hello all, welcome.gif
im working on making a multiboot dvd and im following flyakite's guide, what im not understanding is the **boot.bin files that point to the setup folder and setupldr.bin. what i dont understand is why the setup folder has to be four characters. can it be more? i would just be nice to be able to actually have the ability to understand what is in what folder. thanks

the problem comes when you're editing a compiled file. If you add more characters, the internal addresses of the file to OTHER functions or text become and the file no longer works.

so if im understanding correctly, if you had the source code to loader.bin you could change the max number of characters accepted and everything should be fine from there right? if so any idea where i can get the source for loader.bin? i went to cdshell's website and downloaded the full source, only i dont know where the source for only loader.bin is.

thanks for the reply,

setupldr.bin is a Microsoft file, and no, they are not going to give you the source files for it.

Hmmm...

First, let me say, I wasn't trying to come off sounding like I was talking down to a "noob". I always try and help out where I can.

Second, it might help if you remove the house sized "chip" on your shoulder.

Third, from your comments in this thread, it seemed to me (and I could be wrong) that you didn't quite understand the topic. I say this, because the loader.bin that is used (and you were talking about) for CD Shell, isn't modified to point to different directories. It is the setupldr.bin file that you have to change the instances of "i386" to match your new directory name.

Fourth, So I assumed (and again maybe I was wrong) you meant the setupldr.bin file, because having the source code to loader.bin wouldn't do you any good to change the number of characters from 4 to whatever number you wanted. To do that you would need the source files for Microsoft's setupldr.bin file.

I wasn't trying to step on your toes, I really was trying to help out. Sorry for the mis-understanding.
Briar
ok
