I used to have this issue, but after reinstalling Windows 95 many months back, it worked again. Now, ever since I installed the USB updates, which includes a newer kernel, Process Explorer doesn't register the CPU usage of the processes anymore. Idle is consistently using 100%.

Is this issue known? Is there a fix? Anything else I can do?

the USB supplement for Win95 OSR2 has buggy kernel files. un-install ALL usb stuff (assuming you're not using ANY usb devices under osr2, BenoitRen) and try Process Explorer again.

latest version of Process Explorer I know of is version 10.21, now available at the Microsoft site (which now owns SysInternals):
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...ssExplorer.mspx

I may test PE under Win95 OSR2.5 WITHOUT the USB Supplement.

I found version 10.20 of Process Explorer.

try these links:

[Win9xME version]

[WinNT4/2000/XP/2003 version]

I'll try searching for older versions of Process Explorer that may work under Win95

BenoitRen, I think you're better off reporting this problem in the SysInternals Process Explorer Forum site.

also you did NOT specify which version of Process Explorer used on your Win95 machine. what version of PE were you using?

dont bother downloading PE from the Microsoft Windows SysInternals web site. They only offer the latest version and older versions of PE are scrapped.

What? Tell me it's not true. sad.gif
I haven't run into any issues, personally.

I have a USB stick that I use sometimes. :/

No need to. As I said, it works fine when I don't have the USB supplement installed. The version I have is 9.25.

It complains that it can't find the IsDebuggerPresent function in KERNEL32.DLL

Replace the DRWATSON.EXE file with the Win98 version. It's supposed to work under Win95. A Dr. Watson icon should appear in the system tray.

I know when I tested the Win98 Dr. Watson tool under a Win95 PC without usb supplement fix installed, it loaded and worked as expected. When I tested Win98 Dr. Watson on a Win95 machine with USB supplement installed, Win98 Dr. Watson no longer works.

It sucks that SysInternals & Winternals got purchased by Microsoft in July of 2006 (darn SysInternals gave in to the big M$)

WRONG!!!!! mad.gif

I just tested Process Exporer v9.25 on Win95 SR2.5 with USB Supplement (4.03.1214). I also get 100% idle cpu process just like you mentioned in your first post.
After I UN-INSTALLED USB Supplement and reverted back to Win95 4.00.1111 AND ran Process Explorer 9.25 it NO LONGER showed 100% Idle process. ALL processes NOW worked as expected displaying the correct CPU usage!!!

Looks like you now stand corrected. biggrin.gif

version 9.25 of Process Explorer found [here] - it was listed at the ProcessList.com site

Are you deliberately reading my posts upside down, or something? The whole point of this topic is that Process Explorer shows 100% idle on Win 95 OSR 2.5 WITH USB supplement!

When I said I didn't encounter any issues, I was talking about EVERYTHING ELSE.

DUH, and THE ONLY WAY TO FIX the 100% IDLE problem IS TO UNINSTALL ALL USB components to Win95 to MAKE PE WORK CORRECTLY.
CAN YOU UNDERSTAND THAT!!!! I'M NO LONGER INTERESTED IN "EVERYTHING ELSE" BUT TO RESOLVE THE 100% IDLE PROBLEM!

I EVEN TESTED versions 6.03 AND 5.25 of Process Explorer (which I also found on Google & Yahoo) and THEY ALSO DISPLAYED 100% IDLE resources with Win95 + USB Supplement. EVEN though I also didnt experience major problems with the KERNEL files from the USB supplement, they made Process Explorer behave so strangely. I have tested this many, MANY times this past weekend.

After I removed USB from Win95 SR2.5 on my old Win95C computer, Process Explorer (any version up to 9.25) no longer displays 100% idle resources and works as expected.

They are the exact same. They were simply put into differently named zips to monitor downloads.

That seems to be the only known fix, but what I was replying to was that you were accusing me of being wrong in thinking that there were no problems with the USB supplement, which I only said about everything else.

I mailed Nathan Lineback about this, and he thinks the tool is using some trick that doesn't work anymore for the USB kernel. He hasn't seen any other program that worked on OSR 2 not working anymore on OSR 2.1 USB. By the way, version 10.20 works fine on Win95 according to him if you use a hex editor to edit out the IsDebuggerPresent call, which isn't used by the program (it sounded like he had run across several programs before that did the same stupid thing).

never mind. I want to request the moderators of MSFN Forum to CLOSE this thread as the process explorer problem seems to occur only on Win95 OSR2.1/OSR2.5 systems and NOT under Win98 FE/SE/WinME. I have tested different versions of Process Explorer under ALL Win9xME systems and the 100% idle problem only happens under OSR2.1 & OSR2.5 editions of Win95 and they run properly under other editions of Win95.

so the problem is only Win95 SR2+USB related and does NOT occur on other Win9x systems.

Delete the Process Explorer program off your computer, BenoitRen, and use the WinTop kerneltoy which does work correctly under OSR2.1 & OSR2.5 w/ usb supplement installed.
BenoitRen
Win95 OSR 2.x is Win9x too, so why does this thread have to close?

This kerneltoy, can it be used stand-alone, or do I have to install other "toys" along with it?

To my knowledge, each "kernel toy" can be used by itself.

* Microsoft Kernel Toys 95 Set for Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2: MS-DOS Mode
Configuration Wizard Customization Tool (DOSWZCFG.EXE), Keyboard Remap
(KEYREMAP.DLL), Logo Key Control (DOSWINKY.VXD), Conventional Memory Tracker
(CONVMEM.VXD), Windows Process Watcher (WINTOP.EXE) + Time Zone Editor

Direct download [57 KB, free, unsupported]:

Some MS Kernel Toys work with Windows 98/ME.
Do NOT install MS Kernel Toys on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003!

P.S.:
Please PM me if you'd like this thread closed.
Thanks.
