Sop, I uninstalled the Unofficial Replacement Tools from A/R, the "monitor" icon is no longer there but I also no longer have the 7 choice "Shut Down" option anymore. Even when I click on the "Start" button, then click on "Shut Down", nothing happens, just a quick flash. I have to use "Ctl-Alt-Delete" to get the window where I can click on the "Shut Down" box that works. Has the Unofficial Replacement Tools uninstall, gone too far. How Can I get this 7 choice dialogue back. Thanks, Ken.
pixturesk
Sop. You ought to be happy with my the new "techie" abilities you have been teaching me. By checking the info page in AP, I saw that Tihy's Tools9X hotfix controls all the items in the above message, so I re-install it, got the Shut Down functionality back again, as well as, the systray monitor icon which is OK (thought it was using too many resources, which I see it is not) if there is no easy way to uninstall it. I guess that I am actually learning this stuff. All the best, Ken.

i tested hard the shockwaves and i found that the versions

10.2.022 and 10.2.023 are Stable newest 10.3.024 is crashy for Win 98 will wait for the next newer one to test
so soporific you can add the 10.2.023 to AP Feb.
Eck
Looks like Adobe either took down the newer Shockwave or it detects that I have Windows 98SE. All roads there now lead to 10.2.023, the one that appears to work well.

Of course, that's the one to include in the next Auto-Patcher, the full version download I would say but I'm not sure which you've been using.

The folks who have had Java 6 Update 4 problems I think should be aware that it's been an interoperability issue with the latest Flash for some time using any Sun Java and the new Flash version. I think Java 5 users experience the same thing. It's something for Adobe to fix, I think. No need to go back to the old Java if it doesn't make a difference.

I found in System Information that I do still have 2 instances of that ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering who's registry entry apparently has something wrong that makes it show as not functioning properly. I know not to bother troubleshooting this on this motherboard as it has always shown those even if I remove all the devices and have them redetected. They just show up again. But everything works and there are no blips in Device Manager. The HP Device Manager that comes with my scanner does show a whole slew of those ACPI IRQ Holder things with blips. There's no fix for it that I'm aware of. Not an Auto-Patcher problem, but included with my feedback and suggestions comes my progress and ranting. smile.gif

Adobe pulled the new version. On an XP SP2 PC, I get version 10.2.0.023.

Soporific, I replied to your two PMs from earlier today, and apart from the fact that I couldn't find any way to attach files to the message, when I looked in my "sent items" box it appears to be an empty message!
I don't know WTF is going on with this, did you get the message OK?
Cheers, Dave.

@barbarien & bristols:
Thanks a lot for the download sites and the cool Shockwave test. You rock! thumbup.gif

@bristols:
Are you actually using 10.2.0.23? Whats your experience with it? After the sad experience I had with 10.3.0.24 I'm wary of upgrading Shockwave, but I reckon that maybe 10.2.0.23 is the last fully working version for Win 9x. Please advise.

Hi dencorso,

I've had 10.2.0.23 installed for almost 6 months with no problems whatsoever (just to confirm what others here are saying).

Just checked the Shockwave pages. It seems indeed as Eck says that Adobe has removed 10.3.0.24 and reverted to 10.2.0.23.

Lots of thanks to all of you for answering so promptly. You all rock! thumbup.gif
So Shockwave 10.2.0.23 is the way to go (and even Adobe recognized it!!! smile.gif ).

Installs perfectly, thanks smile.gif

Dave-H,

Try what I used to do before the Environment Space Fix put stuff in Autoexec and config.sys. Delete the lines from there, as the Revolution Pack disagrees with them. Running the fix again will just put them back. Gotta get Auto-Patcher to run without out it.

So, look in C:\Program Files\Auto-Patcher (or, wherever it's installed).

Find the .bat file that the shortcut points to and right click it and choose Properties.

On the memory tab raise the drop down for environment space to a higher number. I can't remember, but I think I used to do it to all the .bat files I saw in there. But try it with just the one that starts the thing first. I think it's:

START_ME.BAT

If you still get the out of environment space error then try doing that to all the .BAT files you see in there. As long as any of those are run they will obey whatever settings you put into its pif (or Program Information File).
Eck
Well I just installed my saved copy of Shockwave 10.2.022 because all the download links there SAY they are giving you 10.2.023 but they REALLY give you 10.3.CRASHANDBURN.

You can right click the downloads and they are all that newer buggy version, even thought the directory it is downloading it from is the 10.2 one. I found out when Firefox crashed with it and then I checked the version.

Apparently they meant to go back to the older version but they put the same newer files in there I guess by accident.

So I can't even get the latest 10.2 version because .022 is all I've got. I'll deal. They'll fix it and update I'm sure.

At least I won't crash.
soporific
Hey everyone,

I've been following the discussion avidly and i've come to the conclusion that my previous fears about more incompatibilities for our dear old OS are coming true. Never again will i simply add a new update to Auto-Patcher without waiting some time to see if its any good. Stability is the key here. I've noted the conclusions down and i will get a new version of AP out soon. Cheers, keep the discussion going.
Eck
Heh heh. More excitement. I did have to clean house. I got 10.2.023 from filehippo.com but the uninstall and reinstall, and the reboot asked for left Shockwave without some needed file.

So I used the Shockwave 8 and 10 uninstallers in the System/Macromed folder, and the downloaded Flash Uninstaller. I clicked all the entries of them in Add/Remove Programs and when it couldn't find uninstallers I let it remove the entries. I checked out the Windows Components tab and saw that the Shockwave entries are no longer available. Then I deleted the contents of that Macromed folder and restarted the computer.

I went to Adobe in Internet Explorer and had it install Flash. I installed my downloaded Flash for Firefox installer. I installed my downloaded Shockwave 10.2.023 from filehippo.

All is now perfect and the tests on their site work.

Soporific, I really suggest that the best way for folks to get the latest Flash and Shockwave on their machines is to go and download and install the stuff themselves. I can't see it working correctly with the fresh stuff installed immediately with Auto-Patcher right after a new installation unless perhaps if nothing that is installed includes their own older Flash and Shockwave versions. Once they are on there (Flash 7 and Shockwave 8), they really need a cleaning of the house, wiping all of that, before the new versions can install properly on a Flash and Shockwave barren machine.

Sheesh, their Adobe Reader just gave me fits getting it upgraded. The downloader they use couldn't write the second update into the \Windows\Application Data folder they use. The first worked, but from then on only my going to their site and clicking the updates tab and downloading each one myself and installing them worked. Something was interfering with their updater downloading the files to that folder. I could see the incomplete 0 bit file there.

Anyway, all updated now.

Okay, I thought everything was running fine with Dec 2007 Final...
However, since I updated (only JSCRIPT.DLL was newer for me), I got an empty square window appear often while using Internet Explorer.
I had to close it (using the 'X') to continue.
I figured it was probably when JSCRIPT.DLL was being called?
It sounds a bit like what some others have posted recently.
However, I did not get any installing or crashing, just an empty window.
So... I deinstalled Java 6 Update 4 and reinstalled Update 3 that I had earlier.
I also back-dated JSCRIPT.DLL to the previous version I had, then de-registered and re-registered it, and rebooted.
No change!
This is really weird since at this point everything should be as it was when it worked!!!
Rolling forward again, I removed Java 6 Update 3 and reinstalled Update 4, and reinstalled the Unofficial Scripting 5.6 update again.
No change as expected.
So! I downloaded the Unofficial Scripting 5.7 update from MDGx and installed it.

...No problems so far!

The only thing that bugs me is that I recall some discussion a while ago regarding Scripting 5.7 having problems in Windows 98SE...
I'll have to locate the discussion and see what the issues were.

The conclusion is that I do not know what made my 98SE go silly on me... But Scripting 5.7 fixed it...

On a side note, I also found that Windows was creating a bootlog.txt files every time I used Windows and updating it during use and closing Windows.
All this was adding some overhead to Windows.
I had one font error (explained in another topic) that I resolved, but this did not stop the bootlog.txt being created.
In the end I had to put the Disablelog=1 option in the MSDOS.SYS file...
I had noticed the logging over some time, but thought maybe it was from a crash or something...
I don't know when it started doing this... Maybe RP7 or 98SE2ME?

Anyone else noticed continuous boot logging?

Okay, I thought everything was running fine with Dec 2007 Final...

Well, there's a few issues...

* one is that the Unofficial Scripting Update 5.6 is the one causing that message about needing to download 0 bytes to install it. Using the 'never download it' option seems to fix this but i haven't tested extensively.

* two, the Unofficial Scripting Update 5.7 is still causing errors for my CSCRIPT.EXE scripts so i can't include it in UBCD and i'm reluctant to include it in AP without further testing.

I'm in two minds about what to do with this.
Eck
What you could do is make a module especially for the scripting update. Make the default of Auto-Patcher to install the older official Scripting 5.6 update. Make a toggle available for installing the Unofficial 5.7, which would explain that it is experimental and to only install if compatibility is desired for newer technologies. This would install 5.7 instead of the 5.6 update. Certainly remove that unofficial 5.6 as it is obviously not working well. If we tell Internet Explorer not to install when it asks, we won't have the scripting support so that is not a desired option, even if it removes the nagging. So the Unofficial 5.6 really shouldn't be used.

5.7 works fine, as far as I know. My software has been installing fine with a few exceptions, if scripting does have anything to do with it.

That Adobe Reader updater not being able to write to that folder, PowerDVD 6 not being able to run the latest update (but I installed the older 2003e update and it worked fine). It is possible that the latest one can't install on 98SE but they removed the older update anyway. It complains about not being able to run setup, but when I extracted the update with WinRAR and ran setup myself, that runs, but just like the compressed download it complains that it could not run setup. I think it's a setup within the setup? Whatever, PowerDVD works fine with the 2003e update and I think that the latest one is some minor single update and not the whole thing anyway. The file is much smaller than the 2003e update is. I don't think it includes the previous fixes and that makes it just a blunder on their part that they removed the 2003e update from the download section.

And DivX Media Filter made a complaint that it had errors, but it works fine in Windows Media Player. It just doesn't offer the system tray icon like it does on XP/Vista. Maybe that's what it didn't successfully install, but it isn't really needed. Windows Media Player uses the DivX 5.21 codec to play the files and it even did the usual check for update the first time and shows the DivX watermark briefly when the playback starts. That's how I know it's using the DivX codec from them rather than the one installed by PowerDVD 6 Deluxe.

Don't know whether some of those install errors were due to Scripting or not. The Adobe one was strange, but the others could be explained by the installers expecting Windows XP stuff.

Nero, RealPlayer, QuickTime, Java, Flash and Shockwave (once I cleaned it out and started fresh) had no problems installing and running.

I'd leave Sun Java, Flash, and Shockwave out of Auto-Patcher. These are all better left to the user to get and install.
RetroOS
Hi soporific,
Did you ever compile the system tweaks, specifically the caching and RAM limit tweaks, that you established from the VCACHE topic?
Also, look at my post regarding settings for 1.5GB of RAM - these have been working flawlessly ever since.
I know that the AP settings are currently wrong for 1.5GB of RAM...
Eck
That maybe the next thing I look into. I turn off those tweaks in Auto-Patcher (or don't turn them on if they are off by default) because 98SE2ME puts in the traditional ones that Gape's pack always did anyway. I just do the VCACHE max to 393216 at the first boot after install so it won't have a problem with my 1 Gig of Ram. I notice he doesn't do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage =1 anymore and I didn't add it. I did make my min and max virtual memory customized to 3X my Ram right away too. I'll check out that thread to see what folks are doing now.

I just installed Norton Utilities 2002 to my 250GB hard drive that's one big partition installed with 120GB then expanded to about 191 usable by PartitionMagic. I ran DiskDoctor, had it fix what it found, rebooted, and ran SpeedDisk. I just set it not to optimize the swap file. I already customized it and don't want it to mess with that.

I turned off the Surface Scan too. As long as things are working I'd rather not sit and wait while it checks out the unpartitioned space.

Things haven't blown up! But I guess I won't really know if it trashed anything (regarding 48bit LBA addressing) unless I start getting a lot of weird problems. I haven't run WinDoctor yet. Not sure I believe in that kind of thing anymore. In the old days I used to let it whirl away at the registry but I figure if it isn't broke, don't fix (break) it.

Haven't run 98 in a while and got used to a zillion things loading at startup not really bothering XP, Vista, or of course Linux. I'm going to have to look into that though. I have eleven system tray icons and I startup with about 41% resources free. Goes down to the 30's quick when I start doing things. That might not be the best way to run 98, eh?

For security I have Avast Home set to its defaults with the email scanner and all its web stuff on and ZoneAlarm with the email, virus scanner detection and alerts off.

I'm wondering what to do about Spyware detection. I always used Spybot Search and Destroy but I've been reading that the new version is broken on 98SE. Not only that, but the older one automatically updates it to the new, broken version. I'll try to read their forums to see what people are doing. I know I need something. Ad-Aware stopped supporting 98SE but I used to prefer Spybot S&S anyway, although sometimes I used them both. Now it looks like either is a hassle to use. And the Yahoo Toolbar stuff (haven't bothered with it yet and would rather not) doesn't include the Spyware detector on 98SE either. What do we do? Gotta have something to scan and remove that stuff if we catch anything. Kind of miss McAfee, as their stuff includes spyware detection and removal. But their last 98SE version was just a hassle with its messing up their updating process using wininit and writing the file incorrectly. I had to make sure to delete the nonsense they wrote and keep the correct lines every update. Well, I let all of the subscriptions for it expire and canceled the automatic renewals.

Out of the Auto-Patcher topic, but then we're not too many folks now and where else but here can we ramble on about Windows 98?

Edit -

I installed Spybot Search and Destroy 5.2 (latest) to see. It went fine! I unchecked to have it update while installing, unchecked SDHelper and TeaTimer (never use TeaTimer and I immunize after the first update), and told it not to run after the install. I restarted the computer, went through the wizard, got all updated and immunized, ran a scan and it removed the usual stuff it does to a fresh Windows installation, and all is well.

Gotta say that maybe turning everything on and running right away and not rebooting might be one of the things causing the new version troubles in 9x systems. Maybe my treading gently and carefully made it register what it needed properly.

Then again, maybe it's dumb luck or a newer version of the program. I just downloaded it before installing.

Hi All ...

... just wanted to ad that I am using Shockwave Full v10.2.023 and Flash Player 9.0.115.0 (IE) from FileHippo and both are working just fine in my two Win 98SE notebooks. I also use Proxomitron and have tested both Shockwave and Flashplayer at the test sites mentioned a few posts back. I have downloaded Autopatcher (Oct 2007) but have never used it ... just Gape's older v2.1a and Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.2.50 for Windows 98SE. I do like the Auto-Patcher project by Soporific but I don't need everything that's in it ... so I update using the two I mentioned earlier. Maybe there are some conflicts with programs and Shockwave and Flashplayer ... but the latest versions seem to be working for me.
A question for Sop and maybe just some information for some. I have stayed with the older WMP v6.4 but have installed the K-Lite Codec Package v3.4.5 (Full) with Media Player Classic ... this is the "last" version that will work with Win 98SE. Have you ever thought of adding this nice codec package to Auto-Patcher ... and I just mention it in case others have never heard of it. It is on FileHippo.

duffy98
Eck
That's not the latest version of Shockwave. The latest, and the one in the current Auto-Patcher is 10.3.023. Quite buggy. Adobe changed the file name in the links to 10.2.023 (previous, working version) but neglected to have it point to the named version. It still downloads the buggy 10.3 version. So File Hippo is a good place to get that working 10.2.023 one, like I did.

One doesn't need a codec pack to get MediaPlayerClassic. And one doesn't need to trust a 3rd party codec pack to play various file formats in any preferred player. Folks who don't like the commercial versions of RealPlayer and QuickTime can choose to install RealAlternative and QuickTimeAlternative. DivX 5.2.1 works on 9x and there is a web plugin and format filter that has been tweaked to install on 9x and plays the on line DivX videos just fine. But if you want the player you should update the one installed with 5.2.1 to the 6.2 update.

The Auto-Patcher offers the legacy Windows Media Player 7 , the Windows Media Encoder 7, and Windows Media Player 9 along with a combined install that installs the Microsoft Windows Media Player Codecs for the 9 Series Player, updating the package with the additional codecs included in the Windows Media Player 9 and 10 on XP.

If you want to do without the newer Windows Media Player versions, Microsoft offers a codec package for the Windows Media Player 6.4 called something like Windows Media Player 9 codecs for the 6.4 player. Then of course there is MediaPlayerClassics ability to be tweaked to replace the 6.4 player and have even more codecs.

FFDSHOW is constantly updated to include the latest versions of codecs. It is customizable so you can turn off its native codecs for most things and only use it for the obscure codecs not otherwise available on Windows. I don't install it unless I need it for one of those.

Nero 7 Ultra installs a ton of codecs, as does PowerDVD 6 Deluxe. But if one does not want to purchase things then the stuff mentioned above can provide similar.

The afterdawn.com and free-codecs.com sites offer tons of different codecs and software to play and encode.

Auto-Patcher likely cannot stay completely patent compliant if it starts including 3rd party codec packages and players that sometime include patented IP that is not free to distribute by anyone other than the patent holder and its licensed distributors. Plus, some include nasty spyware. So including that stuff is highly unlikely. If you want it, install it on your own.

Eck
Hmm.

Soporific, try installing the Maximus-Decim latest MDAC updater he released recently (like yesterday I think). I have no idea if it would have an effect on your problems after installing the Unofficial Scripting 1.7, but after installing it Winamp Pro 5.35 (with the in_cdda_5.34) stopped having several problems opening plugin configurations like the Direct Sound output plugin and also some playback problems.

I think there's stuff he has in there that 98SE needs to work with various things. No idea what, or which things, but it fixed that Winamp problem for me.

Might want to consider it for the manual installs folder. It's always helped me easily get MDAC stuff on properly and now it's been updated to the most recent items.

Now, there's something that's a real system update that everyone would likely get benefits from.

I agree. i initially baulked at the lack of a true silent switch but i've just used AutoIT to get around it for inclusion in my latest version of UBCD and so i may as well chuck it in AP. It adds quite a few updates up and above what AP gives you so its madness not to use it. New AP version coming soonish... thanks for the heads up re: the new version.

Hi Ken,

In Control Panel, from Add/Remove programs, uninstall the Unofficial Improved Replacement Tools.

Cheers,
Sop.
Better late than never...

To stop Connections Systray (on the right) from running:
- Double-click on TOOLS9SU.REG
- Reboot
- Program can be still be accessed via
"Connection_Manager Network Connections Replacement Tool"
in Start Menu->Programs->Accessories->System Tools
(shortcut may be copied into main menu anywhere within "Windows\Start Menu"

To reinstate Systray execution (what automatically happens during install)
- Double-click on TOOLS9SI.REG
- Reboot

TOOLS9SU.REG -

It also seems that this little tool causes a WINIPCFG.EXE failure since it "hooks" the info (try it and you'll see what I mean). I just "uninstall" the REG entry and use it at-will from the "System Tools" selection...

HTH

(will this "break" anything else? responses anyone?)

I'm not sure about Mike Lin's StartupCPL, but Codestuff Starter definitely allows enabling/disabling the said service with a single click. Key name is SysTray and value is a class string followed by stobject.dll. Not to be mistaken with key name SystemTray and value SysTray.exe, which is Windows' default system tray.

I wouldn't be surprised! Auto-Patcher wasn't any good until the June 2007 SP2 release whistling.gif but, my dear friend, there have been many many releases since that version, why haven't you uprgraded? Is it purely the download size? Use a download manager that has a resume function. If not, please grab the December 2007 final edition and see if you have any problems with that.

Dr. Web ... never heard of it ... AP has been going for about a year and i've never had a complaint about possible viruses ... so going on that, i think Dr Web is having you on !!!

Hi Sophorific - just to let you know - STILL -Dr. Web (a very respectable virus detection program) Counterspy (another) are still flagging several known malware and virus - that seem to come from auto-patcher, (as the fellow who posted the above indicated). I assume it's false positives. but, perhaps these vendors should be contacted in some way to be made aware of these being legit - so this issues will be put to rest.

The ones that were found on my machine were:
NICRMD.EXE -BACKDOOR.TERRABIT (LISTED BY BOTH ABOVE PROGRAMS AS KNOWN MALWARE)
MAINCODE.BAT
START_ME.BAT
START_DEBUG.BAT
You are probably already aware of all this and maybe it's even been addressed here.

Soporific, I'm sorry about my mistake, i meant to say DEC 2007 Final....my mind was somewhere else tongue.gif

but the problem is the same, it seems to be stuck at installing Internet Explorer 6...

Could VMware 6 be the reason? (I'm testing the Autopatcher in a virtual machine)

Yes, definitely possible --- i used VMs all the time to test out my projects and i get all sorts of weirdness that isn't there when i check on a real machine. Please, only reports from real machines.

Sorry if I'm addressing something old or thats been solved.

Mikey, you're encountering a growing problem where perfectly legal files are being flagged by who knows and they are suddenly flagged as being suspicious. It is a complete and utter waste of time for all concerned. If this is isn't a good example of the insanity of capitalism, i don't know what is.

eg. NICRMD.EXE (i think you meant NIRCMD.EXE) -- is made by a great friend of freeware developers called Nir Sofer and here's where you can download NIRCMD.EXE -- http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html
MAINCODE.BAT, START_ME.BAT, START_DEBUG.BAT are my babies. They are simply text files that have the extension .bat meaning they are executable. And for this crime, they are labelled as malware. This really sucks! I refuse to waste time with these issues. Thanks for listening.

Thanks for the prompt response and explanation.
I don't think 'capitalism' has much to do with the mis-diagnosis, as Dr Web is a Russian program shifty.gif .. but I agree, a lot of these 'anti-virus' people tend to flag anything they don't recognize or are suspicious of, without fully researching.
As I suggested , maybe you should send them a memo of explanation on these flaggings, so that this issue is put to rest once and for all.
I fear that down the road , you (and your wonderful Auto-patcher) might be blamed for 'problems' that your program didn't cause, because of these false positives.

It would be terrible to see all your hard work get a public beatdown, based on a false perception.

just sayin'

The false positives are dealt with by most virus detections manufacturers once users inform them of the problem. Some scanners allow ignoring, some automatically delete them and inform the user, some automatically delete them and don't tell the user or tell them after the fact. I like the ones that say there's a bad thing here and give you options as to what to do with them. Often you can let it quarantine them and then afterwards restore them from the quarantine folder.

So the best thing to do is to report these to the manufacturer of the software. Sometimes they'll remove them from the definitions if they agree it was false.

I don't think it's a problem with programs like Auto-Patcher using stuff that gets detected by virus scanners that aren't the major ones like McAfee, Norton, AVG, Avast, Bit-Defender, etc. Especially if they are things run during the running of Auto-Patcher. Virus scanners should be disabled from running at startup when using Auto-Patcher anyway, since it will reboot many times before finishing. Just turning them off doesn't help if it will reload upon Windows startup. With Avast, I need to go into the Resident Shield options and in Advanced turn everything to disabled at startup. Once done with Auto-Patcher I go back in and enable them all. I used to do similar with McAfee.

By the way, I installed the integrated Windows Vista Service Pack 1 DVD replacing 98SE just to check out Service Pack 1 and also the recent unofficial Audigy 2 ZS Vista Support Pack done by a guy on the Creative forum (an updated version -I installed the missing pieces afterwards using his Revision 2 Cd). So my 98SE is gone for now. sad.gif I'll get it back on VMWare soon I suppose. The Auto-Patcher had everything updated great though! Sorry to say goodbye for now to 98 again.

MikeyHunt
yeah, my post was suggesting to Sopo that he might want to waste a few minutes submitting the info to the programs that are showing the false positives.
Once one or two get it and stop flagging them, the others always seem to pickup up the info (funny how that works).
My concern was that his great program might get falsely blamed for some crazy SHlT if he doesn't preemptively act and notify some of these vendors.
Eck
Good point! Someone, at least, should report the false positives.

I recall that the RyanVM Windows XP Post Service Pack 2 Update Pack and RyanVM addon changed a few programs included in it and ways of installing stuff to stop being detected as bad things by most spyware programs, not that they did any spying.

They were just long standing tools that unfortunately could also be used for bad stuff even though they weren't in this case. He just took out the tools and installed stuff a bit differently.

That was a few years back and I forget the names of the programs, but he was quite interested in the problem you're talking about and took his own action to prevent a bad reputation.

I'm playing around with 98SE on Virtualbox in Linux again, so I was wondering what was happening here as well. It's still not as good for 98SE as VMWare but I don't have the Workstation for Linux version and $189 is kinda hard to budget for. I'm not sure if my older hardware can use Server or not, and I'd prefer Workstation anyway. Qemu confuses me, so I'm seeing if Virtualbox can be tinkered with enough to get me some better performance. Sun just put out their first version of it so that's what I'm trying.

I installed December Full without some of the stuff since upgraded over time and will install those individually I suppose. One thing that takes absolutely hours to finish is that DotNET installation. On VMWare it's just like on a real system but on Virtualbox it takes a LONG time. I'm just trying stuff like the new SB16 ISA audio card in Virtualbox, that appears to increase Virtualbox performance over the normal Intel sound chip. No Midi, since there's no real SB16 midi chip to address and the mpu401 doesn't install, and isn't supported by emulators anyway. The Intel softsynth works, but not well, so I don't miss much by using the SB16 instead. I'm gonna try installing either (or both) the Roland VSC1 or the Yamaha YXG-50 soft synths and see whether my old games will be able to use them as drivers as they can on a real 98 system. I removed the extra stuff the SB16 Creative cd (from my real SoundBlaster 16 Wave Effects retail box, same driver) puts in autoexec.bat because that's for dos and Windows midi I think, and the dos sound doesn't work anyway. I'll just be using Windows games in there. The Blaster line stays as the driver puts it back even if I edit it out, but doesn't start TSR's like the config.sys Devices they have that run the Creative dos stuff.

But the SB16 instead of the Intel is a bit zippier. I also removed the ACPI support from the virtual machine. When I loaded the ACPI Bios device in Windows it caused the mouse and keyboard devices to conflict so I figured I'd try the old Standard PC way. So I just leave the Advanced Power Management (which is also shown as not working properly) instead of switching it to ACPI Bios and power off the machine from the program since Windows can't fully shut down when that isn't working properly. But that's better than the mouse and keyboard having problems.

Virtualbox is REALLY not designed to get all the devices working perfectly in 9x Device Manager. VMWare does that perfectly. They just virtualize the hardware for the modern NT systems and we're lucky 98 works at all. Nice of them to include the new SoundBlaster 16 ISA emulation as that does play smoother and uses less resources for some reason. You'd think the AC97 Intel chip would use less than a ISA card, but go figure. Not sure what'll happen when I add a midi soft synth to the running audio stuff. At least the SB16 works out of the box as 98 has the driver for it. The update on the Creative cd (or the similar downloaded update from Creative) is essentially the same driver, but adds those autoexec.bat lines, recommends the config.txt stuff it installs to its folder be added to config.sys (the ones I tried and removed later when dos sound didn't work anyway), and includes all the Creative software, the mixer, Wave, midi players, you know, the old Win 3.1 SB16 audio deck type software working on 98. Kinda cool. Realtek doesn't include that stuff with its Win95 VXD AC97 driver I had used for the Intel chip that 98 doesn't have a driver for. So now I have the fancy Creative players and mixers to play with.

I get really slow OpenGL support with the Scitech 7 beta video driver as long as Direct X is updated. Nice addition by using Scitech that even VMWare doesn't offer with its tools. Kinda weird seeing glxgears spinning around on Windows! But 2D works nicely.

Web browsing was too slow with the older configuration, but we'll see what happens since the audio driver switch and the Standard PC instead of ACPI. I also changed the Ethernet card to the older PCI one they added. Maybe that'll work better than the one designed for higher bandwidth that was the previous default. It's good Virtualbox added some choices. There's another one for Vista as Vista doesn't have a driver for the previous default. They include a separate driver for a manual install, but just switching the machine to use the Intel Ethernet card makes Vista internet work out of the box. Don't see myself emulating Vista though. But now there are choices of 3 cards so maybe one of them will increase the speed to be acceptable for web browsing.

This is the first time I installed the full Virtualbox instead of OSE, so I'll see if that new Maximus-Decim NUSB update will get USB 2.0 working so I can use my printer and gamepad. That would be cool. They work fine in VMWare with the NUSB drivers.

Since I nearly never boot into Vista, I'm trying to see if I could just have only Linux installed and virtualize 98SE on it. If I can get 98 working okay on Linux this way I could just wipe out Vista and only run Linux. I really don't use anything but older 98 era Windows software on Windows anyway, doing just about everything in Linux. I have the newer stuff installed in Vista, but never boot into it to use it. Windows 98 running gives me a nostalgic smile. Windows Vista running gives me a headache. smile.gif I'd have room to virtualize either XP or Vista if I did that, without the hassle of dual-booting. Now, the whole big 250GB hard drive is sitting with Vista taking up space. Or, just use the 120GB drive Linux is on for a real 98SE and put Linux on the big drive and just virtualize XP or Vista. Probably XP since I only have a gig of RAM and I don't see Vista virtualizing well with 512MB. XP would do fine.

But, yeah, what's up Soporific? You okay? I check back here every so often and don't see posts from you lately. Hope everything is all right with you! Don't care about the Autopatcher as long as you're doing okay. smile.gif (But a freshening of Autopatcher would be nice if so.)

Drugwash
Personally I've built a couple of test machines out of scrap, because testing in virtual environment will never yield reliable results as opposed to real stuff. So no reason for me to waste time.
How expensive could be a Pentium I mobo with a 200MHz CPU and 64 MB of SDRAM, for such tests?
As for much newer hardware... that'd also be better to test for real, especially in terms of drivers compatibility and availability.
My ¢2 worth of an opinion...
Eck
I've got all the older computers lying around I could want. I just only have this one workspace to actually have to use one on though.

Heh, and you could call it testing but, for me and what I do, especially with Windows 98, it is more like playing at this point. Just taking a trip down memory lane and having some fun. Seems to me a virtual machine should be okay for something like that.

Really though, the reason I don't just have one of my old boxes setup and running 98 is it's a pain in the neck to unplug my computer and all its stuff and move another box to the desk to replace it and hook all the stuff up to that one. I just don't have the space in this little Florida Room (kind of like a small porch) that is the part of the small one bedroom condo that I have EVERYTHING in. My bed, computer, TV, books, cd's, tapes, desk, it is all in a little walk in closet sized room. And with all the stuff I have it's not a pretty site! Stacks of software boxes (I save everything), big stacks of printouts of stuff that most would likely have file cabinets for, etc. Old computers underneath things, etc, etc, I needn't go on.

I just would like to get 98 working well enough to occasionally use for some old thing I have a yen to use. Sure, it would likely work better on a real old machine but then I'd want to get some real stuff done and need to switch around all the hardware again? I don't think that's something I'd want to do.

This computer actually runs 98 fine. I feel like a dunderhead switching it out for Vista a while back. The only problem was that NVidia shutdown thing. Really a minor bug. I've got an ATI card without that problem, but then there's Linux and that's the reason for NVidia being on here instead. Happily I've discovered Linux and have found it fully capable of doing the things I need or want to do on my computer. I just like having some Windows available just in case. Kind of a crutch I guess. Or a habit. I was so used to keeping up with the Microsoft operating systems and software over the years that with the Vista/Office upgrades I went along with the flow. Seems silly to me now that I spend no time actually using the stuff.

Edit -

Ah well. Virtualbox and 98 really isn't a good enough combo for me. Went through more of the setting up 9x process and just found it too slow. Not as slow as the older Virtualbox versions, probably because of the sb16 using less resources (again weird, since AC97 should be less resource intensive than ISA), but still just not good enough. Plus I couldn't get the USB going. Installed the HP drivers and software, activated the USB device for the printer, and although the USB port driver was working with the nUSB installed I couldn't get the specific printer device detected. Probably a Linux permissions problem but as I wasn't going to keep using it anyway, I just deleted the virtual drive. If I use it, I'll use it for OS's Virtualbox supports better.

I'll either install VMWare into Vista or replace Vista with a 98SE/XPPro dual-boot. VMware runs 98 real zippy in Vista as I've done that before. But I also think I'd actually use 98 unlike what I do with Vista, and doing an actual install will get full performance, 3D games and stuff going. And XP would be just for some stuff I bought that doesn't run in 98 and I just figure I might as well use if I bought it. Plus, 98SE is easier to dual-boot with XP than Vista even when using EasyBCD and Vista. I just use BootMagic and keep the other OS hidden like PartitionMagic does by default. BootMagic also boots my Linux on the other hard drive that has Grub installed into its root partition, like EasyBCD does, instead of messing with my mbr. I hate Grub in the mbr.

Auto-Patcher still works like a dream, saving a ton of time. Just adding the latest updates from the other sticky thread with the updates worked just fine.

Here's a less expensive alternative to VMWare that you may want to try:
Parallels Workstation for Windows & Linux

Phil

P.S. How does QEMU confuse you?
Eck
Only the sort of confusion that happens before doing a more thorough look at things. The qemulator GUI looks promising, but still not as pointy, clicky as the Virtualbox, VMWare GUI's. From briefly looking at some reviews and photo shots of qemulator it looks like I'd need to know device numbers to type in, choices to decide upon that are automatically set on the other emulators for the specific operating systems based upon pre-defined optimizations without my needing to tinker to figure out what works best.

It's like using exim or something rather than Thunderbird. Gotta tell exim what to do without the benefit of pretty GUI wizards and stuff. Since Thunderbird is what I got accustomed to, I haven't bothered with learning the traditional Linux based email programs. Same with Qemu vs the others. Things are probably less complex than they seem but if something already works fine for me, I only briefly gloss over information for other things. Enough for me to know they exist and give a quick glance at, but not the same as actually going through the steps to learn the software.

So it's only complicated because I haven't taken those steps to eliminate the complications through some study and use.

Thanks for asking. I don't have anything specific that I'm confused about. Just the knowledge that the GUI based virtualization software with their mostly pre-defined schemes is, by personal use, less confusing to me as a bystander just checking out Qemu.

I have a problem after using AutoPatch98. At log on screen I get the error message "error cannot find TcpMib.dll". The MS KB solution is to remove TcpMUI.dll, TcpMon.dll, TcpMib.dll and another one that I cannot remember. There was no TcpMib.dll file. Basic 98SE doesn't use it. Kept the HPTcp*.dll printer files because they were on 4-5 days before this started. Of course, it didn't work..

Have been working at MS 98SE Community on this. Did suggested search for files containing TcpMib.dll to see what was calling for the file and found the following:

System.dat, User.dat, HPTcpMib.dll, HPTcpMon.dll, HPTcpMui.dll

Uninstalled the printer.

A selective startup with Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, System.ini, Win.ini and Startup Group unchecked still gives the the no TcpMib.dll error.

Could one of the installs from AutoPatch98 be causing this?

Working on my daughter's GW Essential667(y2000); PentiumIIIE, 667MHz; MB Intel Willow Springs 2 WL810E; running 98SE Ver. 4.10.2222A; IE 6.0 SP1. Have installed new power supply and DVD Burner and hooked up my HP PSC 1410v.

Started with clean reinstall and was updating components slowly. Using IE 5 and Update v3. Loaded IE 6.0 and updates for it. Next day when I went into Update asked if wanted to go to Update v4. Clicked ok and got screen that said I had to be an Administrator to use Update. Tried all fixes at MS and am still locked out. Update Support no help because 98SE. So until I find a cure I am locked out of Windows Update.

QUOTE (dlsayremn @ May 20 2008, 04:29 PM) *
...So until I find a cure I am locked out of Windows Update...

Auto-Patcher 98 has everything on Windows Update and more including many newer updates.
Even though Windows Update for 9x is no longer updated, Microsoft are still updating components like IE6 SP1 and WMP 9.

Regarding your original problem, it would appear that some update in Auto-Patcher 98 has affected something...

tcpmib.dll is titled as "Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor Helper DLL".
It is not native to 98SE and from what I can tell, it has never been a 9x file...
It most certainly is a reference from the printer driver.
Have you run Auto-Patcher 98 again to check that everything is up to date?
Also, did you install KernelEx or Revolutions Pack? (If so, these two could possibly be interacting)

whistling.gif look in Auto-Patcher=Manual Installs=WU_FIX,depending on system you are using(Win98SE?).There is a Microsoft updater file in side,as this, ususally works on older machines, too! thumbup.gif

Thanks for your suggestions.

The problem is solved for now. Still not sure what caused it.
Have been working with some people over at MS Communities on this and wanted to print out instructions from a couple of posts. I reinstalled the printer that I had uninstalled. Printer worked right, but was eliminating possible sources of tcpmib.dll cal. On reboot the error message was gone. Shut down and rebooted 10 times to check.

The printer is a HP PSC 1410v.

Again thanks for help, DLsayre
