And... in the Lite version DX9.0c is packed and was "not found" during the scan. It must be "unRar'd" into the appropriate folder the same way as with the Full version to be found/installed.

Last but not least, 4DOS is ONLY a problem due to
(1) not using "comspec" throughout (occasional usage of COMMAND.COM instead)
(2) many places in code do not issue ">nul" at the end of commands (e.g. DEL, DIR, etc)
Otherwise, the existing BAT files DO function EXACTLY as originally intended.

Side note: Uninstall does not delete ALL files/folders!

Oops! I'm sooo disorganized. I'll fix all the bugs for the next version. Thanks for the tips re the code -- i will do as you suggest, they are all great suggestions ... my problem is too many fingers in too many pies and i'm getting a bit erratic and missing good things to work on and include. Please keep bugging me and suggesting stuff, its all good.

I truly wish i knew about 4DOS at the very start. A lot of the structure of the code is based upon NOT having easy FOR-NEXT loops and all the rest, and i'm not too confident about junking large parts of the code in order to make use of the new functions, but from what you're telling me, its not too much work to make it compatible -- the COMMAND.COMs can be easily converted to %COMSPEC%s and i can go around and add all the >nul s to the one's that are missing so if that's all ... are you sure the other utilities in \bin will work in 4DOS?

re: your edit ... the search & report function on the initial menu page was designed to use the default settings, if the user wants to search for everything (including stuff that is weird and they probably won't be interested in) then they can easily set that up in the modules section and start the report from there. I thought the default search was more useful being accessible from the first page.

re: the report count problem -- i think i lost you somewhere, i'm still in the dark about what the problem is! please enlighten this doddering old fool....

re: the uninstaller doesn't delete all the files, yep, there's some still left behind, but they should all only be user created files that they might want to keep. The main thing for me is that the bulk of the 241 MB are deleted --- although i will admit actually trying to get my uninstaller to do a full delete but to no avail. I will try again..

If I choose any option, I get a Box, labelled START_ME, with the following message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated."

When I click on details, I get the following:

Fault Location 00C9: 0E57
Interrupts in service: None

Can anyone help me please??

Well, you did ask nicely so OK... let's see if we can't get some auto-patchin' happenin'.

1) worst-case scenario: you can always manually install the updates you need. All the files are in \files\hotfixes and it should be reasonably obvious how to start the installations - for most of them just double-click each file. If you visit this list you'll be able to tell which file is which due to the system i used of naming all the hotfixes by their knowledge base article number.

2) please check that your hardware is functioning properly - ie a corrupted hard drive could possibly cause the message you've seen, as will bad RAM memory. THe best tool in my opinion is the Ultimate Boot CD (just google for it) which has all the hardware tools under the sun. The message does include the word 'Fault' in it, which suggests a problematic hardware component. I have included lots of error-checking into the program and the message you are getting is not a case i've coded for --- it's not a 'missing file' type error, it's a 'the computer is trying to do something it can't and it's complaining about it' type error.

3) just double-checking: every single option (from the list of options from A - W) gives that result? That tells me quite a bit, if so.

4) can you give me a list of the hardware specs: CPU, chipset on m/b, amount of RAM, hard disk configuration, & amount of hard disk space, should do it.

One reply at a time (separate replies, each post; this one for irishpancake...):

I agree that the problem sounds like hardware. The code in AP (after cursory inspection) does not do anything strange to cause this type of error.

Vague recollections of the nature of this type of error, in particular memory. From what I can find, an XPS-D300 is a 300mhz PII with varying amounts of RAM. And, unfortunately, Win98 is never too clear on indicating that Hardware is the problem when this format of message is issued. The processor is MORE than sufficient and just checked a lowly 16MB ram for running AP "Scan For Missing" and it did NOT fail, although you should realize that Win98 really ought to have a minimum of 64MB to run efficiently; 32 is the specified minimum so anything between would be sufficient (although the more the better).

A link to Your PC (generic Dxx series specs, etc):
http://lyberty.com/tech/sysspecs/dell_xps_d300.html

I will tell you that during building one of my old PC's that I had similar problems with one of my 32MB (size being irrelevant) sticks. Windows just kept going "south" (a slang loosely meaning ge-fudged and giving up). SO... I downloaded one particular piece of software, MEMTEST86, and ran it. Sure enough, the problem was memory. After swapping the bad stick, everything was fine.

As per soporific's suggestion about the Ultimate Boot CD, I must agree. However, having Dial-Up, I might suggest just getting Memtest86 (listed on the indicated site) and run it. It WILL tell you if a stick is bad. If you have more than one stick, remove the indicated bad stick (if one is bad), swap the remaining stick(s) into the appropriate slots and try again. Also, just for funzies, just try removing/reinserting (reseating) the sticks.

The only other thing I can imagine is that you somehow have a corrupt CHOICE.COM located in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM". It can be re-extracted from the WIN98_25.CAB (ref. LAYOUT1.INF found in PRECOPY2.CAB also found in C:\WINDOWS\INF). Note also that a bad stick of memory may possibly allow installation of the OS, but will corrupt some modules during the install.

"We might also provide PC support as appropriate and as possible within the context; besides, we just LOVE to work on computers!" (although it may be better to PM back-and-forth if the indications become hardware-related) biggrin.gif

Jeez, all I wanted was to fully update these old PC-gifties... How did I get wrapped around the axle with AP (a rhetorical question)? Just brain-dead, I guess wacko.gif !

Lastly (re: 4DOS), if you REALLY want to, go ahead and mod the BAT files as appropriate. You can flip/flop between DOS7 and 4DOS simply by renaming the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS back-and-forth then rebooting. 4DOS only "replaces" the shell with equivalent DOS6x/7x functionality plus additional features. Note, however that the output of some (FEW) commands (eg DIR) will be formatted differently and will definitely cause code problems if they depend on a specific format (eg "DIR x >dir.txt"/"NSET var from dir.txt" sequence). This COULD be worked around by simply re-checking which shell is being used OR using a different method (eg VBS). OTHERWISE, don't bother, just keep us all posted as to any fixes, etc., and I will graciously accept responsibility for the appropriate mods ("personal use", remember?) and keep a Very Simple Post back to you as to my progress as a "collaborative effort". If I am successful (The Train That Could), I will be more that happy to pass the modded files back to you for your approval. Also, a nice thing would be to post link(s) to a separate MODS-Only file (as you used to do) so I might be able to use my Comparator to isolate any specific changes.

Apologies for long explanations (a personality fault)... Would (in some cases) it be better to PM back-and-forth? Perhaps direct e-mail instead (how does that work?)...

Edit: edited for content... see next post...

If you're just using Ethernet Cable or DSL internet without needing to logon to networks and such, then even though Client For Microsoft Networks is there and needed for the ethernet driver you do not need to login to Windows with it.

In the Network control panel switch the drop down for login to Windows Login. You'll no longer get the login dialog box on Startup but you'll still be connected. Most ISP's don't require you to login.

I set mine up with Windows Login and it works fine.

OK, I just did a clean install of Win98SE and then AutoPatched it before doing anything else. Some thoughts/questions....

1. Another tip for people who want to run the patcher and not get bother in the hour of rebooting. In addition to multi-booters setting the Win98SE partition as default, remind people they need to go into Networking and change the Primary Logon to Windows Logon instead of Network Logon. Otherwise, at the first reboot, it will stop at the Network logon even if they haven't used a password. (Can you tweak that when the autopatcher starts?)

2. TweakUI installs without installing it's two help files (tweakui.cnt and tweakui.hlp) in the Windows\Help directory. It may be something weird about my icons, but your tweakui.exe is showing as a RAR file whereas the Microsoft download is a ZIP file. Actually, you could include the contents uncompressed as it contains 4 files (tweakui .cnt .cpl .hlp and .inf) totalling ONLY 162KB and the INF will install it without trouble! Just a thought. (For those missing the help files, just unpack them and put them in the Windows\Help directory.

3. After patching today, I tried Windows Update and it reported 2 criticals and 38 Win98/Win98SE updates.

a. The criticals are:
  • Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB916281)
  • Security Update for Windows 98 (KB891711)
b. The Win98/Win98SE include:
  • 34 multi-language updates plus the Euro tool (not needed)
  • Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1
  • Windows Critical Update Notification 4.0
  • Agent 2.0
So do I need any of them (apart from language/Euro)? I included .NET version 2.0 in the autopatch and it is showing on the uninstall list so I don't see why 1.1 showed up - is that needed for some strange backwards compatibility thing? Presumably the Critical Update thing is long past doing anything useful.

What about the Critical Updates? Haven't they been superceded by others in the patcher?

Hope the tips help and thanks for any answers

(Note: the 98toMe web folder thing needed a close and restart of Explorer after switching off Web Folders BEFORE browsing to the Windows or Program Files directories otherwise they were turned back on - strange WinMe thing I think)

a. The criticals are:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB916281)
Security Update for Windows 98 (KB891711)
I had pointed this out before. Both of the applied patches from AP are:
-Unofficial KB925454 is NEWER than KB916281 (and contains XPSP2 modules)
p.s. per soporific:
QUOTE
kb925454 - 2006 Dec - I - Unofficial Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 sp1 - superceeded by kb928090
ALSO XPSP2; maybe just not set in place yet...
-The Unofficial U891711 version has NEWER versions (WHERE FROM?)
Theoretically, these messages could be ignored, but in the interest of NOT appearing, the OFFICIAL ones could be installed BEFORE the unofficial ones (within the installation sequence) OR the appropriate INF info could be installed (via REG files).
QUOTE
b. The Win98/Win98SE include:
34 multi-language updates plus the Euro tool (not needed)
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1
Windows Critical Update Notification 4.0
Agent 2.0
-The 34 multi-language updates are already contained in the IE6SP1 module. Just go to Add/Remove, select IE6SP1, and add them in, ONLY if you need/want them. If you install Auto-Language Select instead and browse to a non-english page, it SHOULD automatically install from the IE6 folder (provided that you leave it on your HDD. SO it's irrelevant.
-Euro tool might be in the Optional Components section of AP... it IS in the Lite version (have yet to re-test AP Full). Yep, irrelevant!
-Microsoft .NET 1.1 is unnecessary as you have installed .NET 2.0. Apparently, MS neglects to detect that you already HAVE the latest. This could also be circumvented (maybe) by a REG file, since installing .NET 2.0 over top of .NET 1.1 clears the .NET 1.1 folders out. BTW, the latest MSN Messenger REQUIRES .NET 2.0 (go figger)!
-Notification... has been deemed irrelevant. I THINK it only applies to Windows OS, but MAY apply to non-Windows components. THAT is why a "WU fix" has been implemented. You WILL need any IE6 updates that may come, since it is STILL SUPPORTED! Easier to use WU occasionally than to go and search MS.COM (in the IE6 section).
-MS-Agent. You can get this from MS if you want. I have it. It's sole purpose is to allow silly stuff like MS-Merlin to work. Just a nifty display thingy that makes "floating" screen overlays that follow your mouse cursor. Irrelevant... BUT go to MS.COM and do a search; there you will find more info.

Whenever "the bossman" has time, perhaps he can re-browse this forum and put together a real nice HELP file. MS provides free software to create/edit .CHM files. OR maybe someone else with time on their hands...

Bottom line... it's all good!

Silly me not remembering that IE6 has to live on with MS support indefinitely as way too many users (especially XP users) won't upgrade to IE7 for a variety of reasons many of which are unmentionable lol

Thanks for all the replies, submix AND SO QUICK TOO biggrin.gif

I only mentioned the languages/Euro and other stuff for completeness. All these and anything else I immediately eliminate from showing again by using the Configure Windows Update (or is it Preferences? or Options? it's on the left hand side of the webpage anyway lol). If anyone hasn't ever checked that out, do it now - you have to do it again if you reinstall, but it is only clearing some checkboxes.

Do we need a sticky which shows the superceded updates still being "offered" by Windows Update after using the Autopatcher (especially KB type with so many numbers to check and match lol) or did I miss that?

Now then, I wonder if that Autopatcher could automatically make the expandable Control Panel on the Start Menu instead of me doing it manually when I first install Win98SE? lol (Dunno what I mean? Well, after TweakUI is in, disable "Shortcut to" on the shortcut creations. Then create a folder in Start Menu called "Control Panel". Then open Control Panel, select all items and drag them into the new folder and create shortcuts. Done.)

Thanks again.

briton:

No problem... Yeah, maybe the Start-Menu version of WU would be the way to go (just replace it via the "WU Fix" install. Appears the ONLY difference in the shortcut is that the original does NOT have a "Start In Folder" value (stuff is set in the registry...).

Superceded stuff is already listed in soporific's "Complete List" forum. He's obviously a busy puppy and hasn't gotten around to it. And as a reminder (see my previous post), those noted are UN-official fixes that MS does NOT recognize. Hence, my suggestion to somehow "fix" it so they will not show, although this may depend on some kind of notification for the "unofficial" fixes.

Mind if I jump in?

I like opening the Control Panel in the traditional way and didn't like it when I tried having the links all in the Start Menu.

I also would not like that Automatic Windows Update thing. I don't want a thing from Windows Update since so many of those are broken to start with. Ya think they'll try to carefully design Internet Explorer 6 updates so they work on 98SE at this point? They'll more likely to design them to destroy Windows 98SE so folks will get frustrated and buy XP or Vista. Heck, that's what I would do! Business is dog eat dog, and Redmond wants upgrades that give them cash. I barely trust WU on XP, preferring the RyanVM upgrade pack approach. Vista, well for now we need them but that's okay since that's where the improvements will show up from now on.

We'd be much better off letting Windows Update stay broken on 98 so folks won't install anything from it. Updates from there would be more likely to break things than help. We have folks here who tear into new Internet Explorer updates and make them compatible and just as importantly make them work on 9x systems.

So, less tinkering with how our Start Menu works and more making sure that we're getting all the necessary updates is what I suggest. There are other projects that deal with GUI changes.

I m desperately awaiting for Autr-Patcher windows 98SE 1.96 version cause i didnt like the 1.95 version of it,and wants the new version wont require frequent RESTARTS. Thank You.KEEP THE GOOD WORK. thumbup.gif
soporific
OK, the big news is i'm now making my final run towards a v1.96 release. There's been enough feedback about needed changes for me to be able to release a substantially different version to 1.95 to make it worthwhile.

re: Windows Update and the reported hotfixes that are 'missing' from your computer: OK, first, you should be using the menu option within Auto-Patcher to access Windows Update. Why? Because of the info that is contained within that option that answers most of the current outstanding questions about this. Briton, i don't think you've used that menu option yet in AP. Please do so ASAP just so you can read what's there. If you have further questions, then ask. Second, with every passing month, WU becomes more irrelevant. Anyone who's used the site more than a few times knows what WU is going to say about what's missing. And we also know it's never going to ever change again while we can access the **** thing. So after countless times using AP to patch a test Win98 machine, i think v1.95 gets them all installed, and the 2 reported updates still missing are definitely accounted for. So the moral of this point is: lets just forget about WU shall we? It's going to be a hard habit to break, but break it we must.

re: the 10 to 20 reboots the program goes through before finishing: yes, i will add messages about the fact that the program reboots so often. I am, however, going to try to cut them down a bit more. I can do the entire contents of AP in just 4 reboots when i do it with the UBCD but that's different. But i reckon i could maybe cut them down by half. So, i'm on the case. I'll also see if I can't make the change from 'Network logon' to 'Primary logon' by code as well --- if anyone knows how, please say something and save me some time.

re: the Control Panel tweak: i like it!! But as i said, it's a tweak and so needs to be packaged as such. I can put it on my list of things to do, but if someone else wants to knock this one over, be my guest. Scratch that, i've totall cheated by just copying all the shortcuts from my test machine and packaging them into a sfx file that extracts to %windir%\STARTM~1\Control Panel which does exactly the same job. Still its a hack so if someone can do better, be my guest.

re: TweakUI help files: -- yep i'm responsible for them missing, it's because it's not fully unattended the way it comes out of the box. Now i have super INF making powers, i will restore the missing files, solve the non-silent problem, and save the world from capitalism. No sweat. Seriously, i will at least get the help files back, and i've just about got capitalism licked, but i was probably off my rocker about actually getting TweakUI to just silently install.

re: a help file for AP: --- i think i'd try to make it a GUI interface before trying for a nice GUI help file. Still, not a bad idea.

there's no more "re:"s --- if i missed something, speak up.

The following is already in the latest version of the UBCD - (autopatch.txt in the root directory) but here it is in all its glory... the next version of Auto-Patcher will actually be substantially different, the following is for v1.95 files. You will also want to include the Win98toME Standalone hotfix that i've created (see the thread for it) - it belongs in [List15]

PS - let me say that watching Windows 98 setup 'swallow' all the updates you apply with this method really made me amazed that it took them all. Especially when desktop1.bat is running (this is after the desktop loads for the first time) ... it does soooo many, especially if you also pack in 3rd party apps like i do .. then it finally reboots (about 15 mins later!) and then the reboot goes on forever to the point you think something is wrong, but no, finally the desktop loads and then desktop2.bat runs and it does it all over again !! And then its all finished. I installed Auto-Patcher and ran the report and all the updates were found. The first time i checked i was amazed. I was certain that the OS had simply been overwhelmed by all the updates that it didn't do some. I now look at Windows 98 with a little more respect than i did before. This is what made me realise than i was probably being over-cautious with all the reboots in Auto-Patcher. Hence my pledge to cut the number in half.

CODE

SubMix8c:
question: were you saying that we couldn't use long file names right the way thru AutoPatcher code without pulling it from a text file? The way to pass long filenames in variables, you just put them in quotes, and then strip the quotes off when they are imported into the next bat file. .. i set it up to do this, i just wasn't grabbing the long version. Thanks for pushing that code until i accepted it. It looks much nicer having the full path without any sign of the ugliness of a squiggle character with a 1 after it.

SubMix8c:
question: were you saying that we couldn't use long file names...
Perhaps there was an "oddity" in the "4DOS" version I was "working on" (a previous AP version) that caused passed variables to come out wrong ("long path"); perhaps it was simply a "bug" in the previous (now fixed...). It's just a vague memory now, as the latest AP seems to be ok. Will address 4DOS some other time via direct PM (STILL, in my opinion, a wonderful tool), since I prefer to "mod" a stable/nearly-unchanging version. Will wait for v1.96. (I may be "fixated" on this since it has been a long time since I have coded; Mainframe programming languages and scripts are SO much easier to code, including ye olde Assembly Language).

ALL: DO NOT bother your heads with "4DOS"; irrelevant for your purpose unless you are interested in using it... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

re: Windows Update and the reported hotfixes...
Ok, agreed. However, this will mean that IF you desire a stable, fully-patched Win98SE... "Watch This Space" (including MGDx's/et-al's "Unofficial Patches". It appears that any "fixes" post-July-2006 will NOT appear in WU (although the "unofficial" DO work; ref. the latest "unofficial" DX9 and IE6SP1-Cumulative), so utilizing it is probably no more than an exercise in confirming what AP (and any "unofficial") have provided; may as well DELETE WU from the START menu (since it doesn't work ennyhoo!).

Continuing...
Preliminary test of AP Full vs Lite versions appears to be consistent (re: "Not In Lite Version"), including the Install results (per the "default" installs). I had first run a Report to check against the previous Lite "Default Install", then did a Full "Default Install".

Results: DX9 was "upgraded", WMP7 Legacy Files were installed, and TTFPAK was installed. Methinks I have the gist of the difference 'twixt Default/Master-Menu and Full/Menu-1 (consistent methodology for both Full and Lite versions).

However, Unicows just REFUSES to install! I think this was pointed out somewhere else in this thread and a proposed "fix" suggested (renames, then copy, etc etc). Maybe Windows is USING these files and will not let you just "overwrite" them (kinda like XP and the "dllcache" deal...).

QUOTE
I have included a tweaks section...
I have noticed that many "default" installs might be categorized as "optional" (e.g. ADDREMOV). In my definition of "default", it should ONLY include that which is NECESSARY for a Fully Patched installation (i.e. a truly Lite version, including 98->ME stability), no frills at all. How small then (example: if you do NOT use MSN Messenger or do NOT desire to get "MS Evaluation Software", then you have no need for .NET Framework)? Shoot me (metaphorically speaking, of course) for suggesting such an idea...

MDGx welcome.gif :

Reference to "who did this patch?" was to ADDREMOV... now I know. AND apparently at least one other "fix" was done by an anonymous doner (B. Gates???). Just uncomfortable with not knowing, that's all... Guess I should spend more time in the Complete-List and your Hotfix-Patches threads.

Maybe links/references directly in an "AP Help" function would clarify (later, of course, after the GOOD work is done). This way, anyone in the "outer worlds" would also know who to credit this stuff to...

Hi Folks
I'm trying to follow the instructions for Release 4.5 UBCD and wonder is there a file named autopatcher v1.6 ready for download yet. I'm quickly losing confidence that I'm going to get it right the first time, or 2nd etc. Since my hard drive is empty anyway, can I just transfer everything there and somehow pretend it is a CD similar to the circumstance where people put the W98SE right onto their hard drive to install. Then I won't feel bad about wasting CDs.

LL028 welcome.gif :

edit: This has been edited for content (now irrelevant)...

Not so sure it can be done with an "empty" HDD so it "looks" like a CD-ROM... (remainder truncated)

OR (simpler).... just get some CD-RW's; they can be re-formatted and re-written up to (theoretically) 99 times! If you have a CD-burner, it had BETTER be able to burn RW's, or else it must be an ancient prototype!! thumbup.gif

No such thing as AP-v1.6; you must mean v1.96 (not ready yet). AP-v1.95 PR2 is good enough for your intent... use it's contents with confidence. (p.s. you must install it just be able to copy the required UBCD files PER UBCD INSTRUCTIONS.) The "Lite" version will probably be sufficient...

(p.s.-p.s. Maybe start a new "help me, I'm new at this" thread...)
OOPS, my bad, you already have a thread: How do I... Stay in that thread from now on; Any takers? the lady needs help... could take a while...
Go BACK to here (UBCD main page) and re-read the instructions. You do NOT need a second CD-rom in primary computer; follow "un-zipped" instructions, then my above suggestions/comments whistling.gif

Briton, i don't think you've used that menu option yet in AP. Please do so ASAP just so you can read what's there.

Got it. Sorry!

So the moral of this point is: lets just forget about WU shall we? It's going to be a hard habit to break, but break it we must.
Hear! Hear! (I HAD broken the habit - this site made me try it again lol)

So, i'm on the case. I'll also see if I can't make the change from 'Network logon' to 'Primary logon' by code as well --- if anyone knows how, please say something and save me some time.

TweakUI does it so there is a simple reg tweak. I'll check if there is an easier way.

EDIT: As far as I can see, when you switch the Primary Logon from "Client for Microsoft Networks" to "Windows Logon" the following change is made in the Registry:

HKLM\Network\Logon
"PrimaryProvider"="Microsoft Network"

changed to:
"PrimaryProvider"=""

I can't tell if there is any other change - any ideas anyone? It being Win98SE and not Vista or XP, it wouldn't surprise me if it were that simple!
END EDIT!

USB Stick or CD R/W seem to be good ways to do this stuff. Every time I decide to reinstall Win98SE, I find the hardware has changed so much I need to put some new drivers on the CD anyway (I make my own not having been converted to any of the universally brilliant CDs yet lol).

Just an idea. (A CD R/W lasts a LONG time if you look after it - I have one Linux type CD R/W which I can see through which still works OK - although I have actually replaced it now lol)

My 1GB Boot USB Stick keeps getting rewritten from hard disk for all sorts of installs but it can be tricky getting it to work for some CD type things.

SubMix8c, i made all the changes to the code as i said i would, but it looks like there's gotta be quite a bit more. I had to fix quite a few things just to get to the first menu, and these were all by-pass hacks. I had turned off the 4DOS message in the first bat file, but i've turned it back on! You're going to have to present a fait accompli type solution for me to 'officially' support it. I would love to support 4DOS but i have bigger fish to fry and too many cooks aint going to spoil this broth so your welcome to step up to the stove anytime.... just leave all the analogies to me newwink.gif

No, it's better to leave it in for all those who aren't conscious of the need to NOT visit WU. Just the info that is included is reason to keep it in for the medium term.

Yep you're right, it's a very poor install method to hope to overwrite files in use. I will put my new found INF knowledge to good use and make a proper one. If MDGx hasn't already beat me to it. The last time i looked he hadn't.

Can you be more specific with your suggestions about what should be optional? You can't have enough flexibility with a project like this so i agree but please stick your neck out some more and suggest a list of candidates to be moved to optional status. We all promise not to succumb to temptation to cut it off.

soporific welcome.gif :

I'll try to keep this short (for once... kinda...).

-- 4DOS: Yep, a "handful" more "fixes" (it's simply due to the method you used). I already have a handle (kinda) on them. If you have already "fixed" those "basic" things I mentioned, I will take it from here (v1.96?). As I had said, I was nearly there when AP started mushrooming+repairs. Besides, I like the "structured programming" functionality.

-- "delete WU": just being a facetious smart-axx whistling.gif

-- Unicows: went nuts for a while until I discovered that since I use MS Virtual PC and the VPC Add-ons, it was installed and being used. Was simply going to "uninstall" then apply Unicows (which is "one-version-newer"), then re-install. Got your fix; haven't tried it yet, plan on repeating Lite/Full testing sequence again with ALL selected to install. Got the ADDREMOV fix, even though "outdated"(?). Remembering to rename DX9SETUP to DXSETUP (why not make install setup just like Full version; no mods to DX9 .BAT module?).

-- Optional vs Necessary: Soon, VERY soon; will probably do a final AP (using Full), de-selecting what I consider to be "optional" and will just ship the results. This for Loading the first "give-away" PC.

-- Have downloaded latest UBCD; would like to try it, installing only "necessary", and provide it, a free firewall, a free anti-virus, and AP (on same CD) to the recipients of said PC's. I'd rather not be bothered by them to "fix" their own silly crashes (me no support free PC). Will continue this subject on that thread.

I thought I had already lost it when I turned 55, and me having another b-day just this month! How ironic!!! (like my new Custom Title?)

Gimmee v1.96 so's I can play with 4DOS and "run from the CD"!!! I'm gamey; since the Shop has left me with little to do except stay home and wait for parts/paint, may as well "play" on the 'puter! I am anticipating that it will be pretty stable. WHEN I am successful I'll just send you what I modded. Who knows, this project and UBCD may even merge (kinda what you intended?)!

edit for LL028: O crud, I just realized if 2nd PC has an older CD-ROM, it may not read CD-RW's. U need a solution if that is the case; will check your original post thread occasionally to see where you're at, 'k? (p.s. don't bother ripping the other cards out; they are supported by Win98se)

Hmmm! Unless you put an old one in, if the PC doesn't have a diskette drive it is either too old to worry about or it had a new enough CD burner lol See? If we don't get enough information, we have tp make an a** out of U and ME don't we?

Oh, Windows Update off the Start Menu? Yeah, it is way too obvious - who needs that flashing at them every time they want to click something. I always delete it and use the Internet Explorer | Tools | Windows Update link, but chaqu'un a son gout. You know one of the really losing things Microsoft did when they moved on to XP? They made it too hard to make the entire Start Menu controllable with the keyboard. I spent YEARS refining my lovely start menu links with letters and numbers so I didn't have to reach for the mouse for anything lol

I just wanted to let you know that for me, Windows 98SE lately has been the most impossible operating system to try to install and use on my computer!

In my latest attempt on a clean hard drive I had Partition Magic make a 60GB partition and format it, and I installed 98SE. I made the normal additions to system.ini regarding VCACHE and 386Enhanced having the lines that make things work with a gig of RAM. Rebooted and all seemed well.

I installed the Via Hyperions and rebooted to something like "System needs VMM32 and can't find it so put the darned thing in your path will you?"

Okay, I figured that possibly the old HP Pavilion bug (this is a home built, not an HP) had hit me so I used Edit to add C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM to the path in autoexec.bat. That used to work during installs on some HP's when getting a similar startup error like that.

It still couldn't find it. I tried typing in the whole path instead of using SET PATH=%PATH% followed by ; and the added ones. Still no go. No safe mode, no nothing, which was different as even those HP's boot into safe mode when that sort of error occurs.

I noticed that ScanDisk was freezing when trying to run at bootup. Uh oh! So I ran it myself from the command prompt and it reported an error and I let it fix it. No good rebooting again.

So I put in my Partition Magic floppy and was greeted with a description like "Bad Partition or MBR" instead of what it was. Actually PM offered to fix the error, but when I let it it reported that there were too many errors to fix.

I tried deleting the partition and it did, but then only showed it as Bad again instead of free space. I tried fdisk /mbr from a floppy but that still didn't fix the problem.

I'm now typing from Windows Vista, which installed perfectly right from the DVD onto this same hard drive. When installing, I had it remove the partition (which it showed as able to install on and no error about it) and create a new one, format it, then install on the whole drive.

When Vista was up I had it schedule a complete CHKDSK on reboot. The drive had absolutely no errors on it and nothing to fix. After installing a zillion programs and all my drivers and stuff I defragged and all went fine. The latest Via Hyperions installed fine too. I used the latest version on Vista, but had used the prior version for 98SE as Via says there are problems with the newer one on anything but Vista. So I had used the right ones for both but 98SE really didn't like them!

Weird eh? I had used those Via Hyperions on this board on 98SE and this hard drive many times in the past and never encountered anything like this. For some reason even Partition Magic couldn't work with the drive in the state it was in but Windows Vista treated it like a normal drive with absolutely no difficulties in working with it.

I don't get it. 98SE hates me. In VMWare I can run it fine, but not on any motherboard I have natively. I'm cursed!

Googleye-search yielded interesting reading:
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windows98/vmm32.html

Explains where "vmm32.vxd" really comes from. Also gives potential "fix". Apparently, it is "built" based upon REG entries and WININIT.INI entries. Somehow the Via Hyperion driver install must have kaboomed some entries that caused a bad "new vmm32.vxd" to be "built", hence corrupting your HDD upon reboot. I believe you must also get the Via drivers appropriate for your particular chipset/platform (including those necessary for AGP, etc.).

Go here for driver selections (read the contents of selections carefully):
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
Select Win98SE, select ChipSet, then read. It claims that the latest will probably work, but I have used the "older" version on a couple of older Via boards (eg Tyan Trinity 100AT w/MVP3 chipset) and it worked wonderfully. I also installed onto a Compaq Presario 7900 (Socket-A Athlon) from v4.43 and it worked. All depends on whether Video/Sound/etc. are built into the MoBo. Try it next; this will probably depend on the "manufacture date". There is also a "useful information" and "older drivers" selection(s) you can go to.
Here is also the installation guide (important read this!):
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1...onGuide2005.htm

Maybe you already did the above (you did not specify the source/version of drivers installed or the particular model of Pavilion)???

Also found that some older HP's had a booger in them that was "fixed" by:
- changing the boot order to HDD first
- removing install CD after first reboot
Both of the above sound rather weak, though.

edit : also noted this on MSFN:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...6349&st=620
Read down it to Halloween (Oct 31 2006 / VIA 6203 on board ethernet?)... it appears that you had been bitten before!

Hope this helps...

QUOTE (Eck @ May 6 2007, 01:19 PM) *
I just wanted to let you know that for me, Windows 98SE lately has been the most impossible operating system to try to install and use on my computer!

In my latest attempt on a clean hard drive I had Partition Magic make a 60GB partition and format it, and I installed 98SE. I made the normal additions to system.ini regarding VCACHE and 386Enhanced having the lines that make things work with a gig of RAM. Rebooted and all seemed well.

Sounds like me before I found this site. I got a variety of similar messages, but whatever I did, they were always different error messages - or it left me hanging. I was one of the lucky ones because the Win98SE partition was ABOVE the 137GB limit so I found out about the problem before wraparound tried to mess with my other partitions.

How big is/are your hard disk(s)? If the 60GB partition is on a disk larger than 137GB, you have to do the Enable48bitLBA thing manually from DOS during the installation (or other ways see below). If your disk is 137GB or less, ignore the rest of this! Remember, it is the DISK size, not the partition size.

I stopped installing Win98SE direct from CD years ago - I wrote a batchfile which created the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS path on the empty partition I was installing into and copied all the \Win98\ files to that directory as you probably want them there forever anyway (we aren't chasing our tails on disk space like we used to!) If you do that, you can then install from hard disk and you won't need your CD for any changes you make to Windows later.

If you do install from hard disk, you can swap the ESDI_506.PDR file anytime before you start the install and it will be fine. If you don't do that, another way is to insert the hacked ESDI_506.PDR file into the CAB before you write your next installation CD - the problem with that will be if you want to use the CD on a system which has smaller disks than yours. If you don't do either of these, you have to remember to have that file available to DOS and stop the installation into DOS before that final reboot and swap the ESDI_506.PDR file from DOS before rebooting. The time when you must swap it is when the installation program does its final reboot into Windows itself to start the plug and play detection etc.

Hope this helps you. If not, I hope it helps someone else biggrin.gif

Yep, that's my other (and I had thought, only) big 98SE mess. I'm glad for the explanation that the Via driver install just zonked out in remaking vmm32. Kind of figured as much but seeing my luck and having Vista's DVD actually fix things up I'm not going to get started with 98SE again unless I get to adding it in VMWare to my setup. I am surprised that that one muck up could render my whole hard drive useless to anything but an operating system install disk. Even Partition Magic and fdisk /mbr couldn't deal with it. How Vista saw everything as being fine I'll never understand.

I was aware of the Via places and procedures. This is a late (last?) model motherboard of the Socket A series so the 4.43 didn't work well with it. It couldn't install itself, in fact, always giving a setup error. The motherboard cd even had a later variety of 4-in-1's but the newer Hyperion set had always worked fine.

I'll just do a Vista/Linux setup. What's on here now has to go because the Vista setup is, shall I say, just something I wanted to play with temporarily as an experiment. It did fix up my hard drive from whatever that vmm32 error did to it, which is nice.

My unhooked PC has my actual Vista Retail Upgrade installed on it with a dual-boot Vista/SuSE Linux. It has an ATI card and a semi-defective USB hub that I use a Belkin 4 Port hub to work around. I wanted to use this nearly identical PC I built with the same model of Epox motherboard but with an NVidia Videocard. This, to see about highly vaunted NVidia superiority when used in Linux. Plus, no USB problem. I just ordered a second Vista from Amazon so I can be all legal and everything. In a couple of days it'll get here and I can wipe the hard drive and start fresh. (Eidenk will likely get a chuckle out of that.) I bought it at about the same price as the discount Microsoft gives for additional licenses, but I'll have another shiny new box and the 2 DVD's again (32 and 64 bit). Microsoft's web site wouldn't let me buy the license from whatever it is I've got installed here that I'm not saying, so I would have needed to hook up the other computer to get it to work. Luckily, Amazon had the full boxed up new thing for the same price as just the additional license.

Now, if NVidia can only catch up to ATI in Vista driver stability I'll be happy. The latest NVidia WHQL's do crash and recover every so often at startup, and they also blue screened me once (so far). The ATI card never crashed itself or the system on me, even during the Vista Beta period. But since I intend to spend the majority of my time in Linux I think the NVidia setup is the way to go for me.

So, thanks for the assistance and I will look forward to using the newest Auto-Patcher on a VMWare Guest setup at some point soon.

Edit - Ah! I was replying to submix8c but saw you're post, briton, when I was done.

In my prior IOS Error difficulties it had occurred on both large ATA drives and large SATA drives. That 48 Block driver update doesn't affect the installs on a SATA hard drive as that driver isn't being used.

This new vmm error is on the SATA drive. Both of these drives are 250GB. But in case you're thinking it applies, that IOS Error I get all the time also occurs on a normal 120GB ATA drive! Oh! It also happened to me on 2 really old motherboards with tiny 20GB hard drives. Like I said, 9x and me (I, not Windows Me!) haven't gotten along for a long time now.

From my experience, as long as I installed on the first primary partition and kept the size limited to up to 120GB, I had no problem whether using the ESDI pdr update or not. On Sata, of course it didn't matter and I substituted Norton Disk Doctor for Scan Disk and at one time even installed 98SE to the whole 250GB. The ESDI pdr driver isn't used so it didn't even matter that the patch hadn't been created yet. On ATA, yes it matters and I never even tried going past 120GB with one of those.

Of course, those good 98SE times were before my difficulties of the last couple of years.

I installed the Via Hyperions and rebooted to something like "System needs VMM32 and can't find it so put the darned thing in your path will you?"

If you are sure all the hardware is still 100%, it's definitely the drivers you are trying ... can't you pin down ones that may not be the latest, but were known to work sometime in the past? If that doesn't work, then accept that the new OS may as well go on.

re: NEWS - a snippet from the first post:

* the modules are getting themselves reorganized:
- the Windows Installer module has been renamed to Windows Essential Components and contains: Windows Installer v2, Force ASPI 1.7 (WNASPI32.DLL 4.60.1021), Windows Networking Tool, and QFEchkup (more maybe added later). They will not have optional status as i think they are all necessary and safe to run in all circumstances. With ASPI, if you have the later version of the dll, it will simply report that the update has been superceeded, and if you don't have it you may as well get it.
- i'm thinking of adding shockwave and flash to Windows optional components (or i may resurrect the 3rd party apps module) - any comments?
Drugwash
Dunno about Shockwave (never had it required by anything) but Flash is too widespread for it to be left astray. Just make sure it's the latest version and it's getting properly installed. YouTube already says "This sh!t requires Flash version 9 or later" so stick it in.

As for ASPI, I think I heard about some 4.71.xxxx version, or am I completely out of track? Checking with Nero Info Tool, I get a report of ASPI 4.71 (0002) installed and working properly. It's just that AFAIR, the installer was pretty F'ed up and it needed some fix to be able to properly install that version.

I have been disconnected with this project for some time and I am sincerely sorry for that. It may still take me some time to come back. However, things are going just fine, AFAICS, so keep it up! thumbup.gif
Eck
The Hyperion 5.10's always worked fine for me so I guess something had just gone wrong with the setup that time. Perhaps since I used the Sata drive and had installed other things and rebooted a few times before doing the Hyperion install, it hadn't worked out. When I used the Sata drive in the past successfully, I had installed the Hyperions first thing. Guess I'll go back to doing that. I had thought that since the Windows 98 Resource Kit, the Microsoft Cd Sampler, and Plus! 98 (without McAfee, the Cd Player, Golf since I have the full version, or the Disk Addons) install some really old things that it would be better if I did those first but hey, guess I was wrong!

The newer aspi driver (4.71a2) often times doesn't work properly even if it somehow gets installed properly. So that ForceASPI 1.7 with the 4.60 versions is really the best. Much better than what comes with 98SE and rarely causes any problems. And using ForceASPI to install it is best because that batch also installs the needed registry entries that none of the official Adaptec installers do.

Having Flash and Shockwave installers is kind of a waste since often times folks install programs that install older versions. I've nearly always had to get all my programs installed, uninstall Flash and Shockwave using both the add/remove programs listings and the Adobe Flash and Shockwave uninstallers from their website, rebooted, go to Windows Components in add/remove and uncheck Shockwave Flash and reboot again, delete all the stuff in the C:\Windows\Macromed folder, reboot, and then install the latest versions from the Adobe website. I usually install Flash from the website, then install the downloaded Firefox version, and the downloaded Shockwave Installer Full which installs both to Internet Explorer and Firefox. This was my 98SE routine anyway.

On XP I install newer versions of Microsoft stuff like Money, which need the latest Flash installed first. So for that I do install the latest, then after all my stuff is installed I then go through the uninstall, reinstall routine. On Vista it's easier because I don't install any of the older stuff that installs old versions. I just install the latest Flash, install my software (and Encarta installs version 10 of Shockwave) then just do the Firefox Flash and the Shockwave Installer Full so the very latest Shockwave is installed to both IE and Firefox. No uninstalling needed. Microsoft Digital Image Suite Ann Ed installs the older versions of Flash (6, 7, and 8) but in a way that they're just added nicely but don't mess up the newer one.

So having it in the Auto-Patcher just gives us another version to uninstall in order to get all the crap cleaned up so just the latest version is installed clean.

Funny, but I usually unchecked that Windows Networking Tool and the Windows Update Checker. I don't see how those are essential. More like convenient tools for people that want them. Seems like they should be optional to me.

Oh! And yes, since I now have spent $490 for 2 copies of Vista I AM going to be using it! Sheesh. I might as well have bought a computer. Not really though. Buying retail means whatever computer I build in the future to replace these with will just need a call to Activation to switch one of these Vista's to it. So cost of operating system will be removed from the future expense, and I won't be stuck with crappy OEM proprietary hardware choices. I like building my own.

But, 98 will be revisited within VMWare. Love my Star Trek "Captain's Chair!" Only 98 plays that, and a few other favorites.

Surely there is no point in including Flash players or Sun Java - they produce updates so darned often without any announcements could you really keep up?

For the players, users only have to hit this URL to test and download/install if necessary both Flash and Shockwave: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/

Obviously for Sun Java, they just go to java.com. Again, the releases come spradically and sometimes seem like such small changes.

Patching Win98SE is one thing. But once you have secure internet access configured with an up to date anti-virus program, the work is practically done isn't it? I mean otherwise are you going to include security/malware programs and so on? I put the basics of those on my boot CD but it's a personal choice thing!
Drugwash
I'm also thinking of users that have no internet access. One may go over and install the OS and Auto-Patcher on top of it, and get the most out of it.
But I guess Shockwave/Flash could be regarded as third-party apps. Anyway, I'd rather have Flash 9.x somewhere on the CD and have most apps/games run, than get stuck with older IE versions of them.

It will work the same way as when you choose to visit this project's homepage (ie here) --i just code START <download location> -- the OS recognises an internet location and tries to 'go there' --- since you are actually connecting to a file that is normally downloaded, what should happen is that the download starts, or it is grabbed by FlashGet and you know the rest ...

Funny, but I usually unchecked that Windows Networking Tool and the Windows Update Checker. I don't see how those are essential. More like convenient tools for people that want them. Seems like they should be optional to me.

Regarding the networking tool, think of it like this: If you easily had the option of doing so, would you un-install that component from Windows XP?? Why would you bother? It's certainly useful if your XP machine seems to have 'forgotten' its network settings, or if something else changed them, or something terrible happened yada yada yada. So what AP is doing is 'restoring' this very useful feature to your Windows OS as it should have been there in the first place. Install it and hide the shortcut in the system utilities folder hidden away in Siberia with all the other useful windows utilities, while all of Microsoft's less useful programs are more prominently profiled, and just forget about it. And thank me when you need to use it once in a blue moon! And the size of the thing certainly is significant - i'm sure we can afford the 385k of space - maybe less if i get of my butt and make a proper inf for it... [edit: well, i nicked the inf from another update and adapted it so we now have a properly iexpressed hotfix, saving a massive 35k of space]

oh, and QFECHECK is already on your computer, this makes sure its the latest version, and chucks an icon in front of it. not even worth the effort it takes to unselect it in AP.
Eck
Oh. Okay. But regarding the Flash and Shockwave stuff, I still see it as just perhaps something that you could just suggest the url in one of the messages or readme files. We really don't want the link that installs Shockwave from the internet automatically as most of the programs we will install after the Auto-Patcher will install older versions over this anyway, and that automatic version is only the cut down Shockwave for Internet Explorer that not only doesn't install to Firefox, but also doesn't include all the parts of Shockwave Installer Full. And the Shockwave versions prior to 10 install the older Flash on top of everything as well.

So perhaps a listed link to the latest Flash installer and a listed link to the Shockwave Installer Full download would be helpful, but not a link to automatically download and install the stuff.

The inclusion in the manual install folder of another folder containing the latest Flash Uninstaller and the Shockwave Uninstaller for the older stuff like Shockwave 8 versions would be helpful to those who need (everyone) to use those before downloading and installing whatever the latest versions are. And perhaps a readme instructing to first use add/remove programs and uninstall every Macromedia, Flash, Shockwave program, reboot, use the stand alone uninstallers, reboot, use the Windows Components tab of add/remove to uncheck and uninstall Shockwave Flash and reboot, delete all the files and folders in C:\Windows\Macromed, reboot, and to then install the latest versions. That is how to get a fully working clean install of this stuff in 9x. And perhaps suggest that one should install their Flash/Shockwave software and games, encylopedia's, etc that install older versions before doing all this. Otherwise they'll just have to repeat this procedure.

It really is that much of a mess on 9x only. XP requires less mucking about and Vista doesn't let much of the older stuff install so just installing the latest does the trick.

Occasionally the uninstallers get stuck as well. Not a big problem as we wind up emptying the folder anyway before installing the latest when using 9x (not XP or Vista). It just nice when the uninstallers don't get stuck as then the registry entries are cleaned up nicely. Again, not a big problem as the latest versions put in anything they need.
Drugwash
Ah, so you want UNINSTALLERS for Macromedia/Adove stuff, but not the actual installers? Did I read that correctly? So what should one uninstall, actually?

Do you remember that Auto-Patcher is meant to install/update what is not installed or old? So why shouldn't it be some Macromedia installers available, so one could have at least a newer version of Flash/Shockwave, even on a second/third/whatever run of Auto-Patcher?
And those links to the latest versions could still be available, for those who do have internet access.

Sorry not to help with UBCD - I find the boot CD is so personal, I make my own and change it for different needs. You are trying to cater to all tastes and all eventualities so partial success is amazing and you should never feel a failure!

As an example, I wanted to move my XP partition from first partition of second HD to 2nd partition of 1st HD, put Vista on the 1st partition, convert some partitions to NTFS, move some other partitions and resize them all WITHOUT using any commercial software. Done in about 11 minutes and without breaking any licence agreements, but all the boot CDS on the web couldn't do it so I had to find my own way! For others, my way might not have worked either. UBCD is great, but the first thing many people are gonna do is break it apart, swap some things and so on. My own boots now have a full 2.44MB disk image which contains all I want if I want to go straight into DOS without CD support - again, built without paying a penny and without pirating. Good luck!
Eck
Well, the uninstallers wouldn't hurt. I found that they were needed to have a clean install of the latest versions on 98SE. And installing the latest versions early in the process I suppose wouldn't hurt either but in most cases would be kind of a waste of time as all the crap installed by older versions afterwards makes uninstalling everything part of Flash and Shockwave necessary.

I guess for those who then run Auto-Patcher a second time would then get the new version installed again. Kind of a long process for just Flash and Shockwave though. For me, I'd likely only run Auto-Patcher once in any case. Once I've installed all those 98SE2ME and 98MP10 full versions I likely would be done with updates and would rather go on to actually using the system. When a new version comes out with new updates, that's different.

And of course going to the Shockwave media check page, at least for Firefox users, just lists the versions currently active on your system. No auto-install is started unless you're using Internet Explorer with Active X allowed. I use that page to check both browsers following the Flash install in Internet Explorer, the downloaded Flash for Firefox install, and the Shockwave Installer Full setups.

The links to the Internet Explorer Flash installer, the Firefox Flash download link, and the link to Shockwave Installer Full would be great to have in there for those who have trouble with the sometimes confusing Adobe website. The uninstallers put in the manual installs folder would be nice too. The installers get updated too frequently to include in Auto-Patcher in my opinion.

It is a procedure. It's not, unfortunately, just go get the newest version and install it like most other plugins. On Vista, yeah, as the operating system doesn't come with the oldest version imaginable and most folks won't be installing programs with Shockwave 7 and 8 on Vista. Last time I did, none of the Shockwave files actually installed (thankfully), but the older Flash ocx files were added to the Flash folder. But since I don't think Vista allowed any registry change the only one used would be the latest one that has a Vista compatible setup. So there's no more hassle on Vista.

But this is 98SE, which allows anything to make registry changes and install software. In a lot of cases this is nice but with Flash and Shockwave it makes a user need to go back and fix the mess.

just doing final tests now ... one of the tests is comparing the results of a full patch of a clean windows 98 re-installation using v1.95, and v1.96 and let me tell you, i already hate (or at least greatly dislike) v1.95 !! it's so slow !!! all the bloomin' reboots, how did you ever put up with it ?? I've been working and testing 1.96 for quite a while now and i've gotten used to the changes i've made. I wasn't joking that it's about 33% faster. It could be more ... i'll be uploading any second now ... and i'll post the benchmark results of the 2 versions ... i reckon the figures will be interesting ...

oh, and the next full version of this project will be called Auto-Patcher for Windows 98se (May 2007) and future versions will be known by the month they are released in. It is simply a coincidence that this is exactly how the other Auto-Patchers for Windows OSes are named. Really, it is smile.gif - there will still be a version number to designate code changes.

Benchmarks: (using Win98 inside MS Virtual PC 2007 on a PentiumD 940 system)

AP version -- 1.95 ... 1.96

Test A ------- 3:02 .... 1:40 ... a 45% reduction
Test B ------- 43:07 ... 30:58 ... a 28% reduction -
test figures in minutes and seconds.

i reckon that averages out at about 33% --- like i predicted in the first post!

the number of reboots for 1.95 for test B was 21
the number of reboots for 1.96 for test B was 15

Test A: running thru default module options on a fully patched computer. Nothing is installed, so this mainly tests code optimization improvements, however, there is some distortion via the differences in the additions (mainly tweaks) and omissions (mainly hotfixes), but there are more additions than omissions, so 1.96 should probably take longer to run if the code was the same.

Test B: running thru the default module options on a just-installed Win98se system. This means everything selected gets installed.

i'll comment on all the results at the end. It looks good so far though, doesn't it ...

FlashGet is good (as is a very similar programme called GigaGet) but they do throw up errors of this kind because they break downloads up into chunks and these chunks don't always stick together properly, particularly with large files. When I was downloading DirectX the other day it ground to a halt saying that file size had changed.

Since version 1.8x, FlashGet tends to throw errors, once in a while, not to mention other bugs/unwanted behaviour (that I reported some time ago in their forum but for some reason it dissapeared) on a Win9x system. But I still use 1.73 on my Win98SE, which seems to work just fine, and was still available from their site last time I checked.
