Hi there, I'm new here. I joined because because this seems to be the place where most Win9x users gather.

I still use Windows 95 OSR 2.5 on my 8 year old PC. Best of all, I modified the install files several months ago so that there's no IE at all! I use SeaMonkey as my browser. Before that, I used to have IE5 on my system (never had IE4, so didn't experience the horror of Active Desktop), even though I wouldn't use it.

I use this PC to surf the web, get e-mail, do IM, play some games, and recently, web design. It does this just fine.

Recently I became aware of Windows 95 updates. However, the resources available didn't offer a comprehensive list of them. So I made one myself based on ERPMan's Windows 95 page. I intend to add unofficial updates later, as well as the USB updates.

Are there others here who still regularly use Windows 95? It seems to mostly be a Windows 98 crowd.

That's a lot of files. How big is the full package?

I went ahead and started applying the updates I felt were needed. But the Year 2000 update didn't work, because my system is Dutch and the patch is for English Windows.

I searched the web, but can't find a place where they still offer it for download.

In my search, I found this page, which offers a fix for the conventional memory problem caused by IO.SYS. Is it legitimate? There's only an unofficial patch by MDGx that I know about.

EDIT: Solved! Look at this gold mine I found with Google while looking for a Dutch version of the MSGSRV32 fix!

nor does 98, or xp in some cases

95 may be old, but its a good OS for very basic things. i still use it on an old laptop of mine, plus a VPC for those old games i love

I used to have a CD with drivers for it and PhotoExpress, but my brother lended it to a friend years ago (**** pirates), and I never saw it back. Recently, after figuring that whining to my brother and parents wouldn't do anything, I called him and asked my CD back. He was going to look for it, but I haven't heard anything back. I'll continue investigating this.

Meanwhile I tried to find drivers on the Internet for it, which I found, but they don't seem to work. Hell, the installation doesn't even detect that I'm on Windows 95 OSR 2.x, and complains about that (though you can choose to continue anyway).

Now the scanner is completely useless as recently my rabbit bit into the power wire (not connected). According to my mom the wire was getting hardened too. I'll have to get a replacement.

USB 1.1 support can be attained on some chipsets with the USB Supplement to OSR 2.x and there ARE WiFi cards that support 9x, all teh way back to 95. It can still be productive - I still use it (in addition to NT3.51 & NT4) on my older computers, especially 486's.

ONLY for Win95 OSR2.x versions B and C. They don't work with the original or OSR1 [version A] editions of Win95.

I did mention in the "unofficial and mcafee" thread in the Unofficial Win98 SE Service pack forum that the last version of McAfee VirusScan to run under Win95 is version 6.02. I kinda liked the older versions of VirusScan since they use less resources. I thought VirusScan 5.21 was the last one supported under Win95 but VirusScan Home Edition 6.02 and VirusScan Professional edition 6.02 do work under Win95. Version 6.02 requires a minimum of Win95B with Winsock 2 + IE 4.01 SP2. I've tested these versions on an old Win95c machine and they work. I did apply the latest DAT updates and used scan engine 5000 RC, not engine 5100. I mentioned in the "unofficial and mcafee" thread that scan engine 5100 does not work correctly under Win95.

there were some unofficial updates I've made for Win95 SR2.x B/C such as the MSINFO95 pack and Unofficial Win95 SR2 URP [update rollup pack]. I made these in my own spare time. these updates are found on MDGx's web site.

I run 95 on an AMD 486-133. The OS is from an upgrade CD, & IE 4.0 came on a separate CD, so did not install it. 95 plug and play rescues old hardware, as the drivers match. Have software and business records back to 1982 on 5.25 disks, and they seem to last better than 3.5's, so use this machine to access them. It works well in DOS and Windows, and runs just about any program that 98FE does. Don't use it on the internet - just pull downloaded files from other machines across the network if needed. It is fast and responsive, up to date for DST.

Sean Erwin's OSR2 FAQ had very useful info about versions B and C of Win95

Win95B or Win95C was also useful on IBM Aptiva machines. anyone who owned an IBM Aptiva computer with pre-installed Win95 SR2.x is very lucky, especially when using the Rapid Resume power management feature which is similar to the hibernation feature found in most modern computers. Alice has a page about IBM Aptiva machines here.

BTW - The final release of K-Meleon 1.1 is out, along with Opera 9.21.

Well I guess I will be joining you guys today in this thread ;-) I just got in something very old and its owner want it restored back in full shine of Windows 95 Glory

Gave me its original "restore cd" by Acer, but its Chinese Traditional version and obviously I can't read it LOL useless.
So here is what I did so far:
Partition for W95 is just 256 MB (yes MB, not GB) then there is half gig for NT4 and 1 gig for shared space where he wants to keep his old DOS games etc.
Due to limited space I figured it would be better to start customizing 95's installation to get rid of the old junk that come with it by default and he wouldn't use it anyways (IE3, Mail-News etc). That took it down to just 70MB after WIn95 completed installation.
Then I installed USB supplement from Companion CD (since there is dual USB port) and drivers for all the devices. Im at 75 MB footprint ATM. I know I need to update it with Y2K stuff (w95y2k, corpupd, y2kvdhcp - have them all ready), but Im not sure what else? He probably won't use it for internet access while on W95 (thats what NT4 will be there), but still I'd like to patch it up and secure, so any input and hints are kindly welcome

Im playing with it ATM, and Im not sure is it just my prejudice againt anything 98

but 95 really feels more stable. I guess removing crap from installation was helpful.
Anyways I will reinstall it, because Im making completely customized Win95 CD for him (with crap removed from disc and from installation .inf and with the drivers and useful soft instead) and I will have to test it on something, so for the sake of testing Im going to inject it with IE5.5SP2 with shell update (I just made nice standalone single executable with options to install with or without "Active Desktop Update" - gotta test it too hehe).

Has anyone notice microsoft's site has nothin left for windows 95?
There are tons of bad links to references etc, you can't even find any old windows update for 95 crap as it used to be - but it is like this only in english, if you choose different language there is still some stuff left, ie euro support is not available on english version, but if you choose other lang. (i went with japanese link) its still there same as before.

I noticed that Win95 searches for uhcd.sys and usbd.sys in precopy1.cab - if i add them to the cab (and update its byte size in installation infs of course etc) will that be a problem since it will be rather large for a 'floppy cab', also what reg entries do i need to add as well? and what about openhci.sys and possibly vfwwdm32.dll (which i noticed someone smart added to package for unofficial usb update)?

And about USB - I dont know why installing USB supplement from companin disc doesnt automatically install drivers for "PCI USB", I have to manually select it and navigate it to the usbd.sys and uhcd in windows folders for it to become the "Standard Universal USB Host..." in the device manager, otherwise it stays in the yelllow question mark as "PCI USB". Is it because I removed something too many from installation? Somehow I don't remember doing it manually in the past when I used "full" unmodified Win95 installations...

I thought that Win95 wasn't going to connect to the Internet? It will only open TCP ports when it needs to, so you don't really need a firewall, at least when it comes to closing ports. Anyway, I believe the good old Kerio 2.1.5 firewall will work on it.

I'm not familiar with the Win2K boot disc, so I'm not sure what you want to do. Some batch wizardry could solve part of it, I guess.

Slipstreaming the USB updates could work. I have no idea what registry entries the updates need, though. Remember that it also installs a different, USB-able kernel. And yeah, I remember something about a PCI USB yellow mark. Not sure what to say about that.

From nt4 today
I never was Win9x fan, even when I had to use it. I never seen worse OS than any of those 95/98/ME series. Reinstalls and crashes on a basically daily basis - I think it sums it up. Im surprised Msoft never shipped it with some ghost/imaging software (so people could quickly and easily 'restore' their win9x harddisk with last saved working config, instead of going thru all that lengthy installation process). IMHO Msoft's reputationsuffered alot after release of win9x (or maybe since win3.x actually).
Except for those old games that need DOS, I really can't see any reason why anyone would use win9x nowadays or in the past since 198/1999 - computers shipped back then already with 64 or memory, enough for NT4 already

Anyways.
What about those DX5 files?
Could anyone kindly check their files and let me know am I missing anything? (see my prev. post)
or give me some hint?

AFAIR W95 will not even install TCP/IP automatically, only NetBEUI. You'll have to add it yourself.

Yes, that's true, sadly. It will also add Netware. When you add the network card at installation, you can immediately remove all that from Network Setup, but if a network card is detected at Windows boot, you don't have control. If you don't insert the CD, though, it won't get fully installed, hehe.

If I were 100% sure this machine would never ever connect to internet, I would say same as Benoit-Ren: "perfect" and wouldn't ask any more stupid questions here

Yes I just did it yesterday.
True, TCP is not installed by default as poster above said, but Netware is (not big problem since it is easily disabled in remove in networking).
However after adding TCPIP i found "enable netbios over tcpip protocol" checkmarked (enabled) and greyed out in the same time (supposedly can't disable) - is that normal?

It's normal if you have NetBIOS or NetBEUI installed, otherwise it isn't, I think. It's unchecked on mine, and not disabled.

I installed USB yesterday evening on my system (finally got a new adaptor for the scanner and finally found the right drivers), and I got a prompt in the process for usbd.sys, but after that everything went smoothly. It's normal, anyway, that even though you just pointed to a folder with your drivers, that when it wants to install them, that it doesn't find them, as it always first looks in the path of your Win95 setup files.

I'd like to confirm that win95 osr2.1 drivers for usb disks are indeed available and working (at least for me). First tested much more than a year ago and last tested a month ago with a new 1GB generic usb disk .....

Hi everyone. I just joined, and felt that I might as well chime in: I use Windows 95 OSR 2.1 regularly on my Pentium III-based PC to this day.

I've gotten somewhat used to being teased and criticized for using (let alone preferring) 95.

I really don't feel any desire to "upgrade" yet, at least out of choice.

Interesting. I did not know Firefox can work with windows 95. It's official requirements is Windows 98, as far as I know.

On the other hand, Opera is working in Windows 95, for sure.

The official "requirements" are nothing more than recommendations: Mozilla Firefox 1.5 and below run great on Windows 95, assuming you have the DCOM95 update and of course a powerful-enough computer.

There's a weird Unicode bug that makes Firefox 2 crash, though.

Firefox's close cousin SeaMonkey makes no qualms about supporting Windows 95, although I personally prefer having the e-mail and browser separate.

I always go with K-Meleon on Win95 boxes.
Perhaps you should give it a try.

I quit installing or even suggesting Firefox since ~1.x versions, IMHo it became too much of bloatware and resource hog. Not to mention the bloated pig 2.0 lol

Nathan's USB driver has been plugged several times before indeed. It's intended mainly for USB flash drives, though. Not USB hard disks.

That, and what they are willing to support. They don't want to support Firefox on Windows 95. I guess people were lucky that it did work fine until 1.5.x, save for a crashing Import Wizard.

Easily resolved by deleting the bmpmenu.dll and rebarmenu.dll plug-ins (names may be slightly different, I'm typing this from memory). At least until K-Meleon 1.0.2. With K-Meleon 1.1, these problems don't exist, but the url bar doesn't work, at least for me.

done! Other Win95 hotfixes that are no longer mentioned in the MS KB articles are Q142254 vtdi.386 4.00.951, Q170325 sysdm.cpl 4.00.1112, Q174733 pcimp.pci 4.00.1113 and Q181087.

Updated dfs.vxd, vnetsup.vxd and vredir.vxd files for Q181087 are version 4.10.1691 noted here:

The Unidrv.dll 4.00.951 file is included in Win95 OSR2. And DCOM95 version 1.3 includes secur32.dll version 4.10.2177.

Q162052 is for OSR2 only and does not work correctly under pre-osr2 releases of Win95. Those using Win95 original or OSR1 should get Q162211 which has vpowerd.vxd version 4.00.952.
