http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/Follow the instructions on Dr Hoiby's site to make a patched version.
Then just change the files after running gurg's SP.
BTW His WhoLockMe is a fantastic tool. I add it a a part of my regular build disk.

Check out the old thread - some cool guy already patched the version included in USP 5

I'll consider this for the USP 5.1 Extreme Edition.

After searching 50 pages from the previous thread, i found this:
"Okay, these are the changes you need to make, remembering to back up first, and that I'm not responsible if stuff breaks:
For 256-colour tray icons, change the following in explorer.exe (version 5.0.3900.6920, file size 242,448 bytes, located in main Windows directory):
at x618E, change 01 to 11
at x12235, change 01 to 11
at x12246, change 01 to 11
To disable WFP, change the following in sfc.dll (version 5.0.2195.6921, file size 94,456 bytes, located in system32 subdirectory to Windows directory):
at x6276, change 8B C6 to 90 90
All of these have changed since their respective previous versions, so please make sure that you have the right vesions and the like if you do try them."
Thanks again to the original author of this.

Hi,
is there a way to replace explorer.exe and keep WFP running?
Do i have to use modifyPE.exe ?
(Maybe it's possible to slipstream with HFSLIP into the cabinets or similar?)

A: i realy dont thinkt hfslip and uSP5 wil be happy to see eachother lol
B: yeah you should use modifype after hacking or changing files....
just create your cd.. and just before burning it to cdrom replace all files that you want to modify with modifype'd versions of the hacked files...

Thanks Gurgelmeyer,
I was not able to download and check the package yet.
btw, this may not be the right topic but is there a possibility to make localized versions?
(german,french..)

yes it is, - if you can supply ALL patches - /G has used,
problem is lots and lots of them arn't public - and mainstream support has ended, (so if you want them, buy them).
another option would be to - make a 'as mutch as you can get your hands on' version, its all up to you, (i know if tryed a dutch version, and maybe ill even retry (but chances are slim, and time isn't cheap)),
thats why ive chosen to rather just stick with the enlish version (and made a point to al the who ask me about it, (if you cant use windows 2k in enlish - use xp). its hash but very real (imho)

Hello,
And for those wondering how to replace explorer.exe on running system...
Well, the easy way is to use replacer:
http://www.www3.telus.net/_/replacer/You simply download and follow the instructions when you run it.
I find the easy way to enable 256 color tray icons is using:
http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/free...xvi32/xvi32.htm1.) Download and run.
2.) Then click file > open and open explorer.exe .
3.) Then you simply click Address > Goto from the tool bar.
4.) So go to the places that Gas_Hed explained above and change their values.
5.) Then you simply save it as explorer.exe to your desktop and use replacer from above.
It's really that simple.
I would just post the exe, but I don't want to get into any copyright issues.

Enjoy,
Will

VERY nice. Beats the pantaloons off WhoLockMe. Hallaylooyah - I am a convert.

Buggy in the since that it could not unlock a lot of files a lot of the times and would have to reboot first to remove. With unlocker that is not the case. Well only had to reboot once.

Ooh, look, I'm a thread necromancer!
Ok...I'm not sure why, but with 5.00.3700.6690 I get pretty 256 colour icons, and with 5.0.3900.6920 Gas_Hed's hex edits have absolutely no effect.
Any ideas?

Kramy,
I have Gurgelmeyers version (patched) it works, and it matches Gas_Heds edits. I suspect your hacked version is being replaced by
file protection. Use ResHAcker to change the ver number of the modded one to..6691 (and then run modifype on it). After you reboot check the ver number of the one in winnt. If it is still 6690 then that is why you do not have 256 color.

May 13 2006, 06:40 PM
Well, here's the thing - all explorer.exe's on my harddrive have the proper hex edits done, and all my windows partitions have SFC disabled, with hack and empty filelist.

Sending the exe to modifype with the -c arg corrupts the exe so it no longer does anything or is recognizable.

If you can figure it out, awesome, because I'm stumped. Oh, and I can freely flip my explorer.exe back and forth between 6690 and 6920 while within windows.

I used this utility to force tray icons use 256 colors
http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/win2000traypatch/(.NET Framework 2 required)
Although explorer.exe version is not in its database, it can scan the file and try to determine which bytes should be changed. Anyway, yesterday I applied this to my Windows 2000 SP5 Build 5.1.2195 and everything seems to function properly.
Just to be sure that the file is properly patched, I used this utility
http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color...lorTrayTest.zipP.S.
Umm, just used the 256ColorTrayTest and it seems that the SFC has restored original file. Oh, well, will have to remove it from DllCache.

Win2000TrayPatch - 32-bit color notification icons for Windows 2000
and
QUOTE
About
Windows 2000 is a fine OS, but unfortunately lacks support for 32-bit color tray icons. Instead, you end up with a 16 color version, which looks very bad when applications designed for XP are run on Windows 2000 and end up adding an icon that comes out as 3 colors.
Win2000TrayPatch is designed to fix this limitation by patching Explorer.exe to support full 32 bit color tray icons. The program uses a database of patch locations stored on this site to ensure it finds the correct patch location for maximum reliability and safety. Even if your Explorer version isn't listed in the database, you can still scan to try to find the location and patch it in a slightly less safe manner.

I got it, I guess
- Kramy wanted 256 color icons
- this patch offers true color icons

May 14 2006, 09:01 AM
I'd be surprised if that patch is really doing 32-bit tray icons anyhow; rather I suspect it's just doing what the hex edits do, i.e. 256-colour, given that it specifically talks about editing the explorer file and (afaik) there is no such available edit to obtain 32-bit icons that way.
But hey, feel free to prove me wrong.
Kramy
May 14 2006, 10:28 PM
Ahh, that patch did the trick. Awesome.
I'm guessing that by "32bit", they mean that it accepts any RGB from 0-255(not limitted to specific increments). Since systray icons
are only 16x16 though, they're really 256 colour. Monitor settings determine if they appear 32bit.
Hey, something I was just noticing - my makecabbed ex_ files are larger than those in USP. What version or method does Gurgel use to get them smaller? Simply recabbing files boosts their size ~5-10%. I have v5.00.2134.1 of makecab. Edit: Figured it out.
