Wanted to know how to add NTFS support in Windows 95/98/ME. No way of doing at the moment, so I wanted to know exactly how you COULD do it

just use any third party tool to access NTFS volumes under Win9xME systems, that's all. don't ask for any "integrated" ntfs support for 9x systems as that will never happen since 98/me are barely on life support & 95 is totally dead.

Take a look at this LINK.
It is a freeware file-system driver for winNT/2k/XP. It allows you to assign drive letters to your ext2fs/ext3fs (linux partitions). After that, you can use those partitions just like any normal windows drive.
If you need to use ext2/3 under win9x, then you need explore2fs.




Similarly, NTFS file-system driver for Win95/98/ME:
Paragon NTFS (win9x)
With this app, you can mount NTFS partitions to drive letters.
But, its commercial, not free.

As said in the thread linked to by erpdude8, the Datapol NTFS4DOS is the only FREEWARE read/write tool available for NTFS drives.

There are the commercial apps from www.wininternals.com too.

The filesystem driver by John Newbigin prathapml linked to is very good under NT/2k/XP, whilst with win9x system is still a bit experimental.

Sorry, it's only good for copying files off of a NTFS partition.

personally I prefer third party Win9xME & DOS drivers that not only read NTFS drives but also write to NTFS drives. Drivers that only read NTFS systems under DOS/Win9xME (and no write access) are half the fun. Read & write NTFS drivers for DOS & Win9xME make it complete.

I remember there was a Chinese-written NTFS read/write driver called NTFS98 or some similar name... but I don't remember very much about that

Virtual Volumes seems a promising project.

For NTFS in Win98, the Paragon driver is the best I have found- It costs about $30US, but is well worth the cost.

Someone had asked for a driver to see Linux drives too: You might try Paragon's Mount Everything Professional- It costs about $125US, but includes the Win9x NTFS driver, a Win9x Linux driver, and many others... including my fav R/W DOS driver too...

Others have said the Win9x/NTFS driver is faulty in some way, but I have had very good luck with it- My 9x testbench can often see damaged drives that stall Win2k or WinXP...
