As a side effect of my check of all files in SE SP 2.0 I have a list of all (?) updates for Windows 98 Standard Edition.

I think that preparation of the SP would be not so different in comparison with SE SP and therefore it would not need such a big effort.

But are there people looking for it?

Although most hotfixes are available, there is still not so short list of missing ones:

Q189591, Q190715, Q192117, Q192845, Q193473, Q195564, Q196008, Q217189, Q224073, Q233017, Q234697, Q240896, Q241134, Q242939, Q243048, Q254087, Q265528, Q269239

Is there anybody who could help me to obtain them?

And regarding Windows 98 SE, does anybody have Q329128, Q317796, Q271701, Q254660 (they are in MS KB) and Q277623, Q318307, Q268064 (just referenced in SE SP)?

If anybody has any of these files, please send them to p@s.cz.

See this forum page on how to email Microsoft support for Win98 hotfixes:
http://www.msfn.org/board/recommended-obtain-M-h-t31579.html

I can help you out with some of the updates you need-

Q189591 is NOT needed at all. Win98 Service Pack 1 includes this fix so get it here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/0...d349e/wucsp.exe
Q189591 has v4.10.2018 of the fixes while Win98 SP1 has v4.10.2019 so install SP1.

Q234697 is not neccesary as its only available in Japanese Win98 First edition, not English Win98 first edition. Read MS article Q234697 VERY carefully. Problem ONLY occurs in Japanese-language edition of Win98 and NOT any other language version.

Q240896 is not needed. Use WinME version of opengl32.dll file to resolve problem.

Q254660 NOT needed. Fix is included in Microsoft Intellipoint Software version 4.x.
Q318307 is included in MS Intellipoint 4.12 Mouse software. download Intellipoint 4.12 at MS Download center.

Q317796 not needed. Install DSClient for Win98 as noted in Microsoft support article Q323455 which includes Q317796. DSClient can be downloaded here:
ftp://ftp.catalyst.com/pub/cstools/support/dsclient.exe

Q269239 vnbt.386 update is found at this web site (aka. Q264650):
http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../264650usa8.exe

Hope this helps you out.

That would help some people that still have orginal like my cusion. Windows 98 first edition seems about the same as second edition to me besides the few patches, fixes. If you get the windows 98 se unoffical updates to work on orginal then that would be cool it would support all of 98 then. ok maybe se is better but.. still this would help people that has fe that wants updates.

NO WAY! Win98 SE (2nd edition) is much improved over Win98 FE (1st edition).
The unofficial Win98se SP does NOT work at all under Win98 FE because it's for Win98 SE ONLY!

Win98 FE is version 4.10.1998. Win98 SE is version 4.10.2222.
Differences between the two is that SE has FULL WDM [Windows Driver Model] support (meaning the driver files for WDM are only .SYS files, NOT .VXD files and that these WDM-based drivers can be used under W98/ME & NT5 systems), ALL Y2k fixes, and ICS [Internet connection sharing]. ICS is not included in Win98fe. Plus W98 SE has numerous obscure big fixes to W98 fe and supports more hardware.

I read one of soldier1st's post on another forum page that Win98fe is buggy and W98 users should upgrade to Win98se. I'm not kidding. Ask soldier1st yourself and you'll see.

Better in the long run to use Win98se instead of Win98fe. Win98se can be used on older/slower AND newer/faster computers. Win98fe chokes on the newest computers and latest hardware and should be used under older machines.

Thank you erpdude8 for your comments.

Q318307 is included in MS Intellipoint 4.12 Mouse software.  download Intellipoint 4.12 at MS Download center.
Yes. But I'm not sure with msmouse.vxd. Q254660 contains version 4.10.2223, Intellipoint 4.12 contains 11.40.852 - but surprisingly this file is missing from Gape's SP2RC3. My archive shows that this file (11.40.852) was in Gape's SP version 1.2, but not in newer. Was there any problem with this specific version? Then why not to use 4.10.2223? Do you know why? I see in my archive also version 11.30.393.

You wrote for opengl32.dll:
"Is this file freely available so it could be added to the service pack?"

Ask MDGx on how to obtain the opengl32.dll file and glu32.dll file from Windows ME.
If that doesn't work, email me so I can send you these files.

Q192845 vmouse.vxd is NOT needed Petr. Install Q318307 vmouse.vxd patch which is included in Intellipoint 4.12 software. When you install MS Intellipoint 4.12 mouse software [which requires Windows Installer 2.0 for Win9xME], the Q318307 patch for Win98 gets installed automatically which has vmouse.vxd version 4.10.2225. Q318307 CAN be installed under both Win98 FE and Win98 SE.

Q190715, Q193473, Q195564, Q196008, Q242939 & Q277628 hotfixes; I HAVE these, Petr. Click on my username and send me email.

Q233017 pci.vxd 4.10.2018 patch for Win98 is listed at MDGx's web site:
http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm
Scroll down his page and find the patch titled "Microsoft Windows 98 CardBus TI 14xx or 44xx Card Controllers PCI.VXD build 4.10.2018 Fix".

As for msmouse.vxd v11.40.852, ask Gape why it was left out of 2.0 RC. Better to install the whole Intellipoint software and not get Q254660, even if you're using a non-MS Intellipoint mouse.

I'm working on getting Q329128 patches for Win98 and WinME. Note for Win98's Q329128, you need the DUN 1.4 Q285189 update for Win98. Turn down once by MS but will try again.

And Q254660 is piece of crap silly hotfix for W98. It only added support for the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer mouse and not newer Microsoft mice.

As for the hotfixes I have, you should receive them sometime this Friday. I'm kinda busy working on more important stuff and I have to find the cd where I stored the W98 hotfixes on. I requested them from MS back in late March. I do a great job asking them and MS does give me what I want, most of the time.

I'm not sure why the newest version of cbss.vxd 4.10.2226 (Q295629) is not in the SP?

Maybe it would be good to have somewhere the list of
- hotfixes that will be added in the next release
- hotfixes that will not be added because they are buggy.

It's not very convenient to search everything in all discussions.

I didn't mean this table, even though it is very useful too. I meant something like continuous changelog, updated immediately after some feature is added/removed/modified/fixed, even between releases of the SP. So now I would see there lines like
- RUNPOST.BAT goto end bug corrected
- 2_4date removed
- Q891711 2nd release added
- Q888113 added
- Q891781 added
- REGSVR32.EXE updated to version xxx from yyy
- REGEDIT patch removed
- Qxxxxxx will not be added because of yyyyyy
- Q329128 will be added when available

So always when anybody will think that found some new patch or bug, he could check this table and see if you already know about it or not.

For Q277628 vfat.vxd patches, see MDGx's software essentials page:
http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm
I sent him the vfat.vxd hotfixes for W98/WME more than a month ago. search for vfat.vxd on his page and you should find them. so I don't have to send you Q277628.

As for msmouse.vxd v11.x, you need the complete Intellipoint software. having msmouse.vxd v11 by itself w/out intellipoint installed may lockup the system as Gape said. But if you install the whole Intellpoint mouse software (either version 4.01 or 4.12), it should work fine. My younger brother bought a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical device several years ago but it came with Intellipoint 3.2 software, which was buggy and caused a lot of random mouse movements in random directions. Updated it to at least v4.01 and things were stable.

Intellipoint 4.01 is the last version to support Win95 and v4.12 is the last to support Win98, ME & NT4. Versions 5 and higher will only support Win2k/XP.

Let me handle obtaining Q329128 patch for you Petr. if you can't get it from MS, let me do it instead as I have a very good success rate in asking them. You can only request one hotfix at a time. It won't work if you try to request multiple hotfixes at once. And it also depends on the MS support rep answering the hotfix request. Most reps are smart but there some that are just UNintelligent & could lead you in circles.

Read the whole forum thread on requesting hotfixes from Microsoft:

Sadly, Microsoft just emailed me saying the Q329128 hotfixes are not available at this time (at least I got a straightforward answer, so I'll have to take their word for it). So Petr and Gape, lets forget about Q329128 for now and let's wait for about a month to see if MS will offer it.

Q252187 esdi_506.pdr v4.10.2226 was included in SP v1.2 but was removed in future releases of Gape's 98se SP (starting v1.5) due to causing lockups before Windows 98se loaded on some systems. instead of fixing the lockups on some machines, it actually did the reverse in causing lockups in other PCs. So the Q252187 fix is for certain computers only [install Q252187 on IBM Thinkpad 600x machines only and do NOT install on other name brand computers].
Petr
Does anybody know what is the difference between these sets of files:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192112

File name Version Date Time Size
------------------------------------------------------
Vfwwdm.drv 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:35pm 15,344 bytes
Vfwwdm32.dll 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:38pm 56,832 bytes
Kswdmcap.ax 4.10.2043 8/10/98 9:29pm 51,712 bytes

and http://www.visiongs.de/vfwupd.exe that contains:

File name Version Date Time Size
------------------------------------------------------
Vfwwdm.drv 4.10.2000 8/21/98 4:56pm 15,600 bytes
Vfwwdm32.dll 4.10.2000 8/21/98 5:40pm 57,856 bytes
Kswdmcap.ax 4.10.2000 8/21/98 5:26pm 51,712 bytes

And now - What are newer? The version 2043 is much newer than 2000, but the date is newer for files from vfwupd. Yes, the date of the file can be changed easily, but even the internal date built-in inside the file in PE header shows August 21st!!
And also often newer files are bigger.

So - any idea?

Petr
Petr

Thank you very much, I have added them recently and did not so good search for them. So now are remaining:

Q192112 Kswdmcap.ax, Vfwwdm.drv, Vfwwdm32.dll 4.10.2043 (only if this is really newer version than vfwupd.exe 4.10.2000 with newer date)

Good find, Petr.
Original VNETBIOS.VXD from Win98SE setup CD is build 4.10.1998 , same as Win98 FE.
I don't think Gape has this hotfix [yet].
Because nobody I know has it, we should request it from MS.

As far as I know the only other fix is for WinME, and way back when I tried it on Win98SE it didn't work:

Microsoft Windows ME Networking Errors VNETBIOS.VXD build 4.90.3000 [identical with the one on the WinME setup CD] Fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=272991
Direct download [148 KB, English]:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../272991usam.exe

Gape:
Petr and I recommend to add VNETBIOS.VXD 4.10.2223 from hotfix Q265528 to next SP 2.0 release.

I have discoverd one additional hotfix needed - Q250514 for Windows 98 Standard edition, with spoolss.dll version 4.10.2000.

http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../250514usa8.exe contains the SE version only, 4.10.2223.

MDGx has spoolss.dll version for 95, 98SE, ME - but unforunately for 98FE not.

To fix the spoolss.dll problems in 98fe, Petr just overwrite that file with the WinME version [4.90.3000]. that's all. You can also do this for Win98se and not bother using Q250514. in fact using WinME spoolss.dll file under Win98 fixes more problems than what Q250514 does.

MDGx's spoolss.dll fix for 98fe/se IS 4.90.3000, but do NOT use this under ANY version of W95 as it wont fix the spoolss problems under 95 and can mess things up.

btw- Q196527 has dvdplay.exe v4.10.1999; for 98fe only.

that's right. parts of WinME such as the WinME spoolss.dll file can't be included in a Win98 fe/se SP (unless Gape has a license to legally put some WinME files in his 98se SP).

however, the WinME spoolss.dll file should be included in MDGx's 98se2me pack. ask MDGx if that file is in his pack.

bummer!

Q209321 Dblbuff.sys patch for Win98fe can be left on after installing Win98, Petr. The issue mostly occurs with installing OEM [non-retail] editions of Win98fe on fast computers. some IBM machines that have OEM 98fe have Q209321 pre-installed.

Q265528 CAN be installed under BOTH 98 FE and SE. Microsoft article 265528 is wrong!
The Win95 version of Q265528 is included in the DUN 1.4 update for W95.
The Win98 version of DUN 1.4, on the other hand, doesn't include Q265528.

Q243048 Apmbatt.sys is only needed if you run 98fe on a laptop computer. useless on desktop computers.

Q230791 is only needed if you actually use Firewire devices and that you have an IEEE 1394/Firewire expansion card installed to your computer and you use a firewire cable to connect your devices. I know for sure Sony computers have built-in Firewire/1394 ports. Even with Q230791 installed, Firewire support in 98fe is still weak and most 1394 devices really require at least 98 SE with Q242975 patch installed.

Q196527 Dvdplay.exe - only needed if you have a DVD player installed to your 98 machine.

There is no difference between OEM and Retail version in executable files, the only difference is in the license file and a few INF files. There is a possibility of semi-slipstreaming and then the updated Dblbuff.sys will be used during the installation - or not?

Yes, these hofixes are necessary just in special cases. But I think I try to prepare a service pack suitable for all computers, not just for desktop computers without IEEE1394 port and without DVD player.
I agree that trying to obtain these hotfixes should have somewhat lower priority, but they should be contained in the "FE SP" if available.

You CAN slimstream the updated dblbuff.sys file. though you must include it in the Win98 folder or wherever your Win98fe setup files are stored in (except on CD, unless you create your own W98fe setup cd & including the dblbuff.sys file). I did that and W98 setup did use that dblbuff.sys file. and you can keep it after Win98fe is installed.

Another difference between OEM and retail versions of Windows setup is the setup order. Setup prompts you to enter a cd-key (the 25-alphanumeric product key) near the beginning of setup in retail editions. In OEM editions, it prompts you for cd-key near the end of setup. It has been like that with Win98, 2000, ME and XP.

Petr, be sure to get others involved in trying out sybesma's thread on requesting hotfixes from Microsoft. I should not be the only one that has been taking action for several months now and getting good results in getting those hotfixes. I may be busy in the upcoming months and I may not be able to get those remaining W98/WME hotfixes.

Yes, I know, but so far I'm not sure if anobody would really need the FE SP.

I suppose to prepare the first version, based on Gape's SE SP 2.0, and then I will see what will be the feedback. Maybe W98 is really dead now, I don't know.

I've asked for Q254087 earlier this May and MS support told me it is not currently available. As for Q329128, I requested the WinME version of Q329128 and was told that wasn't available too. For Q265528 I've asked about this in late Feb. 2005; I was going in circles on that one 'til an intelligent MS support rep. told me that it was not available.

If anybody has any of these files, please send them to p@s.cz.

...and if Win98 hotfixes Q192117, Q254087 , Q265528 & Q329128 are not available by this fall or winter they may not be available anymore and MS may have been silently pulled them off their hotfix servers due to problems we are unaware of.

Does anybody have a list of patches for Internet Explorer 4.01SP1 shipped with Windows 98 Standard Edition?

It is probably not so important to incorporate them into the FESP but if it is easy why not?

A part of Service pack 1 was Internet Explorer 4.01SP2, I don't suppose to add so many files to FESP - I think nobody is using IE4 now.

I'm rather confused by versions, basic versins are:

I'm about to finish the very first alpha version and I'm still not certain what to add and what not. Here is the list with my current view:
1. Add new TTF fonts with Euro currency sign? YES
2. Add newest TTF fonts from 2K3/XP servicepacks? YES
3. Add Q272620/Q272621 sysdm.cpl 4.10.2224? YES
The 272621USA8.EXE package has TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.2222, but it is recommended by Microsoft as for Standard version too, the download locations are:
http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows 98/nosp/PKG11846/04.10.00.2224/free/5263_CSY_i386_zip.exe
http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows 98 Second Edition/nosp/PKG11846/04.10.00.2224/free/7337_ENU_i386_zip.exe
(files are password protected)
Q272620 KB article applies to Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition too.
4. Add Q258680 desk.cpl 4.72.3717.300 and powercfg.cpl 5.0.3103.1000? YES
KB article applies to Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition too, download location is http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows 98/nosp/PKG6586/04.10.00.2223/free/6611_ENU_i386_zip.exe
but the 258680USA8.EXE package has TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.2222.
5. Add unimodem.vxd 4.10.2012 and unimdm.tsp 4.10.2016 from IBM supplied package? YES
This fix is for users with Windows 98 in APM mode on the following systems:
- ThinkPad 760C, 760CD, 760E, 760ED, 760XD, 765D with the Mwave chipset
- ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770, 770ED, 770X with the internal ACP Modem

Is this fix harmless for all other coputers?
6. What vfw update to install? There are two:
Q192112 with file versions 4.10.2043
vfwupd.exe with file versions 4.10.2000
4.10.2000 files are more recent and also seems to contain more funcionality.
I vote for 4.10.2000
7. Add just only one file from Jet35sp3.exe (msjet35.dll) or the wohole update? So far I added just one file
8. Add Recommended update: Active Accessibility 1.2? Not sure yet.
9. Add Recommended update: Registration Wizard update? Not sure yet.
10. Add Recommended update: Critical Update Notification 4.0? Not sure yet.
11. Add Recommended update: Euro Conversion Tool? Not sure yet.
12. Add Internet&Multimedia update: Agent 2.0? Probably not.

15. Add Windows XP skin? Probably no.
16. Add WBEM 1.5? Probably no.
17. Add Directory Services Client? Probably no.
18. Add Remote Desktop Connection client? Probably no. Apparently needs XP license.
19. Add Windows XP ICS client? No, apparently license problem.
20. Add MS Virtual Machine rev. 3810 update? Probably no, depending on Gape.
21. Add security updates for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5.5SP2 and/or 6.0SP1: NO
22. Add security updates for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 4.01SP1 (Windows 98 component): YES
23. Replace Adaptec ASPI 4.60 by ASPI 4.71.2? Probably good idea, 4.60 is recommended ASPI layer for Windows 95 only.
24. Add so-called msinfo registry entries for fixes that are not required by Windows Update? I suppose YES but I'm not sure if there is any situation when they are needed.
25. Add QFECheck registry entries? I suppose YES but not sure in which way, whether every fix separated or one big entry for all files. This is good to see whwther any componet got accidently overwritten by older version or not.
26. Add The Microsoft® Layer for Unicode™? Probably no, it seems to be useless alone.
27. Add complete vcredist.exe package from Visual Studio 6.0 SP5? YES

42. GUI Scandisk + Sefeag with 137GB+ support? None suitable found yet.
43. Add Microsoft Media Player patches? NO
44. Add some other Power Toys from Microsoft? And are they freely available? And useful?
45. Add patched UPDATE.SYS for newer processors? NO, 4.10.1998 version has space for 6 micocodes only.
46. Add Microsoft Global IME 5.02? NO, too big.
47. Add DiamondCS WNetEnumCachedPasswords Lock Patch? Any opinion?
48. Accelerator keys patch for Notepad? Good for those who don't like Metapad. Will see.
49. What about to add an Internet shortcut on the desktop pointing to list of useful software for Windows 98? What should be there?

What unified name to use for Windows 4.10.1998 and the Service Pack? There are several variants:
Windows 98: Not specific enough.
Windows 98 Standard Edition: May be easily confused with Second Edition, SE abbreviation cannot be used.
Windows 98 Gold: Used by Mirosoft Internally, probably not well known.
Windows 98 First Edition: Absolutely Unofficial.
And what name for the package? Second Edition has sesp201en, this could be sp201en, gsp201en, fesp201en.... ?
I always supposed this SP to be close realtive to sesp, as close as possible, so many decision will depend on Gape too.

Please let me know your suggestions.

Agree.

Whole update or just one file... What's the matter?

10. Add Recommended update: Critical Update Notification 4.0? Not sure yet.
11. Add Recommended update: Euro Conversion Tool? Not sure yet.

Personally I don't want to add them. First, they're recommended. Second, some people doesn't need (or like) them.

15. Add Windows XP skin? Probably no.

Agree. I think, any cosmetic enhancements should be optional at least.

QUOTE
20. Add MS Virtual Machine rev. 3810 update? Probably no, depending on Gape.

This update is marked as critical. Also, it does not affect Sun JVM. If you have Sun JVM, it continues to work as primary Java VM.

On the other hand, it is big, I'm not sure now.

Please, don't forget that bigger registry causes slower Win98. Maybe a few WinUpdate registries should not affect the system much, but generally Win98 users has low CPU and RAM resources.

QUOTE
26. Add The Microsoft® Layer for Unicode™? Probably no, it seems to be useless alone.

Don't agree. Because if a program uses it (i.e. MSN Messenger), SP will update the Unicode Layer to the latest version.

30. Add complete Dial-Up Networking 1.4 package? YES
31. Add complete DCOM98 1.3 package? YES

Agree. But, SE SP has complete packages, too.

I think NTFS support is not a good idea. IMHO, there is not any good totally free NTFS reader for Win98.

Probably, I will return to patched Notepad.

So here is the first test version of the Unofficial Service Pack 2.0.1 for Windows 98 Standard Edition (4.10.1999):

Please keep in mind - this is the first published version, it has to be tested in all possible configurations - by you :-)

Rapidshare: fesp201en-a1.exe
MD5 Checksum: 09dbeac005e1105be90f19e015867939
SFV Checksum: 4A6C9110

Known install problem: Installer asks for location of Mrqt.dll file - just press enter, it will find it. Does any INF guru know where could be the problem? The same file is listed in two Copy sections, the first is OK, but in the second not?

General characterstics:
1. This SP is based on Gape's SP 2.0.1 for SE.
2. Contains all available (to me) updates and hotfixes for Windows 98 Standard Edition including IE/OE4.01SP1
3. Added Windows Update Engine/Client 5.3.3790.13
4. Added updated fonts
5. New hotfixes common with SE: Q240896, Q896358, Q323708, Q314941,
6. Updated Jpegim32.flt, Html32.cnv, Msconv97.dll, Mswrd832.cnv, Mswrd632.wpc
7. Uninstall almost broken, similar to SESP.
8. Semi-slipstreaming should work, not tested
9. Preserving should work
10. Tested on W98 fresh install, W98+IE5.5SP2 and W98+IE6.0SP1, system appears to be functional.
11. I sure fogot something important :-)

Please test and let me know, it could be possible that some hotfixes cannot be used for all possible configurations.

Any success / failure reports are welcome.
