Silly question: do I have to have RP7 installed, for the thumbnails to work? Because I don't, currently, and thumbnails still don't work (no Thumbnails menu entry) after reboot.
(sorry, I must be in my blond period

)
No entry?

Was it there?!
If you didn't have thumbnails, you won't get them then.
You can try regsvr32 thumbvw.dll but i'm not sure
Drugwash
May 2 2007, 03:44 AM
No, there's no entry and never was.
I tried registering thumbvw.dll and it succeeded (gdipflt.dll didn't want to), however there's still no such entry.
My Explore.exe version is the original one from the 98SE CD: 4.72.3110.1 (because of that SlimBrowser fullscreen issue, that hasn't yet been solved).
I'm gonna reboot again after registering that dll. In the mean time, you may think of other reasons why I don't get the Thumbnails entry. And thank you for your patience.
[EDIT] Rebooted. No change.

I think that in the original Win98 explorer.exe you have to manually enable thumbnails for each desired folder by checking an option in the folders' Properties dialog, but I do not have Win98 with the original explorer installed so I can't verify.

May 2 2007, 02:31 PM
Yes, you are right, that's the trick.

Pretty time consuming, however, to enable thumbnail view for each folder on the HDD. I wonder if there's a general setting for that.

O.K.
I've has a look through the 940+ replies to this thread and can't find a single clue as to what the prerequisites for RP7 are.
So can some kind soul give me a heads up on what I should have to do to 98SE before I irreversible kill my system and have to scrub and reload.
I currently have a clean install of 98SE (OEM), updated with IE6.0.2600.0000IS (inc, Outlook Express), Windows 98 KB891711 Update (think came with the following) and the Unofficial Windows98 SE Service Pack 2.1a.
Do I need anything else?
Is the ME disc required?
Or only if you're RP'ing ME?
I haven't run the install for RP yet, are the answers to my questions revealed there?
I've had a look at Tihiy's website, and on the dowloads page there are some warnings.
I've noticed that most or a lot of the members on this thread have been doing the RP thing for a while now and all of this may seem obvious, but to a newbie it's not so obvious.
I thank anyone in advance for any kind of response to this request.

Two days ago my RAID vanished with my backups/stuff. I was able to restore most things, but not the main hard drive backup - big compressed image.
And yesterday my main hard drive with all my school/student works, images, VMs, projects, documents, videos, programs, music, life and soul died in f***ing stupid accident.
Why, GOD, WHYYYYY?!
It seems impossible to recover anything good / important. I'll try to find some HDD data repair service, but i'm not sure about success.
Windows 98 Revolutions Real/Virtual hard drives are dead. Source code is lost. Several pieces i hope to find in my Windows 2000 RP project code fork external backup, but i highly doubt if i'll do this.
Furthermore, all features that were planned for an RP update and all features i was privately developing for Windows 98 Revolutions is gone, too.
Bye for now.

I really hope Tihiy still has his main hard drive and hasnt done anything with it. I do a lot of data recovery for my job. I do a couple drives a day on average. I would try my hardest, for free of course, to get this data back. I PM'd Tihiy, lets hope the drive still exists. If I cant do it here with all of my tools I have access to a clean room facility to do the work of getting off the individual platters. I can probably convince them to do me a favor with the amount of business I send them.

Network Settings, Dial-up Connections( I'm not on dial-up, but it opens the setup wizard) appear to work fine, just the Network Status won't open with FF open, or even minimized.

revolutions pack 6++ and 7 are well worth a 9x user downloading and installing.most issues that i have encountered were due to the system not being properly updated before hand.So get all the official and unofficial updates first then use revolutions pack.
on another note..is there a sidebar equivalent for 98 that is fairly new? i know about the older versions of desktop sidebar but,not much interested in it.oh and here's a screen of my 98FE system running rev pack 6++ with the rev pack 7 toolbar and aeroblue theme..i have installed the webview items and thumbnail updates from 7 as well..not shown in screen...kind of a 7 lite like pack for 98 FE.

i would hate not to use rp any further, but i like webview enough that i will be looking for other skinning options if i cant figure a way around the errors.

Hello Curtis98
Cant think that it dont work? Try to install in these order.
Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.1a
982ME (if have, not needed)
ie6 (full install)
ie 6 culumative update (on win9x 4.1 update pack)
revolutions pack 6 or 7
REMEMBER TO HAVE YOURR WIN ME CD OR CAB FILES ON PC ROOT.
C:\WINME OR D:\WINME
Curtis98
May 29 2007, 03:04 PM
ok since im using 98FE im having to improvise a bit..
instead of 98SE service pack im using the FE version
i installed service pack 1 first then unofficial 2 for FE.
i already had ie 6 sp1 2600 build, but not the 2800 build..so im currently downloading it now.i also have downloaded the html fix,reg fix,and xml fix for that version of ie6 awaiting it's install shortly.
it seems the errors i mentioned reside with explorer.exe and maybe with iexplore as well..only the update will tell if it's rp version of explorer.exe or just me needing the updated ie6.i will post back with some results after i finish the install.and thanks for guiding me to the ie6 update

oh i did wanna mention a few things that 98FE users can do to add some of the items from RP7 to the RPLite6++ version without startbar errors...
you can download rp7 and open lame archive and extract the aeroblue theme and add it to the lame archive in rp6 and update the theme.reg file with the aero skin info and it will install and work just fine..you can also add in some of the other update dll's,etc..i'll expand on it more after i get a little more time.

oh well..as you can see..the update didnt work..thus meaning this is a RP related error...by the way Webview XP 1.0 is the webview you see in the screenshot..it's basicly html..and it works flawlessly without rp...but with you get those errors on every click you make within explorer while navigating..doesnt matter what you click...im uninstalling rp and gonna find another skinning alternative..its all i really want rp for anyway..need a stand alone lameskin...
for those on 98 FE who would like to use the webview and still have atleast XP icons etc...you can download desktop architect and xp theme 2.0..and it'll do ya right..wont skin taskbar etc..but you'll get a nice xp icon set, wallpapers, etc and webview will be compatible...
anyway..worth a try.

Hey there Curtis98
I had an error like that before.... In what order do you install? Remember you must first install all the "WIN9X" updates, with RP 7 last, then you install the apps you want
like this
Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.1a
IE 6 FULL INSTALL
IE 6 update
you can download the powerpack here. (
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_9x_Power_Pack_d5201.html) dont install hotfixes and patches for ie6. just the update on the powerpack
then install your apps. hope this work
i dont use webview xp. will have an look and see what it does on my machine

well i finally managed to install rp7 in virtual pc but i,ve never manage to install it on a real Pc even dupilating things .ived tried 10 times fresh install etc. the lame skin engine gotta be standalone because in order to get proper taskbar xp style u need user dlls and shell dlls too bad someone wouldnt merge the needed files into one lame skin exe inf included.on a bright note Rp7 works great no problems in vpc 2007 .nice piece of work tinhy thxz .

May 30 2007, 09:59 AM
well i have been doing some extra tests concerning how rp handles html and javascript/vbscript and im seeing errors outside webview related items.now it may be that im using FE and not SE but i cant really see the difference after the updates were installed and the webview issue is persistent.i would wager even SE user would experience the script errors after installing rp.outside a basic webview explorer has major issues when attempting to use any webview using javascript or vbscript.
i did go back to rp just to do some bug testing using home made webviews using simple javascript command menus etc just to see what happens..if this isnt to much of a clog on this forum i'll keep posting my findings.

Tihiy,
I was in the middle of Trying to Install RP7 when the program asked for the windows ME .cab files. I downloaded the cab file and in a new folder and put in the file path into the installation, the installation detected the cab files and proceeded to installation when a problem came up, for some reason, RP7 has a tough time extracting the CAB files. I tried reinstalling it from different path but for some reason it always has trouble extracting the archive. What should I do?
This is the error I get:

Any Help or Suggestions?
Thanks!
P.S. I can't wait for this thing to work so I could see the Lameskin, Good Work Tihiy You Rock!

Jun 3 2007, 02:18 PM
FoxHoundApparently, that's because you placed win_8.cab in folder like 'New Folder'. Because extract.exe does not support long name paths, it will fail.
You must place it in short-named folder like C:\Windows\Desktop.
Note: RP7 installer falls back to extract.exe only if it cannot use extrac32.exe. That means your system files are damaged.
