have you done anything inbetween the last session and shutdown?

Guess I would:

1. Start in DOS mode

2. perform a scandisk /autofix to let your pc check the hard drive in DOS.....see if it's clean. If you want to be prompted on any error, then don't do the /autofix....

3. I would then do scanreg and let the registry get cleaned up in DOS mode.

Then reboot and if no luck:

go back to DOS mode, try scanreg /restore and restore the session from the day you had the problem....(e.g if a problem happened today, you could restore this AM or yesterday's registry)

Then see....

Otherwise, you may need to reinstall W98...which is easy enough...

I'd take the above advice first, and if that doesn't work, write down the exact error you get and search support.microsoft.com for it.

There are several instances where a single .dll file is messed up and needs to be replaced from the original .CAB file

Last time I had a similar problem, it turned out to be a faulty RAM. So get yourself "memtest" and run a through test. It runs of a floppy too.
