Has anyone made an MSI of any acronis utility?
RogueSpear
Dec 20 2005, 05:18 PM
Acronis' software does not have a "free" mode in the way that Winamp has. I sort of felt like I was pushing the envelope by making the WinRAR installer, but I rationalized it in thinking that so many people have indeed purchased this software and the registration process is so clear cut, that there would be a demand for it. Plus WinRAR is only downloadable in a "trial" form as far as I know, requiring the user to register it within a certain time. With Acronis, I don't think you can even run their software without a key.
Nothing is black and white and there are a lot of little nuances, but this line of thinking is why I haven't posted installers for AnyDVD, PowerDVD, and others.
EDIT: I'm sure some may have noticed that a new version of Messenger Plus! was released today (figures). I'm aware of it, and after reviewing the changelog, I'm not going to be posting a further update. The changes are minor at best and some of them are aimed at the new Messenger Live product, so they don't even apply to that installer directly anyway.

Thank you and 'odes' :)
-----------------------------
RogueSpear, thank you for sharing your knowledge and time. I admire your devotion which results in pristine shape switchless installers. By that I mean your extra effort that goes in removing the slack (i.e. non-english languages) and the "Start Menu" / "Program Files" work you do. That's what I've been doing 'manually' in a semi-automatic way for years now. Thank you in advance for answering my questions.
Questions
-------------
1. Might any of your installers have a problem with 'C:\Documents and Settings' being "e:\home"?
2. Can your switchless installers be 'nLitegrated'?
Question explanations
----------------------------
1. I have a strict policy of separating user data from binaries. Over years, this resulted in 'C:\Documents and Settings' becoming "e:\home". Not all switchless installers take this change into account. I've seen you wisely use variabes (i.e. %programfiles%), so I presume you've taken this into account, but I just wanted to make sure you do.
2. nLitegrated = integrated into a 'nLited' windows release as a hotfix. I use only .cab files so far and am uncertain about wether your .exe or .msi installers can be used the same way.

Update - 20051224
Added DVDFab Decrypter V2.9.6.5
Added DVD Shrink V3.2.0.15
Updated FreeUndelete to V2.0
@Fr1tz, InstallShield AdminStudio uses system variables whenever possible so there shouldn't be a problem with having your Documents and Settings defined as E:\Home. As far as nLite usage - all of the installers that work from svcpack.inf can made into "hotfix" cab files and used with nLite. I'm currently in the process of putting some together and you will be able to find them where my Addon Pack is posted. Just follow the link in my signature.

While I love these installers and I think they "roxor", I'm finding it hard to figure something out...
I'm doing an hfslip'd setup of a Win2000 Pro disc, trying to include QT Alternative. Until now all the SS installers have worked perfectly in the hfsvpk folder (for the svpack.inf i think or is it svcpack...). I see your installer is configured specifically to find the MPC in the folder as set up by your addon pack. While I looked through your addon pack and think most of it rocks, I've been through 5 pages of postings and see no immediate way of setting it up to work with this process.
I must admit I'm rather new and not very familiar with this, and I really haven't been able to experiment. Also, it seems like a number of these are XP specific, is this to mean that I cannot use this addon pack with 2000? I love the setup you've got going here and would love to work with some of these programs.
Thanks for the work you do!

Updated KeePass Password Safe to V1.04
Updated SpywareBlaster to V3.5.1
Repacked .NET V1.1 and V2.0 and Visual J# V1.1 and V2.0
The .NET Framework installs are back. If anyone downloaded the .NET V2.0 between January 01 and today, you will need to redownload. I accidentally omitted inserting a reboot suppression. The Visual J# V1.1 package I originally posted back in November was, to my surprise, not an AIP based install. I don't know what I was thinking when I did that, but now the install is based on an AIP and this cut the filesize of the installer in half.
Also it seems a bug must have been resolved with 7-Zip because I can now compress at the maximum setting without receiving an error, so this saved a little space on the .NET and J# installers.
I am now branding my installers. When you look at the comments meta data for the installer, it will read "A RogueSpear Repack". If you see this in a file, then there is a good chance I actually made it. Obviously someone could make their own installer and make the comments read whatever they like, so don't read into this as some form of checksum or authenticity verification, because it is not.
@JoeDorson, any time!

@Gedrean, my Addon Pack needs to be integrated into your Windows XP install source using either nLite or RyanVM's Integrator. The switchless silent installers and the .msi files, for those using group policy, that are in this thread were made on and tested on Windows XP SP2. Some of them may work with earlier versions of Windows, but I suspect some won't. The target audience are those who are installing Windows XP SP2.

Awww darn. Well, most of them seem to have worked (I tested them by installing through them into my own system before integrating to the hfslip for 2k. So, I guess I'll just have to repackage QTA and RA myself, including it to one integrated group and including only one Media Player Classic. Thanks anyhow!

@war59312, It sure should be enough. Holy crap, that's a lot of bandwidth. One of the reasons I have been using RapidShare is so I can kind of sort of keep track of how much traffic there is. Most of the installers don't really see that much traffic, SharpReader being a good example. Others like Microsoft AntiSpyware or MSN Messenger have seen over a hundred downloads in a 2 week period. If you want to send me a PM, we could work on some details.

Hi RogueSpear,
I just downloaded VMWareTools.7z v5.5 and start it isntallation.
I created a Directory "X:\XPCD_SP2\$OEM$\$1\
Install", extract there the
VMWareTools.vbs and
VMWareTools.exe files and finally,I configured my Winnt.sif as
CODE
[GuiRunOnce]
command0 = "%SystemDrive%\install\VMWareTools.vbs"
Then I start the install. After the Rebbot, I got the error (see image bellow)
CODE
Scrip: C:\Install\VMWareTools.vbs
Line: 32
Char: 64
Error: The system cannot find the file specified.
Code: 80070002
Source: (nul)
VMWareTools installation failed! Although, both files "VMWareTools.vbs" and "VMWareTools.exe" are in "
C:\install\ directory".
As my VBS knowledge is near to 0, let me know
What goes wrong???My second question is what utlity did you used to compress VMWareTools.exe.
In fact, I'm looking to set the VMware display to
1024x768.
I opened "VMwareTools.exe" archive file with winrar and found in the "program files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\video\winnt2k\32Bit\
vmx_svga.inf" file. The lines 87, 88 and 89 of it are the display setting
CODE
HKR, , DefaultSettings.XResolution, %REG_DWORD%, 640
HKR, , DefaultSettings.YResolution, %REG_DWORD%, 480
HKR, , DefaultSettings.BitsPerPel, %REG_DWORD%, 32
As "VMwareTools.exe" archive is locked, i can't modify it.
Or, it is possible to you to modify it for me???

The script that I included and the .exe installer itself both need to be placed in \OEM in your distro CD in order for the script to properly function. The main purpose of the script is to determine that the install is taking place within VMware vs. real physical hardware. You don't need the script to use the installer. I just included it for the sake of convenience.
As far as changing the screen resolution, I usually call NirCmd to do that. Whether you do it from a batch or in VBscript, it works fine. Here is the format:
CODE
nircmd.exe setdisplay 800 600 32
EDIT: As far as the compression goes, if I remember correctly, I used 7-Zip with that installer.

No dollar signs. What I mean is quite literally \OEM
NirCmd is not included in the download and the script that is included makes no effort to change the screen resolution. I was simply illustrating to you how I go about it. You can can change the screen resoluton wherever you like. If you want to add it to the script I included, that'll work, but it's not necessary.
I am aware that there are other utilities out there for changing the screen resolution, but NirCmd works quite well and it also does about a thousand other things. Why go with a one trick pony when you can have it all? The way I get NirCmd into my installation is through my addon pack (see my signature), but you could also just as easily stick it on you CD in \$OEM$\$1 or \$OEM$\$1\$$. Either would work just fine.

I'm not sure where you plan on running this batch from, but the .NET 2.0 cannot be executed during the GUI setup phase (svcpack.inf, cmdlines.txt). If you are running this batch file from RunOnceEx or GuiRunOnce then it should be fine.

Hi Rogue,
Sorry to insist, but as i wrote above, i have no vbs knowlege at all, and this is my last tolls to install in my UA DVD.
2 questions I have1) regarding the vbs file inside yr archive,
a) if i launch it from the CD, do i have to replace /OEM by any path folder like /software/vmtools/?
'b) if i launch it from the HD %systemdrive%\install\ , do i have to replace
CODE
If fs.FileExists(objDrive.DriveLetter & ":\WIN51") Then strOEM = objDrive.DriveLetter & ":\OEM"
by
CODE
Drive.DriveLetter & ":\WIN51") Then strOEM = objDrive.DriveLetter &
c) where in the end of .vbs file do i put nircmd setdisplay 1024 768
CODE
End If
Next
End Sub
InstallVMtools
I prefer using yr VMwareTools archive from the HD %systemdrive%\install\ because if you have more than one CD-ROM drive (which I do). Because the code you posted searches all drives, it will also search my second CD drive that I do not have CD in. At which time Windows will generate a dialog with a message stating that media is not ready in the drive. see this post
Batch Script Tips and Tricks for XPCDs and here DarkShadows solution
MakeMapCD.zip.
2) what msi installer do you use for the VMwareTools
5.5 silent install (there is no startx or Runnhiddenconsole inside the archive)??? regarding yr VMwareTools
5 you used startx.

@Jedi82, probably the best to go about what you want to do is to find out the registry settings and make a .reg file for import after Winamp has installed. I'm sure a lot of people do this already with their registration code to enable to Pro features, so it could just be tossed into the same file for import.
@coucou, I thought we went through most of this back around page 2 of this thread.. take a look at this
post from my guide to RIS for the proper usage of NirCmd in VBscript.
If you follow the instructions.. putting the installer in \OEM, it should run fine for you. I am not about to alter the script. It works fine for me and always has. If you want to put things in another directory you are going to have to do that on your own. I think when I update this installer I will not include any script at all and just let people implement it as they see fit.

I did make one a while back for the latest release of CD Burner XP Pro, but I'm unable to locate it now. I'll have to make it again I think. It looks as though CD Burner is on the really slow track for an upgrade. Too bad too, because I always liked the program. I lost the msi file for IrfanView, so I'll just rebuilt the project tonight and post it again. And as far as TrueCrypt goes, I just have not gotten that far down the line in transferring things over.
On another note. I now have new hosting, so there is likely to be some down time with the items that I currrently host. The interruption should be minimal.

Take care!

Right in post #1 of this thread.. I use InstallShield AdminStudio. There is Wise Package Studio, which I haven't tried it out in quite some time, but I really wasn't too impressed with it a couple of versions ago. Who knows, it may have improved a bit. Then there's a relatively newer product, ScriptLogic Installer Design Studio. Even though it's up to version 3, this is the first version that I am aware of. I gave it a try and found the interface to be incredibly convoluted and confusing. But that's only my opinion, other's may think it's great because it seems to be geared a little more towards people who are new to this topic. What I can't say is how good of a job it does because I never got that far with it.
For application repackaging, transform file creation, and direct .msi editing, AdminStudio is really at the top in my book. It's outrageously expensive. Nearly criminal in my mind. I was lucky enough to have my primary employer spring for it. Those who are not so fortunate will realistically need to seek out other solutions unless they're independantly wealthy or something.

ScriptLogic Installer Design Studio has started it's life as of version 3 but was acquired from masai solutions and used to be called
Masai Installer. The program did not get to version 3 overnight

. Just thought you would like to know.

Ok I was wondering how in the world that would have slipped by me

I usually keep up on what ScriptLogic puts out there even though I've never really been that fond of their products. I had never tried out Masai before.
EDIT: Considering it's price however, it gets major points from me. It may not be AdminStudio, but not too many can really afford that. And I fear with Macrovision having aquired InstallShield, only bad things will come of that product.

Update - 20060116
Added DAEMON Tools V4.03HE
In my second round of testing I noticed that the shortcut creation part of my installer for DT4 is flawed. If there does not already exist a folder named CD-R in the All Users Start Menu, then the shortcut will be missing. If you install A-Ray Scanner or any number of the DVD oriented installers I have posted, then the shortcut will be created just fine (since the CD-R folder is already there). If the shortcut is missing for you, the program will still run just fine.
I'll get an update posted at some point, but it's not high on priority list at the moment.
