Since I've installed some updates before this pack, there were some newer files recommended to be kept; they are dispex.dll, jscript.dll, scrobj.dll, scrrun.dll, vbscript.dll, wshext.dll, and wshom.ocx. Hopefully I typed them correctly! I don't know why this pack is not on the list of Add/Remove. And I also have to reinstall KernelEx033b so that the Calculator works proper again. That's all. No more serious problems to tell now.

Many Thanks, for the link to your download location for 98se Beta 2.
I have, unfortunately, never had any success whatsoever trying to download anything from Rapidshare.
Gape's packages have always been excellent stuff and trouble free, at least for me, so I

Kernel32.dll 4.10.2226 is the copy2gb fix, this bug is already addressed in the shell32.dll fix, but I have tested it and find it dosen't cause any conflicts, so there is no harm in adding this fix. I am, however against adding NUSB because MD updates his pack more often then gape does, so this will become something that I will have to manually remove, then re-install. Also, MSFN is beginning to crack down on EULA's so I don't like the idea of including legally questionable windows ME files. I really don't want Gape's pack to become a bloated monster, so IMHO he should stick to OS updates only. WIA is a format that is not widely used, what limits most scanners working in 9x is lack of driver support, not WIA support.

Strange as it is - I reinstalled to correct a corruption on my drive earlier today and found out a small issue (again) cropped up.
I didn't seemingly have it untill I installed SP3b2 and then KernelEx. AFter installing both, use of a command prompt will cause the dos box to cause a fault at random intervals (could be within 10 seconds or within 5 mins). If it happens during say , a ping or ipconfig; it causes the whole windows session to lockup.
So, anyone else notice this or am I just losing it? I get the same thing on my desktop from one of the earlier 3.0 beta's as well. I never mentioned it before because at the time I wasn't sure what was roughly causing it.

Maybe, this is root of problems with using Kex0.3.3a and above for my older 2 systems 64mb/128mb Ram-when I installed newer Sesp3.xxx series.....Update's <
Always Sesp2.1a is Stable even with Kex0.3.4..newest version....!!!> Noticed something "WIERD"to do with opening programs after a couple of days running *Ram Usage Size and Progam use with the Sesp3.xxx and above with Kex0.3.3a -0.3.4.*Some update either backdates or changes some value in AutoPatcher too!Stated these same "98SE Crash Performance Reactions" when using MDCU2.5 a few months prior.and
was tring new Sesp3.xxx and above ..
So,maybe it was not MDCU2.5 and RP7 colliding updates and functions therein ,but Sesp3.xxx....could be the culprit ????? *Now using Kex0.3.4 ,Uberkin ,RP8 ,update filesfor 98SE, 98SEregedit<New!>,Sesp2.1a and all other recent updaters up to today on all my 98SE systems-NO CRASHES!!!!!{*also Shockwave11 and Flash10 }Trying to use Nero7,just bad cdrom as it fights install on 98SE.All other xp/2k programs work though....even installed some Win2000/AdvSvr programs as have on another system and tried for fun of it they ran fully functional "Surprisingly Enough!!!"Sesp3 is in BetaStage , yet still needs work before becoming a RC release as too many problems with older systems using 98SE.

I agree that some if not most of these updates should be applied to Gape's pack. However there is one I am nervous about due to some users having problems with it. The patched IO.sys caused one users drive letters to become messed up. I think this patch needs further testing. It worked OK for me, but I have a very standard configuration. I.E. my hard drive is C:, Floppy is A: etc. On more unusual systems this might cause problems. X360C.exe is a device driver, and that is not something that we should really get into because it would set a precedent that we should add more device drivers and then we end up with a huge SP that would span a couple of CDs.I think for users who want the kitchen sink approach, the autopatcher fills this need. I think Gape's pack should be for people who use 98 Lite, or don't use IE, or updates IE manually.

Hi,
i've installed the new "98SE SP3.0 Beta3" (in french translation)
on my Win 98SE + IE6 SP1 (+ WMP9),
and it brought me 2 bugs:
1°) the window of the search function (= F3) is blank: the top is normal, I can write the word I'm searching for,
but the bottom were the results are supposed to appear, stays blank.
This issue is corrected if I install after the patched "Shell98 v.4.72.3812.634"
2°) my browser cannot read anymore the Wmv videos embedded in a webpage.
For instance, here:
http://jt.france2.fr/13h/,
I see the player but don't read anything.
Thanks, if you can help.
Regards.
CharlesF
Edit:
1°) for the "SHELL" problem, same thing with "Win98SE SP3.0 Beta2",
but the SP2 is working fine.
2°) for the "Wmv videos embedded" problem, I had tried SP2, SP3B2 & SP3B3 with the same result!
(between each try, I restore the initial state using Drive Image).
I had tried also to reinstall WMP 9 on the top with the MPSetup.exe file, and then the Codec Installation Package for WMP9 (of MS), but it didn't help at all !!
I don't understand...

Thanks Gape.
This is coming together.
I installed the MAIN updates only here.
This system is an old installation.
PPPMAC.VXD is still an issue on systems with
netbios networking.
I got a 'windows file protection error' on reboot.
Replacing pppmac.vxd got past that.
There's a new ROOTSUPD version available.
I had version 17,0,2195,0 and the sesp
replaced it with version 16,0,2195,0.
Those apparently will overwrite an older version.
I did not know that.
Along the same lines.. deleting the CryptoSignMenu key
probably works fine in spupdate.inf but it is added
right back in by some subsequent action.
This didn't show up in a regshot at all. So it
must be added back in during 1 of the RunPost sections
and before the install completes (and before a reboot).
Dunno.
Other than that.
I replaced the windows only version of EXTRACT.EXE
provided in the service pack
with 1 that works on my Emergency Boot Disks.
That is my personal preference.
Thanks again.
Your time and work are much appreciated.

Can you remove IE6 files because some of us don't use IE6

IMO, what is optional shouldn't be removed but maybe not selected by default.
IE files should be there bycause of the strong interconnection between IE and Windows, but it can be a good idea to make them optional too.
We are all looking forward for seeing you back for good, for good Gape!

Trying to figure out the exact cause but installing any form of the USP (2.0a, 3.0b2/3) causes GameGuard/theMida to fail when loading the online game 'mabinogi'. Installing kernelex or rp causes no issues, it's only on the installation of the uSP that causes it (even as the first install on a fresh install of 98). it only happens with the installation of the Main Updates.
Trying to go through some of the files and narrow down what it could be but I haven't any idea where exactly to start other than working file by file individually.
edit: Updating kernel32.dll from 4.10.2222 causes the following error with mabinogi gameguard/theMida:
QUOTE
Themida
An internal exception occurred (Address: 0xc8f9d4)
Please, contact support@oreans.com. Thank you!
Restoring kernel32.dll to 4.10.2222 resolves this issue. Could be either a block on version number or an incompatibility with its gameguard w/ kernel32.dll v4.10.2225 . I doubt it being a checksum check as its gameguard/themida has nothing against kernelex being installed....
Another issue with gameguard/theMidas was resolved and linked to the following thread for completeness:

@Gape
I have my windows 98 SE + rev pack 7.11 by Tihiy's, is it safe to use your updates/patch without uninstalling revpack?

@Gape
New GDIPLUS.DLL MS08-052 KB938464 security updates have been released. I have version 5.1.3102.5581 of the GDIPLUS.DLL file which should work with Win98se. Let me know if you need it in the next beta or RC release of the 98se service pack.
The old GDI+ redistributable download is no longer available and Microsoft has posted a new GDI+ redist package which requires Win2000 or higher to view its contents and/or extract its files.

Great work as usual on B3, but I think there are a few more patches that could be added.
After running SP3B3 on a fresh W98SE + IE6 install. windowsupdate came up with the following list of missing patches:
- Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB918439)
- Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB916281)
- Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)
- Security Update for Flash Player (KB913433)
I know some people will argue that IE6 and OE6 is not part of 98SE, but I think they should be included in the SP, maybe selectable by a checkbox for those who don't want it.
Thanx,

You already answer your own question! For IE6 updates I recommend Maximus-Decim's MDIE6CU 2.3

I didn't know there's a package for IE6 -- that should take care of the IE patches. I did check the stickies, and didn't see anything in the subject lines.

Is there SP 3 (or any) available for Finnish 98 SE?
Thanks.

That must be digged in somewhere in the MDGx's thread: "95 + 98 + ME updates..."

I've tried every conceavable and unbios-ed and bios-ed way to use SESP3.0B3;
B U T it does not work on 9 different 98Se Fully updated MoBo's with 9 different cpu's,memram, powersupply and type of Motherboard ...especially IF i add new mdiecu23e and mdcu305 and a backdoor shows up in CAYahoo spysweeper and removes it then MoBo and 98SE goes totally ""WHACK-O""and no start up or nuthin' runs right???***
But with-out using SESP3.0B3 and "Prefer to use SESP2.1a Anyways!=All system installs are totally functional with Kex 0.3.2a-0.3.5e help or not.(hmmmmmm?...no files to show as MoBo's will not function in dos nor windows?-Until Erase Disk then Full install without SESP3.0.b..3)

thanks

HTHs Gape I use a 400 mhz laptop pentium 2 and when I first installed win 98se it was really slow.
When realised that the cpu could not be oc'd, since its a pain-in-the-arse with an intel 440 chipset i figured i was
outta luck!

But when I came upon MSFN.....ahem...I mean, this is...AWESOME!!! hehe
If theres a feature you should add is, system restore a-la win xp!! Hell yeah!!

I defenalty think windows 98se
users would want this but It would have to support a small footprint just to be on the safe side. What do you think Gape?
Is it possible?

Window ME has SystemRestore and it even works exactly ( after the one and only critical update for that date bug )
like in xp
. So I don't see the point in porting such a feature to 98.
ME in my opinion is the sweeter 9x system, think you have systemrestore, moviemaker and media goodies, better usb and wdm driver support plus the networking stack of win2000 and what not. The OS role is the same as xp home edition, e.g. mediatainment OS
I don't understand all the people that say how unstable me was/is, because i have never experienced that and I used it years long.
ME needs more "modern" hardware and best sounddevices(including modem) with wdm drivers available, if bios is ACPI compliant even better ( sleep/resume/standby works perfect especially for laptops if you set me up with acpi forced ).
In general i tend to say a pc which is theoretically xp-capable ( PII 300/366/400 , 128 -256 Ram, ACPI ) would be the perfect ME candidate and run pretty fast - while it would struggle slow with xp on it.
