MDGx,
I have just made an unofficial WMP7.1 update for Windows 98/SE/ME. I just need to make sure that it will work on ME without SR/SFP needing to be disabled.
As of my check, it will need to be for ME. I'll email you the patches in a couple of days.

Isn't the 892313 update superseded by 911565 (on all platforms except 2003 SP1 and 64-bit OSes)?

Thanks for making the patch.
I'll post it as soon as you send it.

Yes, the older Q892313 is superseded by newer 911565.
I have removed all links to 892313 from:

Thanks.

Hello MDGx,

MS06-006 patch is also available on standard download page:

Security Update for Windows Media Player 9 for Windows 98 and Windows ME (KB911565)

It is not necessary to use the Windows Update location and file name.

You will need to make the unofficial WMP 7.1 update install under Win95 & NT4 as well. there is a way to make WMP 7.1 install under Win95 and NT4 systems and is mentioned at MDGx's Media Player page:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm

Great job finding the MS download site for Win98/ME kb911565, Petr. I never thought MS will make that patch available there instead of just only the Windows Update site.

QUOTE (erpdude8 @ Feb 17 2006, 08:59 AM) *
the author of U891711 needs to use more "common sense" when dating and versioning files.
when giving kb891711.exe 4.10.2224 a date of 10/4/2005, and you revise it as 4.10.2225
you absolutely do NOT date it 10/4/2005. that can cause major confusion to Windows users
because they can not tell if the file was modified or not.

If Microsoft were to do such a thing in not changing the date of when a file was modified and the file was given a different version number,
I would be critical of them too.

I have obtained some XP SP2 hotfixes such as the 885295 ipnathlp.dll fix and the post-837001 [KB870753] fix. And yes maybe, MDGx, I may send you these patches (I'm feeling a little psychic) BUT after you post up the U891711 patch with the "corrected" date for v4.10.2225 of the KB891711.exe file. I insist that you post up the U891711 fix I sent you a few days ago so that when users download the updated U891711 fix containing KB891711.exe v4.10.2225 and Q891711.dll v4.10.2224, they will notice the newer build of KB891711.exe file has a different date than the previous build.
erpdude8
This might be a little off topic but on MDGx's NT4 Essentials page lists the unofficial GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.299 security fix for NT4. I now recommend this unofficial NT912919 patch be removed off MDGx's web site. The NT4 KB891711 patch has GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.7270 while NT4 KB835732 has 4.0.1381.7263 of GDI32.DLL. So the unofficial NT912919 patch has a seemingly OLDER version of the gdi32.dll file.

i put it in place by hand.

Same here. It created a directory - c:\program - and left npdsplay.dll there, except the file didn't have its .dll extension.

i just checked that and had the same, moreover, when i deleted the folder i got a "could impact installed program" warning

Thanks for this erpdude8 - good spot.

Although it certainly contains updates to my current root certificates, I tried to run this file and it wouldn't install them (on 98 SE with SP2.1, and 98 SE with SP2.1a and 98SE2ME). Could you explain how you installed them, if it involved anything more than just running the .exe file, please?

Running Rootsupd.exe not working, bristols? It should! Did you download the file cleanly? Try downloading the file again and running the Rootsupd.exe file. I just ran Rootsupd.exe file and the new certificates appear in the "Certificates" dialog box of IE. the actual files dont get installed though (it's been like that with previous releases of rootsupd.exe).

The IE "Certificates" dialog box can be reached by going to the Internet Options control panel applet, click on the Content tab, click on the Certificates button and click on the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab. that's how one can tell the new Certificates are installed.

QUOTE (erpdude8 @ May 20 2005, 06:41 AM) *
EDITED ON MARCH 15, 2006:

MDGx should revise ALL HTML Help packages to include version 4.72.2811.0 of Advpack.dll file as the older Advpack.dll file [4.71.1015.0] included has bugs.

I recently ran MDGx's HTML Help packages on the Win98 & ME machines and they did NOT execute the "EXTRAC32 /Y /E /L %11%\MUI MUI.CAB *.DLL" command. I found out why. It's because the unofficial HTML Help packages have ADVPACK.DLL file version 4.71.1015.0 dated 7/15/1997. I extracted the files included in the HTML Help pack to a temp folder, then replaced the ADVPACK.DLL file with a newer one [like version 4.72.2811.0 dated 12/11/1997] and the "EXTRAC32 /Y /E /L %11%\MUI MUI.CAB *.DLL" command worked. Looks like version 4.71.1015 of the ADVPACK.DLL file has problems and needs to be replaced with a newer version like version 4.72.2811.0. ALL Microsoft Windows ME updates/hotfixes use v4.72.2811 of Advpack.dll file and do NOT use the older Advpack.dll file.

I now suggest MDGx redoing ALL the unofficial updates he has made to include version 4.72.2811 of the Advpack.dll file [yea I know it's a pain in the neck but he doesnt have to do them all at once; just do some of them now and do the rest later], especially the unofficial ME updates. ALL should feature Advpack.dll v4.72.2811.

BTW - the CRYPT9X package he made, it should also contain version 4.72.2811 of the Advpack.dll file dated 12/11/1997. If it contains an older advpack.dll file, he should redo this patch now.

the CRYPT9X pack now contains v5.0.2013.1301 of advpack.dll file (GOOD!) which was included in the 128-bit High Encryption packs for older versions of IE.

About the Rootsupd.exe file I mentioned earlier: the downside is that while running rootsupd.exe, it does not give users a clue of what it is doing (no dialog boxes and no confirmation boxes of whether or not the installation was successful or if it failed). it just does a "silent" installation.
MDGx
To see what has been installed by rootsupd.exe, save the entire registry [using regedit -> Registry -> Export Registry file...] from before running rootsupd, then run rootsupd and then save the registry again under another file name.
Then compare the 2 REG files side by side.
BTW, you could use FC.EXE for this purpose [example]:

fc old.reg new.reg

You'll notice a bunch of new "Blob" entries.
Those are the security certificate updates.
More info:
IE desktop icon -> right-click it -> Properties -> Content tab -> Certificates button -> view lists.

Hope this helps.
erpdude8
I now recommend MDGx that he should remove the unofficial NT912919 GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.299 patch off his web site as the file contains a seemingly OLDER build of the GDI32.DLL file. The NT4 KB835732, KB840987 and KB891711 updates have much higher builds of gdi32.dll file than that and installing NT912919 may not work under an WinNT4 SP6 system with either KB835732, KB840987 or KB891711 update installed.

BTW - KB835732 for NT4 has gdi32.dll v4.0.1381.7263 while KB840987 & KB891711 have gdi32.dll v4.0.1381.7270.
erpdude8
And I also suggest MDGx that he post up the unofficial NT888113 hlink.dll patch. I send this to him a few weeks ago but he has not post it up. What is the bleepin' hold-up? Get it in gear, MDGx! Remove unofficial NT912919 GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.299 patch and post up unofficial NT888113 hlink.dll 5.20.3790.227 patch.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. Well, in this case, I'm none the wiser as to whether ROOTSUPD.EXE installed or not (because I didn't do a 'before & after' comparison of the size of my registry, for example). Thanks anyway erples.

I have a problem with the MP912452.EXE update for WMP9

When I try to run it, it says that I have to install WMP9.0 first??

I have sent a notification to the patch author regarding this matter.
I'll post updated patch(es) as soon as I'll get them.

The install order should not matter because newer file always overwrites older one [these are all standard MS patches built with iexpress].
If newer file already installed, will not be overwritten by older one, unless you specifically allow it.

Hope this helps.

I've been wondering, MDGx, the unofficial WMP 7.1 KB915565 patch is for "Windows 98se/ME"? Does it work under Win98 FE? if not, can you make it work under 98fe? WMP 7.1 does support all versions of Win98 including the FE edition.

Also, what ever happened to the 98SE2XP pack. cant seem to find it.

About the CRLUPD.EXE patch. I happen to find a copy of it included in the NT4 SP6a Q299444 Security Rollup pack.

I have fixed the update.

The only problem was that it wouldn't work if you had installed the MS06-005 911565 update for 98 and ME. I have resent the patch to MDGx and I am awaiting the new version to be uploaded by him.

Manual fix: Extract the files to a temporary directory and right-click the inf file and select install.

The disabling STMGR and SR are NOT needed because wmp.dll is not protected by Windows ME's sfp feature.

Strange, the rightclick method worked fine for me.

I don't know if this is helpful at all, but I recognise the error.
Sometimes when I reboot (never on a cold start) I don't have sound. Rebooting again or logoff/login makes it work again. But if I haven't noticed that I don't have sound and I start WMP9 (or XMplayer or whatever) than I get this error too.

I never figured out what's behind this (suggestions are welcome), but it is not WMP itself that causes it.

Yes, I did notice that the_guy is the author. Sorry for not making this clear.

The version of ADVPACK.DLL included in the patch is 7.00.5335.5 (winmain(wmbla).060317-1722), which is timestamped, strangely, 01 January 1980. The version I have in %windir%/system is 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158).

Any thoughts, the_guy?

AVOID using ADVPACK.DLL version 7.x! it might not be compatible with W9x/ME/NT4 systems.

WMP9 KB915565 patch for Win98se/ME has ADVPACK.DLL version 5.50.4134.600 dated 8/9/2004. Try using that one for unofficial WMP9 KB912452 patch and unofficial IE6 SP1 KB905495 patch [IE905495.EXE] for Win98/ME/NT4.

MDGx will need to make the unofficial IE 5.5 SP2 KB905495 patch [Q905495.EXE] work under Win95 as well.

I had been busy in the last several days & I'll be busy next week. I'll be back after Easter.

Erpdude8,
Minor correction: It's not WMP9 KB915565 but KB911565

I have version 5.50.4134.600 only in c:/programfiles/commonfiles/microsoftshared/.

The one in my systemdirectory is 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)?
Should it be replaced?

Thanks MDGx, as usual, for posting the latest monthly security updates. smile.gif

Just to be clear, there's apparently still an outstanding update for 9x, addressing two Explorer vunerabilities, that, at the time of writing, MS has not yet released:

QUOTE
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015
Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (908531)

QUOTE
Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition are critically affected by this vulnerability. Critical security updates for these platforms may not be available concurrently with the other security updates provided as part of this security bulletin. They will be made available as soon as possible following the release.

I have checked for the MS06-015 KB908531 updates for Win98/ME at the Windows Update site several days ago and I have checked again early this morning, bristols. STILL NOT posted! It looks like the KB908531 updates for Win98/ME have NOT been created yet. I know this happened with the KB891711 and KB888113 updates for Win98/ME. KB891711/MS05-002 was first mentioned in January 2005 but the actual KB891711 updates were posted in March 2005. And KB888113/MS05-015 was first mentioned in January 2005 but the actual KB888113 patches for Win98/ME were also posted in March 2005. that I remember.

Perhaps by the middle of May or June the KB908531 updates for Win98 & ME will be mentioned at Windows Update. I just hope the patches are not like the KB891711 Win98/ME patches that contain a different DLL and EXE files.

Thanks erpdude for checking again for KB908531. I really hope that it doesn't turn into a 891711-type situation. There's a good chance that 908531 will be the last patch issued by MS for 9x systems. What a way to go out that would be. newwink.gif

I guess MS has run into problems with it. It has been reported that the patch released for 2k/XP/2003 systems is causing problems:

Report about 908531 at Yahoo! News

Perhaps the fact that it hasn't arrived yet for 9x is a blessing in disguise.

maybe. minor correction to my last post. KB888113/MS05-015 was posted on February 2005 (not Jan. 2005) and the KB888113 security updates for windows 98 & ME were posted at Windows Update in March 2005.

Microsoft KB article 918165 has been posted to note the problems found in the KB908531 security updates for win2000, xp & server 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

note that MDGx told me last week Microsoft extended support for Windows 98 & ME until July 11, 2006 instead of June 30, 2006. here's the microsoft support site that says this:

Thanks for posting them MDGx.

KNOWN ISSUE: The updates for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 will not install if you have installed the 912812 update. I have sent fixed patches to MDGx.

Thank for the patches.

No problem.

@erpdude8: on your IE/WMP site, could you please modify the text for the 905495 updates to be as follows:
for the file IE905495.EXE: Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2/6.0 SP1 FTP client KB905495 update for Windows 98/NT4/ME
for the file Q905495.EXE: Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 FTP client KB905495 update for Windows 95
Could you also add the 2K905495.EXE file and the IE912812.EXE file.

@All: Who's with me that this topic should be a sticky?

the_guy

EDIT: @MDGx: the Q911567.EXE file is just for IE 5.5 SP2, NOT IE 6.0 SP1. The OS's there are correct

Corrected. Please see 1st post:
http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581

Also added updated DXM9X.EXE, DXM9XIE5.EXE, DXMNT.EXE + DXMNTIE5.EXE with newer DANIM.DLL + DXTRANS.DLL files from Q912812:
http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581
which are also posted here:

erpdude8:
I have recreated all DXM9X* patches to install on WinME without need for Coolkill/STMGR/etc..., same as OLEUP.EXE.

@MDGx: Could you also update that text on your IE page as well?

Ooops. Looked at the wrong update when I posted that.

Thnaks again MDGx.

I'm with you newwink.gif

Depends if Gape [forum moderator] considers this a "worthy" topic.
noguru
The OE update won't install on my system (Win98SE+IE6.0sp1). Doubleclick on OE911567 starts but I get the error that a file can't be found. When pointing the installer to right file I get a copy error. This happens with all files. Rightclicking/install on kb911567 likewise. There's also a start.exe in the (exe) archive. So I try it smile.gif
I seems to do something, command screen flashes by, but that's all.

edit: Checked file versions, nothing installed
bristols
the_guy (and MDGx), thanks for taking the time to compile and post these. But like noguru, I also had a problem installing IE905495 and OE911567 (98 SE English, IE 6.0 SP1).

Unlike noguru, the files did install for me, but not before I was prompted for 'missing files': with 905495, I was prompted for the MSIEFTP.DLL, and with 911567, I was prompted for the DIRECTDB.DLL file. On both occasions, the directory already suggested by the prompt window was the correct temporary directory containing the files. So, the files were found, and the installation continued. There was no 'reboot' prompt after installation (I guess that's intentional), but I confirmed that the files had been installed with SFC.
