Hi gsjunker,

What is the best audio player?
Winamp or Foobar2000

Why do you prefer Foobar2000?
gsjunker
Hey lleoliveira,

I prefer Foobar by a mile because it's so extendible and customizeable, not to mention blazing fast. WinAmp 2.91 was great but version 3, and later 5, are slow as molasses and full of features I don't need or want.

Worth a try.

Hi,
Recently i downloaded a program called DirMonitor: http://www.esat.kuleuven.ac.be/~eschoofs/
(DirMonitor will enable you to automatically monitor files, folders, registry keys, services and processes.)

But i'm having problems with this program.
Anyone knows a program like Dirmonitor? with the same functions. thumbup.gif welcome.gif

Speaking of Spybot S&D, version 1.4 has now been officially released. I've been beta testing the beta & RC releases of Spybot 1.4 for several weeks and commented on them at their forums. This new version is a major improvement over the previous one [v1.3].

Download Spybot S&D 1.4 final here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Also newly released is Ad-Aware SE version 1.06:

I'll second erpdude's recommends on the updates, they're worth the time dlding[for dialup users like me], much improved & seem to have less drain on resouces too. May I also suggest for Firefox users the Deer Park 1.1alpha1, I have had for 3 days w/no probs yet, its a fast somebitch, I can tell you that, even on dialup thumbup.gif Can be had at Beta News:

Enjoy!

...and well, to anyone interested, here's my open source software list @ ReactOS wiki (contributors & testers needed too...).

Winamp 3 & Winamp 5 slow??? yeah right? are u using a slow computer, gsjunker?

I have Winamp 5.09 on my P3 766 mhz machine and my bro's P3 1.2 Ghz machine and it loaded fast & ran ok. I downloaded the lite version (uh yeah, Winamp comes in different editions so if you want to use the version of Winamp without the unnecessary features, get the Lite version of Winamp 5 instead of downloading the basic or full edition of Winamp 5). The latest release of Winamp fixes recent security flaws found in previous releases.

The creator of Spybot has written some articles & reviews on certain types of programs.

Go here to see a list of download managers:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/article...d-managers.html
the one I use is Download Express from Metaproducts; freeware

Go here to see a list of file sharing apps:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/article...aring-apps.html
ones I recommend are WinMX & Shareaza; both are free

it's more likely gsjunker must have installed the full edition of winamp 5, which might take a little longer to load than the lite edition of winamp 5. i even installed winamp 5.09 lite on my neighbor's win98 pc (pentium 75mhz with 64 megs of ram), and it loaded for about 3 seconds. the lite edition of winamp 5.09 mostly has the basic winamp player and nothing else.

azagahl, Opera 8.0b3 is no longer available as it reached the final release in late April. Go to the Opera web site and download the final version of Opera 8.0.

azagahl, Opera 8.0b3 is no longer available

Are you sure? I dug it up on some ftp site a while ago even after 8.0 was released.
I saved a copy of 8.0b3 because unlike 8.0 final, it works with the c't Magazine promotional registration.

BTW, I like Winamp more than Foobar. Foobar won't even play MIDI files. I also need certain Winamp plugins to listen to some strange music formats like gsf, usf, nsfe, etc.. There are no foobar alternatives AFAIK for these formats.

For MIDI files the shareware SynthFont is still the best. It does accurate sound font synthesis on your CPU. My old SoundBlaster Live! hardware is also great but isn't capable of handling more than about 50 MB of soundfonts. (Some freely available soundfont files are > 200 MB.)

Lately, with Winamp full they've been releasing a different free music tracks every few versions... Does anyone know what they all are called, or where you can get them all?

Does this work on 9x ? I have never tried it as it is labeled as NT, 2000, XP only by its makers Sysinternals.

Adobe Reader 7.0.1

Unfortunately doesn't, and it is much better than 6.0.2. Maybe kernelXP project could help - there are only few simple functions not supported. Any progress with AR7 Tihiy?

I've got it to load even w/o KernelXP with some simple enough modifications, but it fails to display EULA - looks like EULA module is checking OS and wants XP.
When version emulation will work, i'll give AR7 a try. rolleyes.gif
azagahl
it fails to display EULA

Sounds like a feature, not a bug smile.gif

Currently I use Acrobat Reader 5.1 (it's much less bloated) or 6.0.3. Also I use "arspeedup" project.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 is the last one to work under Win95, 98 FE & NT4. Acrobat 6.x requires Win98 SE (NOT FE), 2000, Millennium or XP/2003. I'm not going to get Acrobat 7. more bloated than versions 5.1 & 6.x. Currently I have Acrobat Reader v6.02 and have installed the 6.03 Update.

Recently released today or late yesterday---
New version of Opera browser available: 8.01
http://www.opera.com/download/
fixes a bunch of security problems and some display & javascript problems.

New version of Netscape browser available: 8.02
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/default.jsp
this one should fix most of the crashing problems found in 8.0 & 8.01.

btw - Winamp 5.09 lite loaded less than a second on my WinME & WinXP machines [both using pentium 3 cpus]. updated release mentioned at the majorgeeks.com site which should fix some recent security problems.

The size of my "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader" and "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader" folders is almost the same, about 85 MB for full install.

Adobe Reader 7.0.1 is much much faster than 6.0.3.
It requires Windows 2000 SP2+ or Windows XP.

Adobe Reader 6.0.3 works on Windows 98 FE fine, only the installer fails. There is very easy workaround - just copy kernel32.dll form SE to FE (surprisingly it works), then install and configure Adobe Reader 6, and then move back the original (FE) version of kernel32.dll.

Foxit? And why? It displays documents much worse than Adobe Reader, the text is often almost unreadable.

And Foxit just caused total system crash due to unsufficient resources. realmad.gif

No, thanks.

Acrobat 5.1 is alright for me. It loads significantly faster than version 6 and does not GDI crash the OS like 5.0. after 5 or 6 uses. Only problem is that it displays a compatibility warning box before displaying documents that have been created by Acrobat 6 and upwards. I haven't found an option to disable that.
