There is a driver for Win2K on the Asus site, you could try to manually install it and see what happens.

Although AD1986A is AC97 2.3 and HDA compatible, there is no Win9x/me driver for AD1986A.

You can try the driver for AD1986 or AD1985, but you may have to edit the *.inf

AFAIK the are no general SoundMax drivers, all of them are for specific brand only. So there are AD1886A drivers for Asus, AD1886A drivers for IBM, AD1886A drivers for Intel etc.
