I have a woman that I support that refuses to move forward with the times.

She (an older woman) has problems connecting to the Internet. She can't do a clean shutdown. Her Operating system (Win 95) comes back with a host of errors. I decided that it would be a lot easier for me to do an OS rebuild (Win95) and install an updated copy of IE. She is attempting to use version 3 of IE! (Some body kill me!) I guess installing version IE 5.5 SP2 would be the way to go. Is that correct? I am sure that there are several other things I should look out for. It has been forever since I touched Win95.

The OS rebuild went well. I can connect to the Internet but there are problems when I disconnect. I heard about a winsock update that should be applied to Windows 95 but I can't find it.

Can you point me to any updates, downloads that I should apply to Win95? Please let me know.

(btw have you tried windows update inside IE yet, i think i got it to work once on my moms PC under 95 long after it was supposed to be 'dead')

I insist on Win98SE here, especially since you can apply the uSP2 which gives you recent bug fixes. This is a classic example of when you need to help somebody even when they don't think they need such help.

Win95 is totally abandoned, at least Win98 gets trickle down support from MS and is still supported in a large number of recent applications (ex: Office XP, .Net 2.0 & IE6 all work in Win98).

Get her to use 98se. It's nearly the same, but has better memory management and stability. It's also much more compatible with hardware/software than 95.

Geez it sounds like you have one of my clients. lol I have at least a dozen clients that refuse to update no matter what I even told them that I would upgrade thier computer to Windows 98SE for free and they still turned it down.

If you have to be sneaky, upgrade her to Win98SE /w uSP2, then replace the startup image and the start bar image /w Windows 95.

The links you gave me are great! I was able to rebuild her system with no problems.

I was able to put Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 on her machine without any problems but I didn't do any Windows update for her. I'm going to buy a NIC card so that I can temporarily install it in her computer and then to a windows update. I need a NIC card anyway. It appears that I have a string of these computers coming my way.

You may also want to check if the video drivers [and eventually the sound, network, modem, printer etc drivers] are up to date.

The latest IE update that will work with 95 is 867801 on IE5.5 SP2. details are on http://erpman1.tripod.com/iewmpupd.html. Download it, click start -> run -> browse to where you saved the update -> add a /q /c suffix to the name (at the very end, one space after the last character), extract it to a temporary directory -> open a command prompt to that directory and run ieupdate q867801

The latest version of DirectX that works with 95 is 8.0a. there is an unofficial update for 95 on MDGx's site that should work on 95.

If she refuses to use Win98, give her the 98se base kernel and files with the 95 shell. The Win95 explorer.exe is actually faster and smaller than the 98 one, and as noted earlier, if the startup/shutdown screens are set to Win95 ones, she won't notice any difference (besides less crashing and more stability )
