whats the bet it will kill all of the other ways of "cracking" XP off? or most of them?
will Microsoft get a bumper sales period around SP2?

yeah.. you never know.. maybe microsoft has made unbreakable security.. eg like the md5 hash on Messenger
FthrJACK
Oct 15 2002, 10:35 PM
nahhh, its an operating system, we have the program already, its not a new one like msn updates, and md5 is breakable, just not easily.
for a time PGP was unbreakable, but it can be cracked using a super computer, or if you have a collection of a few hundered machines working together and a lot of time

time to crack depending on the bit size of the key.

The way I see it and correct me if I am wrong please is that everytime you do a windows update the registry will be examined for changes that indicate a cracked key? Then the user receives a message that the OS is invalid (something to that affect) and WHAM dead in the water?
If true, then what is the point of running a cracked OS. I mean it is the OS afterall. Not like Adobe where you could operate your PC without it.
Yep, Linux looks better all the time.

IF (When) SP2 is released it will have been cracked for a few months. Windows-XP was cracked a year before it was released. Yes it was. What do you call corp?
Anyways the same will always happen. SP1 didn't even need to be cracked. Just a new serial and there are thousands of them. Microsoft cant block them all.
Anyways I doubt microsoft will ever be able to stop piracy.
It's not impossible it's just imposable. Good luck microsoft. Your going to need it.

Does SP2 affect corporate versions of XP? The ones that do not require activation?
Also someone already using a version of XP is not required to download SP2 so what about the people who choose not too download it?
Does windows update check the windows cd key every time it is used???
If it is not required to download it and there are corporate versions of xp around why do people say that SP2 will kill pirate versions of XP - Surely people can still obtain a Corp. version CD, install it and use it with no problems...

SP2 isn't even in the making yet (IIRC) just pre-sp2 hotfixes. So its purely speculation whether it will have a stronger protection against piracy. SP1 installed and slipstreamed fine with XP Corporate.

Maybe we won't even have to crack it. Some people might be able to slipstream SP2 into XP onto a CD. Would this be possible?

FthrJACK, how? If they DO have the keygen, then no one (with the corp. copies) would be able to install it since they would probably add all the pirated keys to SP2 so that it wouldn't accept them. But, again, who gives a ****, as long as you install all the hotfixes, aren't you considered to have SP2?

dont forget that windows xp sold copies more then any operating system
FthrJACK
Nov 7 2002, 08:15 AM
gamehead, they would have to add a whole lot of data for the CD checking. all the keygen does is generate keys and tests if they work.. if the checksum is right the key is valid.. even if its not in microsofts database of cd keys, they will know every key they have released ever for all versions of XP, and probably 2k as well.
to block all generated keys they will have to include some measure to check the generated key against the ms database. (in other words forced activation on all copies of XP be they corp or not)
it wont be locked, well i SERIOUSLY doubt it, i just wanted to know what people thought on the subject

even if it does lock you out or something.. it will be hours rather than days or months before someone finds a way to circumvent it, as always happens.
if it can be written it can be cracked.
