I have a CTX EzBook, with Win98 on it. I have some valuable information on them and I'd like to try and network my WinXP Pro desktop to this Win98 laptop. Is there a way?
awergh
its perfectly possible you just configure it like two 98 computers
(have the same gateway, workgroup, and simular ip addresses {10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2} unless there is a
dhcp server where the ip addresses come from)

Just make sure you turn of the xp firewall
so that the 98 computer can access the xp computer.

What if the laptop doesn't have an RJ-45 jack?

you could use a serial or parallel cable (slower thou)

for serial use direct cable connection (98) dial up networking (xp)
or hyperterminal

for parallel use direct cable connection (98) dial up networking (xp)

I did it here with my little ol' 98/SE laptop and my XP tower.
I used a wireless dongle plugged into the USB port on the laptop and a wireless router attached to the tower.

It was somewhat slow but did work admirably.

If you just want to exchange files from one PC to another, a data transfer cable would probably work best for you. There have been numerous programs to actually do the transferring. Laplink is probably the best known one.

If you have a limited number of files to copy over, a USB Flash Drive like the one from SanDisk would be my first choice. It works without drivers on the XP tower, but you'll need the drivers from the manufacturer for the 98/SE machine.
Just copy the files from the laptop to the flash drive, take the FD to the XP tower and copy them into a folder on the HD. You can make several trips to copy a large number of files.
I've used this technique several times for my customers.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the replies. I just got a SanDisk 512MB Flash drive. But first I wanted to see if my laptop had viruses/etc, since it was so slow and always freeze on me. It had 26 viruses and 137 adware files, now it runs like a champ and doesn't freeze on me, and the flash drive worked smile.gif So now I can put this old beast away smile.gif
