  1. Thank you all for your kind words. My site is down, and will remain down. It was never really "my" site, it belonged to Sadie, a lady who lives in England. She gave it to me to support my work on Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide. You can read more about it here... http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showtopic=9354 Jan has hosted the guide for you in the event of something like this happening. Jan's copy of my guide is the only copy that I have granted permission to host, and it is the only copy posted on the Internet that I keep updated. It's there for you when you need it. The guide was always for you. That's why I created it. It is my gift to those who always wanted to know which files they can delete from Windows XP but couldn't find the answer...my site was only an after thought. The guide is here for you when you need it... http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showforum=68 Sincerely, Bold_Fortune
  2. Well, you asked for it. This took me forever to figure out. Enjoy. Removing the subfolders in Documents (or Shared Documents) Permanently... (When you delete the desktop.ini file from Shared Documents, the folder is renamed to simply Documents.) In order to permanently delete the My eBooks, My Music, My Pictures, My Videos subfolders from appearing in the Documents (or Shared Documents) folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents (or Shared Documents) and in My Documents in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents, you first have to unregister the mydocs.dll, and then delete the folders. However, it is very difficult to stop the Shared Music folder from returning in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents (or Shared Documents). But we'll give it a good try in just a second. To unregister: Start > Run > type in - "regsvr32 /u mydocs.dll" (without the quotes) and click OK. Then go here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents (or Shared Documents) And here: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents and delete their subfolders folders. Now, about the "Shared Music" folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents (or Shared Documents).... Go to Windows Media Player Tools > Options > Library tab > Click on Monitor Folders > Highlight C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music > then click Remove. You can even remove any other paths to folders you may see in there. Now... Again in WMP go to Tools > Options > Rip Music tab. Under "Rip music to this location" click the Change button. Then create your own special folder in a location of your choice. I made a folder called Temporary Downloads on my D Drive. (Keep this in mind, if at some point you clear the MUI cache for ripping and burning Cd's, the new designated folder path you created in WMP could very well disappear, and WMP will default to the path C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music.) While you're in WMP, go to Tools > Options > Privacy and take the tick out of "Update music files by retrieving media info from the Internet." I do this mostly to stop album cover art from cropping up on my computer. You may like the album art. The "Shared Music" folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents (or Shared Documents), is the most difficult folder to keep from returning. However, you can delete the Value data of a certain registry string. (Let me say here, this is to be done in addition to what I have outlined above.) Navigate in the Registry Editor to... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders. In the right panel look for this entry... My Music REG_SZ C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\My Music You will notice that since you unregistered the mydocs.dll as I outlined above, that the Value data for "My Pictures" and "My Video" have already been removed. Double click on My Music, and delete the Value data. Don't delete the entire String, just the value data. Now navigate also to here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders In the right panel look for this entry... CommonMusic REG_SZ C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\My Documents\My Music Just as you did above, Double click on CommonMusic, and delete the Value data. Don't delete the entire String, just the value data. NOTE: If you use MRU Blaster, the Value Data you just removed will return here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders. ...and also, the My Music folder in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents will return. ...and, the "Rip music to this location" you chose in Windows Media Player will revert back to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\My Music. NOTE: Using Ad-aware to remove the MRU (Most Recently Used), the Value Data you just removed will return Here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders ...and, the Shared Music folder back to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents will return. There is one another part of this tweak that needs some work. I don't have it figured out yet, so if you have any ideas, let me know... When you rip a music CD, the "Shared Music" folder will return to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents (or Shared Documents) ...no matter what. But this is the only time, as far as I can see.

Courtesy of Terry (tblount2@flash.net), Crack Talk Newsletter editor: "MS Internet Explorer 5.5 Advanced Security Privacy Beta manages cookies and maintains a higher degree of security and privacy never attained before. Now you can configure your browser settings to differentiate between cookies that originate from a web server you're intentionally visiting, and cookies that originate from other web sites which provide advertising or services. A new Help menu item provides an overview section and important links to information about Internet Explorer's security and privacy features. It is gracious of Microsoft to improve cookie control, but another process (used in the past on Microsoft's own Web sites) can track visitors even better than cookies. The feature called "User Data Persistence" (UDP) appeared in MS IE 5.0 and is not as well known or as easily managed as cookies, but unfortunately can accomplish the same thing. There is no warning flag that can be toggled to tell you when Data Persistence is being used on a web site to store information from your system, but it can be turned off: open IE -> from the File menu click Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom Level -> Miscellaneous -> disable "User Data persistence". The purpose Data Persistence was developed for was to offer the ability to "persist" information, which also lets you retain style and state beyond a single web page. Preserving style and state helps make it easy to produce web applications that use DHTML, such as an expensive report that automatically configures itself based on a user's personalized settings. A few lines of client-side script can accomplish what once required server-side programming and complicated scripts. The user data persistence behavior makes it easy to save information entered into a text field. Rather than query a server-side CGI script, the persisted information is saved to the CLIENT using two JScript-based functions and the persistent object, the data need never go to the server. This is an excellent example of how UDP was originally designed to be used. More info: IE 5.0: User Data Persistence. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0: The Inside Story. MSN Cookie & GUID tracking techniques. [This link courtesy of Ojatex@aol.com!]" Hidden Yahoo Option: Per Presto: As you all know, Yahoo! upgraded its features and the capacities of the mail accounts have grown to 250 MB. That's good for sure, but the "monitoring" methods that we all have been far too familiar with in the last couple of years have been renewed with this move also. Yahoo! is now keeping track of which sites its members that are getting into groups or using Yahoo! services are visiting and storing this data with a method called "Web Beacons". The aim is to give these statistics to the partner companies arranged by agreement and to improve the "advertisement guiding" function. However, those who are bothered by this and do not want to be kept track of have still a choice. Yahoo! has hidden this option way deep inside somewhere but I'm declaring it here in case there are people who want it anyway: 1. Go to the address http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy and click the "Cookies" link under the "Special Topics" column. 2. Click the "Web Beacons" link under the "Reference Links" Column. 3. On this page, click the "click here to opt out" link toward the end of the third paragraph under the "Outside the Yahoo! Network" title. 4. After a while, a page that says you have been out of the monitoring program will load. Without doing anything, close that page or continue your usual surfing by typing another address in the address bar. (Do NOT click the "Cancel Opt-out" button, your action will be cancelled!) 5. You're done! Now Yahoo! will not record what you're doing during surfing. You can let your friends that might be interested know about this; since no matter how "innocent" it may seem, it's still a violation of privacy. 4. That's pretty neat, prathapml. I don't know how you guys figure this kind of stuff out sometimes. Good job. I've been using PrintFolder 1.2 http://no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/ With it I can right-click on a folder and save it to a text file.
  5. I thought this was interesting. I notice you have "csrss.exe" showing as running in your Task manager. Ctfmon.exe is the file that is responsible for controlling the Alternative User Input technologies. It starts the Language Bar component (in the Systray) and remains running in the background even after you quit an Office XP program. It also starts each time Windows is started and remains in the background, regardless of whether an Office XP program is started. Instead of following all the advice "To prevent Ctfmon.exe from running," I just took these steps, and "csrss.exe" was gone. Run Regsvr32 /U on the Msimtf.dll and Msctf.dll Files 1. Click Start and then click Run. 2. In the Run dialog box, type the following command: Regsvr32.exe /u msimtf.dll 3. Click OK. I guess, too, with that way, if a person wanted to use the Language Bar again, he or she would just have to re-register the files. Just seemed kind of interesting. I don't know much about it. I just know "csrss.exe" seems to always run with or without Office. And since I don't have Office, I thought I'd try it out. From Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=282599 EDIT: I'm sorry. My brain misfired. I was thinking "ctfmon.exe" and looking at "csrss.exe". Whatta dope.
  6. You're very welcome, Zxian. Matter-of-fact, I'm really glad about all this tit-for-tat that's been going on, because I'm so happy with my results, I've included my findings in PART 5 of my guide...and I am no longer using Prefetch. Learning is what it's all about. Shoving it down the throats of others really isn't a very good way to go about things...at least in my opinion. All you can really say is, "This is what works for me. These are the tests I've performed. ...But you do what you think is best for you." ...And that's just one man's opinion.
  7. Ibis, this is partly for you, partly out of my own curiosity. I do not use nLite, as may know. I do however delete many files from my XP installation. My Window directory is 185MB. I also keep a full, XP installation image stored on another partition for testing purposes and comparisons. And I keep this image up-to-date same as I do the other. Each installation is identical to the other. Each has the same programs installed. Each has the same settings and tweaks applied. Each is kept up with the latest drivers and Windows Critical Updates. Everything installed is exactly the same as the other. Every change made is exactly the same as the other. There are only two exceptions to this: 1) Services settings 2) Files removed I cannot run bootvis on my 185MB image. I have COM+ disabled and all it's associated files deleted. I can run bootvis on my full installation, as COM+ is enabled and none of its files have been deleted. (Also, if it matters, Windows Defragmenter is enabled on this installation; where it is removed on the other.) Here are the Services settings I have on the full-installation image: http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.p...&st=0#entry1912 And these are the only files I removed from the full-installation image: http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=387 To figure out everything I have deleted on the 185MB installation...well, you'd kind of have to read my entire guide. However, I can show you which Services I have enabled, disabled, and deleted, here: http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=241 On each installation, my reboot time is a consistent 31 seconds (given an oddball, occasional 32 second reboot on each). I have always kept a curious check on this. (I was excited recently to discover that if I set Acronis Scheduler2 Service to manual, and not allow Acronis True Image Monitor to startup with my system, that it shaved 2 seconds off my reboot time.) One more thing, I use PerfectDisk Defragmenter on both installations to manage my boot files, and I have always had Prefetch enabled (set to "3" in the registry) on both installations. Now that we have those reference points established, let me show you my results. With my full installation (reboot time being a consistent 31 seconds) when I run bootvis, my consistent reboot time remains at 31 seconds. If I then, set my Prefetch to "0" in the registry (disabled), my reboot time gains 2 seconds, making it now 33 seconds. Now, if I then keep that "0" setting, and purge the Prefetch folder of all it's files, and defragment using PerfectDisk, my reboot time goes down a second, to 32 seconds. So I gained 1 second on my reboot time on my full installation. As I said, I cannot run bootvis on my 185MB installation. However, when I disable the Prefetch in the 185MB installation, my 31 second reboot time gains 1 second, making it 32 seconds. Then, leaving Prefetch disabled, and now purging the Prefetch folder of all its files, defragmenting using PerfectDisk, my reboot time reverts once again to its 31 seconds. You know something? I really learned something with all this. By having the Prefetch disabled, and the Prefetch folder purged of all its files, on my 185MB installation, there is absolutely no difference in my reboot times. On the other hand, should I do the same for my full installation image, it adds 1 second to my reboot time.
  8. I posted this for dirtwarrior's benefit. Maybe others can find it useful. http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=663
  9. Man, this stuff is great. I'm saving all these posts. I'm really into cleaning up my context menus, and this is a plus. Thanks everyone!
  10. Branstrom, I offered as much help as I can on this on your thread here... http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=629
  11. Well, I doubt it would be from anything in the guide. The guide is about what I remove from XP, and I've never encounter this particular problem.
  12. That guide of mine you're looking at on Neowin, Branstrom, has had numerous revisions made to it. I doubt if anyone's computer would work after using that one. LOL. (Just kidding.) Better try this one... http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=229
  13. Let me explain first that I delete quite a few files from my XP installation, which should explain the large amount of invalid entries I receive when running any registry cleaner. After reading through this thread, I put a couple of registry cleaners here mentioned to the test. I have been using CCleaner for some time now, and find it a wonderful little program. And thanks to the maker for letting us have it for free. 1). CCleaner has been clearing out invalid registry entries right along for me, so I couldn't tell you just how many thousands of invalid registry entries it has found for me before making this comparison. 2). I ran Registry Mechanic, and it found an additional 834 invalid entries on top of what CCLeaner has found over a great period of time. 3). Then I ran RegSupreme, and it found an additional 992 invalid entries on top of those Registry Mechanic found. 4). Then I called out The Big Gun, Ontrack's Registry Fixer. Registry Fixer uncovered an additional 2,959 invalid registry entries on top of all of them. I have to cast my vote for Ontrack's Registry Fixer.
  14. System Information needs the index.dat file located in this folder: C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\OfflineCache to function properly. If the index.dat file isn't there, make another copy and paste it there and then System Information should function again. Just create a new, blank, txt file and rename it index.dat You can also do this with or without that particular index.dat file in place. Make a new text document and change the extension to .nfo and then double click on it. (It may take a moment to open the first time.) You might see a System Information Popup saying "System Information cannot open this NFO file. It might be corrupted or an unrecognized version." Just click OK and your System Information will appear inside Help and Support Center.
  15. I got this from someone a long time ago. Hope it helps you. Make a copy of browselc.dll located in Windows\system32 and open it in ResHack. Expand the String Table folder, then subfolder 807, click on 1033 (when you are using ResourceHacker you will see what I'm talking about) In the right window now delete the word A&ddress, leave the "". Hit 'Compile Script' Click File > Save Next step is to replace the original file with your modified one. Find browselc.dll in either C:\Windows\system32\dllcache or C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386, rename it to browselc.bak and copy your hacked file in there instead. Now boot into safe mode and do exactly the same with the browselc.dll in C:\Windows\system32. Windows System File Protection will pop up two windows, answer them with cancel and OK. Reboot.

  18. And here I was thinking my work was unappreciated at MSFN. Thanks, Clint. I enjoy following along on the threads here. You guys are doing a great job. Keep it up. Because I'm sure lots of people are getting a lot from what you all are doing.
  19. Just wanted to thank you guys for all this. Especially spiritpyre...who is fast becoming "The Man of the Hour" on the "Favorite Tweaks" thread I recently put up on my modest site. (A really nice lady from England gave me the site...paid for everything for me. She's great.) Anyway, maybe when you find time you can post a couple of your jewels there, too. http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.p...&st=0#entry1900

  21. Hi, war59312. I mean, right-click right here on the X --> X
  22. How about removing some of the right-click context menus that show up when you right-click directly on an opened web page? That menu really looks a mess, doesn't it? If anyone can do it, I'll bet you can.
  23. Well, duh. I had already removed it with this... Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;Remove Print From Internet Shortcut [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\InternetShortcut\shell\print] The "Remove Make Available Offline From Internet Shortcuts" worked like a charm. You're really great at uncovering these, spiritpyre. Thanks so much for time you invest in it.
  24. Hmm. I don't have these entries in my registry... ;To Remove Print From Internet Shortcut [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\InternetShortcut\shell\print] ;To Remove Print From Internet Shortcut 2 [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\print] I have "printto" though. Is that it?
