A couple of things:

1. The AOL Art update should be in the SUPP.CAB file as it is not present on the 98 CD (psst... This installs with IE6 SP1 on 98 and NT4, but not on 2000. It's also included in ME and newer).
2. Why not replace msvcrt.dll to version 6.0.9787.0? Found in KB article 259403.

Good release otherwise.

The unofficial Win98 FE service pack 2 is still stuck in alpha 2 stage [since early July 2005] and hardly anyone is ever testing it or even downloading it since it is posted at that #@$*%#)% Rapidshare.de site which I REALLY loathe (aka. HATE). Petr made a poor choice of posting it there since that site does not offer resuming downloads unless you pay them for a "premium" account. a premium account at Rapidshare allows resuming interrupted downloads. UTTERLY RIDICULOUS!

I agree with you. You definitely are feeling the same pain as I have if you're still stuck with a 56k or lower internet connection.

I'm currently stuck with 56k. sad.gif

I am no longer using a 56K modem connection anymore, RJARRRPCGP. My brother and I upgraded to high speed DSL in middle of May (YAY!) thumbup.gif

anyways, the latest beta of the 98fe SP should be available from MDGx's web site when he posts it there. good thing is that MDGx's server is faster than Rapidshare and Mytempdir and supports resuming partial file transfers.

Be sure to get a third party download manager/accelerator to download very large files with slow connections, RJARRRPCGP.

Older AOL ART Image support files were included in the 98fe CD. I'll include msvcrt.dll v6.0.9787 in beta 4 which should also include media player 6.4.

nah, changed my mind. I'll use msvcrt.dll version 6.1.9844.0 from win2k sp4 and put it in beta 4 of 98fe sp2 instead. that file worked ok under my winme computer; i'll test it out under all editions of win98. same with msvcp60.dll version 6.2.3104.0 from winxp sp2. i've removed the TTF font files in beta 3.
erpdude8
I did find a problem with beta 3 of the 98fe SP. it will not install the Main Hotfixes & Updates part if Outlook Express 4 is not installed. The SP has to look for the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express" first. If that registry key is not present and OE4 is not installed, then the SP will not install the 98fe hotfixes at all. If that registry key is there and OE4 is installed then the 98fe SP will work as expected. This problem will be fixed in beta 4 so that the SP will install the Main Hotfixes & Updates part whether OE4 is installed or not. Beta 4 will be ready by next week.

Hi erpdude,

Not strictly relevant, but just FYI, I've been using MSVCRT.DLL version 6.1.9844.0 from win2k sp4 with 98 SE for a while now. So far there have been no problems, and there is in fact one example of a benefit I can give. I'm not sure of the connection or the details, but since I started using this version of MSVCRT.DLL, the CPU usage level reported by Codestuff Starter has dropped to what I consider to be more accurate levels. Previously, it was reporting on average 60+% when the system was idle. Since using 6.1.9844.0, low levels are reported.
the_guy
If you're using msvcrt.dll 6.1.9844.0, why not use version 6.1.9846.0 instead? It's in my SP, if you need to get it.

My quote from page 31 of "98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes" topic:
QUOTE
About the HLINK.DLL files from 920670: The hlink.dll files from the Win2000, XP & 2003 KB920670 patches have same byte sizes and same version numbers but they are NOT binarily identical. Compare the Win2000 version of KB920670 hlink.dll file with the WinXP version of KB920670 hlink.dll file using the WinDiff file comparison tool. Both are different in actual code.

I used the Win2000 version of HLINK.DLL from KB920670 under my WinME computer and so far, no problems.

I'll include these in beta 5 (not beta 4) in the 98fe SP. Beta 4 will be up early next week. No probs so far with hhctrl.ocx from KB922616. Be sure to install KB896358 HTML Help update first, then use the updated hhctrl.ocx file.

the hticons.dll file (if it exists) will be overwritten by the one included in the 98fe SP regardless if a newer or older version was installed.

If "Hticons.dll,,,4" was specified, the SP will install the hticons.dll file whether the hticons.dll file was previously installed or not and regardless of the version of the hticons.dll file.

MDGx & erpdude,

I downloaded and used erp's OSR2 Unofficial Rollup Pack 1 (URP1) Alpha 4 from your site the other day. MDGx, you linked to the earlier Alpha 3, but I haven't seen mention of this version 4 in the forums. Also erpdude, I couldn't see a link to the pack on your site. Any reason for that?

I'm new to Windows 95 (having been a user of 98 SE for years, I guess I'm not that "new"), but decided to try it out on an old box after someone gave me their OSR2 disc. The truth is that it's actually quite cool for me to have access to IE5.5, so that I can test how it displays web stuff that I develop. Anyone who develops websites according to web standards will know how bad Internet Explorer's implementation of CSS 2.1 is (for example), so I need (want) to know how my stuff looks in that old browser. erpdude, your pack is extremely handy. While I'm not too qualified to say how successful it was, it does seem so far to have done just the job I was hoping it would. Thanks man!

Perhaps if/when the 98 Gold and OSR2 URP1 packs reach maturity (have they not already? Why is URP1 still alpha? Surely the Alpha 4 is Beta-ready...?), they could each get a sticky like Gape's USP2? In a way, they are more deserving of sticky status now than USP2, since the latter is... well... frozen and (seemingly) practically dead in terms of future development, if not actually *dead*. I'm not suggesting that USP2 be unstickied - not at all! Just that these two projects are equally (if not more) deserving of stickification, since they are far more active and up-to-date (same goes for Auto-patcher... can't wait until it's on a dialup-friendly server).

I have Win98 FE SP1 Arabic , and I DID realize your SP2.08 is for the English version only, but I thought I should try it any way. Thinking what's the worst that could happen ... a complete re-install or upgrade to my windows "with-out loosing other dirs on my HDD" . Well, BIG MISTAKE!!!. My HDD got trashed and now even the setup from the CD wont work since Scandisk can't fully repair the damage.

Your installer started up alright , prompted me to select the components like it should, then it crashed halfway thru the file copy process. (computer crashed too)
So I am left with no choice but to reboot , I did and selected safemode just to avoid trouble, but it seems that came too late; even the safemode started showing BSOD and White Error Boxes (100's). Then I rebooted into Normal mode but the Registry Checker takes over and tries to "repair System files", then reboots . I kept doing the "repair system files
' and rebooting for 2 hours thinking it might be a different file each time but that was another mistake .. it messed up my system even further.

In any case, what I am trying to ask here, what can I do to restore my HDD / OS to its pre SP2 condition.
I've been a user of this OS for 9 years , and I've had many terrible things happen to it, but never this bad.
As for the backup, I did think of it before hand, but for some reason none of my 4 backup apps worked.

Any advice would be appreciated. If I could get the file list for the replaced files/ reg changes I could start with that.
erpdude8
ouch. you may have to re-install your Arabic Win98 FE install from your Win98 FE CD, VISTA98 after deleting the entire Windows folder from your HD. Boot from a Win98fe boot disk, load the CDROM drivers, DELETE the entire WINDOWS folder from your HD by using DELTREE, and run Win98 setup from the CD and re-install Win98fe.

well, that's kinda your fault. you were aware of the dangers but you went for it anyway. no one to blame but yourself
you'll need to delete the WINDOWS folder from your hard drive and re-install Win98 from your CD

Ok, the 98fe service pack project is now being resumed.

Link to get unofficial Win98 standard edition SP version 2.2.0:
http://www.usaupload.net/d/hc30c62pdr6

changes:
-added DirectX6 Media
-msvbvm60.dll v6.0.9798 from KB930828
-msvcrt.dll v6.1.9848.0 from Win2000 SP4 KB932590 hotfix
-OLE Automation 2.40.4530 (KB917423) with oleaut32.dll 2.40.4519 (KB924053/MS07-043) security fix
-updated canyon.mid & passport.mid files from Win2000
-flourish.mid, onestop.mid & town.mid files from WinME/XP/Vista
-new Root Certificates update
-new unofficial Aug. 2007 DST update
-updated dhtmled.ocx & triedit.dll files from Windows Server 2003 SP2
-updated Tahoma truetype fonts from Windows Server 2003 SP2
-MSE/Windows Script 5.6 build 8832 from Windows Server 2003 SP2
-updated USP10.DLL file version 1.422.3790.3959 from Windows Server 2003 SP2

known issues:
-a reminder that this SP is for English Win98fe systems only. installing this SP on non-English Win98 FE systems may cause unforseen problems.

-If unofficial MSE 5.7 is installed under Win98 FE and the unofficial 98fe SP is being
installed the SP will overwrite MSE 5.7 with MSE 5.6 build 8832 from the SP. Also the
SP may prevent the installation of older releases of unofficial MSE 5.7 under Win98 FE
because unofficial MSE 5.7 detects certain versions of some MSE files that may not
qualify for the installation of unofficial MSE 5.7. Don't worry, the next scheduled
release of the 98fe SP coming later this month will include MSE 5.7. Also, you can
download and install a revised version of the unofficial MSE 5.7 addon if you can't
wait for the next release of the SP. You will need to re-install Unofficial MSE 5.7
after installing Unofficial 98fe SP v2.2.0.

Is "DirectX6 Media" useful if DirectX 9.0c is installed ?

sort of. DX6 Media includes a few stuff that are not included in DirectX 9.0c such as DirectAnimation (though IE 5.x has newer DirectAnimation files than DX6M), WMP 6.0 and the Intel Indeo codecs. Win98 FE originally has so many outdated components, especially older DX Media files that DX6 Media is pretty much essential under Win98 FE.

Link to Unofficial Windows 98 FE SP version 2.3.0:
http://www.usaupload.net/d/2hatcmj1zzf

changes-

-replaced MSE (WSH) 5.6 with MSE (WSH) 5.7
-added MDAC 2.1 (from IE 5.x)
-added Unofficial MS Paint Graphic Filters pack
-added DirectX6 Media "DirectAnimation" fixes
-fixed minor installation problem when installing the updated dsound.dll file for DirectX 7
-removed option of installing TTF Font Properties Extension; this release installs it when installing the Win98fe fixes
-added option of installing the WinME Defrag, RegEdit and Scandskw tools
-added permanent 891711 user*.* 4.10.2003 fix

Starting from v2.2.0, the Win98fe SPs are pretty much AIOs (all-in-ones); hence the sizes of the 98fe SPs are quite bigger (hey, the SPs for Win2000/XP/2003 are at least 100Mb in size compared to the size of the 2.2 & 2.3 releases of the 98fe SP)

Hello erpdude8

Thank you for this new Service Pack thumbup.gif

As I'm translating this pack in french, I wish to add...

1) I noticed that a little mistake is appeared in the spupdate.inf file since the 2.20 version.
" DelFiles = DelDel.uninstall "

2) Logically, this SP replace the first (and alone official) Service Pack. Why adding some code to remove the SP1's file (csp.cab, csp.cat, %winbootdir%\$...UninstallUpdate98...$ and reg keys like uninstall) ?

3) Why did you remove Metapad from SP 2.2 ? A Service Pack isn't cumulative ? SP 2.08 contains this software and the later SPs not.

Q230791 is only needed if you actually use Firewire devices and that you have an IEEE 1394/Firewire expansion card installed to your computer and you use a firewire cable to connect your devices. I know for sure Sony computers have built-in Firewire/1394 ports. Even with Q230791 installed, Firewire support in 98fe is still weak and most 1394 devices really require at least 98 SE with Q242975 patch installed.

MS article Q230791 has been removed from MS support site, ditto with the Q230791 hotfix.

I won't bother retrying my requests for hotfixes Q254087, Q265528 & Q329128. I'll assume MS support scrapped these fixes for good, even though their KB articles are still posted.

Hi, erpdude8!

As you already know, the files for Win 98SE from Q329128 have recently surfaced in SESP30-alpha-1 and remain present in alpha-2. They are NDIS.VXD 4.10.0.2226; PPPMAC.VXD 4.10.0.2223 and VIP.386 4.10.0.2228, of course. But Q329128 also carries fixes for Win 98FE and ME. Yet, both in his anouncement and in the spupdate.inf included in SESP30-alpha-1, Gape refers to those files as if they were part of Q301453. And while both MSKB articles pertain to "multicast packets that have a TTL setting of 0 (zero)", Q301453 is for Win 2k/XP, while Q329128 is the correct article number for Win 9x/ME, and only Q329128 contains the above mentioned files. It is a fact that Q301453 points to Q329128 and vice-versa, but I don't see the point in referring to it in such a roundabout way. whistling.gif It is great that those files are now available, after everybody sought them for so long. And VIP.386 4.10.0.2228 IS better than 4.10.0.2227, for in some way the system becomes less resouce-hungry when 2228 is installed. I can't help but wonder whether Gape has the complete Q329128 or if he just found its files for Win 98SE somewhere. Gape, welcome.gif would you please be so kind as to enlighten us? You rock, both of you! Without your continued endeavours, our computing experience would be so much the poorer.
Keep on the good work! thumbup.gif Win 9x/ME forever!

I was supposed to release v2.4.0 of the english 98fe SP on Halloween but I'm postponing it until MDGx creates unofficial DST 943000 update for Win9xME. I'm removing the user*.* 4.10.2003 files from the 98fe SP and reverting back to putting the kb891711.exe and q891711.dll files and the user*.* 4.10.2001 files due to software conflicts with Tihiy's RP pack.

Without your continued endeavours, our computing experience would be so much the poorer.

dencorso, if you want the actual Q329128 hotfixes for other 9x systems like 98fe and ME you could try phoning Microsoft support for them since they may not offer them by email. Give MS a call and see what you can get from them. Tips on how to call Microsoft support mentioned here:

What CONTROL.EXE v4.10.2000 fix??? huh.gif
If you mean v4.10.1999 have care, because it is problematic.
Both fastlanephil and myself have had system lock-ups due to it. It's reported here.

Keep on the great work! thumbup.gif

fixed the typo. control.exe v4.10.1999 doesn't seem to cause lockups under Win98 FE since I do not use 98SE2ME and 98se2me is not compatible with 98FE.

A little off topic but regarding my recent problems with requesting Q301453 for WinME, I now got them for both English and Italian editions and MS gave me the right links for them.

Big Monstro may want to ask for the French edition of Q301453 for Win98 whenever he's not busy.
erpdude8
I'm almost ready to release version 2.5.0 of the 98fe service pack which will come in two editions: a full and a lite edition. They will be posted after Valentine's Day.

Full edition is about 50Mb while the Lite edition is around 27Mb.

Now I know the problems (random system-wide lock-ups) fastlanephil and I were experiencing were due to the now known incompatibility between CONTROL.EXE v4.10.1999 and 98SE2ME. Now I'm using v.4.90.0.3001 without any problems (Thanks erpdude8 and MDGx!). But I think I should write this to dispel any doubts I may have caused: CONTROL.EXE v4.10.1999 is perfectly safe for Win 98FE.

Keep on the great work! thumbup.gif

Whoops. I apologize for postponing the 2.50 release once again (hey I have good reasons why I have to delay the release) since I found some recent but minor problems with them. They should be ready by early March for sure once I finish testing them and I've fixed those minor problems that I recently found.
erpdude8
Ah at last, version 2.50 is finally here!

Unofficial Win98 FE SP 2.50 Full Edition-
http://www.usaupload.net/d/yewpi8d9czk
(file size 47.8 Mb - recommended for those using broadband connection and/or superfast Win98 computers)

Unofficial Win98 FE SP 2.50 Lite Edition-
http://www.usaupload.net/d/8u6ccpuwmhd
(file size 26.3 Mb - suitable for users having 56k dialup connection and/or slow Win98 computers)

Changes:
-removed DX6MEDIA.EXE file
-updated JSCRIPT.DLL to version 5.7.0.20550
-added WUPDMGR.EXE file version 5.3.220.1000
-updated NDIS.VXD, PPPMAC.VXD & VIP.386 files from Q301453/Q329128
-fixed minor install problem with the OE4 SP1 (Outlook Express 4.x) updates
-updated Time Zone entries from Q942763 and Root Certificates [ROOTSUPD.EXE]
-updated WMP 6.4 install package which now bundles updated DX6 Media codecs

Known issues/Problems:
-version 4.10.2003 of the PPPMAC.VXD file included in the 2.50 Full & Lite releases (and from the Q301453/Q329128 hotfix for Win98) is incompatible with Win98's NetBEUI protocol. If you install v2.50 of the 98fe SP on a Win98 first edition machine with the NetBEUI protocol already installed, Win98 will freeze/hang on the DOS screen [black screen with blinking cursor] and never load the Win98 desktop. To resolve this problem, boot Win98 into Safe Mode, access the Network control panel dialog box, remove/un-install the NetBEUI protocol and reboot Win98 into Normal mode. OR you can use an older version of the PPPMAC.VXD file (version 4.10.2002 or earlier) if you really need to use the NetBEUI protocol.

Also if you install the NetBEUI protocol from the Network control panel applet with version 4.10.2003 of PPPMAC.VXD already installed, Win98 will crash with a Blue Screen error message referencing the PPPMAC.VXD file and Win98 will stop working altogether after NetBEUI protocol installation.
