I've been reading trough the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-014 and found out that there are different MDAC versions for W2k.
I've found this:
MDAC Component Checker
Component CheckerI used the component checker to find out the mdac version that runs on my w2k.
There:
MDAC Update for W2kI've found an update to MDAC 2.8 Service Pack 1 for w2k
Now my question is if it would be possible to hfslip this mdac update into w2k including the appropriate
KB911562?

I'm sure you would be able to using a switchless installer, or possibly Tomcat would be able to incorporate such a slipstream into the script.

MDAC_TYP.EXE is supported since yesterday or so but it's installed via SVCPACK so the update will probably not take.
I'll check it out.

Be careful what you wish for with the newest mdac_typ. It has lots of extras that aren't part of the original 2k build. I'm not exactly sure why it is needed, my PC works fine with only 3 out of the 80 or so files.

Warn out because 2.8 sp1 needs 2.8 to be installed first.
So it may be a bit harder to upgrade a CD (because of the order).

MDAC service packs are not incremental patches, as is the case with some products. Therefore, you do not need to install MDAC 2.6 before you install MDAC 2.6 SP1, for example.

It also says 2.8 SP1 on XP is installed with SP2 and can't be installed otherwise.
QUOTE
Installed with Windows XP SP2, otherwise cannot be installed
I made some more tests and I have to apologize, MDAC 2.8SP1 won't install on XPSP1 even with MDAC 2.8. Also, the two installation files are approximately of the same size.
Sorry.
While installing MDAC 2.8 I read it installed some files for SQL Server. Moreover, SQL Server 2000 SP4 ships MDAC 2.8 SP1. If HFSlip slipstreams this, it would be nice not to slipstream those files (maybe with renaming it to MDAC_TYP_nosql.exe)

When trying to install this update over MDAC 2.8 (not SP1), I get
"0.688: FileVersion of C:\Programs\Common\System\MSADC\msadco.dll is Greater or Equal To 2.72.0.0"
But I don't know what other files are included in KB911562.
Also, will HFSlip let me slipstream MDAC 2.8 SP1 into XP SP1a (which is not allowed with normal hotfixes)
Tomcat76

It will probably come automatically when support is added for Win2K. But I'm only in for a full MDAC replacement and only if it can be done without modded sfc*.dll files.

Nope

yes its possible! i did it

but it looks like you ignore my reply #8..
so Tomcat76 dont say its not possible. maybe not possible with hfslip but i integrated it into w2k and this little tool which Bugs Bunny found, too detects mdac 2.8 sp1

Hi
Is there a way to proof the installation of the files from this .cab?
I have made a new install, but iīm not sure if all is correct now.

I think the simplest is to install the MDAC update intended for MDAC 2.8 SP1:

wela
Apr 19 2006, 01:07 AM
Iīve made a new CD with W2ksp4/IE6sp1/Dx9 and the
hfsliped mdac.cab posted by sereby without the mdac hotfix for mdac253.
It does not work. WU tried to install the missing Hotfix for mdac 253 and the experiment to install the Hotfix for Mdac 28sp1 failed.

you have to add the lines from entries.ini into the files its a nlite hotfix! and there it works!

@ sereby
Normaly i donīt use nlite, there it works fine. Using hfslip was an experiment.
Tomcat76

It should've worked. There's nothing special about the ini file. Did you put it into HFAAO?
wela

I didnīt. Iīll give it a second and third look at weekend.
Have a nice day.
wela
Apr 21 2006, 02:18 PM
Iīve had time and i did it again, now using HFAAO folder. Itīs a pity, but it doesnīt work. Hfslip worked fine, setup goes through, Login ok. Trying to install the mdac hotfix for 2.8sp1 manually. Setup quits with the message "that the version is not detectable. Installation is damaged or files are broken".
Out off topic:
Mdac_Typ.exe goes to HFSVCPack_Sw Folder? Right??
Super-Magician
Apr 21 2006, 02:42 PM
No, MDAC_TYP.EXE goes in the HF folder.
Maybe now it'll work

Tomcat: Seems we posted at nearly the same time

Have had the third look to mdac.cab. Using hfslip_60421d, w2ksp4ger, ie6sp1,dx9 and hotfixe from Tomcatīs list without mdac hotfix 253. mdac.cab in hfaao. Wu shows nothing. manually installing mdac hotfix 28sp1 failed with "Version not detectable. installation damaged or files broken".
Also build a installation cd with mdac_typ.exe in hf. Wu tried to install mdc hotfix 253. Manually install of mdac hotfix 281 failed with "Version not detected. installation damaged".
have a nice weekend.

mdac.cab in hfaao. Wu shows nothing.
I read the configuration file inside the package and it says that the hotfix for MDAC 2.8 SP1 is integrated into it. So it's normal WU doesn't ask you to download it.
QUOTE (wela @ Apr 22 2006, 08:16 PM)

manually installing mdac hotfix 28sp1 failed with "Version not detectable. installation damaged or files broken".
When you include the MDAC addon in nLite, are you then getting the same error message when installing the hotfix manually later on?

Apr 22 2006, 12:42 PM
FWIW, the mdac_typ adds files to the Program Files folder. To take care of the file copying, you would need a special INF file to copy them over, while at the same time you need modify the layout.inf file, which is a protected file. My advice is to svcpack it and call it a day.
Tomcat76
Apr 22 2006, 12:44 PM
The MDAC.CAB addon is installed through sysoc.inf.
MDAC_TYP.EXE is installed through svcpack.inf.
Nothing needs to be changed.

There is a problem with the handling of MDAC_TYP.EXE in the current final. I've corrected that in the new test release 60422d.
I'm now going to see if HFSLIP can take care of the 2.8 SP1 hotfix when MDAC_TYP.EXE is included.

Apr 23 2006, 07:01 AM
Iīm angry about that sh... Mdac. The ways tomcat showed didnīt work for me, donīt know why not.
Also the newest testrelease failed. The installation works at T13, but itīs incomplett. I think the installer havenīt enough time to copy all the stuff.
the only way to get a successfull installation for me is the OEM folder and GUIRunOnce in WINNT.sif. That works.
OK, guys, thx for your work. I have also a other life, not only my machines.
Tomcat76
Apr 23 2006, 07:39 AM
Just wondering... How do you see it's "incomplete"? I'm in the middle of testing this myself too now.
Tomcat76
Apr 23 2006, 09:01 AM
The command that's used in 60422e makes Windows setup go through without complaining (an installation dialog for MDAC 2.8 even pops up briefly) but Windows Update later asks to install the hotfix for MDAC 2.5 so it's indeed not fully installed.
I'm gonna let MDAC_TYP.EXE go the same route as UPHClean.msi for Win2K. I'm testing it now. Stay tuned...

Here's an unrelated localization issue. For some unknown reason, MDAC packages do not contain locale designation or version number in their filename, unlike most other language-specific updates - that is, they all are named MDAC_TYP.EXE regardless of target language or version.
This is a bit inconvenient, so I typically rename them to something like MDAC_TYP_281EN.exe, just in case.
So, is it possible to check not just for MDAC_TYP.EXE but for .EXE files which begin with MDAC_TYP?

Just an FYI...
An "internal build" (

) of HFSLIP integrates the KB911562 hotfix into MDAC_TYP.EXE. Windows Update doesn't complain but it's still not 100% ready for publication. The problem is that, while Windows installs MDAC 2.8 SP1, a dialog comes up informing the user that "Exception Pack" is going to be installed. You can only click "OK" or "More info". After you click OK, installation proceeds normally. I'm going to see if this can be fixed with a reg hack prior to installation.
If anyone knows more about this... Speak out...
