[...]The bottom line is VIP.386 4.10.0.2228 makes my surfing experience smoother, with less resource drain than v. 2227, whereas NDIS.VXD 4.10.0.2226 seems to facilitate the occurrence of "Internet Explorer will be closed" type errors, so I downgraded to v. 2225 back again. Yet, when I have more time I'll give it a more thorough testing. For the moment, however, I'll keep just vip.386 v. 2228 in my system.

welcome.gif Good news! I've been testing NDIS.VXD 4.10.0.2226 in my system again for 3 weeks, now, without any problems. I've been unable to reproduce the original issue I reported before, not having had any instance of "Internet Explorer will be closed" type errors in these three weeks, so I'm sure that what happened on my first test must have been due to some internet quirk outside my system that has been resolved already. I'm now convinced NDIS.VXD 4.10.0.2226 works OK.

I recently installed Virtual PC 5.1 on my 98SE testbox. Last night I was building a 98FE guest system. When it finished installing drivers and restarted in normal mode for the first time, my host system, 98SE, suffered a BSOD with the following:
0028:C1849D04 in VXD PPPMAC(04) 0000C874

PPPMAC.VXD is version 4.10.2223, installed by the unofficial service pack sesp30a1-en. The present alpha 2 version uses the same file. Version 4.10.2223 of PPPMAC.VXD appears to the break shared networking on Virtual PC 5.1. When I replaced PPPMAC.VXD with an original copy , it fixed the problem and shared networking works normally.

I don't know if this issue can be duplicated on another PC, if it's specific to mine, or if this is even useful to you. Other than this issue, the unofficial 98SE service pack works great on my PC.

Hi herbalist,
What version was your original working PPPMAC.VXD?
I too use Virtual PC 5.1 with Windows 98SE Host OS.
I last had shared networking working around the middle of last year.
Sometime since then it's been broken although I really cannot remember exactly when...
May this year I was using version 4.10.0.2222 which did not work either...
It was then I installed MDGx's 98SE2ME package.
I'm now using PPPMAC.VXD from Windows Me (installed by 98SE2ME) version 4.90.0.3000 and it still does not work with Virtual PC 5.1.
I'm keen to find out what version you are using that works.

I'v got the same 'IDE in "DOS compatible mode"' problem as after installing Unofficial Service Pack 2.1a.
These files shouldn't be replaced (at least on my PC):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\IOS.VXD

Also, All: there is newer msvbvm60.dll (6.0.97.98, kb930828) available, for example here. There is newer kb934602, but is is not available yet [i've tried to request it].

Forget it, Tihiy. KB934602 is another hotfix that has been "shortlived" and is no longer available from MS support anymore. I've tried requesting KB934602 myself a few weeks ago and MS doesn't have it anymore as what I've been told. Consider using KB930828 which should be mentioned at MDGx's web site.

RetroOS,
I'm using version 4.10.2222, extracted from driver14.cab. I haven't installed 98SE2ME, only the 98SE 3.0 alpha 1 and 2 service packs. Most likely, there's major differences between your system and mine. Earlier in its building, I used IEradicator to strip out Internet Explorer. Had to install IE6 in order to get VirtualPC to work at all.
I need to go back to an earlier setup and check things more closely too. I'm finding things broken as well and I don't know exactly when they broke. My CD burning software (BurnAtOnce) doesn't recognize any of the CD drives.

herbalist,
My previous pppmac.vxd file, although it was 4.10.2222, was from Dial-Up Networking 1.4 from MS.
This version and the one from the cabs have the same version number and almost the same size.
DUN14 version is dated five months newer.
I've had this version for some years...
So... My problem does not appear to be pppmac.vxd then...
I've had very little broken software with the unofficial packs installed.
(One problem is Adobe Reader ActiveX crashing when loading a pdf in IE - had to turn off imbedded pdf...)
I really cannot recall if I had any of the packs installed when Virtual PC networking broke...
Oh well, I'll just have to build another box and test installing each pack until it breaks...

If I attempt to install 98SE SP3 with additional options, I get an error telling me there's not enough memory. I have a GIG of DDR400 SDRAM. I shut down everthing I can, even the systray and I still get that. Only if I disable all additional options and install the base SP3 only can I install. Do you have the system tweaks and other options in a separate package for install?

I know it would be better to use Standby but I just wonder why it was possible on my Windows ME that was installed on the same pc like Windows 98.

I have tested this patch and LLXXs 48-bit LBA patch, now on a few machines and I am happy to see it added.

I think LLXX's patch should be added, then basically it means Win98SE USP does it all!

NO, winxpi! I've said this before in old threads concerning hibernation and 98se; You will NEVER get the Hibernation option on your 98se machine UNLESS you are using a LAPTOP computer and the laptop maker has turned on the hibernation feature!!! Hibernation was NOT an OS feature until Win2000, ME, XP and Vista OSes came out and using the ME power management drivers under 98se could put a Win98 SE out of commission for good or make things worse.

FORGET IT AND MOVE ON! Many Win98se users don't have a use for the hibernation feature anyway and don't really need it. If you have a real urgent need for the hibernation power management feature, upgrade your operating system to at least Win2000.

I like the idea of optional installations.
Especially because I know that when used in some corporate and government environments, only Official Updates are allowed to be installed.

1. [ / ] Official Microsoft Updates
2. [ ] Unofficial Microsoft Updates (optional)
3. [ ] 3rd Party Updates (optional)

You can check the appropriate box if you want the Unofficial and 3rd party updates installed.

I just did a fresh install of win 98se. Then I installed IE6. I used the old W9x Power Patch to install the IE 6 SP1 update patch. I then installed sesp 30a3 -en.
The machine rebooted and oddly enough, there was not one pop up asking me anything!
I then used Norton Win Doc to check for problems; it found 61 problems and fixed them.
Everything seems to work quite well.
Now do I need to install the unofficial IE6 update?
Seems to be another great manifestation of your dedication to 98se Gape! Thanks! Thanks! and more Thanks--!!!!

Does anyone here who's got a german Win98 plan on creating a translated version of the new Service Pack?

I'd even make a localized version myself, if somebody would just tell me how to do that. Is it just a few files that have to be changed or do I have to really dig in and spend hours to change all of the stuff and translate the whole thing?

to prevent the file version popups, put either ",,,1056" or ",,,32" after certain files listed in the SPUPDATE.INF file.
Example > "hh.exe" should be "hh.exe,,,1056" or "hh.exe,,,32"

New OLE Automation security updates:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms08-008.mspx
Please include OLEAUT32.DLL version 2.40.4520 dated 12/21/2007 in the next release of the 98se SP. Version 2.40.4522 dated 6/19/2003 in the SP does NOT resolve the latest security flaws mentioned in MS security bulletin MS08-008. And version 2.40.4532.0 of the OLEAUT32.DLL file from the Win2000 KB943055 security update does not work correctly under Win95/98/98se/ME/NT4.

Also be sure to update the ASYCFILT.DLL, OLEPRO32.DLL & STDOLE2.TLB files to version 2.40.4530 listed in MS article 917423. Get MDGx's unofficial OLE Automation patch to obtain these files.

Not a big deal, PROBLEMCHYLD. The dsound.dll file gets updated if DirectX 6.1 (bundled with Win98se) or DirectX 7 is installed. Including a DX9 release of dsound.dll in the SP may wreck a Win98se machine that does not have DX9 installed. So don't worry about it.

Please, write ANY comment (If it even works properly, write it).

I'm setting up a 98SE test box made with 98lite preview to remove Internet Explorer and Windows Update. Upgraded USB, added drivers for network card and external hardware. Windows Installer 2.0.2600.2 and vcredist 4.71.1015.0 were installed next, then my security apps (SSM free, Kerio 2, Proxomitron), SeaMonkey, Java, Xsetup, and basic tools.

Installed the SE SP 3.0 alpha 3 to this package. No problems with the install. So far, everything works properly. Performance is good considering the hardware specs. I haven't finished installing what I need yet and haven't checked what else needs updating, but so far, so good. Seems to work well on units without Internet Explorer installed.
