What's this about?

Nero Lite is an custom created installer for the main Nero Burning Rom applications.
It also comes with unattended switches to make it install silently

Why don't you use Nero 7/8?

Nero 7/8 has become bloatware and it's difficult to make the setup program install silently. Also by default Nero installs a lot of DirectShow filters which may interfere with my video recording software.

Why not use another burning program?

When it comes to burning Nero does have an intuitive user interface, has proven stability and compatibility with most burners. It may even supports burning HD-DVD and BlueRay, and it can print Labelflash cd's.
But face it, there are other free cd burning applications in development which are making progress.
If you want a free burning program I can recommend ImgBurn. Its user interface is not exactly like Nero, but it will do all burning tasks just fine.
Recently a new project got my attention: InfraRecorder. InfraRecorder is open source, lightweight and the interface works just like Nero. Although it looks nice, it is not very stable yet.

Do I loose functionality when switching to Nero Lite?

I try to keep Nero Lite functionality as complete as possible, so definitely usability over space. Of course I do remove a lot of stuff, but none of these is essential for burning plain cd's. If you ran into a problem, don't be shy to post.
Micro version is for people who only want a full functional Nero Burning ROM version, but without any extra software like CoverDesigner and WaveEditor.

Generally, look up Inno Setup documentation to read about commandline switches. The following list contains switches most used in unattended setup scripts

/SILENT
If a reboot is needed Setup will ask you.

/VERYSILENT
Automatic reboot without asking.

/NORESTART
No reboot, even if necessary.

/USER="UserName"
Specifies User Name

/COMPANY="MyCompany"
Specifies Company Name

Please, does anybody have some demo serial, I just installed nero lite here, with 'Demo' as serial, but when nero starts it's asking for serial, I don't have any serial, I just wanna use it as Demo.

As "Demo" is standard entry for demo/trial version (on german XP), I don't know of any other possible. And I believe there is no real demo/trial-serial, just the word. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm glad Nero released another update. Lets see if I can fix some issues by performing a fresh analysis on this setup

MY future plans for Nero is to develop a new tool to let people automaticly create a Nero Lite or Micro installer from an existing Nero setup file, so that I no longer have to distribute Nero binary files. Most probably this tool will be written in C#.

I read somewhere else that the serial issue is due to some file named "NeroPatentActivation". Not sure what it's all about though

You should try ftp://ftp6.nero.com/tools/General-CleanTool.zip first.
Uninstall Nero8 Run this tool, reboot you're system and install nero 8 lite.
It worked fine for me. The activation Issues are also gone. so just try it out.

The latest version of Lite got rid of the illegal serial screen for me. No more false deactivations! Whoo!

FYI everyone! Warning! This tool partially hosed my Vista installation. I never received the activation issue until recently. I uninstalled Nero 8 Lite, ran this tool, rebooted and for all intents and purposes, my Desktop was bare. Initially my sidebar popped up with it's gadgets but no icons on the desktop. Then the sidebar disappeared. Further tests indicate that the icons are probably still somewhere, but the desktop is turned "off" somehow. Right-clicking on the desktop does nothing, brings up no menu.

I can open My Computer (Windows Explorer) from the Start Menu, but if I right-click My Computer and choose Properties, then the screen flashes quickly as if it opened but it's not actually visible. Haven't tested other programs.

Also, all Windows-supplied notification icons are not present. All third-party program notification icons are.

Last but not least, I have Acronis True Image do regular scheduled backups every day, plus I do manual backups before I install or uninstall anything. After this hosing, I restored the backup from before I uninstalled Nero 8 Lite, and nothing changed, the desktop was still hosed. I don't know why. The closest I can come to an explanation is that in my Vista installations (just as with XP), I move most folders inside the user account folder (in this case, Administrator) to folders on a different partition, and maybe the General-CleanTool deleted something there? But I don't know why that would affect the desktop because that's one of the few things I don't move.

Argh.

I just wanted to let everyone know to be careful with General-CleanTool under Vista especially.

Edit (Update): I believe I did find the culprit. What happened is that almost all my drive letters changed. I should be able to restore the correct drive letters outside of Windows (BartPE), then restore the Vista backup once more and hopefully I'm set. Will update when I test.

Update 2: No luck at all getting Vista's desktop to work again. It appears that Vista should still work as normal other than the sidebar and desktop, so I'll just re-re-re-install yet another Vista installation on another (already existing for the purpose) partition and switch back and forth until my new one is satisfactorily set up.

Anyone knows if .NET 2.0 SP1 installs the VC++ 2005 Redistributable files? If so then I will remove these files from next Nero build. I didn't find any information about this myself.
Does anyone have more info about NeroPatentActivation.exe and what it does? It seems a lot of people have trouble with latest version and maybe it's because of this file missing.

Some googling found some info on rlslog but it was for **** version
