· at the end of some modules' installation, when reboot should've occured, warnings popped up instead, saying something like "You must quit this program first if you want to quit windows. Press Yes to close this program and quit Windows, or press No to continue running this program and Windows".

I had this happen after the MP9 module today, but I also had this happen once before with an earlier version of AP (different module, I think) without being able to replicate it, so I didn't report it, thinking it was peculiar to my system or a random occurrence.

The message you are getting happens when AP has lost control of the OS during a patch session -- by using the switch /Q:A /R:N with most hotfixes, what we are doing is asking the hotfixes, nicely, if they can leave any rebooting up to the user. Unless its an actual bug (still possible), at least one update is rebooting after its finished when its not supposed to.

If you can narrow down which ones are doing this and post the result, that would be helpful.

@ soporific:

I'm ready to realize AP for italian system, with a reduced number of components for win98se (28).
Therefore I'm localizing AP 1.95 code.
For you it is possibile to automate execution of IEradicator and successive installation of IE6SP1?
If yes, there is no problem.

Ps: I send you also all components interested in a 7zip archive more later.
MDGx
soporific:

If I may make a suggestion:
If you'd like to add more options/system components/updates/etc to Auto-Patcher, you could add only the direct download URL links to the actual files [eventually with a short description], and let the user select which ones he/she wants to install.
This way new add-ons won't increase the size of Auto-Patcher.

HTH
Drugwash
No. There are still many people that do not have Internet access. Auto-Patcher can be copied over from a CD/DVD media and installed on such system, but relying on download links would just cripple the package.

That could only be a temporary solution for alpha/debug/testing versions, but definitely NOT for release versions.
Molecule
there is a predicate inside MGDx' post that I sort of like …

and that is the idea that windows 98 is definitely not being put to bed just yet … I have no doubt that there will definitely be updates in the future.

so, setting aside the flak I may take for this … because what I'm going to do is suggest that as Autopatcher98se gets finalized, its one-gulp format (which is excellent for consolidating development overview but at 230M gives everyone on dialup heartburn) will cause accessibility problems and a reactionary political pressure.

Might I suggest that AP98se be eventually merged with DefinitiveList98se … in the manner of jcarle's wonderful msfn project called Windows Update Downloader for Unattended CDs see http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=147

For w2k, the WUD Windows Update Downloader reads a text-based updatelist .ul file (contained in a zip .ulz), and maintains a homebase directory of patches and add-ons for 2K-autopatcher. The homebase directory is divided into sensible categories, each category maintained in its own directory, specifically, [.NET Framework 1.1] [.NET Framework 2.0] [Critical Updates] [Service Packs] [Windows Media Player] [Other]. "Other" contains things like Windows Rights Management, Windows Installer, etc. etc.

The .ul updatelist file is a text-based xml file, which for 98se is almost already prepared from soporific's update list. An example of the first listing in the current .ul file is

<description>This update addresses the vulnerability discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-016. To find out if other security updates are available for you, see the Additional Information section at the bottom of this page.</description>

      </update>

jcarle's WUD, if fed an updatelist for the 98se patches, could be used by any user to automatically maintain his or her homebase of update files in 1-10 Meg chunks. The schema for 98se would obviously differ from that for w2k, so I'll outline the w2k process: the user downloads the latest .ulz (10k), unzips it to a .ul (53k), and opens it in WUD update downloader. WUD reads the home directory of the user, and compares its filelist to the latest update. It graphically gives the user the option to select which files needed, and then downloads them (a nice feature). It can delete the unwanted files from the home directory. For w2k, different .ulz files can be maintained for different languages too, which might be nice for 98se too.

After soporific finalizes Autopatcher98se technology (for which for testing he obviously needs total control of patches available on the computer and their locations), I would love to see his technology compressed to a zip file and then combined with a companion .ulz file. The companion 98se.ulz could then maintain the precise directory structure on the user's computer, exactly to soporific's specifications, through the WUD downloader. That would solve the problem of the big-endian 230M one-gulp, and it would solve MGDx' softly expressed concern that room be left open for future growth -- it might be one way to make soporific's technology a part of the future of 98se.
Drugwash
OK, then I guess having both web and full-size installers available for download, would be the best option, as every user would have the choice to grab the version that suits him best.

It looks like the WM Encoder is doing it. First time I had choices 1 and 2 set to install. (Legacy and Encoder.) This time I left it at default (Legacy only) and it went as expected.
Eck
I had WMEncoder and the legacy stuff checked and didn't get that issue. That was with 1.91 though, and I had it install WMP9 and the codecs as well. I also deactivated 98SE2ME and 98MP10 stuff, installing those afterwards.

Next 98SE install, I'll be using the new version.

Just to comment on what's being discussed about future updates, besides bug fixing current patches and working on fancy GUI stuff I really don't see a lot of updates in the future. Without knowing Microsoft proprietary secret information there's only so much that is possible. I find it amazing how much has been accomplished, witness the ESDI fix for 48 bit LBA, IE6SP1 patches to fix Explorer slowdowns, etc. I think the community is sorely missing the creator of those.

Web updates to fix, update already installed patches would be a cool thing though. That way we wouldn't need to download and run an entire new version of Auto-Patcher just to fix stuff it already installed. A good suggestion there by MDGx. It would be nice if an easy way could be figured out that would accomplish that. Maybe just a dedicated thread only for links to individual update patches to update an Auto-Patched system? I don't think something as complex as WindowsUpdate would be needed. Perhaps just patches we could download that specifically target updates to fixes done by Auto-Patcher?

Auto-Patcher for win 98 se can run on win me or win 98 fe?

Darn, I've tried it again with WM Encoder choice (for other reasons, having restored again) and *didn't* have it happen. As I said, my original sense was that it may have been random, so hard to test. WM Encoder seems unlikely to be causing it anyway, since WMP 9, codecs, and patches occur afterward.

I've been toying with additionally installing a few apparently remaining codecs from wmp6cdcs.exe. GSpot reports three additional codecs installed after running wmp6cdcs.exe, and also wmp6cdcs.exe reports three to install after the AP module is run. Maybe they only work with MP 6.4 or are obsolete, but I actually use 6.4 rather than MP9 for wmv when possible.

Any thoughts on wmp6cdcs.exe? What is actually in the Legacy pack?

What is actually in the Legacy pack?
It's actually the Windows Media Player 7.1 installation package. The way the module is setup, the user never sees 7.1 because 9.0 is immediately installed afterwards. But if you compared the installations you'd notice more files are installed when you also install 7.1 --- these are the ones Windows Encoder 7.1 needs or it won't work as intended. So i decided to call it the Legacy files pack as that's what they in fact are.

huh.gif The package as it exists contains all the updates for Win98se --- the only reason it doesn't work for the other versions of Windows is that their hotfixes haven't been included (although there is lots of overlap) and their data hasn't been included in the modules ... there is no reason why the structure of the program can't be used for the other OSes yes.gif--- just replace the data inside the modules - different file names and check info, that's it! --- biggrin.gif THAT is possible ... shifty.gif

Yes i am available, but first please be more clear about what you are proposing ... i'm still a bit confused ... oh, you are going to send me the localisation stuff, yes, you need to send me the files as well. I hope that's right!

AND in other news ...

if anyone's interested, i've put together a LITE version of Auto-Patcher for the bandwidth challenged among us ... this version is without any of the bloat: no Net framework baloney, hardly any optional components, only the latest visual basic runtimes, no WMP optional components, etc. All in all, 70 MB was shaved off the original installer size. I could have maybe saved another 20 MB if I got rid of EVERYTHING that wasn't necessary but i was going for efficiency rather than the smallest file size possible. I might do some more pruning, but expect a size close to 150 MB (it's at 170 MB now). Available in a few days ...

wow, this is what i've been looking for. absolutely amazing stuff. just one question about it, not sure if this came up before. After i run install and run auto patcher, can i then uninstall it without losing all the updates? i mean, auto patcher is amazing and all, but i like to keep my install nice and lite, so i don't really want 250mb of files hanging around if its just a once every install type of deal for me. but again, amazing work here! thumbup.gif

Ooh! A Question I can answer!

Yes, you can uninstall it. You already ran it and it installed the updates so removing all the files causes no problems. Just make sure to burn the installer to a cdr first so you can install it again!

You might want to check out that manual installs folder to be sure you've installed the stuff in there before getting rid of it all.

In any case you can always install it again as long as you saved it.

I got this as a PM:

I downloaded Win98SE AutoPatcher last night, installed it on my machine at home and then selected the "S" option from the the "AutoPatcher98 - CHOICE" dialogue, followed by the "M" option.

On completion of the process, I expected to get a report that listed all the missing updates / patches on my o/s.

Instead the process appeared to terminate abnormally and closed the Console window without displaying any error message (it's possible the Console window closed to quickly for me to read any error message that may have been output).

On checking what folders and files had been created on my hard drive after the process had terminated, I found that two folders had been created, being "Markers" and "Save".

In the Markers folder I found several files had been created, including one named "FoundUpd.txt". The contents of FoundUpd.txt were as follows =>

The following updates were found to be installed:

No files had been created in the Save folder.

In addition, I also found a file named "Report.txt" had been created in one of the other folders (sorry I forgot to note the name of the folder in which this file was stored). The contents of Report.txt were as follows =>

Report for Auto-Patcher v1.95 Preview Release 2 generated on Tuesday, 27 March 2007
- the time is now: 2:03am
- the most recent report is at the end of this log file.

The following list of updates were not found on this computer:

I then deleted the Markers and Save folders as well the Report.txt file, started AutoPatcher again and then tried to report missing updates / patches from one of the "Group" options. Again AutoPatcher appeared to terminate abnormally with exactly the same results as described earlier.

At this stage I'm not sure if the problem I have is simply the fact that I do not understand how to use AutoPatcher, or worse there's something very weird about my SE configuration?

For information, I currently have very few updates installed on my copy of Win 98SE. As I recall, I have the following updates installed:

Ie6SP1 (no security patches)
DirectX 9.0B (no security patches)
Windows Media Player 9.0 (no security patches)
MMC 1.2
XML 3.0

What you are reporting is a bug. When you choose to make a report, it should finish searching and present a text file for you to read. It should not terminate unexpectedly. Things you can do:

1) Inside the logs folder you should find a REPORT.TXT file that is created every time you make a report --- please find that file and post the EXACT contents to this thread. Also tell us what options you choose to make the report, and any info you can on when it terminates unexpectedly

2) Turn debugging on. In the Start Menu shortcut folder that is created when you install Auto-Patcher (AP) there is an icon that will turn it on for you. This will greatly help tell us WHERE the problem occurred. Start the report process as normal, then when it terminates, look for the DEBUG.TXT file this is created in the logs directory and post that to this thread.

3) try to only search through the first module - the stability hotfixes module - and see what the result is with that

More info: the save folder is where your module choices are stored. The markers folder is where all the files that AP needs to work each session are stored. If you use debugging, this information is stored in the log file. The FoundUpd.txt file is a temporary file that stores the list of updates found and at the very end, the list is copied to the main log file. Since you never make it to the end, this info never makes it to the Report.txt file.

unsure.gif The problem I have seems to be related to the amount of environment space I have configured on SE. By default, my SE configures 1504 bytes of environment space on bootup. If I insert the following shell command in config.sys "shell=c:\command.com c:\ /e:2048 /p", my environment space increases to 3088 bytes on bootup and the reporting system works perfectly! This does not make sense to me because I note that you dynamically allocate environment space within each batch file, and I would expect that you have sized the allocations appropriately?

Having got the reporting system to work successfully, I then proceeded to install the fixes in the Stability Module. Phase I of the installation appeared to proceed without any problems. However, when phase II of the installation started after the reboot, two error different error messages were displayed, viz.:

i) "out of environment space"

ii) "- the above title started to loop thru installations and so was not installed again"

Whilst I understood the first error message, the second one was too cryptic for me to comprehend.

As a consequence of receiving the two error messages, I was concerned that the some of the fixes in the Stability Module may not have been installed correctly, or not at all. I thus manually checked that each fix had been installed correctly, which to my surprise was the case.

I then got a little bolder and proceeded to install the MDAC updates and patches. Again phase I appeared to proceed without any problems, whilst phase II resulted in the same error messages that I got with the installation of the Stability Module patches being displayed after each reboot .

Compared to the Stability Module, it is a lot more difficult to manually confirm that the MDAC updates and patches have been installed correctly. Having looked at a report I generated using PC Mag's "Inctrl" tool, which showed "all" changes that had been made to my Registry as well to the files and folders on my hard drive as a result of the installation of MDAC, my gut feel is that the MDAC updates and patches have been installed correctly.

Fyi, to check my environment space, I also made use of another PC Mag tool, called "Strings" which you might find very useful. It contains +- 70 string type functions specifically designed for use in batch files. If you are interested in reviewing the functionality of either Inctrl or Strings, these two tools are freely available from many sites on the web - search for "inctrl5.zip" and "string25.zip" respectively.

No, both files are created when you turn debugging on. Can you not find DEBUG.TXT when you use debugging? This may still help us although i think the problem lies with your system rather than the program (although I plan to include any code that will fix this problem).

Are you saying you have specifically configured your OS to use a certain amount of environment space (ES)? Or are you reporting the default ES that Windows allocates... You are correct when you say that it doesn't make sense that you are having ES problems because I DO set the amount of space that I think is required to run the module. You can try adjusting these to see if it helps -- sorry, i didn't create a variable for this so you'll have to do them all manually.

The second error message is very likely related to the first one. When you start getting ES messages, this means that variables aren't being set properly and any code that uses the variables not being set will crash. Yep, i'm very sure about this one.

This makes perfect sense to me. The module installed properly, its just that when you rebooted, the ES problem returned.

I will check out those Strings you suggested ... I will also reply again when i've done some investigating ...

Whenever I try to install the patches (whether to all or selected patches), it will hang at DirectX.
It only occur in Full version.
Any idea how to overcome this issue?

2) Turn debugging on. In the Start Menu shortcut folder that is created when you install Auto-Patcher (AP) there is an icon that will turn it on for you. This will greatly help tell us WHERE the problem occurred. Start the report process as normal, then when it terminates, look for the DEBUG.TXT file this is created in the logs directory and post that to this thread.

sad.gif I tried this - the results were exactly the same as above in point 1) meaning that the file REPORT.TXT was created instead of DEBUG.TXT?

No, both files are created when you turn debugging on. Can you not find DEBUG.TXT when you use debugging? sad.gif DEBUG.TXT does not get generated; only REPORT.TXT gets generated. This may still help us although i think the problem lies with your system rather than the program (although I plan to include any code that will fix this problem).

QUOTE (Mazabuka @ Apr 3 2007, 02:42 AM) *
he problem I have seems to be related to the amount of environment space I have configured on SE.

Are you saying you have specifically configured your OS to use a certain amount of environment space (ES)? Or are you reporting the default ES that Windows allocates... sad.gifAccording to Strings, the default ES that Windows allocates on bootup is 1504 bytes. By including the Shell command "shell=c:\command.com c:\ /e:2048 /p" in config.sys, according to Strings my ES increased to 3088 bytes on bootup. You are correct when you say that it doesn't make sense that you are having ES problems because I DO set the amount of space that I think is required to run the module. You can try adjusting these to see if it helps -- sorry, i didn't create a variable for this so you'll have to do them all manually.

QUOTE
Having got the reporting system to work successfully, I then proceeded to install the fixes in the Stability Module. Phase I of the installation appeared to proceed without any problems. However, when phase II of the installation started after the reboot, two error different error messages were displayed, viz.:

i) "out of environment space"

ii) "- the above title started to loop thru installations and so was not installed again"

The second error message is very likely related to the first one. When you start getting ES messages, this means that variables aren't being set properly and any code that uses the variables not being set will crash. Yep, i'm very sure about this one.

QUOTE (Mazabuka @ Apr 3 2007, 02:42 AM) *
Whilst I understood the first error message, the second one was too cryptic for me to comprehend.

It means that the hotfix is trying to install for the second time when it should only need to install once.

Yeah, but the updates are for win98se only.

Ok.. first of all, great program and as i looked over all the posts, alot of effort and work has gone into this project.. I am very happy with this because in this day and age you don't see that very often anymore..
Now on to the good stuff (hehe).. i just finished installing it with no issues to report.. i actually use win xp pro, but am also using Virtual PC 2007 with win 98 and at first could not get the internet function to work so i dl'd this patcher due to not finding anything else available.. took all of 10 min to dl (i have a very fast connection) and put it on my VM and installed it.. I have to say it is very easy to use and runs great.. the main reason i even started using 98 again was due to a game of mine would not run no matter what i did with XP.. (if wondering what game, Dungeon Keeper 2) i know that 98 is going to go the way of most good intentions soon and am glad that some people decided to keep the update progress of it alive and running due to some people still use it for various things.. great work and keep it up.. thumbup.gif wub.gif

welcome.gif Just installed AutoPatcher 1.95 PR2 (March 20th, 2007) from SoftPaedia, took best part of an hour even using FlashGet! But the programme ... ingenious, fascinating!

As you know it includes two options for WinUpdate Fix. With the first it was rapidly hunting or looping between V4 and V6. With the second it just brought me back to the 'Administrators Only' screen. Not to worry ..... wacko.gif

(Post scriptum. An incidental effect of installing AutoPatcher is that it has installed WM9 properly for the first time in months, previously WM9 was not tenable on this machine because trying to use it just froze up Desktop every time.)

I'm having problems resunming the Auto-Patcher download from Softpedia. (I'm on DIALUP; connection time limit of 90 min.)
Is there another way/place to get it?

Thanks.

Does auto-patcher run on win98Se that has had win98 Lite applied? I tried it on such a PC yesterday. It unpacked all the files ok. When I ran the batch, a DOS box appeared for a fraction of a second and then the batch exited. No error messages or logs or anything.

hey soporific, Autopatcher is a great piece of work - thanks for that!

i've had some troubles with it and wonder if anyone can help...

- i recently revived an old laptop (toshiba satellite 4030 cdt - celeron, 128 mb ram) with a new HDD and a fresh install of win98se - i started out with win98 first edition, but when i tried to install win98se over it, the install failed. so, i removed windows completely from the hard drive and installed win98se from scratch. then i downloaded autopatcher ver 1.95. the first thing i did was run the report to see what was missing. the report said that 142 (of the total 178) patches/hotfixes/etc. were not installed. i assume the rest were included as part of win98se??

- i configured autopatcher to install nearly all of the available fixes. after i ran it, i reran the report, and it showed 108 fixes were not installed, and 40 fixes were successfully installed (108+40=148 vs. 142 reported by the log - math doesn't quite add up here ??). i've since done some manual installs to get IE up to 6.0 SP1 and fix the windows update bug.

- i was disappointed to see that the win98-to-me update didn't install sad.gif

- of the fixes that WERE installed, WinMP 9 doesn't work (double click on icon, nothing happens).

my main questions are:
1. should i run autopatcher again?
2. how do i fix the WinMP 9 install?
3. how do i get it to install the missing patches, especially the win98-to-me?
4. should i uninstall autopatcher, reinstall and rerun?
5. will autopatcher 1.96 address these issues?

thanks in advance for any help/advice!

ps - the log file is posted below - remember the 1st log report is BEFORE i ran autopatcher, the 2nd one is after...

- I assume there's nothing to worry about the 3 "missing updates"?

- The Win 98SE version now reads 4.90.3000A ???

- The "Win98-to-Me module" didn't do anything??? How can I tell?

- WU_fix_v1.21.zip fixed the "Mac" problem. According to Windows update, I'm missing these 3 critical updates:
KB916281 KB837009 (installed, according to A-P) and KB891711 (covered by U891711, I assume ???)

- There are newer versions of DirectX 9. Are they compatible with 98SE?

Overall, Auto-Patcher is an impressive piece of work. Bravo!

Any other tweaks, fixes, patches etc. I should check out? :-)

i've had some troubles with it and wonder if anyone can help...

* I am going to completely re-do Win98-to-Me for v1.96 -- too many people are now reporting problems, and its the BEST single update you can apply. I will release the package as soon as its finished so all those that had problems will be able to finally install it --- it will be packaged as a stand-alone install which will then be incorporated into Auto-Patcher.

* Running Auto-Patcher again shouldn't cause any problems that it didn't cause the first time. It MAY install an update it didn't previously but that is normal as some updates aren't available until others are installed.

* v1.96 will try to address all reported issues

* Use the Windows Update (WU) menu option from the Auto-Patcher main menu and it will give more information about which updates WU falsely reports about. You are correct, you don't need to worry about those.

* 4.90.3000A means you have installed the Win98-to-Me module !! - things that should be changed: the My Computer icon, the default color of the desktop background with no wallpaper selected, and most importantly, your computer should be 'zippier' --- ie faster and more responsive!

* Those 3 'missing' updates are false alarms. The reason is you have installed the unofficial updates that are more recent than the official ones. WU doesn't like this ...

This is just an initial reply, I will investigate further and get back to both of you

hi all

have been using 98se for a long time and i have to say its my favourite M$ OS sure newer systems have there advantages but there just so dam bloated and slow

this and gapes unofficial 98se service pack are an absolute god send coz with M$ ending support its almost impossible to keep 98se updated hell even before M$ ended support it was still really hard to know if your system was fully patched

with 98lite to remove superfluous functions I don't need gapes unofficial 98se service pack and this to patch anything that doesn't cover I can now be confident that my old 98se box is as patched and current as it can possibly be

Outstanding Job keep up the excellent work I shall be watching this one closely

just a quick question

i would like to create the ultimate customised hybrid 98se system for this I use 98 Lite and 98 to ME

my question is what order would I have to do things obviously I'd install 98se first with 98lite and I'd remove all the excess garbage and update things like IE to there current versions but what would i do then would i install Gapes pack then run the autopatcher and then run 98 to ME ?? and also is there a 98 to ME autopatcher that will patch any problems introduced by newer ME files ???

also a further though what about creating the ultimate 98 se update and customization package

that combines 98lite gapes package the autopatcher and 98 to ME and a 98 to ME autopatcher to deal with any problems introduced by newer ME file in to one package ???

that way anyone like me that wanted to create the ultimate hybrid system could do so easily safe in the knowledge that everything had been done correctly

i realise this may not be possible for a lot of reasons but though i'd ask anyway

As I had not checked the windows update site for ages, I decided to try it today. I got the "You must have a MacIntosh" message. I re-ran Autopatcher v1.95, and then I went to the manual installs folder and ran the WU-FIX (both methods). Although the hotfix worked previously, I now still seem to be getting the "MacIntosh" message. Has Microsoft managed to outmanouver the hotfix?

I would run Auto-Patcher first if you're going to install other service packs, and i wouldn't use 98 lite ... for these reasons:

1) These days, hard disk space is soooo not a problem so having some excess junk you're never going to use is preferable to possibly getting rid of files that the OS might complain about later. Of course if you're sure 98 lite won't ever interfere with anything then fine, i don't know enough about it. I'm a cat's whisker away from releasing a good alternative to re-installing with 98 lite try the unattended boot CD instead. Create a CD that will have the OS the way you want it after a re-install EXACTLY the way you want it --- updates, patches, tweaks, the works. It will be released within 24 hours promise, i'm just writing all the documentation now.

2) Auto-Patcher is simply an automatic hotfix and system component installer. You can select which ones you want, and forget about the rest. This will get your PC to the point that you can then further optimize and tweak. So i'd do use this one first. Even if it's just to run one module. Then i'd do 98 to ME and then maybe the revolutions pack. Gape's pack could also be squeezed in there somewhere, although i think the first 3 will have all of Gape's stuff covered.

jack, it's not so much what you have installed, more like what mood Microsoft servers are in for that day. You know, a bit of humidity, a bit of chilly dampness and they just down tools! They go on strike! This is my new conclusion based upon lots of "tea leaves" readings of my morning extra strength Dilmah. rolleyes.gif

Check out v 1.21, there's a new fix included which worked for at least one person (as well as me) when the first 2 didn't work. It's funny, if i was to count up the number of times i used the fixes and which one worked for me, they are all about even right now, although the modified icon on the desktop tweak (no 3) is starting to pull ahead.

Great stuff and nice that you make it tell us what it is doing!

Did a clean install of Win98SE, switched the 48BITLBA file manually in DOS as it won't boot at all during installation without it (the Win98SE partition starts past the 137GB point so Windows throws up random errors on boot trying to guess what is wrong lol), sorted out enough drivers etc to get it working and then ran Auto Patcher (Full Version) v1.95.PR2 (which I think is still the latest).

The patcher decided my 48BITLBA was newer (there was a later version on the forum than the one included).

One tip that might be worth putting in a readme file is that the patcher rebooted the OS 20 times on that first run. Might be a good idea to warn multi-booters to set the default to Win98SE partition for the duration before they start!

It works so well and tells you everything. Thanks!

Now for the questions:

1. dotNET Framework: It didn't install and I couldn't find it on the menus. I installed it from a download I had (with all the other official Windows 98SE updates from way back when they cast it adrift). Did I do something wrong?

2. Win98 to Me: After all the updates were completed and I ran the patcher to check there was nothing I had missed, I tried Win98 to Me. I felt some trepidation about this as I had once bought a HP box with WinMe on it when that was the latest thing and before I was building my own boxes and I HATED WinMe which is why I got my own Win98SE. Anyway, I am not sure I see what the difference is after Win98 to Me was installed but I haven't played with it much. One thing I DO know is that it is now forcing me to have web-type folders whenever I use Explorer to see C:\Windows or C:\Program Files. I thought we could tweak that out. (I always have .3 extensions showing for ALL files which should be the standard anyway and I always have hidden and system files/directories showing in Explorer - I figure if I can write my own partition table, I can avoid messing a few system files lol.

Any ideas how to tweak those folders from doing that? I disable all web folders etc and tell it to make all folders like that, but those two insist on WinMe'ing!

What other Microsoft "forced on you" silliness does Win98 to Me put back in? If there is much, I'll uninstall it. But it was written so well, I'd like to use it! Can you tell me what advantage it has for me?

3. Windows Update: I am confused. Why would you want to connect to the Windows Update site when running Win98SE? Are they still providing any new files that we need on top of the unofficial ones here?

Thanks.

The patcher decided my 48BITLBA was newer (there was a later version on the forum than the one included) ...... One tip that might be worth putting in a readme file is that the patcher rebooted the OS 20 times on that first run. Might be a good idea to warn multi-booters to set the default to Win98SE partition for the duration before they start!

Oops, i didn't realise there was a newer version --- i should update it, hey ... and thanks for the tip, yes, good idea.

1. dotNET Framework: It didn't install and I couldn't find it on the menus. I installed it from a download I had (with all the other official Windows 98SE updates from way back when they cast it adrift). Did I do something wrong?

Which version of dotNET Framework are you talking about, and which version of Auto-Patcher are you using, FULL or LITE? Framework 1.1 isn't included, and Framework 2 is in the Optional components module. Framework 2 isn't included in LITE.

I also hate WinMe with a passion -- it's on many lists of the worst technology products of all time. But .... some of the files are simply optimizations and the ones i've included are mainly that as opposed to completely alien to Win98. Hey, i have gone out on a limb and said it was the single best update to install and for good reason!

Anyway, I am not sure I see what the difference is after Win98 to Me was installed but I haven't played with it much. One thing I DO know is that it is now forcing me to have web-type folders whenever I use Explorer to see C:\Windows or C:\Program Files.

No, whats missing is the menu entry that clicks web folders on and off. If you go into folder options, there right in front of you in the general tab is the option to use classic folders. I admit to not having noticed before! but no problem ...

What other Microsoft "forced on you" silliness does Win98 to Me put back in? If there is much, I'll uninstall it. But it was written so well, I'd like to use it! Can you tell me what advantage it has for me?
There's no other limitations as far as i know. You should be aware that MDGx actually doesn't recommend installing EXPLORER.EXE without a few more 'companion' files but in my experience it has NEVER caused a problem with incompatibility. What are the benefits? Well, i can't say anything for the impact of USER.EXE and USER32.DLL but i can say that adding EXPLORER.EXE just makes all file operations much quicker. It's VERY obvious that the WinME version of EXPLORER has optimizations that kick butt over the Win98 version. I can't really be anymore scientific than say that adding those 3 files just seems to make the system hold together better. Eveything seems faster, especially muti-tasking. I think there's probably some I/O optimizations that just generally means things across the board will be faster. Maybe someone else can be more specific.

3. Windows Update: I am confused. Why would you want to connect to the Windows Update site when running Win98SE? Are they still providing any new files that we need on top of the unofficial ones here?

Well, this project has been around for longer than Microsoft ending support and i've only just got out of the habit of comparing my new re-install with what Windows Update reckons so sorry for the confusion, there is no reason to need its inclusion, but i would assume that there are others who aren't yet out of the habit i describe above so i've kept it in.

Soporific, I would just like to mention that I am installing a mini-site for you on the space I have donated to your cause. Hope you can put this to good use (e.g. placing more complete instructions, perhaps listing what has been updated etc). I will send you the login information soon.

BTW, what multi-booter do you use?

I write my own partition table using Ranish Partition Manager.

I use XOSL (the original version before it went to sourceforge) to multi-boot - it is a really nice way to boot ANYTHING (for Linux I point XOSL at GRUB but only because the distro I have uses GRUB as standard and I don't boot anything but those kernels from it).

I was lucky that I couldn't BOOT into Win98SE without using msconfig to use real mode disk access because my Win98SE partition STARTED above the 137GB limit. (Real mode didn't slow it down much because disks are fast nowadays.) Once I found Enable48BITLBA, I did the manual exchange of files in DOS. You might want to include a warning though - users who CAN boot Win98SE without real mode need to know they MUST swap the PDR file if they are accessing disks >137GB or they will seriously mess up their data when it wraps around. Can your batchfile check the disk size and "force" that update?

Version 2. Full version. I am thinking of starting again (new install of OS, then autopatch) so I will check it out before I come back on that. Anything you want me to try out if I do that?

I do several things as standard when I reinstall Win98SE. Show file extensions, system/hidden files, use classic folders, apply this to all folders. TweakUI to not allow web content on desktop etc etc. A
