The Complete List of Hotfixes, Updates, and Addons for Windows 98 Second Edition

Index:

1) latest additions and changes
2) the big monster list of hotfixes, both unofficial and official mixed in together, exactly the way to show respect for Bill Gates' proprietory software ideology.
3) the list of incompatible updates
4) the "not really sure" section - if anyone can provide more info on these hotfixes that would be tops.
5) the list of obsolete hotfixes and updates. this is the reason i started this woolly mammoth task. Now you know which hotfixes to just ignore and/or delete and never have to worry about ever again for your "have I got all the updates?" peace of mind.

1. latest additions and changes

Jun 28, 2008:
- Added: WIA, IE947864
- Updated: Q942763, DXM9x, SCR569x, KernelEx, OLEUP, VBVM60, SCR579x, Shockwave, DX CPL tools, USBFDD98, RootsUpd

As always, thanks to MDGx for these updates.

2. the monster list of current hotfixes for Windows 98 second edition

Color scheme - updates are organised into 2 colors:
- blue: these updates are OFFICIAL unmodified hotfixes released by Microsoft
- updates with a * at the end are NOT available from Windows Update

- most (if not all) updates hosted at www.mdgx.com are also not available from Windows Update
- red: these updates are UNOFFICIAL hotfixes released (in the main) by people who frequent MSFN

- updates with # at the end require other updates to be installed first, so read the info!
- the list was originally ordered by kb number, but recently I have just been adding the latest to the top, so the numbers might not be in order.

Is it possible to specify in the first post what updates are localized in various languages / multilanguage?

For hotfixes it seems to be not possible becasue only Microsoft has this information.

One year ago I have prepared a list of files in sesp2.? including the information what fixes are available in what languages, and what files are even in localized Windows English, i.e. need not to be localized:
List of files
List of fixes

I'm trying to collect all localized files for Windows 95/98/98SE/Me and to localize semi-manually 19 languages that are based on US English version. But I don't know if I'll be able to finish this project, it is very time consuming.

NUSB 2.3 is definitely an upgrade over and above USBMTE, all the files are either the same or a higher file version. The only question would be that of stability, i haven't been closely following the development - are there many, if any, reports of incompatibility? As the update relates to hardware devices I would think there could be more scope for things going wrong, but then maybe i'm the one who's wrong smile.gif If its all good, which i'm guessing it is, then yeah, go ahead and take the file down ... sorry to give you extra work!

that i'm aware of.I recommend it to all
it install ipod drivers/the latest cam drivers/USB etc.

They are the same!! q242937 is actually q269601

q242937 is the kb article number, whereas q269601 is what the update is named as when you install it. It's confusing, I know. That's why q242937 is in brackets at the end of the description for q269601

Does this update hold the secret to ever-lasting system stability? Why someone don't make a new version of Unofficial Win98SE with all these updates.
It will be more better than this list of updates.
I have ver. 2.1a from Gape but don't know which files are really included into that installation.
I can't thinking about that.

The AutoPatcher is what you're looking for, for now, if you want Gape's Pack but with today's updates.

I installed Gape's pack before the AutoPatcher and that worked fine. The AutoPatcher does not reinstall updates if they're already there so you'll still need to run some of the Unofficial stuff like 891711, the GDI fix, etc, after doing the AutoPatcher.

There's still potentially going to be a Gape update but there hasn't been anything definative announced as to when.

In the meantime that procedure works fine. And the running of 98SE2ME, 98SE2XP, and the WMP10 for 9x updates afterwards brings you further modernization of the 98 files.

re: Why someone don't make a new version of Unofficial Win98SE with all these updates.
- the entire reason for compiling this list of updates for Win98se was to make sure my autopatcher was fully up-to-date, so, as has already been pointed out, AutoPatcher is what you're looking for ... update 1.5 will be available v.v.v.v. soon
