After installing the unofficial windows 98 service pack, i encountered a huge problem. Every time i restart my computer, Microsoft Registry Checker appears and says "backing up system files". It will continue to say that it was successful and that I should restart my computer. After restarting the computer, the exact same thing happens where the Microsoft Registy Checker opens. I cannot get to windows so I don't know what to do.

Is it possible to uninstall the service pack from MS-DOS, or is there anything else I can do? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The best way to uninstall Service Pack is to re-install windows98se from the original cd-rom.
Try rebooting in safe mode (press f6 when it restarts) then run the installation disc.
Or try rebooting with a bootable floppy (then you will have to type "install" or something like that or type the location of the w98 installation file, I forgot exactely how it worked)

Everything should be fixed after that.

Note that you must have the very last version of the pack since bugs like this one get often fixed with new releases. Don't hesitate to try a new version because it's realy worth it.

Note also that it's for w98SE only.

Thanks, I'll try that, but I can't even get into Safe Mode, so I'll try the floopy.
After installing Windows 98 SE, will my hard drive be reformatted and erased or will it still be in the same state it was before?

u can save existing files if u reinstall with floppy start disk

Edit: I can't seem to find the installation file on the disk. Now I'm wondering if my disk is the right one. I copied certain files from the Win98SE CD onto the floppy, will those work?

Edit: Can anyone tell me how to install Win98SE from the floppy?

boot from the floppy and change to the cd drive. the install program is "setup.exe" on the CD.
