I have a question if anyone can answer it.
Of the files/updates that you cannot "directly" download from Microsoft.
Is there anything wrong posting how to obtain those files/updates presuming know one else knows?
This applies for Win98 and WinME. Not sure about 95 but I imagine it would.
Thanks in advance.
MDGx
They should be all here:
http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm

So I don't know which specifically they would be but does your list include those that (I believe) currently can only up obtained through the Windows Update site and not the Windows Update Catalog or from the corporate downloads page?

To be clear if I applied all the ME updates from your site then upon browseing to the Window Update site to your knowledge it would display that I have no updates (unless they have a newer driver than I have of course)?
Also this is to include more than the Critical Updates and Service Packs but also the Recommended Updates?
Thanks in advance and also for the quick response. biggrin.gif
MDGx
My pages should have all updates I am aware of, for all M$ OSes: DOS 6/7/8, Windows 3.1, WfWG 3.1x, Windows 95, 95a OSR1, 95B/95C OSR 2.x, 98, 98 SP1, 98 SE, ME, NT4, 2000, XP + 2003.
That includes those from WU [Windows Update], those from M$ servers [not necessarily available on WU], those issued by M$ but not available on M$ servers [so-called "hotfixes"], and also unofficial ones, made by concerned users from M$ files that were intended for other Oses or from modified older versions/builds, but which were tested to make sure they work OK with 9x/ME/NT4/etc.
Every update/patch/fix/(hot)fix/etc specifies the OS(es) it is/are meant to install on, usually enumerates all files that would be installed, most of the time their versions/builds, and most of the time what bug(s) is/are fixed by installing respective update(s).
All updates have links to their original developer web pages, like MSKB articles or MS0X-0XX Security Bulletins.
If any special steps are needed to install a particular update, you will find them detailed step-by-step, usually in bold characters.
And if you hold your mouse cursor over the "Direct Download" or file name link, you will see the exact location of the file , and the file name + extension.
That is if you are using MS IE 4/5/6, and have disabled the "Show friendly URLs" box in MS IE Properties -> Advanced tab. newwink.gif

PS: I'm adding the esdi_506.pdr fix. Let me know if you don't want it in (@all)

add it. I'll add the 98fe version of the 48bit LBA esdi_506.pdr fix onto the next beta of 98fe SP.

Hey guys.

The next version of the SP is almost ready. As well as the changelogs I posted recently (look at the last one), I am planning on including WMP 6.4. However, I know that a lot of files have been updated to the 7.x line, and others are just newer than what I could download.

The following list is what files are being included, compared to what is on the ME cd. All of these files are from the MPLAYER2 cab in IE6 SP1, except msdxm.ocx, which is from 832353.

-File name- -Version in SP- -Version on CD-
asfsipc.dll 1.0.0.3858 1.0.0.3857
drmstor.dll 4.1.0.3858 4.1.0.3857
dxmasf.dll 6.4.7.1121 6.4.7.1112
mplayer2.exe 6.4.7.1121 6.4.7.1112
msdxm.ocx 6.4.7.1129 6.4.7.1112
msdxmlc.dll 6.4.7.1121 6.4.7.1112
npwmsdrm.dll 4.1.0.3858 4.1.0.3857
strmdll.dll 4.1.0.3925 4.1.0.3857

If anyone has a newer version of any of these files, please let me know. DO NOT POST FILES THAT START WITH 6.4.9 AS THEY DON'T WORK ON ANY PRE-2000 (ME included) OS. If this is wrong, tell me, and show it working.

Also, I am going away this afternoon and returning on Tuesday, so don't expect a new version before Wednesday. I might have some time on Tuesday night, but I honestly doubt it.

the_guy

EDIT: I should also point out that I could NOT get 899282 from Microsoft. If anyone has the file, could they please send it to me so I can include it in the SP.
bristols
I have:

asfsipc.dll 1.1.00.3917
npwmsdrm.dll 4.1.00.3917

but I'm not sure at this point about where they came from.

Let me know if you would like them.

perhaps there was a problem with kb899282 that we dont know about that MS only knows and MS pulled it off their hotfix server

so is beta 6 ready yet?

Hey guys:

I just requested KB830460, which I will be including in the next version. It updates msvcirt.dll to version 6.1.9845.0. Other than that, the next version of the SP is ready.

Sent! I've also obtained 838751, which includes msvcrt.dll 6.1.9847.0. It's also sent your way MDGx. Maybe include those 2 files in 98SE2ME? They only have dependencies in kernel32.dll (when used together).

New release sometime today!

Hey guys,

Thought I'd give you all a nice little gift,

A fully working version! Yes, this means beta 6 is now available for download. I installed it on a fresh install and it works perfect. Link is temporarily here until MDGx uploads it to his server. I hope it works perfectly fine for everyone. If not, let me know.

-Added new unofficial 918547 (gdi.exe + gdi32.dll) replaces 912919. Still unsure about leaving the 918547 files from MS (updated by an anonymous person).

For those wondering about where 832414 is, I removed it as it would require msxml 3 installed for WU to work.

dump the kb918547.exe and q918547.dll files. I've removed them from beta 4 of the 98fe SP2 which will be posted tomorrow morning.

also modify your mesp202en.SED file and edit the TargetWin9xVersion and the TargetNTVersion sections of the SED file to have the following:

TargetWin9xVersion=4.90.3000:%OSWarn%:0K
TargetNTVersion=0:%OSWarn%:0K

Then in the [Strings] section put this line:
OSWarn=This Service Pack is for Windows Millennium Edition only.

Starting from beta 3 of the unofficial 98FE SP2, when running the 98FE SP2 under other versions of Windows than Win98fe, a warning message will say "This Service Pack is for Windows 98 Standard Edition only." instead of the default message "The 'Unofficial Windows98 SP2' package is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running."
erpdude8
also can you include versions 5.6.0.8827 of the cscript.exe, scrobj.dll, wscript.exe, wshext.dll and wshom.ocx files? these files are from Win2003 SP1.
the_guy
@erpdude: Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking about doing that. I might even update vbscript.dll and jscript.dll to version 5.6.0.8833, included with IE7 Beta 2.

Also, does anyone know why dispex.dll version 5.6.0.8825 does not work on any 9x OS's?

Dispex.dll versions 5.6.0.8515, 5.6.0.8825 and higher BREAK IE 5.5/6.0's Print and Print Preview functions under Win9xME. If you run IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6.0 SP1 under Win9xME, and have Dispex.dll 5.6.0.8825 and you try to use the Print or Print Preview function of Internet Explorer, IE will display a "script error" message and the Print/Print Preview features of IE no longer work correctly. That's why we should stick with version 5.6.0.6626 of the dispex.dll file.

Microsoft did the right thing on not updating the dispex.dll file to higher versions when they released WSH 5.6 build 8825 for Win98/ME/NT4. Just like not updating the oleaut32.dll file. Oleaut32.dll versions 2.40.4526 & higher dont work correctly under Win9x/ME/NT4.
the_guy
Ok. What do you think about jscript.dll and vbscript.dll from IE7 beta 3?

the_guy
Petr
BTW, Microsoft just (11-Aug-2006) released Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows NT 4.0 - but just jscript.dll was updated to 5.6.0.8831.

Petr
the_guy
Microsoft also did that for Windows Server 2003 SP0 on the same day. They also did that for 2000/XP back in June.

I think jscript.dll and vbscript.dll will be upgraded to 5.6.0.8833 in the next version unless someone else has a reason not to.

are the other WSH 5.6 files like cscript.exe, wscript.exe and wshom.ocx included in IE7 beta 3?

No they are not. They are included with Vista beta 2 though, but I don't think that I should use those files.

The_guy, a curiosity, is it necessary installation of ie6 sp1 such as 98 SP?

I've prepared service pack for win me beta 6 in italian! thumbup.gif
Now I'm testing with my italian friends.

IE6 SP1 is NOT NECESSARY in this SP. Gape just recommends IE6SP1 i believe.

Thanks Max_04. As soon as I see a link, I'll add it to the main post.

@ the_guy: when I create exe, for example with iexpress, is it possible to put an alert message such as
"this windows me package is not compatible with the version of windows you are running"?

Thanks, also for link in the first post.
the_guy
No problem.

This is what you put right above the strings line:
CODE
TargetWin9xVersion=4.90.3000:%OSWarn%:OK
TargetNTVersion=0:%OSWarn%:OK

And under the [Strings] line:
CODE
OSWarn=This Service Pack is for Windows Millennium Edition only.

So, when your done, it should be:
CODE
TargetWin9xVersion=4.90.3000:%OSWarn%:OK
TargetNTVersion=0:%OSWarn%:OK
[Strings]
OSWarn=This Service Pack is for Windows Millennium Edition only.

You might want to translate the bottom line.

also another thing to do is to put the TWEAKUI.CNT, TWEAKUI.CPL & TWEAKUI.HLP files inside SUPP.CAB file in the ME service pack. that's what I did with the 98fe SP. saves some space. You will have to put the "LayoutFile = slayout2.inf" line under the [Version] section of the TWEAKUI.INF file and remove the [SourceDisksFiles] section. Now the ME SP will install the TweakUI files from SUPP.CAB file.
the_guy
Done! I'm also moving the qfecheck files to supp.cab.

TWEAKUI.HLP=1
TWEAKUI.CNT=1

QFECheck.hlp=55
the_guy
@Max_04: You do not modify slayout2.inf. When you use makecab, it should create the slayout files for you. In the coming days, I will be posting the bat file I use to make the cab files, and the sed file to make the SP. This should make it easier for translators.

I personally have no idea why that's there. This SP is based off Gape's SP for 98SE, and it was in his SED file as well.
