Don't know when it happen , but setupx.dll ver. 4.90.0.3000 dosen't work
with 98SE--reinstalled ver. 4.10.0.2222--works fine--go back to new extract
of ver. 4.90.0.3000 dosen't work-ERROR rundll with setupx.dll when you use
ADD/REMOVE in control panel windows SETUP. Seems like ver. 4.10.0.2222
only works. Have 98sesp and 98se2me + option #3. Also have 98lite chubby
which adds too windows setup panel. Its been awhile since I used windows
setup, so I don't know what ver. of 98SE2ME it stop working in. As for now
I'm using ver. 4.10.0.2222

I started over last weekend with an old backup, windows add/remove worked,
installed Gapes SP2.01, windows add/remove worked, backed up my registry
and then ran 98SE2ME.Windows add/remove did not work. I restored my registry
from the backup and it still did not work. I then went to my unmodified version
of WIN98SE on another machine and compared the registry entries under VarLDID.
In the version that I had run 98SE2ME on the entries28720, 29600, 29601, 29602, 30400
were missing before I had run the update. When I was looking for this problem
on the web I could only find this problem as being a Windows ME problem.
It seems that Windows 98SE does not care if these five registry entries are missing
but with the updated files from Win ME it does. Below are the correct registry entries
for VarLDID for Windows 98SE. In case this problem ever shows up again as I could
only find the entries for Windows ME VarLDID on the web.

I don't know if this is your problem, hope it helps.

If any of these registry entries are missing windows setup in add/remove programs will not work.

Thanks RJM thats was the problem. ME ver. 4.90.0.3000 now works with 98se!
Hope MDGx adds this REG to 98SE2ME, because I had not remove any VarDID
entrys from reg.
THANKS AGAIN--I'm saving that file in case that does show up again.

The only software categories I know of that remove certain "VarLDID" reg values are viruses/trojans [on purpose ] and buggy registry cleaners [by mistake ].
TonyArts EasyCleaner is one of the registry cleaners that fixed this bug long time ago:

Also, I know that there are less VarLDID values in the 98/98SE registry compared to ME. These are the VarLDID values installed by a "clean" setup of:
- 98FE/98SE:
- ME:
IMO:
My advice is to carefully read the docs/reviews/user feedback for registry cleaners and similar tools, and avoid the ones with bad/dubious reputation, especially the ones that bundle adware, homepageware, spyware or are advertised as shareware/free trial.
Most importantly, make positively sure you create a full registry backup before using any software that alters your registry.

As I stated before, 98SE2ME does not touch any of these registry keys/values.
To see exactly which registry values/keys are modded/deleted/added by 98SE2ME, please open the INF + REG files from C:\9!M in Notepad. These issues are also detailed in READ1ST.TXT:
