Hello?

When I was using ME, I noticed some
update download folder that held the
critical update files temporarily until
thes updates were applied.

Then, immediately afterwards, those
download files were removed from
this folder.

I do not remember the exact name of
this update download folder, but is there
a way to save the update downloads in
that folder?

Also, I would like to know where I can
get these critical update files for ME as
ME's end-of-support has neared to this
June.

I tried MS download site and was able
to select up ME's critical update files, but
I could not save them.

If you'd like to save updates to your HD, go to:

or do this step-by-step:
1. Go to [must use MS IE 5/6 in 98 SE/ME or 2000/XP/2003]:

2. Click the "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems" link.
3. Select your desired OS from the "Operating System" list.
4. Select your desired language.
5. Click the Search button.
6. Let's say you selected Windows 98/98 SE.
7. Click on "Critical Updates and Service Packs (76)" as of April 17 2006.
8. Select "Sort by: Posted date". This way newest updates will be on top.
9. Add to your download list by clicking the "Add" button for all updates you wish.
10. Click "Go to download basket" when done.
11. Make sure the directory where u want to save them already exists on your HD(s). Otherwise create it.
12. Type the full path or click "Browse" and point to the directory of your choice.
13. Click the "Download now" button.
14. After downloads are completed *must exit all instances* of MS IE browser.
15. Open Windows Update.log from %windir% [= usually C:\WINDOWS] in Notepad or better text editor:

16. Copy + paste http links into your web browser to download the files to your default Downloads directory.
17. Or go to the deepest tree subdirectories created by WU under the main directory you selected as destination and copy the EXE files anywhere else you like, rename, delete them etc.
18. Done.

Well, I just did but I am getting some
update error that cannot display the
requested page when I click on the download
basket after having selected the update files.

I am doing this from XP Home in IE 6 SP2.

You need to create a new folder to point your download basket to before typing [browsing for] the drive letter + folder name [full path] into the web browser box.

This should work with all these OSes: Win98 SE, WinME, Win2000, WinXP + Win2003.
I tested it with Win98 SE + WinXP.

Rather than messing around with getting Windows Update to save the files... just wget each file URL per the log file. Linux toys make Windows better.

Hi MDGx,

The requested page error I got was
immediately after following your step 10.

Now, instead of selecting all the different
update categories, when I just selected
few files under the recommended category,
I was able to go to step 13.

But, when I browse for the download directory,
I do not see any files at all even though I was
asked to accept MS Agreements and sorts during
the step 13.

What am I missing?

Wget [for *nix OSes] requires installing a *nix OS distro [Linux/BSD/FreeBSD/Solaris/MacOS X/UNIX/etc], which makes the answer to this person's problem much harder than it really needs to be, because most people who post in this forum run solely MS OSes.
Wget [for Windows 32-bit OSes] on the other hand, is only a command line tool, which needs learning and manual input.
Again, this makes the answer to this person's problem much harder than it really needs to be, because most people posting in this forum are not used to typing stuff at the command line to get things done [a matter of opinion, of course].

IMHO:
Wget could make the subject for a different topic, if you wish.

I do this for years in both Win98 SE + XP, and after I did it the 1st time, became a very easy routine task.

Make sure your firewall and/or system protection software [if any] doesn't interfere with WU web site.

Also, if using WinXP [or any other NTx OS] to connect to WU site, make sure you are already logged on as Administrator/Power User with full rights.

Make sure if you type the full path, that the target folder is already present on the target drive/partition.

Make sure you don't have a HOSTS file in your %windir% folder [Win9x/ME OSes] or in %windir%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC [WinNTx OSes] that may have WU web pages listed with 127.0.0.1 or with 0.0.0.0 in front of them. If this is the case, move temporarily your HOSTS file(s) somewhere else. More info on HOSTS files:

Make sure after all downloads are completed that you close/exit *all* MS IE instances/windows.
You can check if there are still any open by hitting the same time Ctrl+Alt+Del and then looking through the list, or better [if using any Win9x/ME OS], use CoolKill [freeware]:

If there are any MS IE [iexplore.exe] instances open, close them all from Task Manager dialog or CoolKill icon [right-click on it in Tray bar].

Only after that you will be able to access the "Windows Update.log" file from %windir%, and open it in Notepad or similar text/ASCII editor.

P.S.:
MS IE 6.0 SP2 [WinXP upgraded with SP2] was radically changed to block potential malware/spyware/etc by disabling ActiveX controls [Active Scripts]. You need to make sure ActiveX is enabled in order to access WU site: IE icon on Desktop -> right-click on it -> Properties -> Security -> Internet -> Custom Level -> allow ActiveX by clicking appropriate check boxes.

Yes, I have disabled firewall and enabled
the running of the ActiveX.

Being dual booting with Linux, I have tried
the same under GNOME GUI using the firefox
browser, but the MS site informs that I should
be running IE browser.

Is there a way I can try downloading
the ME updates from Linux GNOME GUI?

To my knowledge you must use Internet Eplorer 5, 6 or newer with ActiveX enabled in order to access WU and download updates.
Although, there is a Firefox/Netscape/Mozilla/Opera extension that may [or may not] allow some of these functions, if you wish to use such browsers to do this:

I don't think any OS other than 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP or 2003 [and a few others listed at WU catalog] can be used to download updates this way.
Linux, BeOS, BBS, UNIX, MacOS X, OS/2, DOS and related are cetainly not allowed to use WU, because of MS detection, but I haven't tested under other OS with Firefox extension above installed:

FYI:
There must be something you can do to allow WU to work in MS IE under WinXP.
Most likely culprits:
- please inspect Internet Options from MS IE and modify settings, then restart Windows or log off + log back in to experiment.
- make sure you have full administrative rights.
- make sure your firewall/protection/antivirus/antispy software do not interfere with WU.
