MSFT changes their mind with WM hotfixes all the time. When extracted, they decide to use various foldernames instead of standardizing. I'll have to work on that too. Maybe all will get fixed this weekend if I feel up to it.

Couldn't "FOR /R" be used for those funky WMP hotfixes?
Instead of looking in specific folders, just loop thru all available sub-Folders of the unpacked WM hotfix.
QUOTE
FOR /R [[drive:]path] %variable IN (set) DO command [command-parameters]
Walks the directory tree rooted at [drive:]path, executing the FOR statement in each directory of the tree. If no directory specification is specified after /R then the current directory is assumed. If set is just a single period (.) character then it will just enumerate the directory tree.

BTW, you should use IE8-WindowsXP-KB974455-x86-xxx.exe if slipstreaming IE8, NOT WindowsXP-KB974455-x86-xxx.exe

That was the problem, IE8 version works fine. THX!
jvidal
you're welcome newwink.gif

Thanks for the inputs guys. Rev M was ok, so I went back to rev M and re-rolled the changes in. Maybe I had a copy/paste error or accidentally hit something on the keyboard I shouldn't have. Anyway, I still left the rev M in the zip package. Hope this does the trick. Please post results (good, bad or indifferent). I like to see feedback.

Once this is all well and good, I'll try tackling the WMP hotfix issues. The prob with that is that hfslip attempts to discover what WMP you are using and applies the appropriate hotfixes. The hotfix binaries come from inconsistant named files that seem to have no pattern. It's not as simple as you think, or maybe I just think too much. blink.gif
jvidal
But why does it work fine with rev M and not with Rev O?
It obviously can handle weirdly-named files, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Something got screwed in Rev O.
jvidal
Well, I tried Beta p and I must say it works just fine!
Nicely done, Tommy, thanks again!

bye!
gluon
nicely done tommyp thumbup.gif however for me "msimsg.dll.mui" goes into system32\mui\409 instead of 0409. I'm not too sure if it's an issue.... haven't see any impact.

also line 1884: RD/Q/S TEMP\langspecific gives "file not found" error while slipstreaming. I can understand why the line is there since extraction by 7zip gives the langspecific folder but seems like /X doesn't produce that folder.
tommyp
Thanks for the reports guys. I was unable to extract the MSI using a 2k box. I relied on a file extractor and saw the langspecific folder. Like you said, the folder is non-existent. Rev Q corrects both the non-existent missing folder and adds the zero before mui foldername. All should be good to go now.

Are there any issues with the latest set of XP's WM hotfixes?

Now mfplat.dll and wmp11.inf couldn't be copied.... Any ideas?

Please learn how to zip your log files next time. Thanks. Do you have the same prob with M?
jvidal
Also, clean your Hotfixes, you have redudant ones, eg: 972260 and 974455...
emzendron
Sorry... With the O version i have the wpdshext problem, but not the mfplat.dll and wmp11.inf.
jvidal
p version fixes the wpdshext.res problem. works 100% for me (though I'm not including MSI 4.5)
Although that's weird, rev m and rev p work fine. it's rev n and o that give the wpdshext.res error.
You should re-check your HF list and clean it up.

But they will appear in WU...
jvidal
No, they won't: KB974455 is a cumulative update, it REPLACES KB972260.
PLEASE recheck your HF list.
emzendron
I'd tested 2 times... Anyway.... Do you have a list (site) where i can see wich new HF replaces the old ones?

Thankz.

hotfix 099 - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
emzendron
I remade the process... and guess what? Now it's working... I don't know what cause the error, but i should have done something stupid...

Thankz.
jvidal
yeah, like including unneeded/obsolete/redundant hotfixes.

Just for kicks, I rebuilt using beta q and everything went just fine, no errors whatsoever.
Although I didn't include MSI 4.5 (is it really necessary??? I don't think so)
bye!
(and thx again, tommyp)
Acheron
Many thanks for Windows Installer 4.5 support!

I have tested Windows Installer 4.5 using Dutch Windows XP Pro SP3 including Windows Media Player 11, Internet Explorer 8 and all security and other hotfixes and everything works flawlessly!

It's a shame Microsoft still haven't fixed their Windows Installer 4.5 installer as all included files have no valid digital signature. When installing Windows Installer 4.5 manually you would get big trouble whenever sfc reverts to Windows Installer 3.1 files.

Using HFSLIP SFC reports no errors to the user or asks for CD's, except the event log will contain notices.

@jvidal. MSI 4.5 isn't required, but is much faster than MSI 3.1 and contains additional features.

jvidal
It is?
I have it installed, but I did so manually, I do not put on my slipstreamed CDs.
Maybe I should...now that it is handled correctly...

thx!
tommyp
New beta R is up that addresses some 2k WMP and WM hotfixes. The changes do not affect XP.
gluon
nice release tommyp, MSI 4.5 is neatly slipstreamed smile.gif ever since downloading DX9 August 2009 I just realised some DX11 runtime is included. The new dx11 dlls are slipstreamed perfectly and there is also a new library d3dcsx.

So I've got a feature request for a d3dcsx slipstream if you don't mind. The following modification is just a suggestion and most probably not be the best way of doing things.
Line 2144 needs to be modified to
IF EXIST HFCABS\*d3d*_x86.cab FOR /F %%I IN ('DIR/B/A-D/ON HFCABS\*d3d*_x86.cab') DO EXPAND HFCABS\%%I -F:* WORK\DX9EXTRA >NUL

and the following should be added to line 2167 (after D3DCompiler slipstream)
CODE
IF EXIST WORK\DX9EXTRA\d3dcsx* FOR /F "TOKENS=2* DELIMS=_" %%I IN ('DIR/B/A-D/ON WORK\DX9EXTRA\d3dcsx*.dll') DO (
    REN WORK\DX9EXTRA\d3dcsx_%%I d3dcsx_%%I
    ECHO>>SOURCESS\I386\TXTSETUP.SIF d3dcsx_%%I = 1,,,,,,,2,0,0,d3dcsx_%%I&ECHO>>SOURCESS\I386\DOSNET.INF d1,d3dcsx_%%I
)

Hello,

Just wanted to let you know that in a another hfslip run (with version "r" this time) I had several files in the textmode phase of setup with the "could not be copied" error message. Files seemed not to be related to each other or to all belong to the same patch. Nothing changed compared to my previous attempts (except that I this time installed on a real system instead of a virtual one), so I'm really puzzled.
Not a big problem, as all these files (6 or 7 IIRC, among them "advpack.dll.mui", "jscript.dll.mui") were translation files only, i.e. "<something>.mui", but strange nevertheless. By the way, "wpdshext.res" was not affected this time.

What's going on here? Can someone confirm, or is this something only I experience with the new beta?
Acheron
Have you actually checked if all these extra DirectX dll's are actually installed by default on Windows XP?
tommyp
Tomalak - did you have the same issues with a VM? Or just the real install? Are those files missing inside the sourcess\i386 folder? If the files are in the sourcess, chances are it's a bad burn. I typically test the CDs out on a VM prior to a real install to verify the burn is ok.

Well, to be honest what I said above is not exactly true: one change I did was the replacement of the SOURCE folder content. I was doing my tests so far (for MSI installer and debugging some other things) with an XP Pro source and in a VM, but now as I wanted to install XP on a netbook, I used the respective XP Home source which I extracted from the recovery DVD.

I didn't create an ISO image (so a bad burn cannot be the reason), but put the resulting SOURCESS directory to an USB stick and did the installation from there, with the help of WinSetupFromUSB. This might have been the source of my problems (the tool does some modifications to the source, i.e. it adapts the "WINNT.SIF" file).
So I wanted to try with the exact same configuration as before, but this time in a VM and from CD, to see if the copy problems occur there also. But now I'm not even able to get that far! See screenshot below, this appears directly after booting from the CD. It requests me to put a floppy disk named "Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack" into drive A:. I cannot go on from there, and only abort the setup at this point. What the hell? blink.gif

Has anyone experienced that before, any ideas? Incomplete source (don't think so, as the Windows installation from the USB stick went fine), wrong WINNT.SIF (but tried even without such file, therefore cannot be a wrong parameter I think), wrong CD label (tried "GRTMHOEM_DE" and "GRTMHFPP_DE" which seem appropriate for me) or some hfslip hiccup? I'm perplexed, never seen that. Cannot reproduce the other problems as long as this big obstacle stands between me and another test install newwink.gif What's wrong with my XP Home source?
tommyp
Sure doesn't sounds like an hfslip related issue at first glance. Question for you - did you/can you test your dvd extracted source by itself to see if it installs? Remember, hfslip creates bootable cd images. If you do something else with it, you're on your own. Sorry. Perhaps you should ask on that forum instead? I did see a similar prob once, it was an XP home upgrade cd. For it to work, you needed to have an old OS installed on it prior to installing.

Well, it was not. Of course. I meanwhile found out the reason... Stupid me whistling.gif

QUOTE (tommyp @ Oct 19 2009, 12:26 AM) *
Question for you - did you/can you test your dvd extracted source by itself to see if it installs?

Yes, that was exactly what I was doing next - testing with unmodified source. Failed as well, so no hfslip issue.

And then I had the crucial idea: I was able to get the full i386 directory from the DVD (resp. Ghost image on it), but not the few files on top level (e.g. setup.exe), they are not stored in the image. So I took these files from the XP Pro source. What I didn't know is that the identifier files for Windows and the applied service packs have different names for XP Home and Pro. So renaming "WIN51IP", "WIN51IP.SP2" and "WIN51IP.SP3" to "WIN51IC", "WIN51IC.SP2" and "WIN51IC.SP3" was the solution! woot.gif
Looks as if installation would work now with unmodified source (due to time I didn't try further than to the start of the file copy in text mode phase, but I assume everything will go smooth from there on). Strange thing is that I wasn't immediately able to recognize that because installation from the USB stick worked, only occurs for the CD based setup.

Maybe this post is of help to someone else some day when he/she encounters that strange behaviour. Sorry for the unneccessary disconcertment. blushing.gif

Now I can finally retry everything from an ISO image and in a VM and see whether the problems described before are caused by hfslip or only a result of the "transfer to USB" program. But not today, too late. Will report back tomorrow...

Good night,
Tomalak

Yes, d3dcsx_42.dll [5,373 KB] will be installed in system32 if I run directx_aug2009_redist.exe manually. That's the only dll currently missing from the slipstreaming process.

Okay, short followup. With the test install from CD in a VM everything worked as expected - no file copy errors (except my famous "tweakui.exe" problem newwink.gif) and no other problems. So everything I experienced with the other install like several files not being copied, one update reported as missing, reg files in HFSVCPACK not being applied etc., seems to be the result of the above mentioned WinSetupFromUSB tool which apparently broke several things by fiddling with my source.

So my quest continues to find a way how I can install Windows from an USB stick, but based directly on thee ISO image or at least the SOURCESS folder with as few modifications a possible. Don't want to buy an external CD drive just for that one-time install to the netbook. But that's a story not belonging here, not hfslip related...

Regards,
Tomalak
jvidal
Tomalak, you need three utilities to achieve that:

- PeToUSB
- USB_prep
- Bootsect

I have a tutorial, but it is in spanish, I don't know if you can read spanish...(I doubt it)

Wait, here's the original tutorial in english:

Beta S looks good. NO error or whatsoever. (done with Wi 4.5, WMP11, IE8, latest dx). Thanks for the continuous improvement. smile.gif
gluon
rev S looks good, thanks for adding the code tommyp smile.gif it's a shame NoKillBits=YES does not seem to cover kb973525 in XP. Been reading your code but still can't understand that killbit business.... it's only one hotfix anyway so no worries cool.gif
Overall, I'm very happy with this latest version biggrin.gif
tommyp
The prob with the kill bits is that the initial killbits is set, various hotfixes overwrite things, and then in the end, one or two more still need to be set. HFSLIP just sets the appropriate killbits as late as possible during installation.

If you can, please do me a favor because I don't want to test out XP. Run hfslip with your current setup, install it on a VM. Obtain and install the freeware regshot program (google for it). Do a regshot, install the KB973525 hotfix, do another snapshot and compare the results. There will be some sort of HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{...nonsense...}","Compatibility Flags",0x00010001,0x00000400 ADDED to the registry. I just need the line or lines added or modified to the registry and I'll add it to the program. Actually, all I really need is the nonsense part of the changes. lol. Once that is done, then all will be cool.
gluon
Cool I'll do that without the NoKillBits=YES. I'm a bit curious abt the code that handles the NoKillBits, I'm reading it as:

IF NoKillBits != YES THEN
insert values in registry
END IF

Is my interpretation correct? Does that mean we would not modify the registry if NoKillBits=YES?
Sorry if I'm asking such stupid questions, I just feel that it's a bit counter intuitive and I'm curious.

Tomalak, you need three utilities to achieve that:

- PeToUSB
- USB_prep
- Bootsect

I have a tutorial, but it is in spanish, I don't know if you can read spanish...(I doubt it)

Wait, here's the original tutorial in english:

http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/installin...-usb-thumb.html

bye!

I tried this tutorial but when I install xp and the files are copied I get error: advpack.mui cannot be copied.
tommyp
gluon - Another favor... can you search through your sourcess\i386 folders for hf*.inf files that contain the text "973525"? If you find it, please zip it and attach it. Thanks!

Also, have you tried running the script with the nokillbits set as default in the hfslip.ini file? Or in other words, delete the nokillbits line.
gluon
I've always run without the NoKillBits=YES in HFANSWER.INI... or more accurately I'm commenting it out since I cannot determine the benefit. You can see the attached files.

gluon - One more q for you. Sorry to piece meal you to death. On a clean installed machine and doing nothing else, does "973525" (no quotation marks) exist anywhere in the registry? I'm just trying to see if that INF file is actually installed at all.

I tried this tutorial but when I install xp and the files are copied I get error: advpack.mui cannot be copied.

Same for me (by the way, you can skip the error and continue), this seems to be a general problem with this kind of setup. I tried the above mentioned SetupWinFromUSB tool as well as WinToFlash, identical result. So yesterday I decided to use the direct approach - put WinPE to an USB flash disc with SOURCESS folder on it (no problem when installed from CD to a VM, so the source is okay), booted from it, launched Windows installation via "winnt32.exe".

Installation was overall successful, but: seven or eight *.mui files reported as missing during text mode copy (I have the names if anyone is interested). Some more *.mui and one .dll reported as missing during GUI phase. $OEM$ folder was apparently not copied, so my drivers included there were not used. "winnt.sif" (resp. "unattend.txt" for non-CD based install) was not considered at all, braking some customizing settings I put there. Everything foreseen for T-13 (HFSVCPACK_SW1 and HFSVCPACK_SW2) was installed as intended, but everything that is usually performed after first boot during logon (e.g. some registry tweaks I have in HFSVCPACK, or putting the hfslip entry in the software list) was not executed.
In the end I had a working system, but not one I was satisfied with. All not critical issues, but nuisances. The different setup method that is used for USB based installs (copying everything to the "$win_nt$.~bt" and "$win_nt$.~ls" folders first, and obviously making some other changes, all by "winnt32.exe") has apparently its problems...

Conclusion: I probably have to swallow the bitter pill, buy an external CD drive and install XP to the netbook from there. The ISO image seems to be the only reliable way that works without all this hassle confused.gif

Sorry for the offtopic talk (will give up at this point anyway, need a working system now and no more time for tests in the next feew weeks),
Tomalak
jvidal
You don't need to buy an external drive, just buy an ide/sata to USB bridge (about USD$20), and use any old IDE CD you might have lying around (it's what I did for when I need to install junk to Netbooks)

You can use it to plug any IDE/SATA drive when you need to back stuff up or recover stuff from a disk installed on a dead PC, etc...

bye!

No worries mate, I've been doing it on VM... still fine tuning my HFCLEANUP. Yeah it's in Windows XP\SP4\Updates just like the rest of the hotfixes.

Note: I put KB973525 in the HF folder which resulted in the INF file and registry entry. But for the regshot report I followed your instructions.
tommyp
Gluon - can you rename that same inf file you located before and place it into the HFSVCPACK folder? Rerun the script and test out.

Is anyone else beside gluon having probs with KB973525 on XP?
gluon
Yes it works smile.gif Took out the hotfix from HF folder and placed the INF file in HFSVCPACK made MBSA 2.1 reports the killbits as being installed.
Is this the final solution for the killbit issue?
tommyp
Nope, that's not the final solution. Maybe by the weekend, I'll post a new beta up that addresses this.
chtom
Hi, I have test this beta S (October 20, 2009).
It's work with XP French : SP3 + IE8 + Last DirectX + WMP11.
after reboot, I need install only :
- Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) when access "Windows Update"
- Windows Genuine Advantage (KB905474) when access "Windows Update"

Thanks a lot !

The problem is iso file take 705 Mo (739,743,744 octets)
