hi all

I know I have reported this before but as its still not been sorted out I'm so reporting it again kb 891711 is still locking up my computer on restart after install of the service pack

I don't know is anyone else is having this problem but its extremely annoying and I would request that it either be removed or have an option so that id doesn't get installed because quite clearly this patch hasn't been sufficiently fixed so that it works for everyone despite what Microsoft say

sesp21a-en.exe does not contain KB891711 fix from Microsoft but unofficial fix.

How to check what you have installed:

Official Microsoft KB891711 fix version 1:
Kb891711.exe 4.10.2222
Q891711.dll 4.10.2222
This fix is known to cause problems an was replaced by version 2

Official Microsoft KB891711 fix version 2:
Kb891711.exe 4.10.2223
Q891711.dll 4.10.2222

Unofficial KB891711 fix contained in sesp21a-en (older version)
Kb891711.exe 4.10.2224 MD5: 611bb94c570d601894d96ca309acc08a SFV32: A9A69FB6
Q891711.dll 4.10.2223 MD5: f744fde2011add7978a840f73fa8348b SFV32: 86BC013D
KB891711.EXE 4.10.2224 appeared to be causing some performance degradation on
an older PC using Windows 98 SE.
Therefore KB891711.EXE was updated to use fixed GlobalMemory instead of movable GlobalMemory. This appears to improve things.

Unofficial KB891711 fix - newer version
Kb891711.exe 4.10.2224 MD5: a47a1095cb568a93437228fc7adace91 SFV32: 4C843312
Q891711.dll 4.10.2223 MD5: f744fde2011add7978a840f73fa8348b SFV32: 86BC013D
(Kb891711.exe has the same version number but different content)

sesp21 contains uninstall option for KB891711 fix in Add/Remove programs.

Please try to identify which version is causing your problems and which not.

<this one was known to cause problems on some W98/ME machines>

MS kb891711 for Win98/ME [version 2] had
Kb891711.exe ver. 4.10.2223 dated 3/23/2005
Q891711.dll ver. 4.10.2222 dated 3/18/2005
<this one resolved many of the problems caused by the previous release>

Unofficial KB891711 had

Gape should include newer unofficial KB891711 fix in the 98se SP that was modified on 1-5-2006.

sesp21 contains uninstall option for KB891711 fix in Add/Remove programs.

I know but I shouldn't have to keep logging in to safe mode to remove faulty components after sp update I should just be able to opt out of installing it in the first place

and while I'm on the subject of Add/Remove programs the uninstall link for KB891711 that the Service Pack places in the add and remove is faulty to the only way I found to uninstall this was to open the KB891711 folder and right click on the .inf file and click the uninstall option

and while I'm on the subject of faulty uninstall links in the add and remove panel did the faulty uninstall link for tweak ui that I reported some time ago ever get fixed ?

You are probably refering to the older U891711 patch files, that were included with Gape's SP2 2.1a.
Please try the new ones:
http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=58780

Gape knows about the new versions, and will probably include the new ones in the next SP2 release.

Please post your comments/feedback about U891711 patch in this forum:

Hope this helps.

Also, see this forum about the newly revised U891711 patch that now has KB891711.exe version 4.10.2225 instead of 4.10.2224:

nah dont bother. it's now safe to use U891711 (instead of MS's KB891711) as it did not cause any problems on any of my Win98/ME machines.

Check out MDGx's site for BOTH official and unofficial 891711 updates for win98 & winme-
