You're right.
SCHANNEL.DLL is ver 5.131.2133.2 on WinME.
I took schannel.dll from WinME CD, renamed it to 128sc.dll and added it to cryptme.exe for completeness.

I discovered another "glitch" in cryptme.exe:
forgot to add nircmd.exe + start.exe to the SED file, therefore to cryptme.exe. ;-(
Corrected. ;-)

Please try cryptme.exe again to see if it works ok.

Thanks.

even the built-in "MS BACKUP" tool has this flaw; I've tested it, just like all the copy/zip/backup progs... it made me pull my hair out by the roots, for a very frustrating 2-wk period last year, when I was desperately trying to find a truly reliable backup method/tool...
Indeed, some of mine turned grey in the same situation, after discovering the 'big name' backup program I'd been using for years was chock full o' bugs. Of the others I tested, even Nero BackItUp, the one bundled with Nero Express and used by millions of people round the world, with all patches applied, truncated a lot of long file names with no warning.

Pity the poor foo' who faithfully runs their backup program regularly but never fully tests the restore, then after a bad system crash finds the manufacturer didn't either.

I have used XXCOPY a number of times for disk copies with great success, though I'll use the /tcc switch in addition to /clone the next time.

In answer to somebody's observation (sorry, a li'l rushed, trying to get to bed b4 sunup), XXCOPY displays nag screens only on 1st run and then again a few months later, whence if u download a free new one it shuts up for another few months. Though I hate nag screens I consider this a minor irrititation considering the functionality and configurability of the program.

Will be cutting over to XP myself over 6 months (will take a while with my many apps and learning enough XP tweaks to tame it) but I'm keeping 98 going on multiboot coz no doubt XP will be too newfangled for some of my older hardware & apps.
bigbadsteve
15 days til Micro$oft end Win98 support, tik tok tik tok... I'm hoping the h4X0rz will focus on XP for their new h4x since us Win98 users are a select minority these days.

Can anyone suggest a good website for new security headsup for after the 11th? Some of u brilliant geeks will no doubt actually write patch code as u have been doing, hopefully there'll be some simple workarounds for some other stuff... and I notice some exploits like certain wmf ones are caught by my virus checker. Helps if we know about new holes ASAP but.

I see there's http://www.cve.mitre.org/cve/index.html where they list vulnerabilities from all sources, but due to their 'editorial' control of listings, warnings could take a while to filter through to their webpages. Is there a better site? I guess ideally with an RSS feed or similar selectable by operating system.

About the 98FE SP: I don't think I'll have time to maintain that. Last I heard, Gape would be maintaining that SP.

the_guy

ok. so far Gape has done nothing with the 98fe SP.

alright. I've posted up beta 1 of the 98fe SP2 today. I've decided to make only beta releases of the 98fe SP; that way the 98fe SP project wont seem dead. I will NOT make any final & release candidate editions of 98fe SP since I dont have enough time to for those and I want to enjoy my summer vacation.

thanx MDGx. I have created the unofficial Notepad updates for Win95, 98 & ME; all three of them have fixed all of the blunders from the Notepad patches wiSHmaKeR made [his notepad patches dont work at all for win95, notepad displaying error message 'There was a failure in launching Wordpad' when trying to open 64kb or bigger files, etc.] Let me know if you need them.

and speaking of Notepad, take a look at this problem for the Win2k/XP editions of Notepad in this article:
http://bink.nu/Article7429.bink
but at least the Win95/98/ME editions of Notepad do not have the problem the Win2000/XP/2003/Vista editions of Notepad has.

However, in the Win2000/XP/2003/Vista versions of Notepad you can choose whether to save TXT files in Notepad either in ANSI Encoding or Uniccode Encoding from the Save As dialog box. From the Save As box, default encoding is set to ANSI not UNICODE. if you do the steps on that site to reproduce the problem but save the file in UNICODE format instead of ANSI format, the problem WILL occur. If you save the file in ANSI format, the problem will not happen.

It was just wat I read. Now I have tried to duplicate the "bug" and I'm not able to do it - in Windows XP, the file is saved as ANSI and opened as ANSI, everything as expected, so I don't know what the "bug" is about??
I have followed the steps exactly.

Alright Petr. The steps they mention are not accurate. Here's how I got the XP version of Notepad to choke on that bug-

1. Right-click on an empty area on the Desktop, select New, then choose Text Document (just leave the newly created TXT file named New Text Document.txt).

2. Open Notepad by double-clicking on the New Text Document.txt file and type in "AAAA BBB CCC DDDDD" (without the quotes) and Close Notepad & Save your changes.

3. Now double-click on New Text Document.txt. Notepad should just display "□□□□□□□□□" instead of the letters I mentioned earlier.

Again, a reminder that ONLY the Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 & Vista editions of Notepad have this problem.

Thank you, the bug works now, I don't know what I did wrong, maybe new line at the end of the line.

And as I mentioned earlier, the problem is not with the saving of the file, it is saved as ANSI as I'd expect because there are no special characters, but Notpad has problem with opening of the file - it incorrectly thinks that it is Unicode file.

I've created a June 2006 directX installer, and have tested it. It's just slimmed down a bit from the official download available @ microsoft. All NT components have been removed... as an SFX, it's 33mb compressed.

It will be included in the Win9x Power Pack compilation.

This could work:

Like I told MDGx, NO security patches released on July 11 for Win98/98se/ME because Microsoft ended support for Windows 98/ME on July 11 (probably at 12am midnight).
erpdude8
MDGx will also need to modify the names of the unofficial KB832353 Media Player updates and I have tested these unofficial WMP 832353 patches on my machines.

First of all "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.0/7.1 Patch" should be titled "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.1 Patch" as it will NOT work for WMP 7.0. I've found out that this unofficial WMP patch [WM832353.EXE] will only work if WMP 7.1 is installed. If WMP 6.4 is installed and NOT WMP 7.1, the LaunchWMPInf.exe file in WM832353.EXE will do NOTHING; NO files will be updated. Ditto for "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.0/7.1/9.0 Patch" as that should be changed to "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.1/9.0 Patch" < for this one [MP832353.EXE] to work, either WMP 7.1 or WMP 9 has to be installed AND should work under ALL versions of Win98, NOT just the SE edition.

If WMP 6.4 is installed only and NOT WMP 7.1 or 9.0 use the Q832353.EXE file to update Media Player 6.4 as the WM832353.EXE and MP832353.EXE files will NOT update WMP 6.4 alone. Description of this titled "Unofficial WMP 6.4 Patch for Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2" should be changed to "Unofficial WMP 6.4 Patch for Windows 95/98/98 SE/ME" when updating WMP 6.4 only.

It doesn't work because the vulnerability itself does not affect Windows 98/SE/ME.

That's the earliest version that works properly with all 9x OSes.
I replaced it because I want all my patches to have this version.
It is the smallest of all newer versions.

And besides, advpack.dll is only a helper DLL, does not install anywhere on your system.
If you had a newer one before, you'll have the same one after installing such "advanced" patches.

the_guy:
I noticed in some ME updates you did not include start.exe anymore.
I suggest to add it back in, because not all users have it somewhere in the path. Without it, nircmd commands are useless, and most system updates will not install on ME if SR/WFP is not "killed" beforehand.

I have uploaded all 3 Notepad fixes here:

@MDGx: I thought that Windows ME included start.exe on all systems. I 'll redo those updates in the coming days then, it looks like.

It does by default, but some people either delete manually c:\windows\command and its files or use 98lite to delete it.

I had this problem some time ago with somebody who wanted to install 98SE2ME, but previously used 98lite to delete all files in c:\windows\command .

That's why I include start.exe in all packages.

try again for KB817914. maybe it's still available.

I've tested MDGx's unofficial MP917734 patch for WMP 7.1. It does NOT work, even with WMP 7.1 installed.
I believe most versions of the WMP 7.1 files are version 7.01 instead of 7.10 such as original WMPUI.DLL file which is version 7.01.00.3055 (not 7.10.00.3055; WHOOPS!). KB917734 for WMP 7.1 has WMPUI.DLL version 7.10.00.3078. MDGx will need to redo the MP917734 fix for WMP 7.1 [hint- from its SED file, change TargetFileVersion of WMPUI.DLL from 7.10 to 7.01].

Also there should only be TWO unofficial KB832353 WMP updates for Win95/98/ME instead of three [just Q832353.EXE and MP832353.EXE] WM832353.EXE should be removed as MP832353.EXE does work under Win98FE and Win95 as long as the LaunchWMPInf.exe finds either WMP 7.1 or 9.0 installed and will install the appropriate files.

Use Q832353.EXE when updating ONLY the msdxm.ocx file for WMP 6.4. LaunchWMPInf.exe from MP832353.exe and KB832353.exe for ME will NOT update the msdxm.ocx file if either WMP 7.1 or 9.0 is NOT installed and WMP 6.4 is by itself.

It will need to be revised, the_guy. I've just found problems with it. It keeps on prompting me for the MSXML3.DLL file. Found out that the [SourceDiskFiles] and [SourceDiskNames] sections are missing from the kb909363.inf file. That's what's causing the installation problems. @MDGx: This might be a little off topic, but the usp10.dll fix for 2003 I sent you should work in your RICHED fixes. What is the difference betwen the 9X and NT versions of those anyway?

Also, my Textconv folder has a lot more files, but I pin that to having Office 2000 installed on my computer. The 5 files you have are the same versions as the ones on mine, with the exception of me having an older version of write32.wpc.

I was also suprised such an important fix was not yet published on the net. However today noone wants to use Windows 95, since we have Windows 98SE with 98SE2ME right tongue.gif

yup. one former Win95 OSR2 user I encountered online a few years ago had already upgraded to WinXP (and bought a new PC that came with XP).

MDGx told me several months ago the author of the Q249824 voltrack.vxd fix for Win98 will NOT create a Q249824 voltrack.vxd patch for Win95; forgot the reason why.

W95UPG.DLL
W95UPGNT.DLL

do a search on these files at Yahoo or Google.

w95upg.dll is a migration DLL file when upgrading from Win95/98/ME to Win2000/XP/2003/Vista
w95upgnt.dll is a migration dll file when upgrading from older NT versions like WinNT4 to Win2k & higher

i believe these two files are used during Windows setup when installing a new version of Windows

@MDGx,

I was looking at your Q912919.EXE file, and I just removed a whole lot of crap from it to make it more like the ME version. The 2 main INF's went down to 299 bytes, from 1.92 kb. The Q912919.INF file went from 715 bytes to 260 bytes. I removed the qfecheck files as they weren't needed, and I shortened up a whole lot of strings as well. I also removed the uninstall, as I didn't think it was needed. send me an email if you want my reduced copy.

Also, could you update your Riched files with usp10.dll version 1.0422.3790.2706 from WS919136.EXE? What's the difference between them anyway?

Thanks a lot.
I got your updates, I'll post them probably tomorrow, time permitting.

Please send revised Q912919.EXE .

I'll add USP10.DLL from WS919136 to RICHED*.EXE also tomorrow, time permitting.

I also got your older NT updates.
I'll post them in the near future. I'll let you know when.

Thanks.

ME Webvw.dll from 900725 should NOT be 5.50.3900.7069. Change it to 5.50.4134.7069 because original WEBVW.DLL from WinME is version 5.50.4134.100!

I happen to have newer FPX32.FLT file than one found in the GRPHFLTS pack; it was from MS Works 6.0 [2001].

also, need your take on what shadell said in his posts here:
