I don't really like Linux, but Knoppix was alright. You can download it for free, it works alright, unlike SUSE Linux and Fedora Core, both of them gave me a headache.
Daemonforce
Knoppix has always been alright because it's this massive God-monster of an unmatched demo and forensics kit. O_o

Now try Slax. The main dev has gone on vacation for a while, so these will stop being released faster than hotcakes. The second I saw Slax, I instantly knew I would like it when I got it and I do. If you're primarily a Windows user, grab KillBill Edition. biggrin.gif
Camarade_Tux
I did not try it, is KillBill Ed really efficient ?
(it is made to be able to run windows apps and kernels)
Daemonforce
Every user's experience varies. But I must admit that I love Slax. smile.gif

It has a strange feel to it. As if you're actually in full control of the operating system. o_O
DigeratiPrime
with slax dont forget to use the copy2ram boot option if you have the memory! it makes a huge difference.

also check out myslaxcreator which makes it easy to customize.

Why is Linux Successful?
errmm... What was the point of pasting an entire article, 7 years old & invalid already?
Pasting a link to that webpage would have been just as useful, & better!

If you wanna try & seriously want to use linux,
I suggest to use DEBIAN, it the most stable & the most flexible linux.
And it is free open source.
what you install is what you need.

NO AND NO... *gets frustrated* i am really sick of stipulations like this... please read my thread about linux..

First of all... there are many forms of UNIX, and GNU/Linux is one of them, and them from there, there is probably many forms of it, there is RPM based, and DEB based, SLK based... and many others...

BSD is NOT linux full stop, and what the hell is buntu based? i hope your not saying ubuntu/nubuntu/kubuntu... realmad.gif

PC-BSD is a BSD made to be easy as Linux and to support Linux softs and drivers.

Thanks for your opinion. You know what they say about opinions, don't you?

The age of the article does nothing to reduce its relevancy. Furthermore, a link is not as useful, as most people won't take the time to follow it. Whether it is "better" or not is a matter of opinion, which I've already addressed. So, there is your point. Regards smile.gif

I have "dabbled" with installing numerous versions of Linux and BSD in the past. I have to say that in my opinion Mandriva (Used to be Mandrake Linux) has got to be the easiest to install (that said it isnt always easy to do the complex stuff in)

A very good article recommending Mepis linux. Must read!

I have installed Mepis and XPpro on a 12 gig drive in an older PIII
laptop. thumbup.gif

i've tried many distributions on my virtual machines and this is what i've found:

* Ubuntu: the easiest and maybe the most valid
* Fedora: like ubuntu, and he's more good looking
* mandriva: the most complete but the most difficult (compared to ubuntu and fedora)

if i were you, i'd try Fedora newwink.gif

I would recommend Ubuntu [7.04] as a starter - http://www.ubuntu.com, as it has brilliant support forums.
Once you have used Ubuntu for a few months and are comfortable with Linux, then I would recommend you try OpenSuSE (http://en.opensuse.org). OpenSuSE is sponsored by Novell, who help code it along with everyone else. It is very powerful, and has a very well-written support wiki. I know you don't want to pay for it, but it does have a boxed version with full tech. support for £50 (not sure how much in dollars).

I recommend the RESULINUX, the fast linux with KDE.

He is Brazilian. You must down the English or you native language pack
