Yeah, cool but's illegal

Explain how it is illegal.

As far as the license issues go, to my knowledge there is no such harm using those files, as you have a Windows OS license and it is simply software. Therefore you already technically own these software titles and if you were to begin using the ones from Windows ME it would be the same as updating your software. Nothing illegal in that. Intel makes the defrag utility (not Windows or MS) and everything that people want to add already exist in Windows. No one has to pay to buy just Scandisk or the defrag utilities, as they come with all Windows. So I would see no harm in using the Windows ME versions, as I would personally view it as being like freeware in a sense.

Tarun, just for clarification: you say "adding -ANY- WinME file into the Unofficial Service Pack is not a problem". Right?

You would want to look at your License agreement and local intellectual property law. The best way to handle this situation would be to contact a lawyer admitted to practice law in your area and ask about this or you could indepentently research this topic.

Not that I'm qualified to speak on the matter but I'm sure the situation is not that simple or that difficult.

Both the Win98SE and WinME EULA, for example, clearly states "If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is not accompanied by a new computer system or computer system component, you may not use or copy the SOFTWARE PRODUCT." That's the letter of the law, and it's unlikely that local laws will override the agreement that you accept (implicitly or explicitly) when you install either OS. So technically most users are running "illegal" Win98SE systems these day, and while it mightn't be illegal to sell a copy of the WinME CD without an accompanying bit of hardware, the buyer wouldn't lawfully be able to use the software.

The spirit of the law, how the agreement is likely to be enforced, is another matter entirely. Microsoft as yet haven't take issue with the redistribution of certain standalone utilities distributed on the WinME CD, like Defrag and Scandisk (and there's little chance of Microsoft being that petty. @pple®© on the other hand... whistling.gif) but distributing OS components is probably going to be frowned apon. Not necessarily for obvious commercial reasons (it would be unlikely to hurt WinME sales much) but due to the support implications of having hybrid systems around and the impact on Microsoft's reputation if those systems started falling over (or worked better tongue.gif) after Microsoft updates and other software is installed in future. And that's fair enough I reckon.

Axcel216's suggestions are fine for hardcore users that are willing to deal with the consequences of mixing 98SE and ME components (those people are less likely to bombard the net with "hate" if issues arise after installing upgrades) but are not for the casual user.

@Gape. Slightly off topic here but I think your service packs might be considered borderline. The ME components you currently distribute are basically simple drop-in replacements unlikely to cause the user future problems, and Microsoft probably won't stomp on them, but I certainly wouldn't consider adding any more.

The need to include Windows ME components comes down to your definition of "service pack". I'm sure many would disagree with my definition, but I see a service pack as upgrades for original OS components/utilities (with official versions where they exist and with freely redistributable [not necessarily public domain] ones when they don't), and corrections for flaws/oversights with the original OS. So including a new "task manager" in a Win98SE service pack is fine as the original doesn't show all running tasks, but notepad, however simple it might be, isn't "broken" and needn't be replaced (alternative text editors are better suited to inclusion in a seperate "Win98SE Enhancement Pack"). So even if it were perfectly legal I still wouldn't use the ME icon dll for example - it changes though arguably doesn't enhance the original system - some even feel the rounded style of the ME icons look out of place on Win98SE systems. (I'm not suggesting you excude all icon changes by the way, a replacement batch file icon for example might be worth considering). Maybe that type of filtering process won't be popular but at the very least it'll help reduce the size of the download.

if you look at the majority of DLL files in a Windows ME installation you will see that they are componants of Windows 2000. So Tarun, i also believe that there is no harm in using such files.

Does this mean every licenced copy of Windows ME should be rendered illegal due to it not being accompanied by a Windows 2000 licence?

Windows ME was made with core Windows 2000 technologies. I recall hearing about that way back after ME was being released. What's a pity is that they didn't include the option to use NTFS, or have a pointer shadow. ;D

nil,
sorry but that part of the EULA:
QUOTE
"If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is not accompanied by a new computer system or computer system component, you may not use or copy the SOFTWARE PRODUCT."

is part of the OEM EULA only, it means that you cannot buy the Operating System if not "bundled" with a new PC.

jaclaz

Thanks jaclaz, told you I wasn't qualified. newwink.gif

(My CD was purchased seperately from a supplier so I always imagined I had a "retail" version. I'll dob him in to Microcop immediately smile.gif)

I appreciate that the example I gave may not hold true for some (or even many) but it's very likely that subsequent clauses relating to redistribution and seperation of components is common to all EULA - that Microsoft has the right to include Win2k components in WinME has no bearing on anyone else's right to distribute those components even if they (and all recipients) legally owned copies of Win2k. Of course even those parts only relate to components distributed on the CD - some files available for download from Microsoft have their own terms of use, and many patches/upgrades don't seem to have any conditions attached. (I have noticed a few in the past that explicitly point back to the parent EULA but not many.)

In retrospect the words I used to describe how Gape's service packs might be considered were probably ill-chosen, but I reckon the guts of what I was trying to say still holds true. It was the distribution aspect that I was commenting on with the service packs, not usage, and had more to do with questioning the benefits of doing so rather than potential legal negatives. Like I said it was a little off topic, it was just convenient to mention it at the time.

All just my opinion of course.

10 dolla keybords r good enuf,no need to buy a 100 dolla keybord for it's uselss fetures

exactly, ms can get screwed as far as their multimedia keyboard goes....its too big and ugly. a few months ago i bought a new keyboard for my main machine for $12 which is branded 'starkey' and has volume control, internet buttons...etc. dus the job n even comes with one of those wrist things...thats dirt cheap for a keyboard ova here. one thing i will neva buy is a wireless keyboard or mouse...i cant b bothad splurgin on batteries or hangin my mouse in a cradle every time im dun with it...
soldier1st
yea i feel the same way,i hate wireless mice n keyboards cuzz they need batteries and if not careful some1 could hack in and steel my mouse, corded stuff is much better and safer, sides i never use those multimedia keys,i do everything manualy, sides it costs less cuzz cuzz no need for batteries(i have a couple batteries here and there and i rarely use batteries)i know of some1 who has a wireless mouse and he always has problems with it,an older logitech wireless mouse,i use microsoft optical mice(the corded ones)always found them to work in every computer i own,i have a logitech mouse and it's picky with some systems
zoem
my friend had/has a wireless logitech keyboard n mouse...he dusnt use em anymore, i wonder y...

wireless networking and all that is something i wouldnt run in the suburbs. even if encrypted. mite have a smartass neighbor who hacks in n downloads stuff with ur bandwidth.

i mainly only use the multimedia keys for volume control. but i use a lot of keyboard shortcuts as well. im not gonna spend double the amount for some ms multimedia crap that cant even do a simple function like ALT+F4.
soldier1st
anything wireless is a security risk even if it is encrypted
i won't use wireless internet, corded is better and safer
unosys
Guys i even managed to replace most of the media player 10 files using the same method..so basically now i have Windows 98 SE with ME & XP SP2 inside! newwink.gif

And media player 9 with 50% media player of 10 inside! tongue.gif
unosys
-Repost-
soldier1st
how did you do that?was it easy?
unosys
Well i am still heavily testing it

But it is a must that you have read & applied Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE before doing this especially the one's about deleting the registry keys & adding xp sp2 functionality. Otherwise you may end up with access denied messages during the copying stage.

Then do the following

1). Download Media player 10. Use WinRAR & extract the contents to a folder of your choice(usually by right clicking the exe).

2). Copy & Paste the following contents to notepad

QUOTE
COPY /Y wmsdmod.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
COPY /Y wmspdmod.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
COPY /Y wmadmod.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
COPY /Y wmadmoe.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
COPY /Y Laprxy.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

COPY /Y wmpdxm.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
COPY /Y custsat.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
COPY /Y WMPBAND.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
COPY /Y WMPBAND.dll C:\Progra~1\Window~1
Save the file as COPYWMP10.BAT while choosing "All Files" in the save as type option.

4). Then create a second batch file with the foll contents.

QUOTE

Save the file as REGWMP10.BAT while choosing "All Files" in the save as type option.

3). Copy the first batch file 'COPYWMP10' to folder where you have extracted the Media Player 10 Files.

4). Restart to MS-DOS mode & CD to directory where you have extracted the MP10 files & run COPYWMP10.BAT. If you have read the instructions on top everything should go fine.

5). Type EXIT to restart windows & when inside windows run the second batch file REGWMP10.BAT.

6). Finally restart windows one more time. thumbup.gif

IMPORTANT

These are the few files that i've found to run without any problem. You can replace even more files cool.gif but that requires some registry editing which i am working on. Meanwhile you guys can try out this & pls post your comments.
soldier1st
restarting in msdos mode is tricky,i only did it for the new user.exe and user32.dll
even then i had problems(god thing i had another os or i would have had to format again)
nil
Hi unosys. Nice to see you went to the effort to post your findings. I didn't try the process you describe (I don't use WMP) but I noticed a couple of minor issues with your batch files that I thought to bring to your attention. First, the paths on lines 24 and 27 of RegWMP10.bat (%windir%\Progra~1\...) look like they need fixing, and, while unlikely to cause problems for most people as given, as a rule it's best to quote any path that includes %windir% or any other variable.

By the way, are you able to play DRM encoded files after making the changes you speak of?

By popular demand...

I finally took the time and created an automated script to perform all 98 SE -> ME "transplant" operations unattended.

It consists of 2 DOS batch files

* 98SEWIN.BAT = must be run from within Windows 98 SE = shortcut provided by installer.

* 98SEDOS.BAT = must NOT be run by itself, it is used excusively by 98SEWIN.BAT.

All files MUST be installed [there is NO choice to change drive or folder during install] into C:\LFN4DOS from the 98SE2ME.EXE self-installing executable [298 KB]:

http://ftp.mdgx.com/files/98SE2ME.EXE

MUST read guidelines FIRST:
http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S

HTML Guide [KRM9S.HTM] also included in 98SE2ME.EXE.

This requires at least 55 MB of free space on C: for the WinME files and at least 600 MB of free space on C: for the Win98 SE backup which resides into C:\W98SEOLD .

EXTREME CAUTION:
Early beta stage: experimental = risky!
