always do the demand, but there’s no warranty that I’ll implement it.
It's GNU, 600K download BTW.

Ive been using Editpad lite for several months. The "lite" version is totally free, while the Pro version is pay for.
Site:
http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.htmlDownload:
http://download.jgsoft.com/editpad/SetupEditPadLite.exePros
-tabbed interface
-F5 key inserts current date/time (just like regular notepad, and the format is even configurable)
-context menu option under the sendto menu
-unix/windows text formats
-can minimize to tray
-can edit file associated file extensions easily in the program itself
-in can be run using a .ini file with no registry entries
-Unicode and UTF support
-optional line numbers display for programmers
There is probably a lot more Im forgetting, but that is all I can think of off the top of my head. Im not positive but I think it does support both UTF and unicode formats. Over the months Ive been using it the only thing I miss is syntax highlighting for stuff like html coding.
Trying to find a text editor that the majority agrees on is probably going to be tough though. I tried easily over a dozen text editors before I finally found one that had the highest number of features/capabilities I wanted. I did give Notepad++ a try, and I think it would be a good choice. It does have syntax highlighting, but lacks the configurability of Editpad lite.

You can, but you must proceed doing it in these steps, or installation will fail:
1. rename notepad2.exe to notepad.exe
2. use modifype.exe to add crc checksumdata to notepad.exe
3. makecab the file to notepad.ex_ and replace it on your cd.
Have fun with it!

So the version 2.0 will not contain any Notepad replacement.
However, there was a modified version original Notepad (which has more key-bindings) in the 1.x, I think we don't need this, too.

Try UltraEdit. It has a "Column Mode"...

What I want is basically XP's Notepad for Windows 95. Same as the older version, except that there is no file size limit, search and replace, plus the ability to jump to lines with numbers.
Isn't there any Notepad replacement that has the following features but does NOT resort to the RichText control?

I think NotepadEx is the best 'strict classic' Notepad replacement.
If does include everything what you want, no toolbars, highlighting, text formatting and other weird things Notepad should never have.
Plus it is fast and does not suffer from Richtext features [it IS based on Richedit, however, you should not notice it].
I can upload version with ~exact XP look [Lucida Console].

Have you tried KaiEdit ? It has line numbering, GoTo, S&R, favorites, tabbed multiple documents interface, opens big files (even binaries), syntax highlighting, and a quite unique and very usefull vertical selection mode. It's only in German though and it lacks wordwrap unfortunately.

'awergh,'
I completely agree with you on the MetaPad and PFE is TOO much. Besides the Font style and size are very restrictive in PFE.
I went back and re-ran the UnOfficialWin98SE_SP2.1a and unchecked every item and then checked MetaPad for install. Voila!! MetaPad is back again, and I plan on saving the full list of files in a protected area just incase some other program replaces it again.

Greetings Jaqie,
My only reason for posting was to let others know of how to regain the one, "MetaPad," that came with the last version of 'UnOfficialWin98SE_SP2.1A'.
My favorite is 'EditPad' by JGSOFT website
http://www.EditPadLite.com and is FREE. Will open any size file and any number of files using TABS like FireFox.
I would also like to apologize for the posting I did in the Introduce yourself threading. At that time I had so much on my mind that I was not thinking straight. If there are any specifics you wish to address let me know and we may discuss this. You may send me a PM if you would prefer.
And still have a need to get back to that project of updating my system so I can attempt the "98SE2XP" again as it did not work correctly the first time.
I do send you my APOLOGY and wish you all of the happyness over the coming Holidays,
Fredledingue

I also love Notepad++ and use it everyday, but... it's not a "notepad" replacement.
It has too many menu and sub menus to be a notepad. Some poeple think that notpad is to write code and the more developer function there are the best is the "notepad". No a notepad is a note handler. It's for text.
Not for editing programs.
IMO the most important is that notepad launch fast and offer a maximum space for visibility and have easy, one-click commands.

Pfe.exe is great too but its for advance users
i only use it as a notepad the other stuff is out of my league.
Now i'm debating on the both because they are both advanced and i only use it as
a notepad.exe to make reg files etc...
I guess there will never be no basic notepad.exe

I've used nearly all the 'notepad-replacements' suggested above, and my personal favorite is
EditPlus. It's not free, but it somehow 'clicked' with me.
So, my suggestion is to just download them all, try them one-by-one, and settle with the one that suits you best.
There's no "one-size-fits-all" solution here.

I tried NotepadEx, and I think I like it. I'm very sensitive to change, though, so it'll take some getting used to.
I disabled the status bar, the automatic wrapping, and automatic indentation. Then it works exactly like Notepad. One small complaint, though: just like the original Notepad, when you try to save a file with an extension that isn't registered, it'll always append .txt

I prefer Notepad++, as it's opensource, supports Win9x, and offers practically everything that ConTEXT offers, except it's a bit more stable than ConTEXT.
I've used Metapad, and Notepad2. Of those two, notepad2 is far better IMHO.

I'm another Notepad2 user because it is self contain into a single exe. It is a very smooth syntax highlighting for coding purpose. Support ASCII and UNICODE. And it is very stable.
The only thing that was annoying to me was the message "Are you sure you want to open this large file...". I removed this message by patching offset 56ECh from 7338 to EB38 (version 1.0.12).
I tried all the others text editors mentionned but they are too much for my needs. BTW, one bad side about Notepad2... it seems to be no development on it anymore.

I've never tried any of these replacement Notepads apps.... are they capable of more than Wordpad?
The basic differences are
(1) Wordpad has a greater capacity than the standard Windows notepad
(2) Wordpad text can be formatted whereas the standard notepad cannot
Note that some of the third-party notepads (e.g. metapad) have capabilities beyond those of the standard notepad.
