@MDGx:

On the note of the GDI fix for 918547 posted today, would you be able to get the author to make a patch for 98FE? Also, could you try to make the patched 98FE and the patched 98SE (4.10.2225) ESDI_506.PDR in 1 file, and then rename the file with ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2226 to SE48BLBA.EXE?

Slightly O/T: Would you be able to contact the author of the unofficial 918547 patch to see if they could patch user.exe and user32.dll to prevent the 891711 flaw.

hmm, looks like the author of 918547 will need to patch the 98fe GDI files.

the_guy, what is your input of the person at this thread suggesting to add an option to NOT install updated user.exe/user32.dll files from the 98se SP:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67610
unfortunately he's experiencing the screen saver taskbar problem in 98se. seems to be mostly fixed in WinME since I only get one screen saver icon taskbar and not multiple screen saver taskbar icons in ME.
the_guy
I'd say for them to either ignore the message or upgrade to the ME files.

Also, what do you think about what I'm asking about an 891711 fix?

the_guy
erpdude8
patching user.exe & user32.dll files in 891711? yup. like the idea. better than using kb891711.exe/q891711.dll files.

I did remember Tihiy patching the user32.dll file for 98se making it 4.10.2232. he didnt patch the user.exe file and made another DLL file, ti891711.dll. Tihiy's version of 891711 was for win98se only.

OR use the ME explorer interface under Win98se by installing either RPlite5 with Shell update or 98SE2ME with option 3 to install the ME GUI under 98se. The ME Explorer GUI prevents the multiple screen saver icon bug from happening.

MDGx's GRPHFLTS.EXE pack will need to be revised again. It still has a faulty INF file but now causes error message "INF Install Failure - Reason: Invalid INF File". I noticed now the GF.INF file is 85Kb which is WAY too big. Shrink it down and separate the info into two INF files. I'll send the revised INF files to MDGx.

@MDGx: If you do make an update for 98/ME/NT4 for 922616, there are some required registry ventries to include as well. If you want me to, I can make the updates for you, provided they do work without problem. Also, I have no idea what's wrong with the 910906 update.

@all: Has anyone seen an issue with either file (hlink.dll or hhctrl.ocx?). Also, I have made an unofficial 918899 update for 98/ME. All I did was copy the files over and copy the registry entries from 1 INF to the other (2000 to 98/me). It looks like it should work. Bonus: It will also work on NT4!

be sure to include NIRCMD.EXE in the unofficial 918899 IE patch for IE6 SP1 because when installing this under WinME, the SFP feature needs to be shut down by NIRCMD or the updated files will be rejected by SFP.

Better to included updated hhctrl.ocx file (from 922616) in unofficial HHUPD.EXE pack for Win98/ME/NT4 instead of creating separate patches.

none so far. though I would not use updated hlink.dll file from either 888113 or 920670 under win95 and will cause IE not to work properly under Win95. Use KB888113's or KB920670's Hlink.dll file only under Win98, ME, NT4 or greater.

* Microsoft Windows 98 Winsock 2.0 Error RNR20.DLL 4.10.2002 Fix:

Remove Win98 Winsock 2.0 Error RNR20.DLL v4.10.2002 hotfix OFF your site. Q192425 RNR20.DLL patch for Win98 has version 4.10.2003 of RNR20.DLL file.

and where's version 4.10.2004 of GDI.EXE & GDI32.DLL files for Win98? Has the author of unofficial 918547 patched those GDI files for Win98 FE yet?

corrections to some Win95 updates: Q259110 has mprserv.dll v4.00.964 instead of 4.00.962. Q237493 has timedate.cpl 4.00.955 instead of 4.00.952. Q245213 for Win95 does NOT resolve 64Gb HD Fdisk problem; only resolves "Non-MS-DOS Partition 8 GB+" problem. When partitioning 64+ HDs with FDisk, use Win98 Q263044 FDisk or WinME FDisk to do that.

About the HLINK.DLL files from 920670: The hlink.dll files from the Win2000, XP & 2003 KB920670 patches have same byte sizes and same version numbers but they are NOT binarily identical. Compare the Win2000 version of KB920670 hlink.dll file with the WinXP version of KB920670 hlink.dll file using the WinDiff file comparison tool. Both are different in actual code.

I used the Win2000 version of HLINK.DLL from KB920670 under my WinME computer and so far, no problems.

Maybe it happens because you use an other directory then standard C:\Windows\Temp
anyway you can simply extract the contents with e.g. winrar and then install using Q918899_d_RTMQFE.inf

Yeah, I did that.
Thanks for the tip.
I just copied the files from C:\TEMP [while the installer was paused] somewhere else, and then ran the INF.

But if other people also have %TEMP% variable set somewhere else than %windir%\TEMP , the installer won't work.
You need to account for all situations, no matter where the %TEMP% location is set.
Are you adding the temp directory to the SED config file?
If you are, you need to remove it.
If not specified inside the SED, the temp dir is found automatically by the iexpress installer, it just searches the memory to find the SET variable location.
In my case [example]:

SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
SET TMP=C:\TEMP
SET PKTMP=C:\TEMP [this sets the TEMP variable for PKZIP/PKUNZIP]

These lines are in my autoexec.bat.

lucky me I did not obtain the unofficial Q918899 patch for IE6 SP1. It needs to have ieuninst.exe, ieupdate.exe, mspatcha.dll files and that "SFX Manifest" file inside. And it also needs to have two INF files on there just like with KB916281 for IE6 SP1 under Win98/ME. Look at the KB916281 patch for Win98/ME and see how it works.

I'll send another WEBVW.DLL file to MDGx for ME900725 which now has the missing WinME GIF and WinME HTML wallpaper "resources". I added the resources from original ME webvw.dll file using Resource Hacker.

Thanks.

GRPHFLTS.EXE now works under Win95/98/ME BUT fails under Win2000/XP/2003 (and maybe NT4).

You are better off specifying [DestinationDirs] for CF as "CF=35353,MICROS~1\GRPHFLT" instead of "CF=28740,GRPHFLT". Win2k/XP/2k3 does NOT understand the 'CF=28740,GRPHFLT' part.

The [MicrosoftSharedDir] section
---
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion","MicrosoftSharedDir","","%35353%\%M_S%"
---
should NOT be there. This is why GRPHFLTS does not work under Win2000/XP/2003 as GRPHFLTS tries to look for a registry entry called "MicrosoftSharedDir" under Win2k/XP/2k3 in registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\" and it does NOT exist. So the [MicrosoftSharedDir] section needs to be removed from the GF.INF file.

use CF=35353,MICROS~1\GRPHFLT from now on and GRPHFLTS will work not only under Win95/98/ME but also under WinNT4/2000/XP/2003. Let's get it right this time since GF.INF was revised at least 3 times already.

Hi MDGx,

Regarding 98SE2XP.EXE:

Having running the installer, Explorer opened itself upon reboot at this directory seemingly created by 98SE2XP:

C:\Program\Windows

This directory contained the following archives:

MPVIS.001
WMPBAND.001
WMPNS.001
MPLAYER2.001
WMPLAYER.001

The files they respectively contained had all failed to install. So I extracted the files, gave them their correct extension (they all had no extension) and installed them by hand into the proper directories.

My Program Files directory is:

C:\Program Files

The directory "Program" and its subdirectory "Windows" didn't exist before I installed 98SE2XP.

I'll try to request this from MS today. when making an unofficial U918899 IE6 SP1 patch for Win98/ME/NT4, just include the RTMQFE files only. and include the updated urlmon.dll file from 923762 into U918899.

note that KB923762 is for IE6 SP1 only. other versions of IE don't seem to be affected when installing KB918899.

BTW - I found a problem with the directx_aug2006_redist.exe package. When running that under Win98 or WinME I get error message "The directx_aug2006_redist.exe file expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows version." I dont get this error when running it under WinXP. I noticed that this DX9.0c Redist pack was created from version 6.0.5482.0 of wextract.exe. maybe that might be the problem.

This is wextract from Windows Vista.
If you are interested, here are iexpress/makecab/wextract/advpack from Windows Vista: http://home.tiscali.cz/~cz053010/iexpress-5384.zip

There are unresolved references to kernel32.dll, functions:
GetUserDefaultUILanguage
GetSystemDefaultUILanguage

maybe because of the Vista multilanguage concept where all language dependent resources are in separate MUI files.

I made a better build, this time with the correct version information, icon, etc: http://rapidshare.de/files/29214017/dx9cAug06.exe

This is designed for Windows 9x Systems ONLY. Do not attempt to use it to update WinNT-based OSes. It only contains updates that have win98+ support. For August, there's only been a single cab file updated. I'll be looking into making an unofficial dx9c version, to see if any of the XACT files work with 98SE or higher.

Note to MDGx: I noticed when I recently downloaded the updated HTML Help 1.41 pack for Win98/ME/NT4 it now has the newer HHCTRL.OCX file. However, you need to change the version number of the HH 1.41 pack from 5.2.3790.309 to 5.2.3790.558 on your Add-ons page.

About 918899: There is a(nother) problem in urlmon.dll. Microsoft has provided a fix, in KB Article 923762. It includes newer urlmon.dll 6.0.2800.1567. Maybe someone could get it from Microsoft?

the_guy

I find it strange why the newest version of urlmon.dll
included in 918899 is 6.0.2800.1565
and the fix 923762 has 6.0.2800.1567
version.
Did they skipe 6.0.2800.1566 intentionally?

BTW - I found a problem with the directx_aug2006_redist.exe package. When running that under Win98 or WinME I get error message "The directx_aug2006_redist.exe file expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows version." I dont get this error when running it under WinXP. I noticed that this DX9.0c Redist pack was created from version 6.0.5482.0 of wextract.exe. maybe that might be the problem.
I have posted step-by-step instructions on how to install DX9c August 2006 Redist:

Hhctrl.ocx 5.2.3790.558 14-Jul-2006 17:32 519,168 Windows2000 SP4

I'd vote for the Windows 2000 version, does anybody know how to test the functionality?

Hlink.dll 5.2.3790.2748 22-Jul-2006 03:38 72,704 Windows2000 SP4
Will this work in Windows 9x environment?

Is anything from new Internet Explorer and Outlook Express updates usable in Windows 9x?

Petr
I have tried the new hhctrl.ocx from Win2000 fix on my 98SE computer for a week, and works ok.
I have opened + browsed through a bunch of different CHM files, created mostly for WinXP + 2003.

So I have added this new hhctrl.ocx version to HHUPD.EXE:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#HHU
Just download "Unofficial Windows 98/NT4 SP6a/ME HTML Help Update 1.41 5.2.3790.309".

I have [hopefully newwink.gif] fixed 98SE2XP:
http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#MP9
Please try it again, and let me know if it works ok.

Thanks for your feedback.

I believe MS updated only XP SP1 + 2000 SP4 versions of URLMON.DLL, which do not work properly with 98/ME in my experience.

The last 98/ME urlmon.dll version that works properly with IE 6.0 SP1 on my PC is 6.00.2800.1551 [from official cumulative update MS06-042].

I use BROWSEUI.DLL from newest MS security patch for 98SE, which I just posted here:
http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581
BROWSEUI.DLL from XP/2003 does not work properly with 9x OSes.

Hope this helps.
This mean deleting large files bug is fixed?
No, not to my knowledge anyway. sad.gif

The only fix I'm aware of is to replace the IE 6.0 SP1 BROWSE*.DLL files with older IE 5.5 SP2 files from newest cumulative update.

Looks good MDGx. Thanks for adding the patches.

On the note of the DXM patches, could you update the version of danim.dll to the versions included in MS06-042. For IE6, the version is 6.3.1.148, while for IE 5.x it's version 6.1.9.729 (last one only in IE 5.01 fix).

EDIT: Also, could you remove the IEPEERS.DLL fix for IE6 SP1 on all OS's as it's replaced by MS06-042.

NOPE! still does NOT work under Win2k/XP/2k3.

Delete the following lines from GF.INF file [follow EXACTLY what is written here, MDGx]:

---
[MicrosoftSharedDir]
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion","MicrosoftSharedDir","","%35353%\%M_S%"
---

also delete the "28740=MicrosoftSharedDir,5" line from the [CDS] section. Then it should work under Win2k/XP/2k3/Vista.

I have noticed when installing FLOPUPD.EXE (under Win95 RTM/SP1), FLOPUPD2.EXE or AMDK6UPD.EXE (under Win95 OSR2.x) Win95 scans for "new" floppy disk drives just like when Win98/ME tries to search for floppy drives during startup [which can make the floppy drive light flash on briefly]. In Win98 & ME, simply uncheck the option "Search for new floppy disk drives each time your computer starts" from the Floppy Drive of the File System dialog box of the System Control panel applet. I've figured out how to turn off the floppy drive scan feature in Win95 after installing FLOPUPD.EXE, FLOPUPD2.EXE or AMDK6UPD.EXE and it involves putting in some registry entries.

Again, no offense meant.
As for the Win95 SP, I was just hinking it there would be somebody out there still tinkering with me. You see, I have all WinOS installed in my multi-boot setup & another set as virtual drives.
I am using all the OSs to be able to come up with tools for troubleshooting, specifically taking screenshots of OS native tools.
Thanks much again!

Likewise, has there been a version for any latest unofficial Win95 SP?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

this is the first time someone like KIKI as ever asked for an unofficial Win95 SP. I may consider creating an unofficial Win95 OSR2 URP [update rollup pack] which is close to a service pack but unlike an SP, it will install a bunch of Win95 SR2 fixes without the INFEX dialog box, meaning there will be no option to select what to install. I may get started on this in September and put the 98fe SP project on hold for a few months. The Win95 SR2 URP will only be compatible with versions B and C of Win95 and not versions A and the original version of Win95. There are still a few users out there still using Win95 but I assume they are using Win95 SR2 version B or C.

Great news I've obtained Q923762 now with the
Urlmon.dll 6.00.2800.1567 version and included it in the
unofficial Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer KB918899.

I obtained the fix approximately 5 hours ago but had to test it first and there was no conflict so far.

The installer is now called with _v2 for volume 2 .

English IE60sp1_KB918899_v2_ENU.EXE

German IE60sp1_KB918899_v2_DEU.exe
