I agree with soporific regarding the size. Don't forget what a time and hastle saver this program is. This is not just a Windows Update installer. It provides nearly all operating system provided program upgrades as well. We're talking Direct X, Internet Explorer, Window Media Player, etc, etc.
And yes, when the bad taste in my mouth passes from my latest failure I will try again. But in the meantime I can play with 98 in VMWare without worrying. Well, as soon as I get to that. I think I'll use what I've got for a bit until I get into the installing mood again.
soporific, has progress occured regarding Dialup Networking, 256 Tray Icons, Windows 2000 Color Scheme, the Gape style explorer.exe with his full icon package, or the icon cache size increase? I think those are the only things making the installation of the Gape Unofficial 98SE Service Pack necessary before running your package. Well, those and the Web Folders update but I think the Web Folders are updated by OfficeXP for those that install that anyway.
Any news on those fronts? I haven't noticed you commenting on whether you got any of those cleared up in your new package.

Thanks for backing me up, Eck .... but .... oops, I forgot to delete the hot girl-on-girl bdsm videos from the extras folder !!! No wonder the size is so big ...!!! (of course i'm joking -- my point is, its not as if I've included completely spurious updates and other useless junk --- I consider everything I've included as completely relevant to an AutoPatcher for Windows 98se. Everyone, please advise which particular apps should be left out of the next version if you disagree with what was included. The size of the file is likely to increase significantly --- I haven't even nearly finished!!)

OK, I have shunted aside the problematic installs into a folder called 'manual installs' --- when you run the autopatcher and you don't have Dial-up Networking 1.4 (DUN14) installed, the program asks you if you want to install that first. If you say Yes, it launches the setup program for DUN14... (and then quits out so you don't get any hanging windows) ---- with regard to the others problem files (Web folders update and native USB drivers), there's a note in the log file reminding the user that the 'manual installs' folder exists and that anything inside the folder should be installed manually. Hopefully we can get this folder empty in the end.
I haven't added the tray icons, Win2K colors, or the icon cache size increase --- but they shouldn't be too hard to add as optional extras. I will have a look at this ...
Everyone, please note: IF YOU WOULD LIKE SOMETHING ADDED TO AUTOPATCHER -- it is really only determined by my coding skills. If I can't do it, sorry. HOWEVER --- if you know how to package your desired installation into a self-installing package, then do so and I will add it to the program. What would be really excellent, would be for someone to package Gape's stuff that I've yet to include (ie all of Eck's suggestions from above) so all I have to do is add another section to the appropriate module. Credit will be given to all those who contribute in this way.
I don't intend to make a big thing about the fact that it was ME who wrote the autopatcher, so if anyone wants to come on board in a more official capacity to help with development, you are more than welcome. Most of the credit goes to the wealth of information that can be found on the msfn website anyway ...

Eck If it is happening on different mboards the only time I have come across the same issue is when I have been making a minimised install and the fonts have all been set to hidden. attrib -h on reboot corrected this and as you pointed out windoctor may be making this change for you.
Hope your up and running soon
p.s a test drive using mindows for an install might be worth a try to see if the same issues arise
soporific thanks for all your hard work, downloading now and will give it a try on my next install

No, it doesn't - sorry. Is there some info I can read that will help me implement a languange check? What is it exactly supposed to do?
Nah, I was probably unclear. I was just asking if your pack would refuse to install for testing on my non-english windows because of a language check. If there is no test that's better !

I'm sure everybody knows installing english updates on non-english windows will not work / turn it into a language mess so I don't see the point of a check.

Everyone, please note: IF YOU WOULD LIKE SOMETHING ADDED TO AUTOPATCHER
256 colors icon tray is a must if you want to make win98 more eye candy. It's all exlpained at
Dr. Hoiby's page. Just a simple patch.
Maybe WMP6.4 + patches + codecs for those allergic to more recent versions? But sure that would increase size of the autopatcher for the benefit only few people so I guess it's not NEEDED.
180mb is big but it's the size of my update folder so I don't see how it could be smaller. Maybe do a LITE version?

Hmm, well I know I could always go to the font folder and they sure didn't look hidden (you know, faded). I could double click them and they would open fine, showing all the pretty pictures of the particular font. New fonts appeared to install properly when program installs would add them.
So I don't know if it's the fonts causing the problem. I don't have a clue what it is. Obviously one problem WAS smartdrv.exe existing in the Windows folder as I fixed the problem by removing that. Don't ask me WHY that was a problem. It is installed by the Windows setup as it always has been. When this (renaming it) fixed it, I moved it to the Command folder and renamed it back so I could use it for starting in MS-DOS Mode for my Dos gaming. Windows still started up fine then.
Then when all my stuff was running fine and I was enjoying using 98SE, suddenly on a startup the IOS error appeared again. I had no idea how to fix it this time as smartdrv was already not in the Windows folder.
That's when I just repartitioned, formatted, and installed XP to the main drive and Vista to the 2nd drive.
And that's where I am now. No 98. Not a huge loss in today's world but having it provides me with a few advantages. I'll leave things for now, as I said, and get back and try it sometime.

or you could make all of those extras just that... extras. If I recall correctly you can use extra modules with Autopatcher (the official ones for Windows 2000, XP, and 2003). Maybe you could add this type of support for this Autopatcher as well. I'm sure that everyone would be happy with that. Or you could just add all extras to a separate pack, Autopatcher Extra or something like that

The difference between the extra modules and this idea is that this would be an all-in-one pack instead of separate modules for each extra. Just an idea though...

I was thinking about doing that (separating the autopatcher into 2 - main & extras), but it would still result in a very big Main file size, with the extras not nearly being so big. That is how it would be right now. Depending on how many extras i include, this may be the way to go sometime down the track.
OK, with regard to feedback --- some people are saying they will use the autopatcher when they need to re-install their operating system --- yes, you could wait that long, but that's not going to help get this project from alpha to beta. There is something more you can do ...
PLEASE TEST THIS USING THE REPORT FUNCTION!! --- the most recent addition to this project, which means some may not be aware, is the report function. This allows you to see before-hand what autopatcher thinks you need to install. IF ALL THE REGULARS ON THIS LIST ran the report function on their current system, i'm sure this would either bring up lots more bugs and mistakes (ie reporting the wrong thing) or not. The report function doesn't change or install a single thing on your computer, so it should be safe to use!!
Come on, give it a go ... here's an example report to look at - in this example, I ran every module except Internet Explorer 6 sp1 to see if some updates that required IE6 installed would recognise that its missing and respond appropriately. It worked as expected. This was the report generated after running the above modules.

Too Late!!! Your question was asked, and replied to !!! LOL --- it WASN'T STUPID !!!! There's at least one reason I can see why this is a good question to ask --- saving space in the autopatcher package.
I'm pretty sure you can't delete posts --- but you can edit out your question if you are fast enough !! ie before it becomes historical when someone replies ... like what just happened. LOL!!
QUOTE (StateS @ Nov 16 2006, 11:43 AM)

Just a question. Internet Explorer, DirectX and some other updates also include files for NT based operating systems... Did you remove these files before adding them to Autopatcher? I know... this is kind of a stupid question, but still...
Why exactly did you want to know? To save space in the autopatcher package? Another reason?
No, its not a stupid question at all --- I think the DirectX pack has the extra NT-based files removed but I haven't taken any files out of the installer packs, no. I can imagine we can save some space by removing them, but i have no idea what we can take out, etc.
This project is really an automatic hotfix installer (as well as doing other things) so you can safely assume, unless otherwise said, that the hotfixes are exactly the same as the ones you download from the Windows Update.
Just in case I haven't already said: FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS WELCOME in whatever the form it comes.

OK then

Well, yeah, the idea was to make the autopatcher installation smaller (basically this is the only fact that people complain about

, although I think that the file size is alright, of course this is just my opinion...). If there is some sort of software that can detect which files (and registry entries if possible) are being installed on your computer in real time it would be easy to know which files are needed and which ones aren't... I think... Of course I'm not sure if the Internet Explorer installation installs certain files in certain situations or not... Or any other installation for that matter. Well if someone went to the trouble of creating a reduced DirectX installation package for W9x then someone might have already made a reduced package for Internet Explorer as well.

I don't think this is a good one. In my experience I found that it significantly degradated system performance.
Some people like this tweak [fixed swap file size] better than the Win98/ME default dynamic swap file:
http://www.mdgx.com/98-4.htm#COSWI've been also using it for quite a while, with no noticeable performance degradation.
I've also installed this tweak on a couple of friends' Win98SE PCs which I service on a regular basis, also without any problems.
Please notice that this tweak depends on the amount of RAM installed.
If you have 64 MB or less, do not do this.

I always use conservativeswapusage=1 and unload dlls etc,and again I disable vcache not recommended for a normal install(similar to 98lite), alot of the time I run purely in ram (min of 128) no hard drive attached usually booting from a compact flash card.
soporific I only have hybrid systems otherwise I would have tested your update straight the way, soon as I have a normal install I will test it out and cherry pick the updates for the other systems

I don't think this is a good one. In my experience I found that it significantly degradated system performance.
Let's try to get to the bottom of this ... AFAIK the above SYSTEM.INI entry forces the computer to use as much of the physical memory as possible, and as little of the swap file as possible. This issue became obvious when newer computers with over 128mb of RAM became the standard computer spec and people were wondering why there was disk activity relating to the swap file when there was still lots of spare RAM. This setting will stop this.
When it is not good to do this: after some research, it seems there are circumstances where it's still not a good idea to use this tweak --- the main one is when the computer still needs to use the swap file when the ConservativeSwapfileUsage setting has been set to 1. If you are playing a game that loads lots of stuff to memory, some report that it will be better to ask the computer to use the swap file like normal to better manage the data in the RAM and the swap file.
So, we could maybe say, for gaming computers (or other apps that use big amounts of RAM) don't set it, but for all other situations, do set it.
EDIT: --- here is the sort of feedback i'm after ... here's the report file from a fresh install system upon which I ran every one of the other service packs currently available. And this was after manually installing IE6sp1, MDAC 2.8 sp1, DX9c (Oct 06) and WMP9 -- the list of missing updates is huge !!!

A HUGE amount of kudos will be granted to the first person to post their report log file. Just so you know, kudos will be the currency of the future, so start collecting them now !!
Edit 2: here's the latest info on issues with v1.5 -- copied from the first post.
Bugs or issues with v1.5:
- there is a bug in the 'saved choices' function (which allows you to save your module choices for the next time) -- your choice for Internet Explorer 6 Administration Kit won't be saved if you try, and will always reset to 'by-pass' when you load your saved choices.
- in the WMP9 module, the LC3codec update has been duplicated - there are two entries exactly the same - which will result in 2 entries in the report log file for LC3codec being missing if LC3codec has not yet been installed. This only affects the report function, the rest of the code handles this mistake quite gracefully (if you ask me)
- the shortcut that the program puts on to the desktop is configured wrong --- you need to change the target filename from StartPatch.bat to StartPch.bat --- sorry!
- if you have the OS installed on any drive other than the C drive, the missing updates report reports that the Disable Boot Logo tweak is not installed, when it actually is. I mistakenly put the file path for msdos.sys as %windrive%\msdos.sys (%windrive% is a custom variable that sets the location of the drive where Windows is installed) instead of c:\msdos.sys --- this will be fixed in v1.6
- i mistakenly included a zipped version of the kb873374 update in the hotfixes folder. This takes up a whopping 253 bytes of unnecessary space! This will be removed for the next version.

QUOTE (soporific @ Nov 16 2006, 08:58 PM)
Let's try to get to the bottom of this ... AFAIK the above SYSTEM.INI entry forces the computer to use as much of the physical memory as possible, and as little of the swap file as possible. This issue became obvious when newer computers with over 128mb of RAM became the standard computer spec and people were wondering why there was disk activity relating to the swap file when there was still lots of spare RAM. This setting will stop this.
Thanks for the reminder.
I forgot to mention that this works best with at least 256, 384 or 512 MB of RAM [more the better].
Also, since the swap file is now fixed and maxed out, make sure you assign it a really large size in system.ini [example]:
[386enh]
PagingDrive=F:
PagingFile=F:\WIN386.SWP
MinPagingFileSize=819200
MaxPagingFileSize=819200
In this case the swap file is fixed in size at 800 MB [note the identical values for both minimum + maximum size].
If the swap file is fixed in size, there will be no more HD thrashing [swap file resizing].
Also, if the swap file resides on a local hard drive/partition, make sure it's the fastest one [if you have more than 1], preferably partitioned with FAT16 [fastest file system]. Best is to dedicate an entire FAT16 HD partition [2 GB] to the swap file.
Or put it on a USB stick [if available], or if you have RAM to spare, create a huge XMSDSK RAM disk [at least 700-800 MB] and put it on it.

No, its not weird --- this is exactly the reason I wanted people to do this. For quite a few of the hotfixes, autopatcher looks for the INF file that is usually left behind, but some people might be installing the updated system files in another way other than using the original hotfix package. All the unofficial service packs do this. So, for these cases i'll change the method of checking to the FILC method which is my file version checking system. I want to leave as many of the hotfix checks finding the INF file as possible because this is the fastest, and significantly saves time throughout the program's operation.
I'll check up on SE2ME and Unicows and report back soon ...

Weird thing is SE2ME and Unicows are installed. I'll test it on my real win98 soon.
The Win982ME module in v1.5 is a custom module that doesn't use the normal code to run everything. It uses the old method of checking if the update is installed (using file sizes). I've changed this to use the same code that all the other modules use, and now the check is for the file version of user32.dll (checks for version number 4.90.0.3001 or higher and skips install if found).
With regard to unicows, the code should be right. It checks for the file version of unicows.dll and if its lower than 1.1.3790.0 the report will say it needs to be installed. If its the same, it will report its already installed, or if its higher it will report that it has been superceeded. So check your version of unicows and get back to me.
Version 1.6 will be released very soon, currently only 2.4mb in size ...
Change log for v1.6Buxfixes:
- all bugs in v1.5 have been fixed (see main post for list)
Additions:
- to IE6sp1 module: kb886677 & kb834158
- to Windows Components module: System Policy Editor for Windows 98
Improvements:
- the Win98 to Me module uses a better upgrade check
- the report function has been tweaked further
- autopatcher now promtps to manually install Dial-Up Networking 1.4 if not already installed.

I ran version 1.5 of the autopatcher on a clean install of 98SE + SP2.1a. All seemed to work fine apart from upon the last reboot Windows complained about ASPI being older than the version it should be (can't remember the exact error, sorry). I've saved the log file if you need it, thanks for your work

Yes, when changing the pre-installed ASPI layer Windows will complain about an older file. Just click ignore to that message.
Gape's version of the forceASPI 1.7 in his Unofficial Service Pack adds a patch that eliminates that complaint. I noticed it when checking out one of the ini files in his pack.
There's no problem to just click the ignore button though, as you're never bothered again by that once you tell the Version Conflict Manager popup to ignore the file.

This list is great, thanks! --- these are your list of "problematic" installs - ie my code needs improving to handle these files better. If Unicows is now not present, that's a good thing. You'll see the results of your feedback in the change log, if any.

I downloaded 1.5 again just in case you changed anything.
Then I tried to download the 1.6 update several times. The first time I got the download page and "clicked here to download file." Internet Explorer 7 couldn't open the page.
On succeeding attempts I couldn't even get to the download page. Maybe their site is down at the moment?

Thanks soperific. I got it from the new link. Maybe if I had installed GetRight it would have worked from the original link. I haven't gotten to that yet. I usually wait until I encounter a problem, large type of file. That thing usually gets anything.
I'm excited about testing your new update at some point. I still wonder why System Information's Internet Explorer information was messed up every time I used your pack previously. Strange stuff.
I like your new additions! I've always installed System Policy Manager as part of the full Windows 98 Resource Kit. It was something I needed to install seperately as the complete setup doesn't install it. Now I can just run your pack, and like magic it'll be there!
Well, it'll be when I get to a VMWare install. I just don't trust that if I install 98 I won't get that IOS bootup error if I install it natively. I have no idea what's up with that but I real quesy about running 98 after that's happened to me every time for the last year or so.

In topic "W98se updaters"...
I am running W98se, Compaq desktop, 600mghtz, 6gig...
Is there a simple core way to DESTROY all the updaters in 98se?.. yet still permit manual updating?..
Reason: I find when I'm on a roll in creative writing or pix editing.. when an auto updater initiates, it momentarily sucks up all the RAM.. thereby momentarily locking out the mouse and keyboard.. which can too easily crash a creative roll...
I am experiencing problems with various AVS's.. in that, no matter what I do to try to shut down their auto updaters, they continue to attempt their firewall-blocked connections, momentarily sucking up all the RAM every five minutes... It's like it isn't my PC anymore... I had to dump the AVS just to get a little peace from the updaters...
Please Advise...

Um... er.... I have no idea. Your best bet is to start a brand new thread and ask your question there... I could be wrong, but I don't think your question relates to this thread much at all. And so you aren't going to get the answers you want.
re: more info from GlocK_94's list...
q323455: code updated.
q238543: code updated --- this is a funny one. q238453 has been superceeded by q269388 but autopatcher installs both to try and trick Windows update into ignoring that q238453 isn't installed (if q269388 is installed then q238453 ishould not be needed, but try telling that to Windows Update). I had actually changed the name of the install from q269388 to q238453 so people wouldn't get apprehensive about seeing that it was not in the list of system updates. Because this is going to cause confusion on this board at least, I've decided to go back to calling the install q269388. But just remember that q238453 is installed just before q269388, and that q238543 will never appear in the report of missing updates. If q269388 isn't installed, its a good bet that neither is q238453.
FYI - when it says the code has been updated, most of the time the check has been changed from checking for the INF file left behind when the hotfix is installed normally, to checking for the file version of the latest file possible. Most changes to the code Glock_94 pointed out were made because in all of these instances, the updates were not installed using the official hotfix (most likely reason).
This means that for all people using unofficial update packs to upgrade you computer, any new code I write from here on in will mean those installs will work for you guys. I say this because it is the regulars on this site that will MOST MISS OUT ON THIS AUTOPATCHER WORKING PROPERLY! For all those who use the official hotfixes from Micro$oft, the code will definitely work for you --- it is all the unofficial hotfixes (and this includes all the unofficial service packs floating around) that will cause the code to not function as intended. SO PLEASE DO WHAT GLOCK_94 DID AND POST THE LIST OF REPORTED MISSING INSTALLS that are erroneous, ie the report says they are missing but you have confirmed they have been installed. Then we can go BETA !!!
Thanks to all those who have written even just one word of feedback, you are legends every single one of you. Bah humbug to the rest!!

First of all - I think this is a great idea and work by soporific
Second - I am dealing with some laptops and old pc's in school and I have already made my "ultimate" win98se cd that contains setup, tweaks and yes - all updates. Reading all this made me wondering if there could be a possible way around to auto-install those M$ updates from CD where I have stored them. Since M$ won't make any new ones this could be very quick and less net speed dependent Autopatcher installation.
Correct me if I have missed this feature already added in, but since this patch is only 180MB I was not sure.
Um, I can't see how this confused people but...
This Autopatcher program does not connect to the internet to install any of the updates. You just run the 1.5 from your hard drive, close it without applying it, run the 1.6 update, then all the updates are applied by the Autopatcher.
It reboots your computer when necessary then continues its work. It will inform you when it is finished.
THIS right here is the thread where all the magic is discussed and developed.
Individual unofficial updates are discussed in the relevent threads in this forum. None of them are hard to find. (98SE2ME, etc.) Note that the 98SE2ME unofficial updater included in the Autopatcher is only a small section of the full MDGx 98SE2ME. If you want the full effect of that you need to download the full version and have a Windows Me cd in your possession.
Not certain, but I think you also need to apply the Dialup Networking 1.4 Windows Update before running the Autopatcher as otherwise it will only prompt you to manually install that before proceeding. Unless you use Virtual Private Networking, you should then go into Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components and remove the checkmark from Virtual Private Networking. Then also go into Network Properties and remove the additional items that say (Virtual Private Networking) after them. These items confused my cable internet and I couldn't connect until I removed them.
Of course, all that work can be avoided by installing Gape's Unofficial 98SE Service Pack before running the Autopatcher. Gape's pack installs Dialup Networking 1.4 without the Virtual Private Networking features. It also installs the rest of the nice Windows Me/Windows 2000 desktop icons and Windows 2000 color scheme so you have the complete set. Autopatcher only updates the My Computer icon and doesn't provide the nicer color scheme. If Gape's pack is installed first, Autopatcher won't mess with that stuff as it detects the proper Explorer.exe has been already installed. Gape's pack also fixes the Shell Icon Cache so you don't need to bother tweaking that either.
So at this point I would recommend installing the Gape Unofficial Service Pack, restarting twice (to make sure the registry is completely updated) then running the autopatcher stuff.
It appears that the 1.6 version of the Autopatcher now includes the latest Unofficial 891711 update so you won't need to mess with that. However I would run the latest WMF fix (918547) from MDGx AFTER using the Unofficial 98SE2ME. Make sure to tell it to overwrite if it asks. I'm also not certain that soperific has included the latest Internet Explorer Cumulative DLL Update. (918899 has been replaced by a newer one.) I would run the latest MDGx Unofficial one so you get the latest files there as well.
After the Autopatcher you can run the 98SE2ME (if you have a Windows Me cd), 98SE2XP, and WMP10 for 98SE Unofficial MDGx stuff, the WMF update, and you're finished.
All the work being done to these unofficial patchers is discussed right here in these forums in their clearly titled threads so there really isn't a lot of guess work to find this stuff. It's also easy to find the links through the mdgx.com website as MDGx has links to all this stuff.
So all those Windows Updates you have saved to a cdr wouldn't be necessary if you use the Autopatcher. It includes all the necessary files.

Excuse me KingArthur,
This may be arriving a little late to do you any good, but; if you go to
http://www.free-av.com/ and download their FREE version of AntiVir by Avira you may set the autodownload OFF and only have it run when you want or even set it to run when you are asleep.
I have a question for those of this forum on the UnOfficialWin98SE_SPx.x.x, what if I have installed the 98SE2ME software? Will the Updater for Win98SESP still be needed or do I need to use one for ME? Plus I am considering the Win98SE2XP but will be much farther down the road as I just installed the 98SE2ME about 2 hours ago and am very pleased with these results.
Thank you for reading my post,
If you had read the documentation for 98SE2ME you would have seen that it is recommended to install ALL 98SE updates before using 98SE2ME.
If you haven't installed 98SE updates, yes you still need them all. That's Internet Explorer, 98SE, WMP. Direct X, ALL of them.
You install 98SE versions when running 98SE regardless of whether you have 98SE2ME installed, however you should then reinstall the latest 98SE2ME following the updates. The exception being the Unofficial WMF update, which you should install after all of it as it will replace the Windows Me version with the patched 98SE GDI files (and you should let it replace the newer files when it asks.)
Same with 98SE2XP and the Windows Media Player 10 unofficial updates. You install those after all your 98SE, IE, WMP, DX updates and also after 98SE2ME. You do the 98SE2XP before the WMP 10 update as 98SE2XP updates WMP 9 files with the XP versions. Then when you run the WMP10 to 98 thing you get those updated to WMP10 versions.
The autopatcher will take care of nearly all of what you need before 98SE2ME, with the exception of 256 color tray icons, Windows 2000 color scheme, nicer desktop icons, a few registry tweaks, and most importantly Dialup Networking 1.4.
I don't think you'll have a problem if you install Dialup Networking 1.4, the Autopatcher, then reinstall 98SE2ME. But it would be easier as I've stated before, to install Gape's 98SE Unofficial Service Pack, then the Autopatcher, then reinstall 98SE2ME, then the WMF update.
Gape's pack will install the missing items I've mentioned (like Dialup Networking without hastling with Virtual Private Networking stuff) so you'll be all set to run the Autopatcher without missing out on anything.
AND - Just about any anti-virus scanner allows you to turn off auto updating. Some hide the options well, as they'd prefer to ensure that your definitions are updated so you don't blame them if a virus gets through.

From what I've read, you've already corrected some of them but I was too tired to compare.

Of course, I can't test what I don't have so this test used version 1.5 of your autopatcher and for exemple, none of the unofficial updates have been tested. I'll download the missing hotfixes and stuff when I have more time and complete the list.
Hope that helps !

QUOTE (gugutz @ Dec 5 2006, 10:51 PM)

will this work for non english versions of windows 98, like, say, brazilian portuguese?
I'm pretty sure it won't. A lot of the code checks for the english language version of certain registry keys and directory names. If you wanted to check for yourself, install a virtual machine application (ie VMware or MS virtual PC), install a clean copy of Win98 and then try to run the autopatcher. I for one would be very interested in the results.
Glock_94 thanks for your second list -- I'm working thru it now...

If this project is a success, I'll be so grateful.
I tried downloading Autopatcher v1.5. I have a dial-up connection, so you'll appreciate that it's rather a big download (not complaining, by the way). However, my ISP cuts my connection every two hours, so so the ability to resume downloads is essential to me. Unfortunately, the server you uploaded Autopatcher to doesn't allow the resumption of partial downloads. The 30-40 MB I did manage to download were of course completely useless to me and I had to give up.
Next time, if you can, please upload the Autopatcher to a server that allows download-resumption.
Thanks for your persistence with the project.

Bristols if it is of any help i could put the file on emule for you, or you could try wget which will resume the download. If you have a pc with 512mb or above I could also compress it with a higher compression algorithm to reduce its filesize.

soperific,
I just saw the reason for that Internet Explorer information not showing in System Information after using the Autopatcher.
http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#CSFMicrosoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/NT4 SP6a/2000/ME MSInfo32 Errors IEINFO5.OCX 5.50.4918.1900 Fix:

BUG: Microsoft System Information (MSINFO32.EXE) Internet Explorer Summary display is EMPTY if using Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/NT4 SP6a/ME!
FIX: MUST use OLDer IEINFO5.OCX 5.50.4807.2300 from Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 instead!
See that? The MSINFO update did that. So on 9x we need to not update that from the version in IE6 SP1. Perhaps you can remove the update from the next version of Autopatcher?
Apparently the IEINFO5.OCX must be version 5.50.4807.2300 from IE6 SP1.

The exception being the Unofficial WMF update, which you should install after all of it as it will replace the Windows Me version with the patched 98SE GDI files (and you should let it replace the newer files when it asks.)
Could you please provide a link to where this update could be discussed? If the WMF update is critical, I'd like to have a way of having the WinME GDI files patched rather than downgrading to 98SE files, reason being the project I'm involved with needs the ME files for at least one module to work under Win98SE (as I wrote in
this post).
soporific, everything sounds great so far. Haven't tried the package yet, gotta get myself a test machine, some spare time and the right mood, all at once. I'd have a few questions, though:
• Which exactly are the components of IE6 SP1 that are installed (or present in the package)? You may remember my old question regarding additional languages and all other stuff, from the '7 years later' thread;
• Will you include Visual C runtimes v6, v7.0, v7.1 and probably v8 (Visual C 2005) as well?
• Could you tighten things up a bit, so that string of extra operations wouldn't be necessary - I mean "install DUN 1.4 manually, install Gape's USP, install Autopatcher, install 98SE2ME full version, install yada-yada..." ? It'd be nice (and useful for many) to have it all in one shot - either in one package (yours) or at least to have the user put all separate packs together in one folder and go through all operations from a single script, be it a batch or whatever else. Personally I'd rather have it all in one package, like
1. Install Gape's USP............is set to INSTALL
2. Install Autopatcher....[m]..is set to INSTALL/FORCED
3. Install 98SE2ME................is set to INSTALL
and whatever else mentioned by users in the posts above. I hope you get the idea.
Looking forward to v1.7. Keep up the good work!

I'm excited about AutoPatcher98, but lemme understand:
it's just another unofficial update pack

or -more interestingly- a cumulative installer of other (uSP, 98SE2ME, etc) packs ?

Twice, I tried to download 1.5 autopatcher on dialup ... both nights the server ran at 5600 bps up until a file size of about 15-17meg, then it dropped down to 500 bytes per second -- changing what starts out as a std overnight download, into a 90 hr download (argh) ...
this sounds like a great solution for keeping 98 alive (although I never used an "autopatcher" before, and I really like what gape did with his sp).
I'll try again tomorrow night.
wget produces this result (the index file is std root index "FileFactory - fast, simple and free! /n FileFactory lets you host files up to 300MB for free. etc")

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=77218There's the thread with the WMF links. I'm not sure whether the Windows Me update would work on 98SE, even with 98SE2ME installed.
The Autopatcher is not a collection of Service Packs. Reading the information would tell you that. There is no reason for soperific to include the entire 98SE Unofficial Service Pack within the program as the Autopatcher already includes just about all the updates in that pack plus a lot more.
Since the 98SE Unofficial Service Pack doesn't include Direct X, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, or any updates newer than a couple of years ago we needed to install a heck of a lot of things one at a time before using the Service Pack and after using the Service Pack.
The Autopatcher eliminates all the hastling with updates. It includes just about all updated Windows components, Internet Explorer, etc, and you can choose to not install those you don't want.
My suggestion to install the 98SE Unofficial Service Pack first was because that pack includes a hastle free installation of Dialup Networking 1.4 that doesn't mess with Virtual Private Networking. When installing the Microsoft setup of Dialup Networking 1.4, it installs Virtual Private Networking and associated Networking drivers into the Network Properties. We then need to uninstall Virtual Private Networking from Add/Remove Windows Components and also delete the items associated with it from the Control Panel Network Settings applet. An unneeded hastle and eliminated if we install the 98SE Unofficial Service Pack.
So far no one has been able to figure out how Gape successfully provided, as he says, "components of Dialup Networking 1.4." But his is the best way to install it.
Gape's pack also tweaks a few settings and gives us the Windows 2000 Color Scheme, 256 Color Tray Icons, etc, etc. In all the Unofficial 98SE Service Pack as provided by Gape is the easiest way to get the whole thing tweaked up without doing it yourself.
There's no problem in using the Autopatcher after Gape's pack as the Autopatcher doesn't reinstall what it detects as being there already.
How hard is it to install the Service Pack, install Autopatcher, then install the latest 98SE2ME? Three things! And for those that want more there are the other available packages like 98SE2XP, Kernel Update Package, etc.
Personally I use Option 2 when running 98SE2ME. I've got other word processors and prefer to leave Notepad as it is and keep the general 98SE shell. If I wanted Windows Me I'd install it. I just want the updated 9x system files that 98SE2ME provides, not the change to the Windows Me shell or different boot screens. As nice as they are, I like the ugly Microsoft Windows 98 boot screen for reasons of nostalgia.
But I do use 98SE2XP and the WMP10 for 9x programs. Might as well have the improvments in WMP, etc.

First of all, thanks for the link.
Second, there's been some time since I replaced original 98SE gdi32.dll and msimg32.dll with the ME ones, as required by some Miranda IM modules in order to function on my 98SE system. If the 4.90.3000 build of gdi32.dll works, I see no reason why 4.90.3003 wouldn't. Will test it these days anyway.
Third - different people, different needs. Personally I thought that as long as the Autopatcher aims to collecting most (if not all) updates into one big package, it might as well add those improvements found in Gape's pack as well as those in 98SE2ME.
Of course, there have been complaints about the package size, but then there's the second possibility: just have a script that checks for the presence of USP and/or 98SE2ME (and possibly others, such as 98SE2XP) in the same folder and present the user with the choice of automating all the installs in one click. Call me lazy.
That's what the Autopatcher does. It checks for the presence of the same stuff it includes and skips over things that are already installed. It's just redundant for the Gape pack to be there because the Autopatcher includes what's in it for the most part already. It's just the unusually programed tweaks and updates (like Dialup Networking, etc) that make me want to install Gape's pack first. Don't REALLY need it. I just like some stuff it does.
As far as the Unofficial WMF for ME working on 98SE, you could try to run it and see what happens. If it runs and updates the files you're all set. If it complains that this isn't Windows Me, you could probably just apply the 98SE version then extract the specific files you need from the ME version and apply them manually from an F8 Command Prompt Only startup.
That way you'd get the proper registry entries and whatever else is in the fix, but wind up with the Windows Me versions after you replace what I think is just 2 files.
Remember, when running the 98SE version, say no to keeping newer file versions when Windows asks. That way the whole update is installed properly. After rebooting (or prepared ahead of time) you can then extract the 2 files from the Me version to a folder on the root of the drive and just reboot to the command prompt and copy them to the System folder, saying yes to overwrite the files.

It's the "unusual tweaks and updates" that I was thinking about, when mentioning Gape's pack. DUN 1.4 is needed by other updates or upgrades (such as IE6 SP1 if I'm not mistaken) and I always install it after a vanilla 98SE setup.
As for the ME GDI updates, curious as I am I manually extracted the files and ran the inf, which properly installed the two files. So far I haven't noticed any issue, except for the old accumulative effect on transparent pictures which is unavoidable.

I've already tried a couple of times to understand how Gape modified the DUN 1.4 update but no success. I won't say no to any help with this ...
re: will I include other unoffical service packs? The point of autopatcher (AP) is to provide a version for Windows 98se of a app like the AutoPatcher for Windows XP. The main thing is that its gotta be unattended. So any of the unoffical service packs that haven't got an unattended switch built in won't be included. Simple as that.
News on AP progress: Now that I've got an alpha of the Boot CD project out the door, I can resume work on AP. Feedback still has been quite sparse though....
PS - i am still going through all the recent posts and preparing answers to all questions --- stay tuned...
