Update - 20060307
Updated OpenOffice.org to V2.0.2
godan
just want to report a bug of sorts, after using the silent installer via RunOnceEx for Paint.NET if you right click on a picture file like a .jpg and choose "Open With -> Paint.NET v2.6" windows installer starts up and starts to ask for PaintNET.msi this also happens when you are in Paint.NET and try to use "File -> Acquire", it's really a pain. I do want to point out that this doesnt happen the very first time you right click and "Open With -> Paint.NET v2.6" only every time after that. I dont know if its a problem with Paint.NET itself or if its with your installer.

EDIT: I uninstalled the silent version and downloaded and installed the normal version from thier website and installed it normally with autoupdate off and desktop shortcut off and file associations on and everything works fine now so I do think it has something to do with the silent installer OR with installing from RunOnceEx but I dont know.
RogueSpear
I've only ever installed it from svcpack.inf and didn't notice that, but then again I can't say for certain that I've recreated your set of circumstances - open files multiple times via right click. I'll have to check into it further.
Dumpy Dooby
I had a problem with **** NFO viewer doing something like that. Windows Installer would pop up saying it needed the msi, but it already had the msi selected. So I just clicked next and it did its thing. But still ... it was annoying. These pesky msi files man ... they're a real pain the a**. sad.gif
RogueSpear
Usually it's not a problem with installers made from an administrative installation point. I have run into some notable problem children though. PowerArchiver for some reason always does this to me unless you run the app from the start menu first blink.gif I never did figure that one out and quite frankly I don't even care now as I use 7-Zip and WinRAR almost exclusively for archive files. Another one is Spybot - Search and Destroy. I've had a couple of complaints about the current posting. I'm guessing that if I pack it up with the browser helper disabled that the problem will go away.

What I've determined is that there are two things that for some strange reason will only sometimes cause these problems. Shell extensions and browser extensions. I wish I could nail it down with absolute certainty. For instance, I've never had this problem ever with 7-Zip or WinRAR, both of which use shell extensions.

I should start a new thread "Unattended Installation Mysteries" biggrin.gif
RogueSpear
It's official - my Paint.NET installer sucks. I'll work on it.
godan
I made a silent installer for Paint.NET that was pretty much just like yours BUT it works tongue.gif (just joking) and it's compressed with WinRAR its only for x86 and installs to %Systemdrive%\Program Files\Paint.NET and places one shortcut in "Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories" It's 3.41 mb's

EDIT: I posted it on rapidshare here is the link http://rapidshare.de/files/15371716/PaintDotNet.exe.html

@RogueSpear: Thanks for creating your VMWare Tools addon. Nobody else has been able to do so!

Any chance of you releasing an updated version that is more of a 'standard addon' than your 7z/vb/OEM version?

Update - 20060313
Added iTunes V6.0.4.2
Updated Real Alternative to V1.48
Updated QuickTime Alternative to V1.69
Updated VirtualDub to V1.6.14 Build 24415
Updated Winamp to V5.21

** ANNOUNCEMENT **

I am going to be discontinuing this thread soon. It's been fun and I'm glad that a LOT of you have gotten some use out of these installers, but this is starting to take up entirely too much of my time. It's cutting into my real life just a bit too much. It's also seriously hampered my efforts to get serious about programming. A good deal of these installers I have to maintain for work, clients, etc. But a lot of them I don't. Making the .cab addons and everything involved with keeping the thread up to date involves time that I simply don't have anymore.

I haven't decided when I'm going to wipe it all out, but it will probably be sooner rather than later. So get everything you want to get from here now, because I'm not going to be emailing out any special requests. Thanks to everyone who wrote with words of gratitude and thanks to those who gave me some pointers and pointed out flaws in my work. It all helps to make better installers.

What exactly are you basing that statement on? I've made installers using both and really fail to see any difference in their execution.

Well when you decompress the downloaded file you get a switchless silent installer and a VBscript. You can always delete the .vbs file if you like and just use the installer however you see fit. Perhaps I'm not quite understanding what you mean.
av8tor
I am sad to see this happen, but I can understand. I am still trying to figure out how your making them.

Thanks for all your time and hard work!!!!!!!!!!!

I posted a GUIDE here not that long ago. It could have been better, could have been more detailed, but again we have this time issue. It's funny though because I had no less than two dozen people send me PM's requesting such a guide. So I posted the guide and figured that something with that amount of room for error would surely generate tons of questions, suggestions, and so forth. But it completely bombed. I don't know if that's because people figured they could just wait for me or someone else to release something or if the guide truly sucked.

Hopefully we can get a few people on board to start making these things. Shark007 has made some nice installers which he keeps right up to date. Maybe godan newwink.gif has a flare for these too.. Now seeing that I did post a guide, if you can figure things out and work through problems, you should be able to make your own installers. If anybody runs into problems making one, just send me a PM. Don't send me a PM asking how to make one from scratch - that's what the guide is for biggrin.gif
Jedi82
Rogue i'm so sorry that you will not continue release this amazing silent installer, so serious, so impecable...sigh...

But now it's time to ask!!!!!:)smile.gifsmile.gif

What is the link to the cab addon? i don't understand why this file, what can i do with this?
RogueSpear
Just to let all of you know, QuickTime Alternative 1.69 sucks just as bad 1.68. It's also based on QuickTime 7.0.4. The older 1.67 still works just fine. The installer I made is fine, it's the actual release that is terrible.

@Jedi82, the .cab addon downloads are for use with either RyanVM's Integrator or nLite. The cab file actually contains the exact same switchless silent installer that is available as a download. The cab file just contains instructions so that RVM/nLite know to place the installer in the svcpack directory and make the appropriate entry in svcpack.inf.

Hello! I just wanna say I really love your addons!

To have all these great programs install nicely and orderly in set folders. I'm gonna miss that when different people make addons with other standards. I must always change them myself, and that is work enough for me. You have been my God and teacher. smile.gif
av8tor
A guide, great I must have missed it. Thanks!!! I have no formal training on computer programs. Everything I know I've learned from You, Ryan, Kel and all the great people in the forums. I guess I could take some classes, but my schedule won't allow it. I guess I continue to plink around.

Thanks again

@RogueSpear

I have a request.

Could you make a switchless uninstaller for SPTD please. I wish to add it to WPI for future proofing. Just in case I don't want it installed by default at a later date (T-12 install->WPI Uninstall).

Thanks

Did Anyone test Desktop Sidebar 1.05.111. I receive an error when i try to integrate the cab with NLite or RVMIntegrator.

Product: Desktop Sidebar 1.05.111 -- Error 1904. Module C:\Program Files\Utilities\Desktop Sidebar\basicpanels.dll failed to register. HRESULT - 2147010895. Contact your support personnel.

The Desktop Sidebar issue is something that was also brought to my attention over at RyanVM's forums. Personally, I am only able to duplicate the problem on a computer that has an nVidia video adapter blink.gif I don't quite get that. Just a little background for those interested: the Desktop Sidebar installer is not a repack like most of my installers. It's the original .msi file with plugins and skins injected into it. In due course of troubleshooting the issue I made an installer with the original .msi file and got the same error (on a laptop with an nVidia Go).

So it seems to work for some and not others. My suggestion is that if you want to be on the safe side, install it from RunOnceEx.

My installer for SPTD puts the genuine SPTD installer executable inside %SystemRoot% just for the purpose of uninstalling it. I forget what the command line argument is, but it's easy enough to get with a /? switch. So to answer your question, there really is no need for a switchless uninstaller.

Hi;
on my configuration, I've had to add 2 merge modules for Desktop Sidebar to install correctly.
The modified package can be found here: http://repository.windowsdream.com/Applica...1.05.111-EN.exe
(unzip with 7-zip if you want to get the MSI directly).

Like I said, I used the original .msi file. I wonder why the author didn't do this himself (especially since he's about to be a Microsoft developer).

Your installers install they way you made them.
For example daemontools , in the CDR folder

I like my apps to be installed in the default directory.
With winrar everyone can make his own installers much quicker , and default.

This makes you installers no longer nessesary , atleast for me.
Nice job you did dont get me wrong here, i realy admire your work.
But , with winrar enybody can do this with few clicks.....

Indeed, I often have applications install to somewhere other than default. I just don't see the need for a couple hundred individual directories inside of %programfiles%. More importantly, I often repackage applications in order to get the settings the way I want them. Whether it's for enhanced security or privacy, or to just get rid something annoying like ads.

The other benefit of course is file size. Whichever compression product gives me the smaller size is what I use for any given installer. I'm definately not loyal to one or the other, but if you can figure out how to make an installer with WinRAR, then you certainly shouldn't have a problem making one with 7-Zip. Yea it tends to go quicker making them with WinRAR. Sheer laziness and having no pride in your work is what would lead someone to never investigate all possibilities.

It's real easy to make 7-zip installers to. I think this command will come in handy to you because it doesn't seem like you know how to check 7-zip installers and that's what your basing your opinion on.

find /I "Runprogram=" *.exe

Run this in cmd to see install switches. *.exe path to 7-zip sfx.

Thanks for that, have added to WPI. biggrin.gif

Nice one RogueSpear smile.gif

I think your VB script for checking the Bios for VMware strings is faster than the wmic implementation that I was using whistling.gif

Well just for the record, in a batch script this one also works for me (after declaring %cdrom% somewhere):
CODE
FOR /F "tokens=1 delims=-" %%i IN ('%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem\wmic.exe BIOS GET SerialNumber ^| FINDSTR /c:"VMware"') DO (IF "%%i" == "VMware" start /wait %cdrom%\oem\VMwareTools.exe)

I made a silent ICQ Lite (v5.04) installation that:

1.) Removes & deletes the toolbar that is normally installed during an /S install

2.) Removes the ad banners in the program and message windows

3.) Deletes the extra unneeded shortcuts that are created on the desktop and on top of the start menu

4.) Deletes the default sounds. I did this because I hate the foghorn sound and "uh-oh" sounds. If you want the sounds, you can edit icq.bat in the archive, remove the line that deletes the sounds and then re-add the batch file to the archive.

I haven't seen a package like this on MSFN, so if someone already created one then ignore my post. For all 5 of you, including me, that still use ICQ here it is:

http://rapidshare.de/files/15924536/ICQ.exe.html

It could probably shrink another 1MB if it were made into a 7zip package, but I prefer WinRAR.

I guess I didn't realize how many people use these things. After so many requests, I've decided to keep most of the installers up. I am taking down some of them down however. Anything that is not free, could get me in hot water with the MPAA, requires a WGA check to download from Microsoft, or has a - generally speaking - creepy EULA, is no longer available.

QUOTE (RogueSpear @ Nov 9 2005, 09:45 AM) *
Well I included the script because what it does it check the BIOS strings for "VMware", to verify that your install is being done in a VM as opposed to a real computer. For testing purposes, to make sure this thing will work for you, why don't you just hard code calling the file from RunOnceEx, so you know it'll run. Also, I didn't mention this before (probably need to do an edit), but this version of VMware Tools is for the latest release version (V5). I don't know if it would work in earlier versions or the more recent beta releases (V5.5).

Hello RogueSpear,

Can i suggest an enhancement to the VMWareTools script (I have been using this and it works wonderfully - thanks for your hard work!) - The suggestion i have is that you run the script to check if VMWare is present, and if it is it installs the tools (just as it does now), however can there be an additional option that if it is not present you can then run the VMWare installer to install VMWare?

I personally would find this very useful. Not being a VB programmer i am not sure how to go about this...

Is there an iTunes installation available somewhere that is:

1) Compatible with Quicktime Alternative 1.67
2) Doesn't suffer the iTunes.msi problem given here: http://www.msfn.org/board/iTunes-msi-problem-t69296.html
3) Can be installed without Apple Quicktime...
4) Silently

I've searched for ages but can't find the definative answer!

Best thing I could suggest is to make a batch or script that deletes the shortcuts you don't want to keep.

After reading the forum I'm sorry to say it's a "beta" release. They have been making "silent" updates to it without changing the version number. Maybe it isn't a good idea to upgrade this addon yet.

Edit: Been running 5.8 since release and haven't found any problems.

@RogueSpear, Shark007 created Shockwave silent/switchless installer without Yahoo toolbar/browser popup. I edited the installer making it quiet (/qn instead of /qb). Muiz also created a flash installer.

The Shockwave installer & topic is the first post here
In my post you'll find the /qn version of this Shockwave silent installer.
Muiz created a Flash switchless installer for non-English users here.

I like the Shockwave installer A LOT, don't like ads/Yahoo! Toolbar.
