Problem Description: I've just got the PC version of Fable, and I've got a problem with it. Every so often, the game just crashes and quites back to windows. It seems to happen completely at random rather than at any specific event in the game or after a certain amount of time.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has encountered the same problem? Is there something wrong with the game?

I've checked all non-essential processes in the Task Manager aren't running, but the problem still persists. I've checked my event viewer, but there's nothing happening at the time the game is crashing. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, that didn't work, and I've checked all my drivers are up-to-date.

I've installed the game on my brother's PC, and it works fine there. He's also running Windows XP SP2.

Anybody got any ideas?
hazard_abio
Did you check your Event log??

there could be a clue in there as to why the crashes are happening, probably give you something to search for as well. thumbup.gif

(Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer)
Lagamorph
Yup, checked my Event Log and there's nothing happening at the time the game crashes, it just....suddenly quits and goes back to Windows
tarquel
Have you tried the usual things? (in no particular order)

- Motherboard BIOS update?
- Drivers update (graphics, soundcard and chipset drivers specifically)?
- Windows all up-to-date with hotfixes?
- disabling A/V and other resident monitoring programs when playing the game?
- checking that your system is free from spyware and/or viruses? (yes, it can make a difference ppl lol)
- uninstalling the game - removing all temp files and files left behind (move the save games to somewhere else if ya wannakeep them) and install again with the A/V turned off
- Checked your HDD for errors and defrag'ed it for performance reasons?

Thats all i can think of right now biggrin.gif

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers
Nath.
Lagamorph
Yup, tried the lot. I just reformatted and re-installed Windows a few days ago too, and I've updated everything since then. I suppose I can try it all again incase I accidentally missed something or screwed up the installation twice in the same way without realising it both times.

I've been to Microsofts website, and the only suggestion they had was to reduce my graphics Hardware acceleration, which I did, but it didn't make a difference either ><
harunaksoy
Well i have a similar problem, i could install and play the game the first time but now it just crashed when i want to open the it. So i can't play it anymore sad.gif

hmm maybe i should check the event log tongue.gif

Well if you find anything useful in yours let me know. Mine's not coming up with anything at the time of the crashes

They always use that. What a cop out eh? lol

Good luck and let us know if ya find a way smile.gif

Any idea where the saved files might be? I bought a new computer so i'd rather copy the saved files than start from the beginning. confused.gif

Edit: never mind, found them

I get the same problem with Fable, and it does show up in the event viewer as an application error. Here's what it says:

Faulting application fable.exe, version 25.7.13.149, faulting module fable.exe, version 25.7.13.149, fault address 0x005fcbf0.

So what does all these actually mean?
ripken204
im guessing that it could be a hardware problem, give the full specs of all of ur parts, the psu is most important. also get speedfan to see how hot ur comp is running when playing the game, could be an overheating problem.
I_Broke_My_MHZ
Often times games keep their own error logs. Try going into the directory where fable is stored and seeing if there is an error log folder.
quinriva
Yeah I've also been having a similar problem, but the crash occurs at the same point every time. When you're an apprentice learning how to use the bow, you're just about to start shooting at mooving targets (at the end of the dialogue) and then the game crashes. Same problem everytime. This seems more like a game bug then something wrong with my computer though.
NeXs
my fable used to crash everytime i started it...
i tried several things like driver update, disabling the the onboard soundcard and some no-cd patch
i left the game installed on my drive, some days later i installed the vista transformation pack for windows xp....and again some days later i tried running the game again - and it worked.
my guess would be that my previous windows theme made fable.exe crash, i used windowblinds 4.6
...just my 0.2$.
dreamtime
OK

This may not be your problem, but it was mine, so to others who happen upon this forum with Fable problems....

I had problems with Fable crashing everytime I started it.

The installation notes (when I finally read them) detailed a problem with the Audigy 1 range of cards.

Having recently reinstalled my PC I found the creative did not have updates for download (UK site - apart from a DRM update).

So I reinstalled from the original CD.

And these drivers were the problem.

I found a web update on the American creative site...

http://files.americas.creative.com/manuald...4DRV_031031.exe

...and now the games runs.

Hope this may help someone.

AMD Athlon XP 3000+
Abit NF7-S V2
1 Gig DDR-RAM (2 x 512mb)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (128mb)
Terratec Aureon Sky 5.1
Antec PSU 450w (Don't know model number)

The running temp shouldn't be a problem as I don't overclock anything, and the CPU fan is a basic but sturdy one...

The PSU should also be good, as it has all those fancy power and surge management thingamajigs... I sure wasn't gonna be using the stock PSU that came with the casing.

What could the problem be?

THANKS NeXs!!!!!!!!

no problem dude, i actually signed up on this forum just to share my "info"
and you dont have to disable windowblinds, there is an option in windowblinds where you can add programs to an exception list, like..to ignore specified exe files from skinning

Yeah I am having troubles as well. When I launch the game, the montior flickers like it is loading the game, then goes back to desktop. No errors, nothing in event viewer. I know the game itself is fine because I installed it on my second computer and it loads. However, that computer is a peice of crap so I want to get it on my main PC

------------------

System Specs:

Windows XP SP2 (All updates)
Athalon XP 3200
Direct X 9.0c
Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT (Which oddly enough is not on the supported video cards list even though previous ones are - this is the same card in second PC though)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
1GB PC2700 Ram

------------------

I have tried the following:

4 different versions of the NVidia drivers (Currently using 77.xx as opposed to 78.xx)
3 versions of the sound blaster drivers
Disabled visual themes in the shortcut
Tried 6 different video resolutions
Uninstalled game, deleted all files, reinstalled
Disk Defrag
Disk Cleanup
Disabled the sound card
Setting Anti-Aliasing to 2x
Disabled Anti-Aliasing
Turning off all backround processes

I am out of ideas at this point =(

quinriva... have the exact same issue with it crashing to a MS VB C++ error prompt during archery training. I am currently in a dialouge w/ Lionshead & trying to collect as much data as possible about this from other people, b/c they seem to think it is a unique problem. Mind posting yer specs so I can kick them this thread and say, "HA-HA"... original thread and my spec are HERE

@Gunndar45

Now I know my specs are pretty low, but they do meet the minimum requirements.

Athlon XP 2800+ Barton
nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200i 128Mb (Pixel shader 1.1 (or 1.3, is there a 1.3 I can't remeber) support) - anyway the exact model is ASUS V8420.
Corsair XMS Pro, 2 x 512Mb PC3200 (DDR400)
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe-E, nForce2 Motherboard
Seagate 7200.8 250Gb, 2 x Seagate 160Gb, Seagate 120Gb and a WD 80 Gb

The PSU is a piece of s***, and has caused me problems in the past; however I believe that it is not responsible this time.

I reinstalled windows from scratch today and tried running Fable. Same problem, exactly as you describe Gunndar45.

I positive that it's not an overheating issue, my CPU is running at about 38 degrees (centigrade) and I'm sure my graphics card can't be any more than 28 degrees (the fan died a while back so I replaced the heatsink with a 2 slot behemoth).

Obviously I'm running Windows XP SP2 with all the hotfixes. Other than that there's nothing more that I can think of.
quinriva
Oh BTW, I don't have a soundcard. I'm just using the onboard sound. So the issues with bad Audigy drivers don't affect me.
Gunndar45
Hmmm, between you're specs, mine and a few other peoples with this issue I'm not seeing much in common hardware wise... I was running w/ on-board AC '97 audio, but just got a Creative X-Fi and I get the same thing. My bet is a coding glitch... guess we will just have to say what Lionhead has to say about it, until then I have a nice 4 pack of drink coasters for $50. Yippie.

Somehow I've managed to complete the game, for some reason it's stopped crashing quite so often, but still crashing none the less. We all seem to be having different, yet similar, problems with the game and with very different hardware. Like Guundar said, it's probably some kind of error with the actual game. Hopefully there'll be some kind of patch released for it or something...

I'm monitoring the Lionhead forums for patch info, will link any corresonding data here as soon as it's available confused.gif

Black and white2 review 50% not worth buying.

(I think they will be busy on B&W2 patches)

I have been in contact with Creative who are helping and confirm problems, lionhead are not responding to creative, so dont hold your breath.

Your monitoring the forums is appreciated, and ill be sure to follow any advice you can offer.

Y'know I never expected this thread to go on this long, lol. Looks like we've identified a major issue with the PC port of Fable here....
quinriva
Just thought I would let every know about this. Just something that we've figured out relating to the crashes. I didn't find this out myself but I have confirmed that it does work. So heres the full details:

Fable The Lost Chapters for PC, C++ Visual Runtime Error Crash to Desktop during the Archery training scene and others.
Cause: Apparently the game doesn't like non-standard keyboard layouts
Solution: If you have set the keyboard layout to anything other than the Default WASD layout change it back. If you have a DVORAK keyboard the go into Regional & Language Options (in the control panel) under WindowsXP or Keyboard under Windows 2000 and add:
English United States - Keyboard layout: US and apply this as the default keyboard layout.
And this should work. If it doesn't then it is likely that you have a different problem.

Take note Fable does not support GeForce4 MX series cards (they don't have pixel shaders which are needed) apparently there might be a work around but the game looks and plays like s***. Buy a new video card. Even a cheap GeForce 6200 would do the trick.
Also there is known issues involving Creative Audigy drivers. If you have a GeForce4 MX or a Creative Audigy then read the post relating to those specific topics.

Where would the Audigy post be located?
iron_guard
it is probably beacause the game was made with very bad computers so try playing the game for 2 hours at minimum specs (everything turned down to zero) or it is either that you are setting the refresh rate higher than what your monitor can handle. yes.gif

Ok here's a problem I have run into and its repeatable.

The game seems to want to crash at specific points where it autosaves after completing a quest.
The first time I experienced this was with the "Break the Siege" sidequest. The quest ran fine but afterwords I would attempt a save or autosave it would crash. I did not try anything here but simply sidestepped the issue by not doing the quest all together

The second instance is 100% repeatable and is Main Quest critical. At the Necropolis where you must dig up all the glyph tablets once I actually complete the quest and get the 4th tablet by defeating the "summoners" and opening the grave. I get the quest completed window and the experience rewards and the Summoner guantlet trophy and immediatly the autosave window comes up and then crashes to desktop.

I have tried to do the following:
Update my graphics card driver and sound card driver
Reduced video settings to lowest settings and resolution
Turned off music and sound
Adjusted configurations on character in game that had particle effects
Attempted clean boot procedure as described at support.microsoft.com/games

I have found no other documentation of this problem thus far or any patches to date on the game it being a fairly new release I don't suspect I will any time soon.

Setup is the following:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual 3800+
1.0GB RAM
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series 256mb integrated
Realtek AC'97 Audio integrated

Hm.....from what I can see....a lot of the problems seem to center around when the game tries to save. It looks like that's where the problem is.....ok that doesn't really help us get any solutions to the various problems we're all having, but at least we seem to be getting closer to a possible cause.

When the game crashes for other people, are you getting error message boxes or anything? Or is the game just suddenly crashing and you're brought back to your windows desktop with no error messages or anything like I get?
Varden
There have been instances where there was a world save in progress and the game shutdown and I got an error box saying it needed to shut down and I did the submit info. I would have to experiment more with some of my earlier saves to try and duplicate it to see what exactly happens.

In this case with the autosave it simply kicks me out to desktop with no error messages at all.

Here is the message in the Event viewer I received from one of the crashes last night.

No other errors are displayed in the Event Viewer for my crashes this morning.

On a side note after a crash during a save or autosave the save becomes corrupted and can no longer load.

I just did an uninstall and moved a copy of my save games out of the folder to try and see if this will fix anything.

I am fairly certain that during any crash with an Autosave there will be no error messages and any crash during a world or hero save will give an error message. I will try to see if I can duplicate this too.
Varden
Reinstall did not work for my particular case. Still crashes at same point and during autosave.
No error message no error recorded in event viewer.

Hero Save did work in the Necropolis area though.

Upon actually trying to restore a Hero Save when saved in the Necropolis it also crashes to desktop no warnings.
quinriva
This seems to be another coding error can you report details regarding:
The location of your save files (the game may considered some of the characters in the file directory to be illegal under certain circumstances)
Windows version including service packs
Keyboard and keyboard drivers (yes I'm serious, this has been one of the culprits)
Your keyboard layout, is it default WASD or have you changed it.
Insallation directory
background tasks

Anything about your computer that may be non-standard, for instance having you language settings set to a non-US language (for instance Australian English) can also cause trouble.

It seems that the game was only tested on 1 or 2 computers and that many of the errors seem to be stemming from people useing something that isn't a Genering HP or Compaq. That fact that you have a dual processor may well be the cause, the game may have some error trying to addressone of the processors during the save.

Honestly, the game isn't worth playing. If you're a fan of any decent RPG's like Morrowind, KOTOR or Neverwinter Nights, you'll be sorely disapointed with Fable. Where you are at now is the pinacle of the game. You probably already have the beast weapon and armour there is. Seriously I wouldn't bother.

One thing I've done, especially with graphics drivers, is go to the source! I'm using a nVidia GeForce4 MX440 card and get my drivers directly from nVidia Drivers Software page. Microsoft releases another version for use through Windows Update, but performance ALWAYS sucks. Intel drivers are generally on par with Microsoft WU site drivers, but the hardware sucks anyway.

Hope this suggestion helps!

Well add one more to the Fable All-star Crash Team.

MSI Delta KT600
XP 2500+ Barton (2x11) at 2.2 Ghz
(2) DDR 512 MB 2.5 CAS PC4200
Leadtek Winfast AGP 128 MB 6600GT

I've been running 2000 for ages, always updated via Winupdate. I was running Fable with the default specs, I tried lowering the resolution, the settings and it would lock up my sytem randomly on occasion, not a whole lot - just enough to occasionaly be a pain in the butt. Sometimes after 15 minutes, sometimes after 2 hours. Doing different things in the game.

So I decided to give XP SP2 a try and now it's even worse, and this after a clean install (not upgrade - that's amother story), updating to latest VIA drivers, most recent Nvidia graphic driver.

My BIOS has System Memory Cahe set to off, AGP fast writes, master 1WS Write, master 1WS read, Read Sync all enabled. DirectX 9.0c installed.

I'm going to try some other games but it looks like Fable is going on the shelf till a patch is released. Under XP it crashes every 10 - 15 minutes, even crashed in safe mode. The nicest thing though compared to a crash in 2000, is XP comes back up so much faster biggrin.gif

It seems like the main reason this game is crashing is because of AMD processors. My wife just bought this game and she has an AMD64 and had a GFMX4200. She got the C++ Runtime error. So we installed the game on my PC. Intel P4 2.5Ghz/GF5500FX. It works fine on my machine no crash at all. So we figure it must be the crappy video card she had. So I went out and spent almost $200 to get her a GF6600GT. Bring it home install it and the game....still crashes. Although the C++Runtime error is gone now the game still crashes. The videos play fine but as soon as the game tries to load it crashes or just pops back to the desktop. So now I'm going through her system with a fine tooth comb until I fix it.

Cheers,
JS

It does look like it is a common theme among the crashes listed here with the exception of Scottishhans who I believe posted he had an Intel Pentium 4 processor. Might be something to this though.
js33
UPDATE: AMD is not the problem my wife had with crashing. But the other common theme was Audigy cards which she has. We updated her Audigy drives to the lastest Beta driver with Open AL support and now the game runs fine. She also had a GF 440 MX and we replaced it with a GF5500FX.

But even with the newer card the game still crashed until we updated to the latest Audigy Beta driver.

I previously updated her Audigy driver but I guess I didn't go far enough with it before.

She's happy now and I can get back to what I was doing. thumbup.gif

confused.gif Does anyone have any new news about the Fable game crash problems I seem to be in the same situation as the rest of the people here, Renewed all drivers re-installed the operating system Windows xp with service pack 2, upgraded bios, minimised the acceleration options (though I dont see why I should if my computer spec exceeds the minimum requirements) you name it I tried it. When the game crashes it doesn`t always generate an error report and even when it does its not really that helpful. I have visited the windows web site in light of the error reports and quite frankly the suggested solutions don`t seem to be relevant as they refer to problems in servers most of the time.
The save game function only works for the autosave, If I try and load any of my saved games then fable just defaults to my latest autosave. The crashes are intermitent and dont happen at any specific point in the game. I have also tried the game without sound and it still crashes. I have recently replaced my graphics card (now its a radeon 9550) and sound card (now its a sound blaster live!) in an effort to resolve the problem but it did exactly the same with the new cards.
One thing that seems to be odd is that having set the screen resolution (1280x1024)32 in the video options of the game to match with my pc settings the game seems to adjust the screen just before it loads the autosaved game what exactly it does is difficult to tell.

This is getting to be an expensive pastime just to play one game!! I thought seriously about taking the game back and asking for a refund but the game doesnt look to bad from what I have seen so thats a last ditch option as most of the games I have seen recently dont appeal too much.

Any ideas anyone ??
fallvicitm
i get freezing issues only under slightly different circumstances. As the game starts to play and you take on the mission of finding your sisters bday present the screen flashes in the background, black and coloured triangles and shapes flicker almost like polygon stretch in the game background. The game last for different amounts of times sometimes only for maybe 2 mins, i even once got to where the village is attacked. When the game freezes it locks down the sound continues however and the only way to exit is by windows key !

Ive been trying to resolve this for a few weeks now. i have a 2.66 processor, 1024 mb of ram and a geforce 6 6000 graphics card. so teh spec is ok although i notice the cards not on the support list for some reason but ive heard of other users , using this card fien with the game

Ive gone as far to do a full format on the machine although i only have sp1 on disc and havent put sp2 on yet, another issues that i thought may cause this though i doubt it (any comment would be of help tongue.gif ) ive had to changed monitor from my normal flat screen to an old one from my win 98 machine due to pin damage, could an older monitor perhaps cause the above issue ??

any ideas ? or could this be just down to a badly designed game that wasnt tested properly ?

I am not sure if I can really be of any help but it sounds to me like your graphics card is having trouble processing the information its receiving. The real thing I cant understand with both your problem and mine is that the game is fine upto a point in time (which seems to vary) and then it crashes if there was a problem with the graphics card how does it manage to cope perfectly for a long time then decide to crash, to me it seems like the problem is elsewhere.
I recently learned how to use "windbg" a free debugging tool available from microsoft (it took some time setting the symbol paths up but now it seems to work). It analyses the rarely produced crash reports from this game (rarely is windows able to create a crash report). Every crash report says that it experienced a problem with FABLE.EXE and after analysis with "windbg" I see the problem points to a problem with a file called ati3duag which I asume belongs to my graphics card driver from ATI. I do have a full crash report but havent yet amnalysed it as I am still trying to learn more on how to use the windbg program its GUI is not really user friendly.
Enough said it looks perhaps impressive stuff lol but I am sure to a computer bod its basics.
I have some information now that may or may not be useful. It will be a place that I will be visiting before I ever put my hands in my pocket to buy another computer game from now on. The site I recieve e mails from to keep me posted about new pc and other games is called GAMESPY.com you may have already heard of it, well I found it has a rather useful tool on its site which performs an analyis of your system and tells you if your system is up to scratch for the game you are looking at. I am asking myself why the game designers dont do the same if they value their custmers!.
the analysis also has buttons next to the hardware analysis which take you to the hardware manufacturers web sites to look for updated drivers. Thats a 10/10 for gamespy to my way of thinking lets have less of this underhand busisness where you buy a game and then find out you cant play it with your pc specs! more open and honest information on the game boxes please game designers I tried reading the info on the box before I brought the game fable but even with reading glasses on It was still to small !! it was pin head size !! this is in my mind as good as a breach of the law as nothing at all.
I am still searching for a solution if I find it then I will let you know thanks for reading and sorry for the moaning but I just had to say something this has really annoyed me. I think of some poor kid out there who spent his last bean on this game and cant play it.

I am just about to jump off the building.................... realmad.gif

I bought the game 2 days ago i am so so eager to play the game.

Installed the game when i double click it says " This application has failed to start because d3dx9_25.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem"

So i did like a 101 times and still i got the same problem. I update all the drivers in my com including BIOS but nothing seems to work.

Someone please help sad.gif Please... i like this game a lot

My specs are:
