I hope someone can help me out because after a week of research I still haven't got definitive answers. To narrow it down a bit I'm looking at Socket 754 mobos/Sempron processor, and would use ATA (not SATA) hard disk.
Nvidia NForce 4 chipset mobos: according to at least two manufacturers (MSI and Asus) no win98/SE drivers are provided. IIRC the MSI site says not supported. So, no go for these, apparently.
NVidia NForce 3 chipset mobos: This seems more promising and i'm currently looking at a Netconn mobo, NF3250K8AA.
Via chipset mobos: Think I'll probably avoid.
Any help appreciated. I'd hate to build a system only to find that win98SE would not work properly.

*NForce 3 I can confirm work as I'm using one right now (board and specs in sig).

Just make sure the CPU you get supports the X86 instruction set if you consider a 64-bit CPU. All AMD cpu's seem to support it while [I haven't looked lately] Intel 64-bit CPU's might not have support for the x86 instruction set.
As a note: Unless you have powered speakers, the onboard surround will be a big dissappointment. Very weak pre-amps on built-in sound solutions nowadays. I too have a REALTEK ac'97 surround built in. Now got it turned off in BIOS because it didn't meet my satisfaction.

Via actually is one of the better ones for Windows 98.
nForce is actually more likely to have compatibility problems with Windows 98.

I've taken the plunge and ordered the above mobo. Comes at quite a premium here in the UK (only one supplier, all others sold out). Foxconn actually gave a reply to a querry I made concerning whether they are/are not supporting this mobo BIOS. Yes, they are. So that's good news.
Now to find a compatible AGP8 graphics card. I'll stick with Nvidia to boost chances that it'll actually boot

most of the nVidia drivers i have above 61.34 support 6800s anyway (if you went that route)
afaik unlike the 6200 (thats the 6600s little sister card right ?) and 6600 (PCI-E),
the 6800 was designed for AGP so doesn't need a 'bridge chip' (on its AGP version)
this means (basically) there's less to go wrong
this extra instalation of extra chip/heat arrangements on cards with bridge chips are easily exacerbated by having various heat sink/fan arrangements fitted by different manufacturers.
anyway the basic idea is AGP native cards are probably best in AGP setups
6800 (and its high end versions) are (afaik) the last nVidia AGP native card
