Unfortunately, Windows 98's memory management is not good. Some updates in the service pack fixes some memory leakage problems, but this is not enough. RAM release programs also don't solve this problem.
I recommend that you should use well-written mature programs, avoid to use any beta/alpha/new programs.

I found using Litepc to partially remove (de-integrate in their words) IE did an amazing job of increasing the stability of win98se.

Just a side note, I installed this Beta 2 and here are a few things I seen missing or maybe the update didn't install at all.
1. Windows 2000 / ME color scheme changes.
2. Windows 98 Second Edition Caption on the Start Menu
I installed 1.6.2 and these two things showed up

Hey all,
You know that there is an option for the mouse in Windows XP saying "Snap To" (check box) , Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box.
I get used with it, and I would like to have it in Windows 98 SE too.
(because I'm using both systems)
So, Does anyone of you know if that is possible?
I've searched the web, but without any luck ... so if any of you know any application that makes it possible ... please tell me about it.

funny that, i have 3 systems running IE on win98se and they all run stable. but get this, 2 of the systems are running Cyrix processors.
the only IE probs i have faced when dealing with other ppls IE probs is where JAVA applets freeze the browser. For those of you who play yahoo pool on 98 im guessing you know what im talking about? simple fix - updating JAVA.

if you won't download it, then it wasn't meant for people like you

(and btw son an .exe or .rar file cannot be uploaded to the board)
the file is ok of course, now available here:
WinME.RARWINME.RAR Checksum 0F333325I cant quite find the time to make the second link work; the checksum number is there anyway though.

C'mon people. Start acting like mature and civilized folks.
AVOID downloading the WinME.RAR file. Go get the WinME Defrag
along with the WinME Scandisk tool at Mdgx's Addons page instead:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htmIt's far better than downloading just the WinME defrag tool because both
the Scandisk & Defrag tools of ME are faster than the 9x versions. Mdgx
has packaged both of those tools in a zip file. Get it directly from his site.

Of course, the final version will have uninstallation support.

just popped in to say that i have installed the beta and everything runs smoothly...no bsod's or anything, and i'm not the type that installs betas but i said what the hell it couldn't do any more damage than destroying the windows installation

I did the same with a fresh install of 98se. It runs great! I was a little worried, but no troubles after three weeks. Much better performance than the stock install of 98!

in the beta there is no windows update bug but you won't be able to uninstall it but i doubt you'd need to uninstall it if it works for you,the 1.6.2 has a windows update bug but allows you to uninstall it
when the official 2.0 comes out then i will install it but for now i'll stick to the 1.6.2
