That'll be allright MDGx as I can access the page now. It does not do it anymore. Thanks.

BTW, it was TR/StartPage.SX. A "dsldbaccess(1).exe" written in the TIF Folder while jumping from here to Tripod. A fullscreen popup appeared for a fraction of a second and then the antivir interfered.

PS : I wouldn't mind a couple of other demos so I'll drop you my email if you don't mind. It's quite interesting.

"Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub" Error Message with the InstallShield Program

SYMPTOMS
When you install a program that uses the InstallShield program, you may receive the following error message:
Unhandled Exception

Error: 0x80070725
Description: Incompatible version of the RPC stub.

Setup will now terminate.

New IE windows launched from a first instance wouldn't display any content as well.

I am almost sure (but not 100%) it was due to a 3.50.xxxx file and not to unmatched 2.40.xxxx subversions.

-testing the flaw: -any activeX website (IE) will show the flaw (won't even download the activex), and "safe" ones are at pcpitstop.com (one of my fav's; choose "full tests") or of course winupdate...
(those are pretty much the only sites I use IE for, otherwise strictly Firefox, w/the occasional IEVIEW-swap when FF chokes on a page... and pcpitstop has tiny downloadable script "AutoFixes" which are useful (and which will show the OLE bug), 3 I use all the time, especially for fresh installs: "IE cache fix", "Internet Speed" (set Receive Window to 32120, always doubles the speed for comcast cable modem users), and "Secure Sites Zone" fix, boosts-up your IntOptions security a bit, closes some holes)

-MDGx: -the regsvr32 batchfile: -yup, that's exactly what I did too, save some typing... I just wanted to ask you to make sure that I wasn't missing some recommended software installs/updates which would make use of those 6 "brand new" files from vb6sp6...

(ps: -any news about 98se2xp/2k3? I'm about ready to try the xp files which you mentioned in older posts, but I was wondering if there's an updated list, w/files added/subtracted? -I'm desperate to try to get rid of the last OS instability, and the most annoying: the famous WinMX memory leak... probably not possible, since the problem is within WinMX, but ANY potential stability improvement w/winmx would be nice... sux 2 B in queue for 3 days, babysitting it, for a huge tv-show file, and finally start downloading, just to lockup and start all over again...)

...A fullscreen popup appeared for a fraction of a second and then the ANTIVIR interfered.

-are u using the "AntiVir" antivirus software? If so, I used to use it too, until repeated testing showed several viruses that it missed, which other (free) A/V's caught... (plus occasional page faults, but those are prob gone since sesp201/98se2me...) Now I use Avast!, it has multiple scanners, is very good on speed/resources, and testing vs. other scanners was pretty impressive, especially for a free A/V... (only annoying thing is, it can only "clean" a file by first making a database-scan-backup of the whole system, which runs rather unobtrusively in the background, but is still a drawback)

I highly doubt that system upgrades will solve problems of memory leaks in third party software. If WinMX leaks memory, then its develloper(s) must fix this bug. I see that this soft hasn't been updated since more than a year.

-yup, I agree... but it's also well known that w98se isn't that great w/memory handling, too (especially resources), so if any updates might help improve w98's handling, it might trickle down a bit to slightly improved winmx stability (or at least maybe delay the inevitable lockup a little bit longer, or maybe not so bad of a crash; currently, if winmx crashes with a long, huge file download in progress, it loses ALL the downloaded portion, as well, since it doesn't save it to disk until it's done (or until you manually browse to the file, and right-click "Properties" or copy it, access like that automatically saves the downloaded portion to disk, while it's still downloading... a little trick of the trade... but otherwise, it's all lost, sometimes days worth of downloading one giant file)...

That problem was unrelated to the oleaut upgrade. Did temporarily downgrade to 4275 again. Error was still there. Reinstalling Media Player 6.4 cleared the error.

PsycoUnc, not sure what WinMX is[consider me dumb] but why do you not use a good download mngr w/resume for dlding file like that?
PsycoUnc
winmx is file sharing client, like napster, kazaa, emule, etc... can find absolutely anything on there, if ya work at it... but huge files, like tv-shows (400mb) always have huge "queue" (people waiting in line for that file), usually 50-100 people in front of ya, can take several days straight waiting for your turn...and if ya lose the connection, ya start all over... and even when it is your turn, often the upload speed is small, takes all day to get the whole file... gotta babysit it, annoying, but it works... (especially when I forget to set my vcr for a show)

Aaahhh, I see, I'm too:impatient, old, onery, etc, for that, why I never heard of. If they was handing out gold bars & line was too long, I'd probably miss out sad.gif

About VB6/VC6 SP6 files:
As far as I know those are just updates to make them compatible with other newer MS software/updates, but older versions of those DLL/OCX files should also work ok.
To find out if some of those DLLs/OCXs need to be registered in a different way besides using regsvr32, you could extract all INF files from VC6SP6 and open them up with Notepad, and look for related registry values, but that's time consuming.

About 98SE2XP/2K3:
Because one needs an XP or 2003 license to use those files, I can't just pack them with iexpress/pkzip/7zip/etc, and upload them at my site or somewhere else, because I don't want to risk having my site shut down.
All I can do to help is point you in the right direction, by telling you which files to d/l from MS servers, and how to extract which files, and where to place them + how to register them if u are using 98/ME.
Everything one needs to do in order to use XP SP2 files with 98/ME is posted here:

Everything one needs to do to use WMP10 files with 98/ME is posted here:

To get the latest TTF fonts from XP SP2 + 2003, please go here:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TTF
Besides that, the only other files [I have tested] that can be used with 98/ME are from 2003 SP1:

MSHTML.TLB
MSHTMLED.DLL
MSHTMLER.DLL
RICHED20.DLL
USP10.DLL

These all go into %windir%\system and the only 1 that needs to be regsvr32-ed is MSHTMLED.DLL .
Make sure u backup your original files 1st, just in case.
Please note that in order to use the MSHTML*.* files from 2003 SP1 u must have MS IE 6.0 SP1 already installed, and it is highly recommended to also install all current MS IE 6.0 SP1 updates/patches:

I have stopped using MS IE 5.5 SP2 a long time ago, so I haven't tested these [or any other newer system] files with 5.5 SP2.
All my tests are done using MS IE 6.0 SP1.

Please note that MS stopped supporting IE 5.5 SP2 and even 6.0 for all platforms [including WinME which installed IE 5.5 five years ago].
The only 1 they still support [until they release IE 7.0 RTM anyway] is 6.0 SP1.
They now post only critical patches for 5.5 SP2 + 6.0, but that will stop soon.
But they still post all categories of patches for IE 6.0 SP1, even critical ones for 98SE + ME platforms.
Therefore I strongly recommend to upgrade to 6.0 SP1, and then install all newest patches to have your PC up to date on most current security issues.
I have also discussed these issues in READ1ST.TXT:
http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT
under the "FAQ" chapter:
QUOTE ( READ1ST.TXT : [url=http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT)
http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT[/url] ]MUST install NEWest IE + ALL current Patches REGARDLESS of which browsers you
use to surf the web, because of Windows "browser integration". This means a
lot of system files from %windir%\SYSTEM used by your OS to access/connect to
the network(s)/internet are also part of IE browsing engine, and MUST be kept
up to date to avoid ANY known bug, flaw, security vulnerability etc, to avoid
exposing your computer(s) to spyware/malware/etc network/internet based
attacks.
MS stopped making patches for ALL older MS IE versions [5.0, 5.01, 5.5 SP1,
5.5 SP2 + 6.0] EXCEPT 6.0 SP1. That's why you MUST install MS IE 6.0 SP1 AND
ALL its security patches, because this is the ONLY way you can keep your Win98
SE computer(s) as secure as possible.
I don't like 6.0 SP1 either [I've got a huge list of bugs/limitations/issues], but I'm using it only because this is the only 1 that has current security fixes, on the par with Windows XP + 2003.

BTW, same goes for WMP9 and its security patches:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP

Hope this helps.
PsycoUnc
-but critical updates (security included), like u know/said, are still being offered for IE5.5... that takes care of any security issues, at least for now... when M$ finally ends that, then I'll be forced to use* IE6 ("upgrade" sure didn't sound rite, there, had to backspace that and sub "use"....lol)... why suffer needlessly until then?

Note that the IE Cumulative Update [896727] for IE 5.5 SP2 will normally REFUSE to install under non-WinME systems. If you are using other versions of Windows such as 98, NT4 w/ SP6, or even 2000 w/ SP4 AND have IE 5.5 SP2 installed, you'll have to manually extract the files inside the patch, then run the command "ieupdate.exe Q896727" to install the files AND you MUST reboot after the files are installed, even if the patch doesn't tell you to reboot.

note to MDGx: while I was away, I have asked for and obtained the msconfig.exe 4.90.3001 Q272719 WinME patch from Microsoft support. let me know if you need it and I'll be glad to send it to you after I test out the patch.

I really dont mind if W98/ME users use either IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6.0 SP1. I install IE5.5 SP2 on my relative's old (and ancient) pentium 1 pc (75mhz cpu w/ 32mb RAM) 'cause it can't handle IE6.0 SP1 effectively. I do, however, use IE 6.0 SP1 on my WinME machine, a pentium 3 (800 mhz) with 256mb RAM.

FIXED OLEUP.EXE = reverted back to older OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 from Win2000 SP4 = if already installed OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4526 follow instructions on screen to properly overwrite the newer one with older OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 :

Your OLE Automation Update needs to be revised again, MDGx. WinME users should revert back to OLE Automation v2.40.4522 files, ALL of them as v2.40.4526 of the files break ME's Help & Support Center feature. Helpctr in WinME will display a "cannot display page" error message when using v2.40.4526 of asycfilt.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll & stdole2.tlb files as I've recently used those files and tested them on my ME machine. Perhaps you may want to create a separate WinME OLE package (2.40.4522) that installs under ME only (like OLEUPWME.EXE). ALL of the OLE Automation files from the KB886765 patch should work properly under Win2k with SP4 installed; Microsoft forgot to mention in support KB article 886765 that the OLE patch requires SP4 to be installed first.

however, when I installed the OLE Automation v2.40.4526 fix (including v2.40.4526 of the oleaut32.dll file) under my neighbor's Win98 SE system, things seem to run fine [everything loaded ok]. what was the problem with the oleaut32.dll file? and can you create an OLE automation v2.40.4526 pack that installs under Win95/98/NT4 only? it's just that the OLE Automation 2.40.4526 files loaded ok under WinME but the Help & Support feature stopped working correctly, so I had to switch back to v2.40.4522 of all the OLE Automation files for WinME Help & Support Center to function correctly again.

these updates were posted late Wednesday morning at Windows Update [for those living on the West Coast in the Pacific Time region]; so I got these security updates at WU close to noontime Wednesday. there's also a Cumulative Security update for IE 5.5 SP2 [KB896688] for Windows ME.

the KB904706 DirectX updates can install under Windows 98 & ME. there are only 2 versions, one specifc for DirectX 8.x and the other for DirectX 9.0/9.0a/9.0b/9.0c. I believe you can also install them under Win98 FE as long as either DirectX 8 or 9 is installed.

IMHO:
New HTML Help update files should be left alone the way MS distributed them, because each type of OS [9x or NTx] has its own specific functions/features, addressed within those DLLs/OCXs.

I'm aware that the XP files are newer builds than 98/ME files, but as far as I can tell those builds are different on purpose, and each target a specific OS.

This update fixes the same security bugs for all OSes, so there [probably] won't be any difference in functionality, no matter which build is used.

Hi MDGX, I found that for re-enabling of local troubleshooter just small registry change is necessary. And it should be noted that if local troubleshooter is enabled, Windows Update will show Internet Explorer Critical Update again. Two small INF files are attached. AFAIK it is not necessary to install Tshoot.ocx again. Or is it? I just noted that in your file is version 1.0.1.2123 while in Windows 98 SE is version 1.0.1.2115 and in Windows 98 Gold is version 1.0.0.2004 (and does not use chm file). Hello MDGx,

Can you or anyone tell me whether or not the Unofficial HTML Help Update (HHUPD.EXE) that you linked to at the top of this topic and here:

http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#HHU

is a replacement for the official KB896358 HTML Help Update v1.3x/v1.41?

If it is, then does it change anything about your advice for installing KB896688, the IE Cumulative Update?:

Is the order still:

2) 896688 (IE Cumulative Update)
3) MSXML 3.0 SP7/MSXML 4.0 SP2
4) 98TSHOOT.EXE (or another solution to fix Troubleshooter broken by IE Cumulative Update)

If it is, then does it change anything about your advice for installing KB896688, the IE Cumulative Update?:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC

Is the order still:

1) HHUPD.EXE (replacing 896358)
2) 896688 (IE Cumulative Update)
3) MSXML 3.0 SP7/MSXML 4.0 SP2
4) 98TSHOOT.EXE (or another solution to fix Troubleshooter broken by IE Cumulative Update)

Unofficial HHUPD.EXE contains newer builds of HTML Help files from the Windows XP patch [same official patch described at KB896358].
This way [unofficial patch was suggested by erpdude8] one has the choice to install either the official KB896358 patch [older builds] or the unofficial KB896358 patch [newer builds].
And because files installed by HHUPD.EXE are newer, they will replace the older ones installed by official KB896358 patch [if you installed that one first].
Essentially these files fix the same security vulnerability, they are just meant [officially] for different OSes.
There is 1 difference though:
unofficial HHUPD.EXE installs also all HHCTRLUI.DLL files into %windir%\SYSTEM\MUI [that are also installed by MS IE 5.5 SP2, 6.0 + 6.0 SP1] for all supported languages.
Official KB896358 does not install any of the MUI [Multilingual User Interface] files, because it is meant only as a security fix, not as a whole HTML Help installation.

The install order of patches you list above is still valid as far as I know.

Hope this helps.

But as was also noted, it is questionable what build is newer and what build is older.
If you compare 5.2.3790.2453 (srv03_sp1_qfe.050525-1536 and 5.2.3790.309 (srv03_gdr.050413-1540) you see that the date 050525 is newer than 050413 but build number 1536 is lower than 1540. And of course one build is qfe and the second gdr.
My opinion is that it is better to believe Microsoft that for Windows 98 is intended 5.2.3790.309 (srv03_gdr.050413-1540).

Has anybody noticed any difference in behavior or functionality?

I am also aware of the different builds/file dates/inconsistencies, but erpdude8 wanted the XP version to test on his computer(s), so I posted it together with the other HTML update packages.

I have not noticed any difference of functionality between the official 98SE and unofficial HHUPD from XP.

Do you think I should remove the unofficial HHUPD?

I can also bundle the MUI files with the official 98SE/ME HTML files, and repost.
This way users have the choice of installing the MUI files, without (re)installing MS IE 5 or 6.

OLEAUT 4522 finally no good for me :

I hadn't used eMule since quite a long time and a few days ago I tried to use it again and to my surprise it systematically froze the entire OS (including mouse and keyboard) after about 5-10 minutes of use, forcing to reboot the PC using the power button.

I did downgrade several recently updated sytstem files in use by eMule to finally find out that the culprit was OLEAUT 4522. I did downgrade to version 4275.1 from VB6.0-KB290887-X86 to clear out the problem. This also apparently cleared a non terminal BSOD during boot that I was attributing so far to some vxd.

Could you try the OLE files from IE 6.0 SP1? They are in the OAINST.CAB and their version is 4518.

you might also want to try upgrading emule to the latest release, eidenk. OLE automation files build 4518 were first included in the original release of IE 6.

Please forgive my above posts but the problem still occurs. I have been able to run emule for several hours, then I went to sleep with eMule on and when I woke up the OS was frozen again. And at reboot the BSOD was here again. Apologies for jumping too fast to conclusions here but I was too happy to have it running again.

Hi MDGx,

I am bafled by this eMule error, it's several days I am after fixing that. Would you mind to send me a list of the module versions in use by eMule on your system so that I can compare it to mine.

Nirsoft's Current Process utility allows to do this in a few seconds and clicks : Select the eMule process, then jump in the lower pane. Right-click to select all modules, then save as text.

Thanks much if you can. Here is my email : eidenk@ntlworld.com

I have read in emule/p2p forums that emule can freeze if it has network problems with # of TCP connections or bandwidth issues, usually if you're behind a router (I've had net probs behind router with p2p, but no freezes or crashes, just not able to surf, or Vonage VOIP gets choppy... found out that win98 sometimes has probs with more than 60 ("half-open"?) Before installing WinME Q321635 hotfix, install Q305826 hotfix first. When I installed the WinME Q305826 patch on my ME machine, it removed the hard drive "spin-down" feature when attempting to put the PC on either standby or hibernation. Installing Q321635 on top of Q305826 or Q302103 restored the HD spin-down feature.

minor correction: version 2.40.4526 of the oleaut32.dll file will not work properly under Win95, 98, ME and NT4.

see if Petr sent you the Q278368 patch for ME.

Off topic eMule.

I finally sorted the problem by starting from scratch with eMule again and it's now on since 24 hours. No file versions problems at all. My BSOD was due to missing vnbt.386 from TCP/IP but that wasn't the problem either as my old eMule installation was still freezing the OS after fixing that.

Thanks all for your feedback.

Guys,

Let's make this clear once and for all:

OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4526 from Win2000 Q886765 hotfix [memory leak fix]:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE
is the ONLY file from OLE 2.40.4526 update above that does NOT work properly with ANY 95/98/ME/NT4 OSes.
ALL other 3 files from Q885765 above DO work properly with ALL 95/98/ME/NT4 OSes:

ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4526
OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4526
STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4526

Therefore OLDER OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 from Win2000 SP4 MUST be used instead.
OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522 DOES work properly with ALL 95/98/ME/NT4 OSes.

Therefore Unofficial OLE Update build 2.40.4526 [OLEUP.EXE] from:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE
can be installed on ANY 95/98/ME/NT4 OS without ANY problems so far.
OLEUP.EXE above installs all these 4 files:

ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4526
OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522
OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4526
STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4526

Hope this helps.

If I've been asking it is because I recalled the above post.
