Hi, I've been trying to slipstream the windows update agent on my 2003 SP1 server cd and I have not been successful. It looks like it is successful but when I go to window update I have to install the update for windows update first. I have included WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe in the HF directory as well as MUWEB_SITE.CAB in the HFCABS directory. Can someone please shed some light on as to what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks
Super-Magician
MUWEB_SITE.cab itself does not force Windows Update to recognize the presence of the MUWEB.DLL file. Instead, you must import another file, which I have attached here. Put this in HFSVCPACK.

If you are also slipstreaming/integrating/installing IE7, you may encounter additional problems with slipstreaming of the Microsoft Update Agent.
hansenjr
Thanks for you quick response, but I do not see the sfx file that I need to import. As far as IE7, I should be ok for now since I do not want to integrate it at this time.

Thanks again!
Super-Magician
Try that post again. The board upgrade (IPB 2.2.x) changed the way files are embedded in posts, so I had to edit it.
hansenjr
Got the file this time. Do I need to put WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe in the HF directory too or do I just need the MUWEB_SITE.CAB in the HFCABS?

Thanks
Super-Magician
Wow, many posts about WU and MU today! laugh.gif

WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe is for Windows Update. You need that for many things, but I'm not sure if Microsoft Update requires it or if the MUWEB_SITE.CAB file covers it all. It's best to include both in case you want to switch back (but it's not much faster either way). It's your decision.
hansenjr
Great. I will try this first thing tomorrow. After I re-run HFSLIP I should no longer be asked to update windows update correct?

Thanks again for all your help.
Super-Magician
As long as you include that DataStore.exe file in HFSVCPACK, you should be fine. Report back if you have any trouble. smile.gif

hi S-M! not much time to dig deeper about this ... i just 1 very quick Q though ... would this be applicable to XP as well or to 2K3 only? thanks!
glentium
@Kiki
pardon me for gatecrashing here, but if you have no problem with WU and HFSLIP, I suggest you just leave your current HFSLIP setup as is... i do have a W2K3SP1 HFSLIPed DVD and I have no problem with WU.. smile.gif

I have tried on XP system and is the same smile.gif
Good luck welcome.gif

Same problem. After installing 2003 server I click on windows update and it tells me that I need to install an active x control for windows update. I click on install and it just hangs. It never even gets to the express or custom page.

Read this post again and you found the workaround for making "microsoft update" to work
hansenjr
S3, I don't understand what you mean...
Super-Magician
@hansenjr, sorry, but I guess my workaround only works on XP. sad.gif I will try to find out how to make one for 2K3.

@Kiki, yes, it works on XP like I just said (I've been using it for many months).

@glentium, many people prefer using Microsoft Update rather than Windows Update. The person who started this topic was looking for a way to slipstream the MU DLL.

S-M, my friend, you might have mixed up this topic, which is entitled "Windows Update Agent not slipstreaming on 2003 server" with the one about "Microsoft Update" here: HFSLIP - Test releases smile.gif

btw, I can both go in without hassle to Windows Update and Microsoft Update in XP and 2003 by just putting in the necessary files listed in the dynamic lists by tomcat, which is why I said in my other post: 'don't fix something that is working'... smile.gif
Super-Magician
Actually, I guess hansenjr only wanted to slipstream the Windows Update Agent. Therefore, I'll issue this correction. tongue.gif

@hansenjr, if you just want to slipstream the Windows Update Agent, then simply include WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe in HF. You don't need MUWEB_SITE.CAB, and you can ignore anything I said above. The Microsoft Update Agent (MUWEB_SITE.CAB) is a separate issue.
hansenjr
It's still not working. After I install 2003 and run windows update it is still asking me to install an active x update. Now if I run WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe manually and reboot, I goes right into the express/custom page of windows update. I guess it really isn't slipsteaming.
Super-Magician
This is peculiar. Can I see your HFSLIP.LOG file?

Just for kicks... What if you first try to get rid of this? smile.gif
hansenjr
I tried that already and no go.
hansenjr
Any other ideas?
Tomcat76
It could be that an unsupported hotfix is causing the slipstreaming of Windows Update Agent to break but I can't see that because you stripped your log.

When you open WindowsUpdate.log (located in the Windows folder), which files need to be updated according to it?
tommyp
To help track your previously patched source... Is there a source\i386\svcpack folder? Is there a source\i386\NLITE.IN_ file? Is there a source\i386\hfsl***.inf file(s)?
hansenjr
Attached is the WindowsUpdate.log file. I am going to start over with a fresh souce. Once I have a clean souce I will reply with the rest of your answers.

Thanks
Tomcat76
OK. This shows that WUA isn't slipstreamed at all.

What's the size of WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe?
What's its timestamp? (right-click > Properties > Digital Signatures)
Can you post a copy of the PRODSPEC.INI file you have in SOURCE\I386?
hansenjr
The size of WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe is 4.28 MB (4,386 KB).
Timestamp = Sunday, October 29, 2006 11:14:57 PM
Tomcat76
Your PRODSPEC.INI is fine, but the WUA20 executable is newer. I just downloaded it and there's indeed a newer version. Lemme check if something was changed....
Tomcat76
The files are newer and some MUI DLLs were added, but nothing has changed place. I just tested it on 2K3 SVR and it's working fine. Try downloading the file again. Also, check that files such as wuapi.dl_ in your original source aren't newer than October 29, 2006.
hansenjr
Ok, I will try it again, but I've tried it about 10 times already and have the same results each time. The date of my WUAPI.DL_ file is 3/24/05. Did your source cd already include SP1? Also, when you tried it and ran windows update, did it go right to the express/custom screen?

Thanks for all your help with this!
Tomcat76
Yes, the source was already patched to SP1.
I didn't install 2K3 with the new version of WUA20, but I checked the WUA20 files in SOURCESS\I386 and they were all updated (I unpacked them and checked the version numbers).
Super-Magician
OK, so there is a newer version! That's what glentium told me in the other thread. OK, I will update that list soon.
hansenjr
Where did you download the updated version from?

Thanks
