HELLO!
i have been using win me for over 5 years and i have 1050 applications installed.
800 in the programs folderand 200 in the unzipped files folder....
yes thata right 1050 applications...i kid you not...
win me runs very well.its stable fast and responsive...
i discovered the secret to make it like this to disable system restore...disable msn and disable upnp...
upnp makes winme run as a server causing frequent crashes and instability....also disable dcom as well..
once you do the above it becomes very stable...
utilities exist at www.grc.com for you to do this with a single click....
dcombob.exe
shootthemessenger.exe
unpnp.exe
noshare.exe
as a result its fast stable and i can run 8 HEAVY programs at the same time easily...eg soulseek,...dc++...bitseek....mpeg conversion...ao9.0l connect..mozilla and i.e 5.5 and nero 6.00...
all on 512 meg ram...
i can only run 4 HEAVY programs on xp even after all tweaks..
i have a ecs 482 m motherboard and an athlon 3200+ processor....
i have a question though is there sata hard drive support in winme?
or a driver for winme for sata support....
i test ran winme on a sata drive but it was running in dos compatibility mode.. ...
also remember this you can copy/paste the windows folder PLUS tail end root files to another active partition on another hard drive and it will boot!!!
you cant do this with win 2k or xp.
yes thats right!
also you can basically use unstoppable copier freeware to copy c: from one harddrive to another and it will boot!
this means its easy to back up or clone...
in fact i have 3 copies of the winme on 3 partitions on 1 hard drive using bootmagic!!!!
i can boot into any of the 3 partitions!!!!
also i have done experiments with the subfolders in the windows directory...
for example i zip or winrar fonts and cursers and other things not immediately being used and delete the originals in that subfolder...leaving zipped copies in that subfolder....this reduces the file numbers and saves space making it very fast and smooth...remember i have 1050 applications installed....
i suggest some of you try this out after backing your data up.....and report back...
