WMP10 for XP *can* be installed on 98SE/ME.
I have installed WMP10 on my 98SE system ~ 2 weeks after MS released it, and [still] works great.
Download 98SEMP10.EXE.

Make sure u install in this EXACT order:
1. Official WMP9 for 98SE/ME:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP9
2. WMP10 Codecs + DRM for 98SE/ME [WMFDIST.EXE]:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#DRM10
3. Optional but highly recommended: install unofficial WMP9 for XP [u need to cut + paste your own scripts]:
http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#MP9
4. 98SEMP10.EXE:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#98MP10
5. All current WMP9 + WMP10 security patches for 98SE/ME:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP

WMP9 + WMP10 require MS IE 6.0 SP1 already installed:
http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX
Also make sure u install all current IE security patches:
http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#BRO
DirectX 9.0c is also required by certain WMP9 + WMP10 components:
http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#DX9

Hope this helps.

I am one of WIN98SE enthusiast.
MDGx's message posted on Apr 22 2005, 12:12 PM, Post #24 as a response on „how to install WMP 10 on 98 SE” has attracted me very much.
I tried his batch file „98SEMP10.BAT” right away, but after the PC reboot, I started the WMP, it is still WMP9.

I tried to look a little deeper to the batch file and found out that everything was properly carried out, i.e.,
- MP10Setup.exe was downloaded and extracted to the folder C:\98SEMP10
- WMBonusXP.exe was downloaded and extracted to the folder C:\98SEMP10\BONUS
- SETUP_WM.EXE was started from the folder C:\98SEMP10\BONUS carried out successfully
- 18 WMP10 files were copied to the folder %windir%\SYSTEM and registered successfully. Only 18 files because: WMADMOE.DLL was mentioned twice in his batch file, and there is no such file as L3CODECA.ACM in the folder C:\98SEMP10, there is only L3CODECP.ACM.

Was there soemthing wrong? It would be great if MDGx or someone else could please help. Thanks a lot!!
M_win
instead of those files shouldnt it be wmplayer.exe andl3codecp.acm?
to there proper dirs of course

Directly replacing WMPLAYER.EXE won't work, it will result in following 2 error messages when starting WMP:

„A device attached to the system is not functioning.” and

„The WMPLAYER.EXE file is linked to missing KERNEL32.DLL:DelayLoadFailureHook.”

It shows that WMPLAYER.EXE from WMP10 is not compatible with the KERNEL32.DLL Version 4.10.2222.

Somehow a step must have been missing. Hence comments from MDGx that may lead to a solution will be highly appreciated.
MDGx
98SEMP10

I've corrected the double DLL bug and properly renamed the MP3 codec file.
Now 98SEMP10 is completely automated.
Added also L3CODECP.INF to merge registry values for variable bit rates for WMP10 MP3 codec [L3CODECP.ACM].

Install WMP10 XP on 98SE unattended [a.k.a. hands free]:
Download 98SEMP10.EXE [100 KB].
Must read READ1ST.TXT first.

98SEMP10 adds most WMP10 functionality to 98SE even if you do NOT see 10.xx.xxxx version build when you run WMPLAYER or MPLAYER2.
MPLAYER2.EXE, WMPLAYER.EXE and other WMP10 files canNOT be installed on 98SE.
All files installed by 98SEMP10 from WMP10 have been tested to work properly with 98SE. ANY files other than those do NOT work properly.
If you add/replace ANY WMP10 files other than those installed by 98SEMP10, WMP or even Windows will stop working.

Hope this helps.

Wow thanks a million!

so even though its 9 its got functionality of 10?

thats cool i can even rip mp3s now.

The last message from MDGx has eliminated the misunderstanding.
The 98SEMP10.EXE (or previously 98SEMP10.BAT) is not installing WMP10 as such into the Win98SE, but rather is is implanting some of the WMP10 functionality into WMP9 in Win98SE.
Thank you MDGx.

Glad 2 b of service. newwink.gif

98SEMP10.EXE installs most of the files from WMP10, but some cannot work with 98SE/ME [those include MPLAYER2.EXE, WMPLAYER.EXE + SETUP_WM.EXE], but most WMP10 functionality is added to WMP9, which [because WMPLAYER.EXE from WMP10 is not installed] will still display 9.00.00.2980 [if installed official WMP9 for 98SE/ME: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP9 ] or 9.00.00.3250 [if installed unofficial WMP9 from XP SP2 on 98SE: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#MP9 ].

Hope this helps.

1. WMP Bonus was originally requested and suggested by some users when they found out that WMP10 "transplant" was possible, so I added it to 98SEMP10.
UPDATE:
I have subsequently removed WMP Bonus XP from 98SEMP10.

2. Yes, u do need DRM update, because WMFDIST.EXE also "transplants" newer WMP10 codecs into WMP9. These WMP10 codecs are better than WMP9 ones, as far as I'm aware.
I haven't checked file-by-file nor compared version builds if all codecs installed by WMFDIST.EXE are also installed by WMP10.

If u don't like DRM [I don't like it either], u can uninstall it completely by deleting these WMP9 files from %windir%\SYSTEM :

BLACKBOX.DLL
DRMCLIEN.DLL
DRMSTOR.DLL
DRMV2CLT.DLL
MSNETOBJ.DLL

NPWMSDRM.DLL = installed only if Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox detected, into C:\Program Files\Mozilla 1.x\Plugins (example).

Then u may want to delete these registry keys [cut + paste into Notepad to create a REG file]:
CODE
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Components\DRM]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Components\Informational\DRM_DRM]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DRM]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{760C4B83-E211-11D2-BF3E-00805FBE84A6}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{A9FC132B-096D-460B-B7D5-1DB0FAE0C062}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\TypeLib\{8AA720BF-7468-4DA1-97DA-66D2E41B3DDA}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9EA69F99-F8FF-415E-8B90-35D6DFAF160E}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Components\Installed\DRM_DRM]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\TypeLib\{760C4B74-E211-11D2-BF3E-00805FBE84A6}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\DRM.GetLicense.1]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\DRM.GetLicense]

;

so you won't experience any errors after deleting files above.
Make sure u backup these registry keys + files before deleting them.

Please note that both WMFDIST.EXE and 98SEMP10 install BLACKBOX.DLL [the only DRM file from WMP10], which afterwards u can delete, if u wish to get rid of DRM.
Also make sure to run the REG file above [again] after running WMFDIST.EXE + 98SEMP10.EXE.
Complete file list installed by WMFDIST.EXE is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=891122

PS:
I just found out MS updated MSKB 891122 to include the *official* Windows 98 (FE), 98 SE + ME update:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/c...22-x86-intl.exe
This means that extracting WMFDIST.EXE from the Windows 2000 update as used to be described here:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#DRM10
is now obsolete. newwink.gif

Hope this helps.

Theoretically it should work, but I'm not going to install Win2000, just to try this, it would take way too much time. ;(
What u can do if u use Win2000:
Install SP4, UR1, DX 9.0c, WMP9, IE 6.0. SP1 + all current OS + IE security patches.
All found here:
http://www.mdgx.com/w2ktoy.htm
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm
http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm
http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm
Download mp10setup.exe:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP10
+ wmbonusxp.exe:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP9
and then open them in PowerArchiver, WinZip or any other unZIPping tool that supports MS CAB format:
http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP
and extract all files from MP10SETUP.EXE and then from WMBonusXP.exe, just make sure they will be extracted in separate directories.
Then run:
setup_wm from the dir where bonus files are located to install Bonus XP.
Then open 98SEMP10.EXE in PowerArchiver or WinZip, and extract 98SEMP10.BAT.
Open it up in Notepad and look at the list of files copied to %windir%\SYSTEM and to "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player" by using XCOPY32/H/Y.
Copy them all to respective dirs, eventually cut + paste from the batch, and make your own.
Then run regsvr32 /s on all copied files [see lines in 98SEMP10.BAT].
Reboot.
Done.
Now to see if WMP works ok, play a few video/movie/MPEG/AVI/CD/MP3 files, eventually a DVD etc... offline, and then do the same online.
If everything still ok, then it can be done. newwink.gif

Hope this helps.

I know this is a 9x forum, but I want to mention that I have sucessfully installed it manually in Windows 2000 (and Media Player 9 from SP2 before) and everything works flawlessly, but, besides ripping in MP3, I haven't seen any improvements. Can someone list the improvements in MP10 in Win98/ME/2k ar most of them are just "under the hood"
I'd like to ask something more: there are many sites wich offer multimedia for only users of WMP9 or above (wmp8 and below cannot open them). Will there be any sites that will require MP10 and, if it happens, will this MP10 files add any compatibility with them?

Good work.
I've read about this once before here at MSFN forums [maybe it was you who posted ?], and I'm glad it can be done.
I thought of it as theoretically possible [see my reply to the_guy below], but I've never actually tried, because I don't want to reinstall 2000 just for this reason.

IMO:
It is safe to say that most improvements/changes are "under the hood" [or "in the background"], like:
- most security bugs from WMP9 were fixed in WMP10
- better audio + video hardware rendering
- MP3 variable rate encoding
- better/faster streaming over networks/internet
- updated DRM [this 1 I don't like sad.gif] to make WMP10 compatible with newer content protection and DRM standards.

And because not all WMP10 files can be "transplanted" onto 98/ME/2000, you will not see any "pretty face" improvements, like the new UI.
Of course, some may wish to "upgrade" to the new UI the "hard way", by hexing the DLLs [i.e. using ResHacker] and replacing the BMPs + ICOs, but that's an entirely different matter. newwink.gif

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your answer MDGx smile.gif . This is the first time I posted here so no, it was not me. About the interface I even felt happy it stayed the same it was (as I hate MP10's one - find MP9 much more organized, personal opinion newwink.gif ).
The only thing I miss (and this one is from MP9 from XP) is the ability to attach itself to the taskbar... What DLL is responsible for this one? Maybe I can try manually registering it to see if it helps... As 2k kernel is closer to XP than 98's one, maybe it can work

You're welcome.

I also like the ol' WMP 6.4 [plain = classic.wmz (classic skin)] interface better.

To make minimized WMP "dock" in the taskbar, u need XP, 2003 or Vista, because of file interdependencies. IMO explorer.exe has something to do with this "feature".

I advise AGAINST using my tips on removing WMP if you have WMP 10 installed on 98/ME/2k. If something goes wrong during the WMP10 removal process, I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE for your actions. I am totally AGAINST using WMP 10 in Win98 (hey if the main WMP10 EXE file wmplayer.exe doesn't work in 98, then I suggest you don't use WMP 10 AT ALL under 98). Last compatible version of WMP for Win98 FE is WMP 7.1 [WMP9 doesn't work under FE] and last compatible/stable version of WMP for Win98 SE/WinME/Win2k is WMP 9.0.

for those who really want to use wmp10 under Win98se, 2000 or me go right on ahead. I wont bother using the wmp10 files on my 98se/me machines so I'll save myself the hardships & problems of instaling/un-installing wmp10. WMP 9 is good enough for my W98se/ME systems.

Did you run the exe installers from within 98SEMP10.EXE or separately?
When run from within 98SEMP10, the 2 installers should work ok, unless you run them on any OS other than 98SE or ME.
The 2 installers do not work on any 9x OSes when run by themselves.

I presume you are referring to the WMP Bonus XP executable which runs from within 98SEMP10 [SETUP_WM.EXE] choices.
I know it shows 2 options [after the EULA dialog with the "I accept the terms of the license agreement." box checked]:

I guess I should add a note for everybody to select the "all components" option which doesn't return any errors on 9x/ME OSes.

I think the main topic should be renamed to "WMP 10 in Windows 98 SE" instead of Windows 98. When you say Windows 98, I assume ALL versions of Windows 98, including FE.

WMP 9/10 dont work under 98FE, only 98SE. so do NOT attempt to use WMP 10 under 98fe.

I've read somewhere in the unofficial Win2000 SP5 MSFN.org forum that WMP 10 wont run under Win2000. You might want to check there, MDGx. I'll see if I can find the exact link to where it said that.

OK. it was in the "Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861)" thread that someone said Media Player 10 wont work under Windows 2000:

WMP 9/10 dont work under 98FE, only 98SE. so do NOT attempt to use WMP 10 under 98fe.

I've read somewhere in the unofficial Win2000 SP5 MSFN.org forum that WMP 10 wont run under Win2000. You might want to check there, MDGx. I'll see if I can find the exact link to where it said that.

OK. it was in the "Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861)" thread that someone said Media Player 10 wont work under Windows 2000:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=58865

hmm, care to try to make WMP 10 work under Win2k, MDGx?
I guess it's up to M_win [topic starter] to change the topic title.

I will probably try WMP10 on Win2000, but I just need to decide to go ahead and reinstall Win2000 one bright sunny day. newwink.gif

thats cool i can even rip mp3s now.

Oh my. Please do yourself a favour and use Exact Audio Copy to rip and LAME to encode to MP3s. Both are freeware. EAC is the only ripper (asides from Plextools) where you can get a secure rip ... secure meaning that it knows when there's an error during the rip and will go back and re-read the disc until it gets it right. LAME is the best quality MP3 encoder around (Windows Media Player generally uses the very outdated Fraunhofer codec ... eg L3CODEC*.ACM).

(Sorry, I know this is offtopic so I won't post anymore about this on this thread.)

ok, scratch that earlier comment. I've just found a way to make WMP9 install under Win98 FE and it involves editing the control.xml file. Simply extract all the files from the WMP9 setup file onto a temp folder, edit the control.xml file in Wordpad, change ALL instances of 4.10.2222 to 4.10.1998, save changes and then run the setup_wm.exe file from the temp folder and WMP9 will be installed and functional under Win98 FE.

I wonder if MDGx might want to create a 98FEMP10 package just for Win98 first edition. anyone want to try using WMP 10 under Windows 98 first edition?

Hi and alas, a successful install
on Windows ME!

I found out about the 98SEMP10 last nite, downloaded
the tiles and printed the instructions; I finished the
install process this AM and after seeing that the
relevent DLLs were installed, I then tested WMP
by going to the three "mainstream" news sites (that
would not work with WMP9.0) and was successful
in playing the videos.

The install process was kind of "tricky" because at 1st
couple [of] attempts to run the 98SEMP10.EXE, I got the
MS-DOS Prompt box with nothing in it but the cursor.
I almost gave up on trying, but somehow, upon reading
several times, I did a cut & paste into the prompt box and
then it proceeded to download, huh?

I don't remember now, if this was before or after
seeing something about installing on windows XP.
I then ran the WMPBonisXP.EXE: I got the install on
windows XP message on that, too, but I did not see
anything about Reinstalling all components [box] or the
Media Player Skin Importer [box], so this [portion] of the
install process must be "transparent", since all is working
fine, huh?

So thanx again Mr MDGx, et al, and YES, WMP10 DOES work
on WindowsME!

98SEMP10 · UPDATED · 4-18-2006

* 98SEMP10: Unofficial Windows Media Player 10.0 (WMP10) XP for Windows 98 SE/ME:
http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/READ1ST.TXT
Direct download [100 KB, English]:
http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98SEMP10.EXE
Requires an Internet connection for downloading WMP10 + WMP Bonus Pack XP!
Requires MS IE 6.0 SP1:
http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX
+ WMP9:
http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#WMP9
already installed!
More info:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=53286

CHANGES:
* Removed:
I have removed WMP Bonus XP from 98SEMP10, because Bonus components are useless on Windows 98SE/ME, except for a few ugly skins. sad.gif
Moreover, now 98SEMP10 runs almost completely unattended, because Bonus XP Setup [SETUP_WM.EXE] was eliminated.
Another advantage is less download time [Bonus XP is 18 MB] especially for dial-up/analog modem/56k users.
And if u want more skins [all free]:
- WMP9 skins:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...ation/skins.asp
- WMP10 skins:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...more/skins.aspx
* Added:
- WMP10 XP skins are now installed into C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Skins [default]:
9SERIESD.WMZ
COMPACT.WMZ
QUICKSI.WMZ
REVERT.WMZ
- better detection for existing WMP folder: added %49301% code to L3CODECP.INF.
- 98SEMP10.BAT now terminates WinME running processes [SR/SFP/WFP] using START /M /W NIRCMD
- DEL %windir%\WININIT.LOG from within WININIT.INI upon next reboot
- DEL C:\_RESTORE\TEMP upon next reboot
- DEL previous WMP files [if any] on WinME from:
%windir%\SYSBCKUP
%windir%\SYSTEM\DLLCACHE
%windir%\SYSTEM\SFP\ARCHIVE
using MP10.INF from within 98SEMP10.BAT.
This way there is no need for CoolKill/Stmgr/Statemgr/etc workarounds anymore when installing 98SEMP10 on WinME.
Now 98SEMP10 installs automatically on WinME. newwink.gif

Enjoy.

I got these 2 error messages in the process of installin 98mp10

1.File copying problem
The unregmp2.exe file is linked to missing export kernel32.dll Get SystemWindowsDirectoryW.

2.Advance Inf install
error creating process <unregmp2/reguniv/update wmp
reason the system cannot find the file specified.

Now I was clicking the OK button and it restarted the computer.
I checked for the 98mp9 folder and it was there. But don't quite understand the error messages.

Thanks for your feedback.
My bad, I copied L3CODECP.INF into C:\98SEMP10, and then ran it from there, which means it executes UNREGMP2.EXE from WMP10 XP, which is incompatible with 9x OSes] instead of executing %windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE . sad.gif

Corrected.
Please download + install 98SEMP10.EXE again [100 KB]:

and then please let me know if it still doesn't work ok.
