  1. Install of Vista from Folder on NTFS USB-stick was realised as described here http://www.msfn.org/board/vista-t114092.html&st=6 It will be possible to combine XP , Vista x86 and Vista x64 for Install from USB. Different versions of XP cannot be combined on one stick, but it is very convenient to use different sticks for this purpose. Unless the stick is multipartitioned then different versions can be combined but of course this is only theoretical. Automating the process is kinda of non-trivial, we need a utility something like vlite/nlite for multi-install so the images can be created and copied over to a stick. The requirement would go something like this: 1) Select the Destination type (usb-hd/usb-stick) 2) Select the source OS (multi-checkboxes) 3) Determine if Destination space is sufficent 4) Partition the Drive 5) Copy over the Source Files 6) Setup the boot menu and bcd store 7) Give final directions on reboot
  2. Greate information Wimb. It might just be easier to just to create multiple partitions lol. On that note, EasyBCD can also be used to edit the BCD store using a friendly GUI of course it doesn't help in automating a process to create a useable USB stick. I'll try to use the folder method of installing x64 Vista and will give you guys feedback. EDIT: by jaclaz: Please refrain from quoting entire longish posts, they only make the thread less readable.
  3. Thanks for your feedback.I was not aware of it, but options B and W also do NOT work in Vista x86. The problem is that the Visual Basic Script routine FileSel_ini.vbs gives an unexpected ActiveX runtime Error. I will try to find a workaround for this problem. Of course you may not want to bother anyways because Vista has serious problems with USB file transfers. It took more than an hour to copy the XPSOURCE to my USB stick which is a Corsair Flash Voyager 8GB drive. The same copy on XP took less than 8 Mins and the source image is < 650 MB. The Corsair is one of the fastest sticks around. Install of XP took less than 15 mins but the boot menu was not setup correctly so had to do a manual boot from the stick. Vista OS is indeed very slow in File Transfer to USB.Install of Vista was realised by Booting from USB Harddisk, which was previously prepared in an XP OS Environment. Have you or anyone an idea to overcome the ActiveX problem with the VBS Script ? Is it may be a simple setting or is it more complicated. In fact it is rather strange that the FileSelector cannot be used in VISTA with this VBS script. I'm wondering if it is UAC that is preventing the call from being enabled. I'll need to check the VBS docs on MSDN.
  4. I've used the modified version of the program to automate a nlited version of x64 and works great. Does anyone know why the files are deleted during txtmode install. Is this true even if you make the files read-only or better yet write protect the entire stick?
  5. I guess I wasn't clear on the intent. The purpose was to have multiple installs on a single USB stick. Although my understanding is that it is very difficult to partition a USB stick unless it is bit set to be a fixed drive which I believe the Corsair Flash Voyager series can become. Under the above assumption I would need a Vista bootsector and XP bootsector written to the USB stick and have GRUB boot off the partition depending on the choice of install.
  6. Yes See http://www.msfn.org/board/Install-Vista-USB-t111506.html After booting with boot.ini menu, one can select GRUB4DOS Menu with the option to launch VISTA Setup by chainload of bootmgr. It also possible to boot first with Windows PE 2.0 and then run VISTA Setup from a different partition. So conceivably I can partition a 8GB or 16GB stick to contain XP, Vista, Vista x64, is that true? Does that mean a BCD needs to be created on the primary partition of the stick assuming its formatted with NTFS?

  8. The script has problems running in Vista x64. Options B and W do not work in Vista x64. Haven't tried running in Vista x86 yet.
  9. I tried x64 but usb usb_multiboot5.cmd would not take the Source directory of my install source. Any ideas?
  10. Can this method/tool also be used to install Win XP x64? If not, is there a way to modify to make it work? Has anyone been able to install x64 with a USB?
